An Interview with

Boom Gallery co-founders Ren Inei & Kate Jacoby

The idea of starting up an art gallery was triggered by an open day in an old historic factory building before it became the home of Little Creatures here in Geelong. We could see the potential for showing art in a setting like this. Geelong at this time had many older industrial buildings ready for repurposing and we soon found our space within the old R.S & S Woollen Mills in Newtown. It’s a wonderful old building that has provided many opportunities for business growth. Boom Gallery is more than a gallery, it houses multiple exhibition spaces, an artist-in-residence platform, a café, and a store selling handmade ceramics, jewellery, and more. What was the impetus for opening each of these spaces? From the outset we really wanted to include a café and a design/object gallery as part of our business model. We figured that these would be a great way to encourage visitors into the broader gallery and in particular interact with our monthly exhibitions. We do sublet over 50 spaces, studios and offices which has helped to create a vibrant and dynamic creative community in Rutland Street. We have hosted a huge amount of functions and events over the years including artist talks, dinners, book launches, dance performances, design markets, etc. This has been great fun and a great way to add to the cultural fabric of Geelong.

05

jelliscraig.com.au Tell us about the vision you had and why you opened Boom Gallery in 2011.

In Focus | Summer 23/24

Boom Gallery has been drawing visitors to Geelong and the greater Bellarine Peninsula since 2011. The idea was born by locals and owners, Ren Inei and Kate Jacoby, in response to a lack of dedicated arts spaces in the area. We sat down with Ren and Kate to discuss their selection process for exhibiting artists, what individual strengths they bring to running the gallery, and what is next for Boom.

06 In Focus | Summer 23/24

The space in which Boom Gallery sits in Newtown is unique in its own right. Tell us about the Gallery’s home. When we first opened in 2011 the zoning changed from industrial to mixed use. The impact of this change and the opportunities that the former industrial buildings in the street offered triggered quite a lot of development in the area. We love being a part of this creative precinct that has enabled a lot of very small businesses the chance to grow and prosper. We are on the banks of the Barwon River and just off the fabulous Pakington Street so it’s a fantastic place to be.

There are so many amazing artists and makers, how do you discern which of these artists will have the chance to exhibit at Boom Gallery? Our first exhibition only included local artists that were known to us. Over the years as we have grown our stable of regular artists includes many that live and work outside of Victoria. This mix of artists provides visitors to the gallery an opportunity to gain a broad snapshot of current contemporary arts practice across the country. We work with artists who have a vigorous and dedicated arts practice. We also only look to work with artists who are great to work with. Artists who are professional, friendly, organised and reliable. Like any good relationship we also try to act in this way towards them. What is your personal history with Geelong? We have both grown up in Geelong and love our region. Growing up here really does generate a passion for wanting to contribute to it in a positive way. What do you love most about the area of Geelong and the Bellarine Peninsula? The location is amazing. We love our beautiful Corio Bay, our beaches and coastal towns. In Geelong we appreciate the diversity of our suburbs, each with their own unique character, attitude and identity. The people of our region are hard working, resilient and humble.

After 12 years in business Boom has needed to be agile and open to change, morphing and responding to an assortment of challenges and opportunities (this has been especially the case over the last few years). As a business we want to grow and evolve, both physically and conceptually enriching the cultural fibre of Geelong We look forward to continuing to work on behalf of some of Australia’s best artists and designers.

The home & interior trends to know in 2024 Sophie Lewis Editor at est living

We’re delighted to have Sophie Lewis, Editor at renowned design authority and publisher est living, guest write for In Focus. Here, Sophie explores the eight overarching themes observed at this year’s Milan Design Week and Salone del Mobile that will inform home and interior trends in 2024.

Nature The fair revealed nature was a constant source of inspiration for the design of furniture and objects and how they were presented, as seen in furniture designer La Manufacture’s exhibit, which featured floral arrangements and nature-inspired soundscapes and scents.

