MILL DISTRICT RENOVATION Barnes & Noble Bookstore

Media: AutoCAD, Revit, Enscape, Photoshop, InDesign Key Words: Vitality, Renovation, Community, Immersive The Urban Revitalization is the process from old to new. Adding the energy, the new face to the old, which refreshes the life of the area and its neighborhood. For this project, The goal is to revitalize the Mill District which is located in Downtown Kent, Ohio. It is named after the Williams Brothers established the iconic Mill on North Water Street in 1879. The mill district leaves its white grain elevator as the skyline of Kent., 140 Years ago, the mill produced flour, today it represents a symbol of progress that is ready for the next era. The district in Kent also known for its tight-knit arts culture, but it is also the home for many businesses, cafe, coffee shops, etc, these services built the based for the diverse growth in business and arts culture. The project will focus on research, design for the reuse of the existing building or structure located in the Mill District of Kent, Ohio. This project also leads the study of Urban Planning in local scale. Including the vegetation planning, sidewalk and pavement planning, community engagement and occupation of the public spaces, etc.

DESIGN CONCEPT VITALITY The concept word "vitality" means the capacity to live, grow, or develop, just like all living things have their own well-functioning system to produce energy for living. All living things emit their vitality and energy, also bring to earth a more colorful environment. The new design of the bookstore is in need of this kind of vigor environment. Vitaily is a expression of energy, a power that giving continuance of life. By creating the sense of vitality in the bookstore to enchance the experience of vitality while encourage more socializing in the space.

This design will bring a new model of the bookstore, it is not just an ordinary bookshopping store, it can make people stay here and enjoy leisure time. In addition to finding the books they want, visitors are more willing to read quietly here. This venue will provide communication between people and the interaction between people and books. This design also will be a symbol of the revitalization of the Mill District. While engaging the socialization among people, but also have the accessibility to nature, and promote its sustainability.

The custom green panel function as a space sperate as well as the green space participator. The tree-like structure in the center of the space function as the core of the building. With the soft warm light on the structure, it reflect the sense of vitality and added a welcome feeling.

In order to provide customers with an immersive reading experience, the entire public reading area is surrounded by a special custom bookcase, which surrounds the entire public reading area. While ensuring that customers can achieve a satisfactory reading experience, the ceiling in the central area and the surrounding walls have corresponding skylights and windows to introduce natural light into the indoor space, which solves the problem of dim light.

STAIR SEATING AREA 1 The public reading area on the first and second floors connected by a large staircase. This staircase not only has a stair seating area, but also a small reading area in the middle landing area, which not only broadens the openness of the entire space but also enriches the sense of hierarchy. The stair seating area uses different color cushions to increase the sense of activity throughout the space. STAIR SEATING AREA 2

KIDS BOOK AREA The combination of multiple colors and the use of green panels bring more activity and joy to the children's reading area. Special customized bookshelves have different sizes of compartments, which not only reduces the monotony of the space, but also increases the openness of the whole children's reading space. The correspondence between carpet and ceiling provides customers with orientation in this area.

POP - UP DESIGN BARNES & NOBLE POP- UP BOOKSTORE

The Pop-up structure is located directly in front of Barnes & Noble’s store. It made from a shipping container. As an experience version of the main store, customers can experience it in the Pop-up structure before entering the main store. On the day of the Pop-up Festival, stores on North Water Street will launch their corresponding Pop-up buildings.

DESIGN CONCEPT Energetic The redesign of the headquarters of the OFS company will bring in a refreshing, working office, rather than a traditional office, to achieve the goal of improving employees and visitor's experience, infusing an energetic, passionate and dynamic working environment. The concept word "Energetic" means possessing or exhibiting energy; powerful in action or effect. When one entering a space, he or she will feel energetic. The new design of the OFS headquarters needs this kind of vigor environment.

As always, At OFS Brands, people have established a consensus that they have built for nearly a century of success and they will continue to be the foundation for their sustainable growth. Design Intent

The intent of this design is to enhance a better communication and functional space for the new office in the OFS headquarters. As employees and visitors walk out the elevator, they will experience a flow combining sunlight, artificial light, color, and design pattern which will make space feel more vital and energetic. Just like all living things have their own

well-functioning system to produce energy for living. A well functioning system will need the ability for communication and interaction. We bring in the strong connection between "We" Space and "Me" Space by combining different patterns and colors that are very important to encourage a vital environment for the new office.

DESIGN CONCEPT Transition The design of the Next Clinic will bring in a refreshing, modern and well-functional environment that is able to improve the communication between employees and patients. Rather than the traditional clinic, the Next Clinic will provide large open space as well as enough private space to achieve the goal of enhancing employees and patients experience. The word “transition� means the movement, passage, or change from one position, state, stage to another, just like the process of an object from solid to liquid, or the change of size of an object. For the Next Clinic project, the design will bring in multiple visual effects to the interior in order to let users feel the transition from one area to another.


