Year/3 final year project
Freedom in Movement
Site: Edinburgh Union Canal
Client: City Council
Type: Recreational
Project Brief:
The design brief is about building a space for people to perform a ritual. After researching this topic I have come up with my interpretation of it, ritual is a repetitional practice that aims to express a common belief that’s shared among a collective of people. I chose the expression of freedom in the form of body movement. To be precise, I wanted to build a space to celebrate and perform parkour.
Parkour was invented by a French stuntman / film director, David Belle, and is initially called l’art du déplacement (art of displacement in English). It is a movement to reject the boundaries created by physical structures and also to refuse socially accept behaviours.
Form development:
I made a concept model to investigate the relatioship between restriction and freedom. Aim to create the mindset of parkour in a physical form.
In the actual building, I decided to use a deconstructed language instead of the organic form to express freedom, as is more practical and close to a place which attracts parkour behaviour.
Hand Made Model / PhotoshopForm:
The main building has a relatively box-like form, contrasting with the scaffolding and ‘Greeble’ parkour structure seemingly bursting out of the box.
Key ideas:
- Arrange stucture to alter the walkway to make it interesting
- Design a landscape to transition the levels
- Use levels and parkour blocks to build a sense of boundary
- Introduce parkour activity and bring street art into the area
- Design a bridge system which connect every building and also both sides of the canal

View of the outdoor landscape during summertimes.
It mainly consisting of different parkour elements and occasionally hosting art exhibitions.
Graffiti is a debatable / rebellious art form, in my opinion, it is the most grounded form of art. It can be performed by anyone with a can of spray paint and a message.
Graffiti Art and Parkour side by side can complement each other aesthetically and evoke creativity.
Collage of fictional beings created by different artists crashing together vibrantly and colourfully.
Sketchup / Enscape / PhotoshopThe Pier:
A view of the bar and pier from the art studio (on the other side of the canal) in the early winter morning.
Edinburgh Canal used to be one of the most important infrastructures during the 80s, primarily used as a transport for the coal industry. Nowadays it remains for recreational use, however, it lacks its former liveliness.
I aim to optimize the recreational aspect of the canal by incorporating it into my design.
I design a small pier for rowing / canal boats. Aesthetically creating a better view from the bar, functionally zoning different spaces and providing a relaxing outdoor seating area.
