Dear Friend of ICS,

Darryl Landau Insurance (retired)

As another year passed in the 33-year history of Interfaith Community Services (ICS), we are pleased to share the results and impact of your investment in this outreach. In the 2016-17 fiscal year, ICS once again expanded our efforts to deliver help that brings hope for our neighbors in need. • We launched a new program to prevent homelessness, Steps to Stability, funded by a special competitive grant awarded by the Office of the Arizona Attorney General, to enable those at risk of eviction to stabilize and secure new employment to increase their self-sufficiency. The program is already proving its value in helping those served to positively change the direction of their lives. • Agape International Church on the south side of Tucson became our 100th ICS faith community partner. What began with six congregations has expanded to a diverse collection of partners leveraging their resources and mobilizing volunteers in a common focus to serve the greater good. Every day at ICS, we see examples of compassionate volunteer service coordinated by our dedicated staff that often goes unheralded. Last year, 851 volunteers at ICS devoted 61,002 hours of their time, drove 148,518 miles to transport older adults, distributed nearly $3 million in emergency food and in so many ways delivered help that brought hope to neighbors experiencing life challenges. Along with that hope, came independence, greater possibility, and, so often, renewed personal pride. Thank you for standing with ICS and supporting our work. Your help brought hope and so much more for the 40,965 people we assisted in 2016-17. Serving with you,

Emergency Assistance

Sonya and her husband work hard to provide for their family, but their paychecks don’t cover their expenses. They are also rebounding from a medical emergency with their eldest daughter that brought added financial challenges. Thankfully, their daughter is now doing better. The family uses the ICS Food Bank and also receives emergency financial assistance and holiday help. Sonya quietly explains, “We don’t always have the things we need. It is comforting to know that the food bank is always here, and I can get supplies to feed my girls. Having help with food means I can pay other bills on time like rent and utilities.” Sonya involves her girls in selecting items like cereal, fresh bread and fruit so it feels more like a shopping experience than coming to a food bank. The girls also love books and enjoy choosing a few at the ICS Food Bank to take home.

the source of our monthly food bags. ICS worked with the CFB as well as Wal-Mart, Albertson’s and Basha’s stores to offer fresh produce giveaways to supplement the nutritional content of distributed food. These produce giveaways offered healthy choices and kept food from going to waste by getting it into the hands of people who needed it. More than 427,032 pounds of produce was distributed!

• 143 obtained their medications • 997 assisted with transportation, uniforms, eyeglasses and other job-related needs

Self-Sufficiency

A young mother of three, Yadrina was seeking new employment. Now that her baby was two months old, she wanted to return to work, hoping to move on from her job as a cashier to start a career in cosmetology. For weeks, Yadrina came to the ICS Northwest Job Resource Center to improve her résumé and submit applications online because she didn’t have a computer at home. She did all of this with her baby in tow, glad for the focused environment. “It was very helpful,” she said. Job Resource Center volunteers encouraged Yadrina. Her determination paid off. She secured a stylist’s position at a local salon where she has a job she prefers and earns higher wages. At the ICS Job Resource Centers, individuals like Yadrina are assisted to tap skills and resources to increase their employability.

8

Services cover job search, résumé writing, interview coaching and interfacing with potential employers. The Centers also provide classes to build financial literacy such as managing household budgets, repairing credit and building savings. ICS maintains connections with area employers to help match job seekers with local openings.

Job Resource Center Outcomes • 370 clients improved their employment readiness • 56 reported finding jobs • 30 households increased their money management skills by attending financial literacy trainings

HELP LEADS TO BRIGHTER FUTURES New Efforts to Prevent Homelessness Traditionally, ICS has provided emergency rent assistance to a client only once a year for a 30-day period. Studies show, however, that it often takes longer for someone to stabilize when they are in survival mode. Many clients arrive at ICS with a five-day eviction notice in hand, facing imminent homelessness. New grants in 2016-2017 enabled ICS to strengthen our homelessness prevention and self-sufficiency efforts by instead offering

Emergency Solutions Program (grants provided by HUD funds through Pima County and the City of Tucson) – offers up to three months of assistance, including intensive case management, for participants.

Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program Outcomes

three months of support to sustain housing, as well as personalized case management and wrap-around assistance for clients in financial distress. The extended time frame helps clients identify barriers to their success and begin to address the root causes of crisis by setting goals and taking the necessary steps to regain control of their lives. ICS is already seeing a direct correlation between the length and depth of clients’ engagement and their economic recovery.

Steps to Stability

This three-month program is funded by a homelessness prevention grant from the Office of the Arizona Attorney General. Clients receive housing assistance and case management in the first month. To get assistance for the second and third month, they participate in job-search activities and attend financial literacy workshops at ICS.

