HER MOM. HER HERO

Maura is running on Team ALS ONE in memory of her hero, her mom, Maryellen Standring, who lost her very brave battle with ALS in November of 2014, just 18 months after her diagnosis, and at just 67 years old.
SHE WAS THE EPITOME OF My mom was an amazing woman. She put her family and friends above anything. Her cooking and baking skills were hard to beat and she always had something warm and delicious coming out of the oven. There was always room for one more at that table in our home! She was the best grandmother, or "ME" as we called her. She did not miss a chance to be with her grandchildren. My mom was also a wonderful wife, daughter, sister, niece, aunt, cousin and friend.
Family
SINCE THAT MOMENT In September 2012, my mom tripped while walking on the jetties with my dad at Seagull Beach in Yarmouth, MA. From that day on she was never the same. Slowly, after many appointments, changes i n s p e e c h , d e c r e a s e d m o b i l i t y , a n d MARYELLEN endless tests did she receive the terrible STANDRING diagnosis in June of 2013. She had ALS. Our family has not been the same since that moment and less than 18 months later we all received the terrible news: my mom had passed.
NOTHING HAS BEEN THE SAME The wind beneath her wings.
FOREVER INSPIRED BY HER HERO
THE BEST THINGS IN LIFE DON'T HAVE PRICE TAGS To remind us about the things that truly mattered, my mom used to say:
"DON'T CRY WHEN YOU CAN BUY"
"NEVER AGAIN" I am very proud to be running the Boston Marathon for ALS ONE.
In 2004 when I crossed the finish line of my first marathon the first person I saw was my mom. "Never Again" were my first words. It was hot and a hard run. Sixteen years later I NEVER thought I would be running another marathon without my mom at the finish line but I know she'll be with me...

SIMPLE TASKS ARE THEIR MARATHONS. I am happy to be healthy and able to train and run 26.2 miles for such a great organization to help those who can't and to find a cure so others don't have to suffer.

The day she drove me to my first interview at MGH for my first nursing job. The excitement of calling her and telling her I was engaged and the endless laughs and great times we had planning me and Pat's special wedding day.
I would say though, that my best memory, and the one I miss the most, is
THE SOUND OF HER VOICE when I would walk into our home, Whether it was off the bus from school, home from a practice or walking in with my kids, she would always get off the phone or stop what she was doing to say "Hi Maura" or "Dave, Maura's here with the kids!". A warm smile and questions about the day was always waiting for sure! THE VIRTUAL RACE The virtual run this year will make things interesting. It is also giving me the opportunity to have some friends and family join me running the route. I will miss taking the last onto Boylston Street, looking forward to a fun exciting run.

I'm so grateful to be on team ALS ONE with my cousin, Beth Helenius. We ran on ALS ONE's Falmouth Road Race team together in 2016 and are excited to lace back up and help
