The offseason is in full swing, so it’s time for everyone to turn to the future. For some teams, this means the next couple of months; for others, a longer timeline is necessary. The goal for these clubs is to improve over the next few years. This article will talk about the best prospects to look out for in the 2023 baseball season.

Gunnar Henderson, 3B, Orioles The 42nd overall pick in the 2019 draft, Henderson started last season in Double-A before making his way to the majors. In 34 games, he batted .259/.348/.440 (123 OPS+) with four home runs and a stolen base. He mainly played third base, though he had some action at second and short. Henderson’s above-average footwork and agility make him an ideal candidate to play multiple positions in the future.

His offensive skills are built on solid raw power and discipline, and he should be able to develop into a solid offensive player in the future. However, he has a problem with lefthanded pitchers, which he can hopefully address with time. At this point, it’s not surprising that most of his damage will come from platoon situations.

Corbin Carroll, OF, Diamondbacks Due to various injuries and the COVID-19 pandemic, Carroll only played in 142 minorleague games before his debut in the majors last August. Despite the lack of playing time, he still hit .260/.330/.500 (133 OPS+) with four home runs and two stolen bases in 32 games. His swing-and-miss tendencies continued to be a concern. Despite his minor flaw, Carroll is still a well-rounded center fielder who can provide valuable secondary value.

Francisco Álvarez, C, Mets When the Mets needed a right-handed bat to help them in the playoffs, Alvarez was called up late last season. Although he struggled in the regular season, he’s a capable defensive player with raw power who has improved enough to stick at catcher. Strikeouts are always going to be a staple of his game. His pull-heavy approach in the minors could limit his batting average upside, but he has the potential to become an offensive force if he can develop his pop.

Jackson Chourio, OF, Brewers In 2022, Chourio became the minor-league season’s most outstanding player. Even though he was only 18 years old at the time, he hit .288/.342/.538 with 20 home runs and 16 steals across three levels. He’s a talented athlete with a well-above-average power-speed combination and should be able to add muscle to his frame in the future. Despite striking out in over 26 percent of his plate appearances last season, it’s easy to forgive Chourio for his actions based on his youth. He was four years younger than the average minor-leaguer he faced and six years younger than the average Double-A player. With the help of the minor-league system and the Brewers’ patience, he should be able to end the year as the best prospect in the league.