Colour Rich and vivid colours characterised this year’s Milan Design Week and Salone del Mobile, specifically red; a hugely symbolic colour across multiple standout exhibits. Fashion brands helmed the exploration of colour, such as LOEWE. Their exhibit showed the humble stick chair transformed by colour and texture through the artistry of weavers and artisans. The use of colour, texture and metallic surfaces was also nostalgic for the 1970s. Prominent furniture brands re-released iconic products in their original colours, such as the Zanotta multi-coloured Sciangai 50 coat stand – originally sketched as multi-coloured in 1973 – and only just released in these colours fifty years later.

Diesel Living with Moroso Pop Up Showroom

Brutalist A stripped-back, Brutalist thread defined certain spaces and objects at this year’s Milan Design Week and Salone del Mobile. Australian lighting designer Henry Wilson was one of 20 designers to reveal his lighting in a deconsecrated church, while fellow Australian designer Tom Fereday presented his Cor light collection – large sculptural lamps carved from travertine. Travertine has been a clear material of choice in recent years, but the fair indicated it was still a go-to for designers in Milan in 2024 and beyond.

Freeform Organic-shaped rugs typified the theme of ‘freeform’ at Milan Design Week and Salone del Mobile, such as English designer Faye Toogood’s celebration of Henri Matisse’s work through a curvacious and, at times, playful furniture and rug collection.

Tom Fereday Cor Light Collection

Quiet materiality was further highlighted in a strong sense of social responsibility as designers demonstrated a move towards a more sustainable way of production and the value of craftsmanship.

Moodiness

Exhibitors at this year’s Salone del Mobile placed almost equal importance on their outdoor furniture range and maximising a home’s connection to the outdoors. Some brands also translated popular indoor designs into outdoor counterparts, and the biennial Euroluce lighting event saw more portable lighting than ever before, further leaning into the idea of ‘indoor-outdoor’ living.

Beyond colour, a moodiness pervaded several installations during the design week, where dark and deep colour palettes enveloped spaces to create a sense of arrival and a feeling of ‘exhale’.

As explored in est living’s inaugural Milan special issue.

Creative Direction Studio Blanco, Greta Cevenini styling, Salva Lopez Photography

There was a clear renaissance for glass and resin across furniture, lighting and accessories at Milan Design Week and Salone del Mobile, led by Italian designers such as Draga and Aurel.

The theme of quiet materiality through Milan Design Week and Salone del Mobile reflected how materials could be expressive and, at the same time, quiet and neutral. This extended to the new lighting releases and a consistent theme of diffused light; materials such as ceramic or paper creating a soft, ambient glow.

What to do in your neighbourhood this summer During the summer period our lifestyle areas in Victoria, from Woodend, Castlemaine and Daylesford in the state’s north-west, to the coastal regions on both peninsulas of Port Phillip Bay – Bellarine on one side and Mornington on the other, become vibrant hubs of activity. The regions fill with day-trippers and weekenders alike, all choosing to spend their summer breaks surrounded by beautiful natural surrounds, fantastic galleries, great places to eat and plenty of history.

The team members at Jellis Craig’s lifestyle offices – Barwon Heads, Woodend, Castlemaine, Daylesford, Sorrento, and Rye, shared with us some of their favourite places to go, where to eat, and things to do, just in time for the summer season.

Im H a n m ha es ag g ing Rock, New Rang ev ia Vi sit Macedon

DO Until the end of January in Barwon Heads, Wonderland Spiegeltent by the Sea will be presenting incredible live entertainment for all ages, from the circus and cabaret, to live music, magic, comedy and more. Over in Ballarat, Summer Sundays in the Botanical Gardens returns for the month of January. The event is a series of free concerts, complete with live music, food trucks and a garden bar, set in the beautiful Ballarat Botanical Gardens. Bring your friends and family, relax, and soak up the sounds of summer. Daylesford favourite, Wombat Hill Botanic Gardens is the perfect destination for a family picnic on a warm summer’s day. Whilst in the area, drop in to the muchloved Lavandula Swiss Italian Farm, located ten minutes north of Daylesford and sitting in the picturesque farmlands of Shepherds Flat. Visitors will be able to roam one hundred acres of gardens, visit the onsite eatery and bar, spend some time with farm animals and explore the large range of aromatherapy products made on the farm. Lavandula is a must-visit all year round, but the best month to visit is January when the lavender is in full bloom.

