Alter-House

Year Completed: 2019

When building or a work of architecture becomes associated with mere construction of houses, it becomes habitual, and we tend to forget what we mean by architecture as a place of dwelling. It is our everydayness that dulls our understanding of architecture as a dwelling. Importantly – this project asks us to rethink our understanding of a house – thus its title – Alter-House

Barnacle of the Woodlands

Year Completed: 2022

Along a trail in Cement Creek Redwood Forest, Victoria, lies a massive wooden pavilion that is shaped like a seashell. Made of beautifully finished wood, the giant structure sits amidst the towering redwood trees, looking as though they are ready to project, or perhaps capture sounds from different corners of the woods.

With a persistence of using wood throughout the entire construction, this method of construction inlays the woods together like a puzzle piece, producing a beautiful pavilion in the absence of man-made materials.

‘Barnacle of the Woodlands’ is a pavilion that is shaped like a seashell, along with protruding barnacle-like ‘megaphones’ that amplify and reverberate the sound of its surroundings within its structure

Situated along the Redwood Forest walk, visitors are in for a delightful surprise when they come across this landmark halfway through the walking trail.

The pavilion offers one a place to rest their feet, as well as their thoughts. Sit, sleep, think, and listen. It is an open library with just one book - Mother nature.

The Arborist

Year Completed: 2022

Perched on the trunk of trees, the Arborist borrows the definition of a ‘tree surgeon’, inserting itself onto the trunk of a tree in an attempt to create an offgrid, habitable extension. Occupying a floor area of approximately 25m2, the treehouse boasts a compact, yet fully functional living space that comes complete with the essentials needed for a conventional house.

Recollection

Year Completed: 2021

Recollection is an education centre that is not housed under a conventional roof, but rather defined by a series of folds and overlapping edges, creating a sense of calming excitement and childlike wonder by embodying the feeling of origami. In an attempt to adopt a concept of ‘unfolding’ spaces, a semi-open playgroundlike structure is created. The semi-open structure also provides pockets of space in between, enhancing vision and breathability.

The Turbine Shop

Year Completed: 2022

The Turbine Shop, situated in the Industrial Precinct of Cockatoo Island, is a tall and long metal shed, shaped like an aircraft hangar. The building is chosen to be repurposed into the Sustainable School of Fashion & Textile Design. While preserving its existing metal skeleton, contemporary materials, namely wood and polycarbonate, are used to “sandwich” the weathered metal frames, showing stark contrast between the old and the new. The name of the game revolves around adaptive reuse.

The absence of floor plates, in addition to its long footprint, points out a challenge in drawing light into its interior. A loft-style construction approach was initially considered. Upon further refinement, a “green strip”, or an atrium that acts as a light well was implemented to bring light into this long and narrow space, providing visual permeability and negating the feeling of constriction for its occupants.
