RESPECTING WILDLIFE Jekyll Island is a state park with acres of wilderness. Please remember, when you visit Jekyll Island, you are a guest in this wild habitat. Treat all wildlife with respect. Feeding, harassing, approaching, injuring, or removing any wildlife is against the law. Please contact the Jekyll Island Wildlife Response for general wildlife concerns at 912.222.5992.
DID YOU KNOW? The hard, white shell left by a dead sand dollar is called a test. A good rule of thumb is to “take the test,” and leave brown on the ground. The brown ones are still alive!
Two species of venomous snake can be found on Jekyll Island: rattlesnakes and cottonmouths. Neither are common in areas where people spend much time. If you encounter a snake, do not approach it. The animal will likely move on if you give it space.
The knobbed whelk is the state shell of both Georgia and New Jersey. These big snails are a fairly common animal found along the inter-tidal beaches and marshes of Jekyll Island. Feel free to take these shells as a souvenir, but only if they’re uninhabited.
Do not feed alligators. It is illegal and unsafe. Be aware of your surroundings – alligators may be present in open water. Do not approach an alligator of any size. Do not attempt to retrieve a golf ball that has fallen in water or near an alligator.
E DU C AT I O N & CO N S E RVAT I O N
Why is the water brown? Large tides push and pull the water from the marshes to the ocean. The tides mix up sediment and microscopic plant & animal life from the marsh, which can make the water a little murky. The water is not polluted. In fact, wildlife thrives here because the waters are healthy and rich in life.

JEKYLL'S BEACHES
DRIFTWOOD BEACH Consistently voted one of America’s “Ten Most Romantic Beaches,” Driftwood Beach is an escape to another world. Ancient driftwood monuments line the waterfront, creating an unforgettable backdrop. Perhaps that’s one reason USA TODAY featured it as one of the best Southern beaches for a weekend escape. GREAT DUNES* This is Jekyll Island’s most popular beach for families. The 20-acre, beachfront park is easily accessible and offers several picnic pavilions, an activities deck, play areas, and bocce ball and volleyball courts. Ample parking and public beach access with restrooms and showers are available.
GLORY BEACH* Graceful sea oats and pristine sand dunes line Glory Beach on the south end of Jekyll Island. You’ll be amazed at how wide this beach is – and you’ll see why movie scouts chose to film portions of “Glory” here. Glory Boardwalk is next to the soccer complex on the Island’s south end. SOUTH DUNES With an elevated boardwalk crossing 20-foot sand dunes, this park features beach access, an observation deck, and a freshwater pond. Picnic tables and grills along with open-air and screenedin picnic pavilions make this park the perfect spot for a relaxing family event. ST. ANDREWS* This beach is a short walk from Jekyll Point, the southern-most tip of the Island. It’s a popular spot for watching migratory birds as well as groups of dolphins. The picnic area features a two-story wildlife viewing platform and the Wanderer historical marker. *Accessible beach access points are located at Great Dunes, Glory Beach, Beach Village, and St. Andrews. Beach-going wheelchairs are available at no charge by calling 912.635.2368 daily 9 a.m.-5 p.m.