Self-Sufficiency Outcomes Comparison • 466 tax returns completed for lowand moderate-income clients to help them retain more of their money • $559,166 in Federal and State refunds returned to the community, including $244,800 in Earned Income Tax Credits VITA is presented in partnership with United Way of Tucson and Southern Arizona

Caregiving and Senior Services “You have to stay positive and be on top of your medical needs to keep healthy,” says Dan Fischer. Rides from ICS help Dan get to several doctor and therapy appointments each month. “My children are busy working and ICS alleviates some of the burden from them when they can’t take me,” he says. “My ICS drivers are reliable, and Pat, my regular driver, will often stay and wait for me until I finish my appointment.” Dan is grateful for the help he receives. “This is a vital service that ICS offers for those who are aging and unable to drive. I don’t know how I would get to all of these appointments without them, and I’m glad they are here when I need them.”

Comforting Outcomes 1,752 Individuals enabled to stay in their homes and age with dignity 29% more seniors and disabled adults served in the past year

Community Health Outreach

Interfaith Community Services offers a broad range of community-based health

education and outreach programs to support well-being. In 2016-2017, ICS expanded the reach and diversity of its health awareness and training programs with measurable results.

Mental Health First Aid trainings reduce stigma and increase help-seeking behavior for individuals and families affected by mental illness.

Mental Health Safe Space programs educate

the community about mental illness to promote healthier community response and reduce the stigma surrounding mental illness, which can be a barrier to individuals who need to seek treatment. • 15 Mental Health Safe Space trainings provided to 300 attendees at businesses, schools, faith communities, and others

12

• 12 Mental Health First Aid trainings given to 221 attendees • Attendees indicated feeling more confident in assisting individuals in mental health distress Mental Health Safe Space and Mental Health First Aid programs are funded by The Fund for Civility, Respect and Understanding at the Community Foundation for Southern Arizona, Community Partners, Inc. and The David and Lura Lovell Foundation.

Health Outreach Outcomes • 631 people attended workshops • Attendees reported an increase of between 65-77% in their knowledge after attending an ICS health education workshop.

HELP BRINGS RESOURCES FOR HEALTHIER LIVING End of Life (EOL) Advance Care Planning Conversations break

the silence of talking about death and assist individuals in completing Advance Care Directives.

In 2016-2017, ICS expanded its focus on end-of-life care to community-based workshops and individual coaching sessions to promote completion of and registration of advance care directives. Frontline ICS senior services volunteers were equipped with information and knowledge to have conversations with adults and their caregivers facing end-of-life transitions and decisions. The trainings were funded in 2016-2017 by the Shaaron Kent Endowment Fund at the Community Foundation for Southern Arizona. • 13 workshops and presentations given at 20 different congregations

• 297 people reached including 241 workshop or presentation participants, 51 internal ICS referral recipients, who were contacted, and 10 one-onone coaching sessions

As a result of the EOL workshops: • 53% of program participants indicated they have discussed their wishes with loved ones, healthcare providers, and/or spiritual leaders • 40% of program participants indicated they have completed or revised their Advance Care Directives

Care Partners Program Supports Healing at Home ICS is in the third year of a pilot program funded by The David and Lura Lovell Foundation that offers nonmedical aftercare assistance to high-risk patients transitioning from the hospital to home. Care Partners pairs specially-trained volunteers with individuals who need extra support due to limited caregivers. The program helps prevent unnecessary hospital readmissions while optimizing care outcomes for vulnerable people. Volunteers provide physical support such as rides to follow-up medical appointments and offer encouraging social interaction crucial in the healing process. In 201617, ICS expanded health care facility partnerships for this program to include

El Rio Community Health, Banner South, and Tucson Medical Center in addition to continuing our relationship with Banner University Medical Center-Tucson.

13

Volunteers

Across all of our programs, Interfaith Community Services volunteers created help and hope for thousands in our community. Transportation drivers, including the high performing ANYWHERE drivers worked with determined staff and filled all ride requests from registered ICS recipients for the entire year (current streak is 66 weeks), despite the seasonal variation through the summer. In our 2017 volunteer orientations, nearly 200 new volunteers received training and placement in volunteer positions to help others. To support the excellent work of volunteers, ICS expresses appreciation in numerous ways through our ICS Connect, health education classes, National Volunteer Appreciation Week, and the annual Open Houses at both of our offices. The work of our volunteers in the community is truly unprecedented!

Faith Community Engagement Interfaith Community Services reached a milestone in summer 2017 as Agape Christian Church International became our 100th Faith Community Partner. We are grateful for the diverse congregations who come together in a common purpose at ICS, giving their support, time and encouragement to meet local needs. Together, we bring help and hope to people seeking a compassionate place to turn. Faith communities have long been a gateway to essential resources for those in poverty and physical need. Collaboration with this network of faith communities continues to form a strong foundation at ICS for expanding community outreach and ensuring more people can be served.

Agape Christian Church International became our 100th Faith Community Partner.

Financial Reports

2016-2017

From the Treasurer Fiscal year 2016-2017 was a year of increased demand for our services at ICS. Our spending for emergency financial assistance grew 28% and families served at the food bank rose by 13%. ICS also expanded our services to seniors by 29%. While our direct services multiplied, ICS kept administrative and fundraising expenses at 12%, a testament to the strong support from our community volunteers.

remained debt free and our endowment provided additional income to fund growth of our programs. Overall, our total assets grew 1% to $5.8M. Our financial statements were audited by HBL CPAs, PC and are available on our website.
