Business of Design ZENN DESIGN

Renowned for producing some of the most considered, high-quality furniture in Australia, Zenn Design work with Melbourne’s most fashionable home enthusiasts. Zenn Design offers full customisation, ensuring that each piece of furniture is tailored to each customer.

We sat down with Founder Hannah Goldberg to learn more about the custom furniture business and how they seamlessly blend minimalistic forms with contemporary design elements.

Why did you start Zenn Design and what is your vision for the business?

I started Zenn Design 4 years ago. I noticed a gap in the market for locally-made, high quality, sustainable custom furniture, and thus Zenn Design was born.

The journey to launching Zenn Design was one that evolved quite organically. Starting out as more of a passion and hobby back in March 2020 (aka, pandemic era), I created Zenn Design to fill the gap for well priced, high quality Australian made custom furniture, with fast lead times. Fast forward, and it’s developed into so much more than what we could have ever imagined. It’s been a big couple of years, and we’ve grown quite quickly (which has been really humbling).

Talk us through Zenn Design’s creative process, from client enquiry to delivery including inspiration and material sourcing.

It depends on the piece required and if it's a 100% custom design or an existing design with minimal customisation. If custom - we take the brief from our client, either by imagery, sketch or drawing inspo. We then take it to our in-house design team and have it drawn up in line with our machinery. We send these drawings to the customer and quote. If approved, we then proceed to final fabric selections, final quote stage and then manufacturing. As we are made in Melbourne, our fabrication lead times are great and the process only takes 4-6 weeks.

Anelevated, highlycraftedtimelesslook which is on trend now and will stand the testoffashioncycles.

What are the typical goals your clients are trying to achieve?

An elevated, highly crafted timeless look which is on trend now and will stand the test of fashion cycles. Every client wants something bespoke that resonates with their personality.

How has the demand for custom furniture grown over the years?

The demand for custom furniture has steadily increased over the years due to various factors such as changing lifestyles, preferences for personalised designs, and the desire for high-quality, durable pieces. We started in COVID during a period where most were spending time at home. We spend so much of our time at home, let’s make it as amazing as we can possibly afford!

Zenn Design has created spaces for an impressive list of influential Melburnians. Can you tell us about a favourite project or one that pushed your creative boundaries?

Yes this would have to be for Bec Judd! Bec had a very strong idea on what she wanted her new bed to look and feel like. We love these types of projects and clients who just want to push their individual design aesthetic and make a really stunning piece for their home. My team worked hard to ensure this piece was different to anything else currently available and was to the highest possible craftsmanship. Bec was thrilled which makes it so worthwhile.

Can you share any upcoming plans for Zenn Design? Are there any new product lines or collaborations on the horizon?

Here’s an exclusive… We will be launching a new dining stool line to complement our best selling Archie Stools. We are currently looking at a second showroom location. We also have some really incredible collaborations coming up and an exciting luxe giveaway with a big skincare brand who we are obsessed with!

Where do you find your design inspiration?

My inspiration comes from a variety of sources, from worldly designs to my everyday surroundings. Whether it's scrolling through Instagram, taking a walk along the beach, or shopping at the grocery store, I find inspiration in all aspects of life. I’m also inspired by the pared-back Australian lifestyle. I love to travel and had the pleasure of attending Milan Design Week last year which was such a major source of inspiration. My main goal has always been to create enduring, sustainable and locally-made furniture that will surpass trends and anchor the mood of a space.

MINUTES WITH HANNAH GOLDBERG

Tell us about your signature style. An embodiment of minimalist luxury and understated elegance. It reflects a refined simplicity that speaks volumes through its subtlety and sophistication.

Favourite materials to work with?

Anything overly textured. I’m loving the incredible textured fabrics by S. Harris found at The Textile Company. I have a huge appreciation for handwoven textiles - a fabric house in Paris called Misia has been handweaving stunning textiles for decades.

Favourite hidden gem stores in Melbourne for home decor?

Pepite - I always find unique pieces.

Jan Vogelpoel Ceramics for stunning designs.

I'm a big fan of both Design Stuff and Country Road Home for their timeless elegance.

What is one skill you want to master?

Prioritising my day off!

What is your favourite room at home and why?

It has to be my Master bedroom. I've recently refreshed it and it's so lovely. I have custom Zenn Design pieces, creating a very zen atmosphere (no pun intended!). The gentle, wind-down lighting is perfect for relaxing after a long day. Plus, it offers breathtaking sunset views.

Interior Decorator, Alessandra Smith of Alessandra Smith Design is an emerging interior decorator in Melbourne, focused on the curation of furniture, lighting, art and objects in high-end residential projects.

We visited Alessandra at Elwood Residence, a recently completed project in Melbourne’s bayside with thoughtful, layered interiors that are both timeless and soulful. Here, Alessandra takes us through how to inject a space with personality and how to make a bedroom calm and comforting this winter.

How to inject a space with personality
A sitting room should reflect your unique style, so don’t be afraid to experiment in this space to add character and charm.

Confident use of colour

Pick a colour palette and stick to it. Think about how you want the room to feel and use colour as a way of cultivating an emotion. In Elwood Residence, our clients were unafraid of breaking the rules and therefore we have opted for a dark, moody hue and extended the colour on each of the walls and onto the ceiling for a beautiful immersive effect.

Art and objects

Showcase pieces that you’ve collected and that are meaningful to you. Art and objects are personal choices that help to tell the story of you and your family. They can spark conversation and help to create a space that feels truly unique. In this room, we have included several vintage pieces that our client has collected over time, each with their own story and background.

