Mental Discomfort, Dormant Diseases and Medical Diagnostics

-Humanizing Exponential Medicine-

Exponential medicine will alter the profession of the physician as we know it today. The coming medical exponentiality of the next 20-30 years can be turned into a blessing, if we will gain a fundamentally new view of the living human body. Therefore, it is necessary to leave the post mortem diagnostics, to focus on the natural cycle of dormant diseases and understand the role of psychological stress as trigger of illnesses. Exponential medical technologies can help us to treat and heal the patient in real time and to develop new models of medical intervention, which will lead as result to a humanistic systems medicine.

Death is a dignitary, who when he comes announced is to be received with the formal manifestations of respect, even by those who are most familiar with him. (Ambrose G. Bierce)

Our Living Body In the mid -1970s, slow matrix changes in psychological science signaled on the international radar of the researcher community. The classical stimulusresponse-behavior model was challenged by human cognition; this was mainly due to the advent of behavioral neuroscience and brain research. At the same time, many new medical concepts of aging, disease and longevity emerged, because the average life span of individuals extended substantially, in historical terms. From this cognitive viewpoint, the scientific attention shifted towards the human organism as a ‘living tissue factory’, e.g. medical studies on the electron transport chain in the living cell cycle were gaining momentum. The basic working assumption was, that between stimulus and response, something like ‘mentalization’ must happen, and public (psycho-social) mental health became a hot issue as well as new psycho-medical concepts of the living human organism, like saluto-genesis. As we are now gradually entering the technical stage of exponential medicine (real-time observation and intervention, in physiological terms), these scientific problems of clinical practice and research method are rapidly becoming a humanitarian challenge as many chronic illnesses and diseases seem to possess epidemic qualities, concerning the global integration of human health issues.

Psychological Stress Mental stress is the provocateur of all dormant diseases, which work by toxic chemicals, virus latency, certain types of radiation and genetic disposition. The Warburg-hypothesis on the origin of cancer cells can also be linked to unhealthy degrees of psychological stress, where acidity is the physio-chemical trigger; the findings of Selye do complement the physiological interplay of stress and mentalization. The human higher nervous system works as an electro-chemical signal transduction chain; psychophysical stress alters the natural transmission patterns in the cell cycles and causes degenerative cellular reactions, which are the primary foundation of malign cellular mutations, like cancer cells. A healthy immune system, that operates in chronobiological harmony, generally selects malign cells by autophagic functions in the blood circuit, which also points to

environmental factors as nutrition, sleep, (de)hydration, fresh air and the like, i.e. a healthy and balanced life-style. Exponential medical technologies could help us to earlier detect and prevent dormant diseases, which are triggered by psychological stress. Psychoneuroimmunology (PNI) is one of the scientific fields that is pivotal to advance medical diagnostics, in preventive terms. The hallmarks of cancer are six gradual signals of malign cellular damage (beyond repair) and imply now an epitome for diseases of our civilization, i.e. symbolizing unwanted growth.

The Age of Longevity Transhumanism and techno-singularity are modern ideological movements that also want to undo the natural cyclicity of the human body. Although it is scientifically not serious to think that the natural physicality of our living body will be subject to singularity, it is reasonable to expect that the coming exponential age (exponential knowledge automation) will bring humanistic and technical breakthroughs in medical science, if the technological potential can be harnessed by a consequent scientific strategy, e.g. the medical disconnection of aging and disease, like forever healthy longevity programs. Death is programmed into the human genome, but it may be possible to arrive at healthy levels of longevity, which do contribute to individual and societal well-being. Medical diagnostics and clinical practice must be rethought, in terms of early prevention and a patient-oriented approach. The biological burden of becoming old must not end up in a psychological curse, where daily vegetating is the only alternative to dying. Many taboos must be broken, concerning the medical discussion, if aging is a disease or a result of natural cyclicity. A better insight into the physicality of human natural cycles and the organic workings of the living body should become a medical imperative, leaving the mechanistic and post mortem view of human illness and disease. The daily interplay of the psychological and physiological level of human existence needs of a holistic method, which comprises the medical interaction of the human mind and living matter. It is to be expected that the temporal borders of longevity will be extended by exponential medicine, and this will become a great issue for human societies and applied medicine. Therefore, it is necessary to gain an appropriate understanding of human death and dying, without ‘theological’ anxieties, philosophical escapism and spiritual prejudice, because disease, disaster and death are real life events, i.e. we must review the whole human life cycle by the

means of medical science, for example by in silico medicine: diagnostics, treatment and prevention can be modelled via the virtual physiological human by computational and visual methods of simulation and testing; via advanced probe technology, a new interstitial organ was discovered in 2015, which seems to be crucial for the biological transfer of certain vital fluids in the living human body. Such new anatomic and physiological insights have, for example, a decisive scientific relevance for the progress of cancer research and prevention.

Staying Sane in a Chaotic World The unnaturalness of the human nature has a biological (body), social (interaction) and cultural (interpretation) dimension; the physical workings of the higher nervous system do clearly distinguish veterinary and human medicine, but it is difficult to identify the pathological borderline. Psychological science is a definite offshoot of medical research, but the practical and holistic application of both disciplines is still work in progress. The civilizational order of human culture is fighting an ongoing battle with natural cycles, fractal chaos and physical entropy; concerning detectable laws of harmony and its mystery, we seem to be still in an embryonic stage, with respect to conscious, methodical and logic action. In addition, the medical profession must wrestle with ethical dilemmas, which will be strongly amplified by exponential medicine, covering the whole human life cycle. Entering the gates of sanity and healing will be a future medical imperative, leaving the industrial assembly line of profiteering from disease and developing a patient-oriented approach towards treatment and healing. This may sound like a tall humanistic order, but biological systems medicine is the pathway to new professional prototypes for the physician. Consequently, only a high spiritual and physical ethos can make this matrix change happen to enhance the quality of life and death for all of us. This ethos of physical (natural) spirituality can be formulated as follows: It is the freedom from fear and want, to act and to create freely, the power and wisdom to live in harmony and love, with honor towards all living creatures.
