This shocking numerical statistic formed the basis of my idea for a fashion shoot which warns of how damaging fast fashion is to the environment, and suggests that recycling and re-using clothes is a more sustainable alternative. Taking inspiration from the August 2010 editorial shoot in Vogue Italia which interprets a major oil crisis and explores the power of nature over humanity, the concept of my shot is to challenge the throw-away attitudes of consumers by showing them the consequences of their actions. The location of the shoot would be a landfill site, and models would be styled to wear old clothes which blend into the surrounding location. The style of the shoot would very high-fashion to juxtapose the squalid location, making people consider where the 900,000 garments they throw-away each year end up. By distancing the consumer from the glamour and frivolousness of fashion and showing them the reality of fast fashion I hope that they will see that we must take responsibility for our clothes and our actions. Recycling fashion is a better way forward, as we cannot continue to put so much strain on the environment.