Mixing materials

To really pack a punch in a space, I recommend incorporating a variety of contrasting materials. Soft, hard, shiny, matte, tactile and everything in between. In this room, we have mixed a number of metals – brass and chrome, two different marbles, and smoked glass, along with velvet and timber. Mixing materials adds interest and you really appreciate the tactility of a material when you see it in contrast to its opposite.

Incorporate vintage pieces

Vintage objects carry with them a beautiful patina and add a sense of rich history to a space. I love to mix them with contemporary pieces for a timeless and sophisticated result. In this room, we have the Sesann sofa designed in 1970 by Gianfranco Frattini and the 70s Alky armchairs which were re-upholstered in a modern patterned fabric.

How to make your bedroom calm and comforting
Thoughtful interior decoration will set the scene for a truly tranquil and comforting bedroom.

Colour

Colour is often overlooked as an interior feature in a bedroom, but it presents so many opportunities to bring a space to life. Colour can be highlighted through bedding, curtains, artworks or even wall colour. In the primary bedroom of Elwood Residence, we’ve chosen a soothing grey/blue colour on the walls which is then picked up in the artworks and bedding.

Materiality and texture

To really appreciate the different textures in a room, I recommend mixing fabrics and textures. In the bedroom, we have used luxurious sateen bedding, a woollen throw, velvet cushions and linen curtains. It’s this mix of textures that helps to create interest and amp up those cosy feelings.

May 2024 In Focus Magazine 10

Warm lighting

Overhead lighting is rarely needed in a bedroom, so I recommend switching off the overheads and turning on the lamps. Ensure the bulbs emit a soft, warm glow and consider whether you want the lamp to provide ambience or whether you need directional lighting if you read in bed.

Layering

Layering with personal objects adds a beautiful additional dimension to any space. Meaningful spaces are made this way through the use of artworks, objects collected on travels, hand-made ceramics, candles, books and more. There is nothing more special than a space that resonates with each homeowner, reflecting their lives, experiences, and tastes.

Alessandra Smith Design offers interior decorating for residential projects, encompassing home or colour consultations, art and object curation, or a full design service. If you would like to speak to Alessandra about your next design project, visit her website to book a consult.

Brooke Reynolds My Neighbourhood with

With its thriving arts, entertainment and foodie culture and beautiful mix of heritage and contemporary housing, the regions of Ballarat and Daylesford, offer an idyllic lifestyle that perfectly blends the best of country and city living. We sat down with Sales Consultant at Jellis Craig Ballarat, Brooke Reynolds, to discuss living and working in one of Australia's most liveable areas and find out her favourite gems in Central Victoria.

What do you love most about working in real estate?

Everything! I love the flexibility - I don’t miss any of my kids sports days, school events or parent/teacher interviews and their Saturday basketball games are the first appointments that go in my diary. I also love that you get out what you put in. I love that no two days are the same and that I’m constantly challenged. Finally the people - I get to work with people from all walks of life and help my clients through all sorts of life changes. Life changes, I get to be a part of that, and that's pretty special! The trust they put in me still blows me away and I’m grateful for it every day.

What makes the Central Victoria region such a great place to live and work?

We are incredibly close to Metro Melbourne and the coast. You can get in the car and drive an hour and be in either the hustle and bustle of the city or the chilled feels of Geelong and the coastline. Working regionally has a more “relaxed feel”, you have familiar faces everywhere you go and in terms of business that means you can rely heavily on referral leads of people who know and trust you.

Lifestyle images provided by: Hotelmix, Visit Victoria, FirstClass

Do you have a favourite sold property? What made that so memorable?

Yes, 45 Gillies Street Alfredton. It was a stunning home that got featured in many local, Victorian and even nationwide sites and editorials. I had sold the vendors previous home and they had full trust in what I was capable of. After one of the most popular campaigns in my 8 years as an agent, the home sold for a record result for the area.

Talk to us about tree-change buyers. What are people looking for in the region?

The biggest draw card is value for money. In Ballarat you can find entry level homes for under $500,000 or a stunning period home for under a million. Ballarat has everything you would want from a regional town including hospitals and infrastructure but all the feels of a small country town.

If you weren’t working in real estate, what would you be doing?

I’ve always wanted to be in the police force. My dad was a police officer and I always thought I would be great at it. I also love cooking, something myself and my 3 siblings learnt to do quite well from a very early age from our mum who ran a food business our whole childhood. Maybe one day I’ll do something in this space?

What is the best piece of advice you’ve received?

“You will never please everyone”. It took me a long time to realise that I’m not going to be everyone’s cup of tea and that’s OK. It helped me enormously to move on from missed business and to move onto the next bigger and better opportunity.

Brooke's must visit places in Daylesford

If you had a friend visiting from Melbourne, where would you take them out for dinner.

Ballarat has come a long way in the past decade on the food scene and we have countless amazing restaurants and eateries to choose from. My favourite is one in my home town “The Shared Table”, a boutique restaurant using local produce, with great service and a lovely feel.

Tell us about ‘home’

Ballarathascomealongwayinthe pastdecadeinthefoodsceneandwe havecountlessamazingrestaurantsand eateries to choose from.

I have 3 kids Mia, Jack and Will and a loving husband Matt, as well as a dog called Roxy, 6 sheep and countless budgies. We live on 5 acres in a small leafy suburb in the south of Ballarat, called Buninyong. We built our family home which has beautiful views across the tree tops. My family and I are basketball obsessed and when I’m not watching the NBL or local NBL1, playing, watching the kids play or running them around to training, we fill the days with gardening, cooking and hosting friends and family.

What is a must-read book or podcast you recommend?

Honestly I’m not a big reader, I find it hard to sit still and read, however I read a book that really touched me “The Happiest Man on Earth” a beautiful story of one man’s holocaust experience and how he was still able to find gratitude, joy and forgiveness after such horrendous adversity.
