Anniversary Card Audrey shows you how she coloured the image for her pretty Anniversary card using Copic markers.

Step 1

When I set to do this tutorial, I realized it would be probably be more effective on video, but since I have limited computer abilities and no idea how to make a video, I have done my best to show this in photos. All marker numbers refer to Copic colors. All combos used on this image include 2 or 3 colors with the

exception of the ice bucket, which uses 4 and a couple smaller areas that use 2. For today’s Jellypark challenge of Love, I decided to go with a gatefold – here is my preliminary, bare bones template for the card – 1 4inch x 8 inch piece scored in the middle and a 6 inch x 11 inch piece scored at 3 inches.

Step 2

My image choice is this wonderful New Release from Jellypark “Romantic Meal for 2”. I colored my base with the lightest colors in my palette –

champagne Y15, Champagne glasses C0, wine bucket W3, ice BG10, wine bottle V01, YG63 and YR21, woman’s dress R24, hair YR24, all skin E21

Chairs C5, Man’s shirt B13, pants BG 93, hair and shoes E35 tablecloth B00, vase E08, roses R22, leaves YG03,

Step 3

My next step is to decide where my light source is coming from. I am thinking of this image as though I am taking a photo of it, so my light will be coming from center (imagine a flash) and my darker areas will be the outsides

I also take into account that the areas closest to the front of image will be lighter than those further away, i.e. the man’s right arm will be lighter than the left because of its position in the image, also it will be a bit darker when it comes out from behind the vase.

Step 4

Now I will go in with my DARKEST color and highlight those areas that will be darkest. Darkest colors used are (following order listed above) C7, B18, BG99, E49(which was just refilled and dropped ink on man’s shoe), B04, E18, R89, YG63, YR23, C02, W6, BG11, V06, YG67, YR24, R39 and E23 for skin.

I also added my middle color for the hair – E57 Man and E39 woman. For hair, I always like to go light, medium, dark in my coloring.

Step 5

Now I am ready to blend my colors. It may take a few tries to do this, especially because I let everything dry first for purposes of this tutorial. It’s much easier to blend alcohol markers when your ink is still wet. So, to blend, I come in with my medium color and work til everything is blended – this may mean going back to darkest and lightest colors as well. And for the hair, I add my darkest color last, E49 for the man and E59 for the woman. Medium tones that I used are none for chairs, only used C5, & C7, B15, BG96, E57 (shoes), B02, E09, R29, just 2 colors for leaves, Y17, just 2

colors for glasses, ice and parts of wine bottle, V04 added on label, bucket uses W6 for rim, W5, W4, W3, R29. Last, I go back and add a floor or something to ground the image so it doesn’t look like they are floating in the middle of nowhere – I used E33 and E31 for the floor here. I also add a highlight around the rest of the image to draw it out – on this one I chose R00 and R000 – it’s very subtle, but makes the image POP a bit. And voila – your 1 dimensional coloring now looks 3D!

Step 6

Here you can see the sideby-side comparison – pretty big difference, huh? Hope you enjoyed this little tutorial and found it helpful and easy to follow.
