W E LCO M E TO O U R 35TH ANNIVERSARY GALA! Dear Friends, Thank you for joining us for The Academy’s 35th Anniversary Gala, a celebration of 35 years of extraordinary artistic work and the supporters who make it possible. As we celebrate this milestone anniversary, we reflect on the legacy left by the 1,400plus young artists who have made this community “home” Photo by Thomas Mohr since 1981. These students— dancers, writers, filmmakers, instrumentalists, animators, singers, visual artists, composers, and actors—have proven over and over again that the arts matter. Their work has the power to inspire, to unify, to broaden perspective, to heal, to give voice, to mobilize, and to bring joy, and we are proud to share some of that work with you tonight. For decades, Academy students have been transformed by a unique educational program and unparallelled culture that, together, create the conditions necessary for young artists to thrive, to succeed in a breathtaking variety of careers inside the arts and beyond, and to lead rich, deeply meaningful lives. None of this would be possible without our friends, supporters, advocates, and allies. Tonight we specifically thank Janet Davies, the recipient of our inaugural Leadership and Legacy award; Emily Barr and Scott Kane and Kelly and Michael Finnerty, our Gala Co-Chairs; the Gala Host Committee; our Board of Trustees; our patrons and sponsors; our Gala volunteers; our tireless faculty and staff; our students and their families; and you, our guests. On behalf of the entire Academy community, I thank you for your extraordinary commitment. Enjoy the evening!

This work is one of a series of paintings in which I explored a feminist icon within the patriarchal driven Catholic church. I drew my inspiration from visiting the San Xavier mission church in Tucson, Arizona. I painted the interiors, focusing on the icon sculptures that decorated the church. I often focus on ideas of female identity in my art by bringing attention to the feminine form without objectification, and often seek inspiration in the long history of women painters.

Because she sings the song of nothingness, And bends down to the edge of river clear, She gently cups her hand, with lovingness, The quiet mumble of her song you hear. She brings a lucid handful to her lips, Slick, frosty water passes through her teeth, The young and blonde, with a swish in her hips, Hair braided ‘bout her face in a pale wreath. The water dances underneath her hand, Her picture lost in ripples from her touch, She wonders how can they not understand, The clarity and coldness just as much. Her voice a light and effervescent tune, The river sparkles in the sun of June. La Planète (The Planet) Animation by Jackie Tang (Media Arts ‘17)

Over the last year, I have been exploring wood to use as a subject and a surface. I drew deconstructed kitchenware on wood veneer sheets, in varying sizes, to allude to stereotypes relating to a woman’s place in society. I used barcodes as a means of disrupting or confusing the original functions of the objects to create new ones because barcodes are used to identify and justify a product. By deconstructing familiar objects and reconstructing new ones within the drawing, I am redefining its purpose and taking away its ties to the stereotype of women belonging in a kitchen.