Newstead Live is an Australian folk-roots music festival in the historic country town of Newstead, near Castlemaine. The event has been running for over twenty years and takes place each year over the last weekend in January, when a range of diverse and highly regarded international and national artists perform in live music venues, concert spaces, workshops, impromptu sessions, spoken word performances, and more. In nearby Maldon, the highlight of the year is the inaugural Maldon Twilight Dinner, taking place on the 20th of January 2024. Attendees are treated to a range of fabulous food, wine, and entertainment.

In Woodend, in central Victoria, visitors to the area can experience the mystery of Hanging Rock at night, with the Hanging Rock Night Walk, taking place over various evenings in late summer. The guided night walk of the Reserve includes a tour with an experienced ranger, where attendees may discover gliders, wallabies, native birds, bats, possums, and other native animals.

Staying on the Peninsula, albeit for a more relaxed afternoon, head to newly opened and much-loved Alba Thermal Springs & Spa where guests can enjoy heated geothermal mineral waters or book in any number of indulgent spa or massage experiences. Visitors to the region can also enjoy the Wine Food Farmgate Trail - a delicious gourmet adventure that leads guests to the best Mornington Peninsula wineries as well as food and farmgate experiences. Over in Mount Martha and for the more active among us, the yearly Mount Martha Annual Diamond Swim is once again back on the 26th December. For something equally decadent on the other side of the Port Phillip Bay, visit the Lon Spa at Lon Retreat in Point Londsdale.

Lavandula Swiss Italian Farm, Hepburn Image via Daylseford Macedon Life

For a day of history and nature on the Mornington Peninsula, head to the Point Nepean National Park, where visitors can walk or cycle through a rugged coastal landscape and enjoy panoramic ocean and bay views. You can also explore military forts and tunnels, learn about the people who passed through the Quarantine Station – and see fascinating artefacts spanning back over 150 years.

The Hepburn Bathhouse in Daylesford has been a mainstay for visitors to the area for a number of years, and the iconic spa isn’t going anywhere. Visit for mineral rich waters, mineral wellness experiences, and specifically designed wellness packages. Over in Ballarat is Ballarat’s Sanctuary Day Spa, a luxurious day spa that focuses on lasting wellbeing through holistic healing and nurturing treatments.

EAT A regional getaway is all about celebrating the good things – from long, languid lunches, to wine tastings, and relaxed dinners. Larder Café in Daylesford is an essential stop for coffee, breakfast, brunch, or lunch. This café has a Melbourne northside vibe and is perfect for people-watching. A must visit, The Lake House is one of Victoria’s most iconic hotels, with an award-winning restaurant serving modern Australian cuisine. Ingredients are sourced on site, and a visit is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Over in Waubra near Ballarat, a visit to Wayward Winery for delightful share plates and delicious wine is the perfect weekend lunch experience. Another winery worth a visit is Eastern Peake Winery, which offers tickets for guided winery tours, barrel samples, wine flights and regional produce boards. In the Macedon Ranges, Mount Towrong Vineyard – a small family owned and operated vineyard, situated 600m above sea level with direct views of Mount Macedon and Mount Towrong is a much-loved favourite.

Basils Farm, Swan Bay Image via Visit Geelong & The Bellarine

On the coast, there is an abundance of places to enjoy a long lunch or decadent dinner. On the Bellarine, start with lunch at Basils Farm in Swan Bay and enjoy beautiful views over the water, seasonal fare picked straight from their on-site garden, and light wines. For dinner, newly opened in January this year is local-favourite Tommy Gunns in Barwon Heads. Visit for elevated classics and a delightful wine list. On the other side of the bay on the Mornington Peninsula is a plethora of delightful spots, including Audreys the restaurant and bar sitting on the highest floor of the new Continental Hotel and for your morning caffeine hit and readymade meals, visit St Pauls General Store in Sorrento and stock up on fresh produce, natural wine, and coffee. In Mount Martha, South Beach Project is a local favourite for coffees and breakfast fare. Set at the far end of the Esplanade in an idyllic beachside setting, complemented with views of Port Phillip Bay and Melbourne City, the café is perfect for special lunches, larger functions, or just a casual spot to eat.
