Speciality Cardiac Hospital Boston, MA
The proposal, a specialty cardiac hospital, is situated along the now expansive Rose Kennedy Greenway in Boston’s North End. Building from the sense of civic activity generated by the Greenway, the proposal separates and showcases the public components of the seemingly private hospital program. On the exterior, the structure that houses the public programs becomes activated at the street level by moments of transparency, scale, and emphasis on the Southeast corner. The treatment of its façade intentionally contrasts the pattern of the terra-cotta panels that clad the patient care tower, visually presenting two distinct programs. Based on Boston’s traditions of civic space, the raised terrace gardens and grand stair extend the public spaces into the hub of the building. These public spaces, primarily intended for the hospital community, are opened to the city as well. Natural light, views, gathering spaces, and fresh air are prioritized to enhance the curative process for patients of the Boston Cardiac Hospital.

E. L. Lowder Branch Library Installation Montgomery, AL
The proposal for a renovation and installation of the E. L. Lowder Public Library in Montgomery, AL creates a more civic gathering space that fosters community, interaction, and discovery. While maintaining the large open room and increasing visibility for staff, the layout and design of furniture creates individualized groupings of half-stacks, task tables, media tables, and lounge furniture. While moving through the library, in fact, one becomes aware of two textural landscapes which both ground and differentiate spaces: a consistently low landscape of furniture, and, above, a gently undulating ceiling. The proposed ceiling of concentric wood louvers is suspended from the existing structure and ascends and descends to frame groups of furniture. The ceiling is also effective in scattering natural light from the ribbon windows and newly proposed skylight that surrounds the centrally relocated staff space. An addition has been proposed to the northeast to provide space for a quiet and amply lit reading area. The warmth and tactile qualities of the wood and increased natural light provide an environment that is stable, pleasant, and encouraging to interaction and intellectual discovery.

Alabama Impact Crater + Science Center Wetumpka, AL
The proposal is situated between two high points of the site, emphasizing a notion of enclosure within the disturbed terrain caused by the impact crater. Nestled within this basin a tall, vertical, light well rises above the treetops and is viewed from distinct vantage points travelling into and out of Wetumpka. The sculptural light well, clad in translucent mica panels, acts as a beacon for the interpretative center as well as an anchor of spaces around the site. Its irregularly triangulated, steel, structure contrasts the linear, three-axis plan. The light well hovers over the primary exhibit space, pointing towards the crater, as its grounding structural members puncture and define the interior space. Representative of impact and collision, the influence of the irregularly triangulated structure through the roof planes and back into the ground is evident through triangulated planes of glazing and cladding that act as partitions and coverage.

Furniture Woodworking Newbern, AL
This exploration of Gerrit Thomas Rietveld’s Zig Zag Chair featured three main parts: research, analysis, and construction. The research portion revealed the history of the chair and its design intent. Analysis, through a series of dimensioned drawings composed at 1:1 provided insight into the scale of the components and connection details. Finally, the chair was constructed, at full scale, using high quality black walnut wood.