DESIGN INTENT Clinics have changed a great deal over the past few decades. They are no longer just a place to see a doctor and pick up medicine. They have slowly transformed into places where that only provide medical care and we pick up medicine, but also for knowledge popularization and the promotion of a healthy lifestyle for patients. Just like the different needs of the two patient groups, the design of the Next clinic is in need of this "transition". In this project, the NEXT Clinic focuses on two distinct patient groups, one is millennial and another is the baby boomer. For two different groups of patients to experience the environment and space that suits them, we need to create an environment that allows both groups a better experience. The intent of this design is to create a clinic which allows two different groups of patients and employees to experience a functional and commodious space as well as enhance the communication between patients and employees. When patients and employees walk into the clinic, they will feel the warmth with the different color patterns and sufficient natural light. As they "transition" deeper, they will have enough space for either private and public. They will feel the transition change when walking into an area from another but without an abrupt feeling. By using different workstations and benching, both employees and patients can choose their preferred way to work or relax.

Exterior Ramp to the Gift Shop Materials

History Iceland is a volcanically and geologically active country located in the North Atlantic. Iceland has several nicknames, such as Land of fire and ice, Snow land, The Thule. The main construction is remained the form of the turfing house until 19th century due to the lack of tree in the country. This project is to design a semi-trailer truck which based on Iceland culture. The semi-truck use as a mobile gift shop.

The recorded history of Iceland can be dated back to the settlement of Iceland which began in 874 AD by Viking explorers. The land was settled fast, mainly by Norwegians who may have been fleeing conflict or seeking new land. Later, the first form of governance was established in 930, called “The Althing”. It marked one of the world’s oldest parliaments. In the year of 1000, Iceland was Christianized through the influence of Norwegian King Olaf Tryggvason. The period known as the old commonwealth, the Saga was written as a tool for history recordation and folktale. Iceland remained independent until 1262 because of internal conflict during 1180-1264 which known as Sturlung era. Iceland remained, for a long time, one of the world’s last larger islands uninhabited by humans.

DESIGN CONCEPT A premonition of a river coursing through the earth floats in the back the mind like cold winter wind brushing across the skin. The swiftness of the waves is felt in your core like the beat of a drum in the distance. Approaching the river causes the vision to fade. A comforting warmth envelops the atmosphere. To know lucidity is to see distinctly and clearly. One can experience fluidity through smooth and eloquent movements. Embracing rawness is to feel organic and vulnerable within yourself. The totality of these experiences brought together create a peaceful and fresh environment.

Design Intent Creating “friction� spaces within the design will allow the concept to come through. There will be uncomfortable areas within most spaces. This design will showcase those areas and create a raw transition into the comforting and peaceful environments. Project Goal: For this project, the main goal was to design a universal space for all users. More often than not, users with invisible disabilites are forgotten when designing these universal spaces. Keeping this in mind, through further development of our concept, our group wanted to focus on highlighting difficulties that people who have disabilties go through on a daily basis, to users in the space without disabilites. This will be further explained in our concept overview and design intent.

The model in real life is about 5 feet in length and 5 feet in width. It contains four laser-cut panels which have Alphabet and Arabic number 1-10, The “P”, “L”, “A”, and “Y” are emphasized to form a colorful looking with the purpose for kids to learn while they are playing in the structure! The roof of the building is inclined at an angle so that the rainwater flows down. The physical model is about 7’ X 7’ and has the letter “P”, “L”, “A”, and “Y” laser cut panel for each side just like the way it designed to, each panel patterned with the entire alphabet and hand paint the word “PLAY”. It was a fun and challenge model making the experience because considered the physical model size, the cutting and gluing process need to be done precisely.

This glass canopy structure is for the proposal of the memorial of African American who were enslaved at the college of William and Mary. When sunlight shines through the panels, the slave names will be projected either onto the ground or onto the bodies of passers-by. The model contains a total of six overlapping square panel frames supported by a square column grid. The grid can be extended and new panel frames can be formed as additional slave names are learned. The wheeled benches on tracks allow visitors to experience the panel effect from different locations as the sun moves through the sky. This model was a product of teamwork. It built by me and Anne Chien. We thoughtfully decide to keep the newspaper paper mache looking to call out the meaning of memory.

This cube design build project focuses on the light study of the interior spaces with different forms and materials in different environments. The objective is to team up with the total of 3 team members who have different E-Color quiz results and conduct a light study of 3”x3”x3” prototypes together then combine different designs together into the 18”x18”x18” final cube.
