INTSABA
Urban design studio project located in Swaziland, Africa. This was a team project that involved the class to design an orphan village and a resort. The project is for an organization named SOHO (Saving Orphans through Healthcare Operations). The goal of the project is to design a children’s village for the orphans and the vulnerable children. The resort concept is the provide a place for tourist to visit. The money from the resort is supposed to help provide income for the village. After the design of the village it was decided that the village will be named “INTSABA” meaning “a mountian home.”
eSwatini is a mountainous 6,704 sq miles land-locked developing country in southeastern Africa bordered by Mozambique in the north east and surrounded by South Africa. The kingdom is known for it’s natural beauty, reserves and festivals highlighting their culture. It is one of the smallest countries in Africa and is the last absolute monarchy in Africa ruled jointly by King Mswati III and Queen Mother Ntfombi Tfwala. The country has about 1.3 million people with the population growth rate of 1.2%. The average age of the youth population is 20.5 years and people aged 14 years or younger constituting 37.5% of the country’s total population. The official languages are siSwati and English and their religion is a mixture with Christianity and ancestral worship. The country’s main local trading partner is South Africa; The majority of the country’s employment is provided by its agricultural and manufacturing sectors. Tourism on the other hand is also very popular in eSwatini and the people love the idea of having tourists coming to their country, giving them the opportunity to practice their hospitality tradition and show case their beautiful country.
How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of those who bring good news, who proclaim peace, who bring good tidings, who proclaim salvation, who say to Zion, “your God reigns!”
The INTSABA
The Van Staden’s made sure that when you are own their property you would experience God’s creation in all its form. Their hope was that their visitors would be blessed when they are at their home. The family is now looking forward to seeing their home turn into a home for children in need, as a dwelling and a gateway to enjoy God’s creation. Wynand’s only hope and prayer when he comes back is to see more cultivation of the land and turned into a “beacon of light.”The Instaba not only needs to be cultivated, but kept for the glory of God.
Some of the family’s greatest memory on the Intsaba included sabbath exploring trips on the land and the times spent with God as Psalm 121 says, “they lift their eyes to the Lord and there came to their help.” Wynand’s family has seen the Intsaba turn from a marijuana farm to a land that displays God’s great creation.
A Home To Build
Building Swazi Culture
eSwatini has a rich culture that has been preserved for over 400 years. The current building and living culture is greatly informed by the traditions that are passed down from generation to generation. On the INTSABA, the designs are intentionally inspired by all the good aspects of the culture. The design of the village specifically will inform the living culture of Swazis to the children. It will be like a sanctuary for the children that will be based on the eSwatini culture for them to grow into godly and upstanding eSwatini citizens.
Built by Swazis for Swazis
A crucial aspect of the design will be based on houses that can be build and maintained by the local people. The buildings should be able to provide the locals with opportunities for employment and growth as well as be sustainable for them.
Designed for Community Life
Life in eSwatini is revolves around the community. The houses are mostly made for sleeping while people spend majority of their time outdoors. The houses will beautifully reflect this lifestyle.
Function in Joy
Due to the beautiful crafts that is so popular in their culture, the beauty of the traditional Swazi buildings functioned to improve the aesthetics of their homes while also provide them with all the adequate necessities for living a joyful life in the Swazi climate.
The site has a lot of materials that can be used for building. These natural materials speak to the Swazi culture which is readily available and have been used for the Swazis for a long time.
Working with local climate WIth the blend of tradtitional and contemporary Swazi builidng materials and techniques, we can create buildings that are optimum for the local weather.
