TERRAIN Carp Ridge -‐ Long & Middle The Carp ridge is a 30 Km long rocky outcrop just west of Ottawa. It’s a mini Canadian Shield popping out of the flat and fertile Ottawa Valley farmland that surrounds it. Most of the ridge has been designated as a conservation area to be preserved from development. While most of the ridge is privately owned, the city is slowly buying up sections in the heart of the ridge as part of the preservation process. Orienteering Ottawa is fortunate to have event-‐based access to most of the area. There are two fairly distinct types of gently undulating terrain. The “Barrens terrain” refers to mostly open bare rock with a maze of lakes, marshes, and streams. The rest of the terrain is made up of forested, smooth rocky ridges, with many large and small marshes and a fair bit of rock detail. Some sections have an extensive trail network and other areas are completely wild and undisturbed. We have mapped the ridge with 2.5m contours to reflect the intricate topo detail for this type of terrain. The result is a very technically challenging area that will be a great test of your navigational skills.

Arnprior -‐ Sprint & Relay

The sprint and relay take part in the town of Arnprior, with a mix of urban areas, parkland, and forest. The forested part is a tract of old growth forest, with towering white pines and sugar maples, many root stocks, and a dense trail network. The area has only small elevation changes. Uncrossable fences, hedges and forbidden areas add challenging route choice elements to the very fast running of the forest and parkland.

TRAINING TRAINING CAMP: Saturday Oct. 4th -‐ Thursday Oct. 9th 2014 The training camp will consist of training courses on the 8 maps in the Official Training Map List. There will be one or two courses on each map. Many of these courses are from the 2012 or 2013 Ottawa O-‐Fest races while others are designed specifically for these camps. One of the courses was WorldofO's 8th best Course of the Year 2012. During the camps there will be ribbons in the forest at the marked control locations. It is up to the individual participants to set their own schedule. Participants are welcome to draw their own courses on those maps in addition to the courses provided. More details on these camps will be sent to those who have expressed an interest closer to those dates. PRE-‐NAOC2014 TOUR We are offering a one week tour combining top orienteering competitions with visits to some of Ontario's highlights. The tour will take you to majestic Niagara Falls; Toronto, Canada's largest city; and Algonquin Park Ontario's largest and oldest Provincial Park, at its most beautiful time of year. The orienteering events will introduce you to the eastern North American landscape, and between these and Algonquin Park you will have a taste of Canada's vast and wonderful wilderness.

Thursday, Oct. 2 Arrive in Ottawa, Canada's Capital, home of the 2014 North American Orienteering Championships. Accommodations can be arranged near the airport for those arriving late in the day, or near Parliament Hill for those arriving earlier who would like to spend some time visiting the city.

Friday, Oct. 3 – Sunday Oct. 5 Early morning we board the bus for Rochester, NY, for the US Orienteering Championships. The Rochester club will hold a sprint, middle and long event on Friday, Saturday & Sunday in the beautiful Letchworth Park, often referred to as the 'grand canyon of the east'. The park will have its full fall colours on display at this time. If you have non-‐orienteers travelling with you, Rochester offers them many options for them to spend their day. We will be staying in or near Rochester for 3 nights.

Monday, Oct. 6 -‐ Thursday Oct.9 We travel to Niagara Falls where we will view the 3 waterfalls which form the highest flow rate of any waterfall in the world. The largest, Horseshoe Falls, has a vertical drop of 50 metres and is a must on any bucket list. Here you will have the option of riding to the base of the falls on the Maid of the Mist, taking a stroll along the Niagara gorge or visiting the many other attractions in this beautiful city. In the evening we will be in the city of Hamilton at the base of the Niagara Escarpment. In Toronto, options include lunch at the 360 degree revolving restaurant 350 metres above the city of Toronto, a fun O meet on Toronto island, an O meet on the Niagara escarpment, or a walk in Hyde Park – a beautiful oasis in the midst of Canada's largest city. We take a 4 hour drive to the heart of Algonquin Park which will be at the peak of its colour season with the reds, golds and greens of the Canadian maple trees. We will be there early enough to take a stroll at dusk when the beavers and other wild life are most active. Take a hike in the park or perhaps a short canoe trip into the wilderness where all you will hear will be the birds and dip of your paddle into the clear water. We end in the quiet Ottawa Valley Town of Arnprior, host community for the NAOC2014 festival, where you will establish your home for the next 4 nights, ahead of the crowds.

Friday, Oct. 10 The bus will pick you up at your hotel in Arnprior and take you into Ottawa, the nation’s capital, for a morning tour of Parliament Hill overlooking the Ottawa River, the province of Quebec and the Gatineau Hills – more great colour. After lunch you will be dropped off back at your hotel or at the model event. This is the end of the tour but the start of a great weekend of orienteering.

We hope you will join us for this wonderful Canadian experience. If you are interested or have questions about the tour including cost, please e-‐mail Lorna Guttormson at tour@NAOC2014.ca.

FESTIVAL

Our aim is to make NAOC2014 a fun and festive experience. With our partners the Town of Arnprior, we are planning several initiatives to make this aim come true. We will present more details on our website and facebook page as they are established. Many of the initiatives include: OPENING & CLOSING CEREMONY: Wear your club colours and join the parade, let’s show the town what Orienteering is all about. MARKETPLACE: While Orienteering Ottawa loves arena production, this year with our partners in Arnprior, we are going further and adding a marketplace full of local artisans food and other vendors. SPECTATING: On first sight of the Sprint Arena you will say “WOW! What a view!”. There will even be bleachers. We will also have souvenir programs and an area for fans to collect autographs. KIDZONE: We are planning some great activities to keep the young ones active while you are out on course.
