Jenks Public Schools Announces Plan For 2020-2021 School Year, Gives Parents Options By Kyle Salomon In a special meeting Monday, the Jenks Public Schools Board of Education listened and discussed a presentation of the “Return to Learn” plan for the 2020-2021 school year for the Jenks school district. The presentation was made by Jenks Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Stacey Butterfield, Assistant Superintendent Dr. Lisa Muller, Administrator Shan Glandon, Administrator Rose Pixley, Administrator Roger Wright, Administrator Dana Ezell, and Administrator Bonnie Rogers. The “Return to Learn” plan consists of three options parents of students at Jenks Public Schools will have to make by July 31. Once a decision is made, that student is locked into that plan for the entirety of the fall semester. If a parent wants to make a change, they must wait until the semester is complete. The first of the three plans is the “All At-School Learning” plan, which is designed for students in Pre-K through 12th grade. In this option the student will: -Remain enrolled in Jenks Public Schools -Attend school daily in a face-to-face classroom environment -Engage in a variety of learning experiences with teachers and peers -Continue to access educational technology supports -Continue to access guidance and counseling, media, and other student programs as needed The second of the three plans is the “All Virtual Learning Through Trojan Connect Program” plan, which is designed for students in Kindergarten through 12th grade. In this option students will: -Remain enrolled in Jenks Public Schools -Access learning activities via an online platform (Calvert Learning for Kindergarten through sixth grade and Edgenuity for seventh through 12th grade). -Have their progress monitored by a certified Jenks Public Schools teacher -Receive supplemental instructional support for coursework from a certified Jenks Public Schools teacher -Require at-home parental guidance and support during learning activities in grades Kindergarten through sixth grade -Access guidance and counseling services, media centers, and other student programs as needed -Receive technology device and internet access support as needed The third of the three plans is the “Blended Learning” plan, which is designed for students in seventh through 12th grade. In this option students will: -Remain enrolled in Jenks Public Schools -Attend school daily for a portion of the school day, while completing remaining courses via the Edgenuity online platform -Interact directly with teachers and peers -Engage in a variety of learning experiences -Be eligible to participate in school-sponsored activities and athletics -Access guidance and counseling services, media centers, and other student programs as needed -Receive technology device and internet access support as needed To sum it up, students in Pre-K, who are enrolled in Jenks Public Schools, must attend face-to-face school, students from Kindergarten through sixth grade have to choose between face-to-face school or virtual school and students from seventh through 12th grade can choose between face-to-face, virtual or a blended learning format. Any student in third grade or higher, who attends face-to-face school, must wear a mask at all times. Students in second grade or younger, who attend face-to-face school are not required to wear masks. Students of all ages, who ride the buses to school must wear a mask at all times. All faculty and staff at JPS are required to wear masks at all times. All the normal bus routes will run as usual once school begins. The 2020-2021 school year for Jenks Public Schools is scheduled to start Aug. 19 and that date has not changed. Parents and students must decide on how they prefer their child or children are taught this year by July 31. If the deadline is not met, the school district will move to its default mode, where the student will be required to attend face-to-face school. The JPS School Board also voted to authorize Dr. Butterfield to adjust instructional delivery between school/in-person and distance learning, as well as employee work schedules as necessary for COVID-19 during the 2020-2021 school year. Dr. Butterfield said in Monday’s meeting that these plans are subject to change, as the pandemic could change drastically prior to the beginning of school in mid-August.

This is an Oklahoma Department of Transportation project, in partnership with the City of Jenks. Project details are as follows: 111th Street from US Highway 75 to Elwood Avenue will be widened to three lanes with curb and gutter The 111th Street and Elwood Avenue intersection will have three lanes each direction (each having a left turn lane, a right turn lane and a middle lane Storm sewer to be constructed under the roadway and designed to accommodate future widening to an ultimate of 5-lanes The coal Creek Bridge will be widened to four lanes and includes a sidewalk on one side of the bridge and a trail on 111th Street that ties into the existing trail east of Elwood Avenue Construction is expected to be completed late 2021. Golfsuites Takes Over Flying Tee, Set To Bring Positive Changes

By Kyle Salomon The world of golf, fun and entertainment is changing in Jenks with GolfSuites replacing Flying Tee as the managing company for the Riverwalk Crossingbased location. GolfSuites officially came on board in the fall of 2019 and with a threepart transition plan that would take nine to 12 months to complete. The original plan was to debut earlier this summer, but the COVID19 pandemic had other ideas. The new plan is to complete the entire transition from Flying Tee to GolfSuites in the late spring or early summer of 2021. “We are excited about the next seven to nine months as we continue facility updates, management and food and beverage staffing, website revamp and rebranding of the venue,” said Scott McCurry, GolfSuites Vice President of Operations. Changes to the venue began taking place in early 2020, but as the three-phase transition progresses, changes will be ongoing until the venue is completed.

“We are building an entertainment venue that when Tulsan’s and visitors think play, eat, drink, party or fun they will #thinkSuite – GolfSuites – GolfSuites Tulsa,” McCallum said. The pandemic has also forced some operational changes with GolfSuites. Each suite goes through a full sanitation process when they switch over to another guest. There are additional hand sanitizer stations around the facility and each team member wears a mask. Wellness checks are also provided other suggested guidelines are continuing to be followed daily. There will be live music incorporated on the two stages at the facility and bigger concerts on the range. “We look forward to serving our community and making an impact on all who come to experience what we, GolfSuites Tulsa, have to offer,” said Karson Calvert, GolfSuites Tulsa Operations Manager. “At GolfSuites Tulsa, we want to build relationships by creating unforgettable experiences as we do this by delivering fun with passion.” More about GolfSuites:

“We will be transforming our building and our experience through multiple phases, from basic repairs and improvements to complete layout renovations,” said Dionicia McCallum, GolfSuites Director of Marketing. “We are asking everyone for their patience, as construction areas popup around the venue. We hope Tulsan’s will join us often to be a part of the excitement that is building as Phase 1 through 3 take place to create a whole new experience for our guests. Our promise to our guests is to deliver fun with passion.” Here are the three phases for the GolfSuites transition: Phase 1: Brand new menu with local partners Repainting of interior and second and thirdfloor tee lines Remodel and upgrade both event meeting rooms Remove the old thirdfloor suites to make way for an upgraded VIP suite lounge Internal signage changing and rebranding visuals with external signage change coming soon New and repaired televisions along with digital posters throughout the venue All new training manuals based around delivering fun with passion New uniforms for all team partners All new golf and game technology installation, powered by Toptracer Range Phase 2: Begin to remodel lobby area to include a full retail shop Change of external signage on building Remodel of 19th Hole area (firstfloor patio) Repaint firstfloor tee line and exterior of building New website and social media platforms Addition of exterior stage in 19th Hole area Live concert series begins Phase 3: VIP suite lounge construction commences Range light show installation Installation of new range turf New tee line and suite furniture Firstfloor restaurant and sports bar remodel New interior furniture “GolfSuites is a great company,” McCallum said. “We are excited. The goal is to grow from here. We have made a lot of changes behind the scenes and are now beginning to tackle the guest facing changes. A most recent and exciting change for our guests is our new technology. Toptracer Range provides our guest an easier check in process, including an app that allows them to track stats in Tulsa or at any of our future GolfSuites locations. With its high definition virtual visuals and additional family friendly games our new technology offers a fun, engaging, techdriven experience that appeals to seasoned players, range rivals, friends, family members, and even firsttime golfers.” While forming the GolfSuites Tulsa team, a new assistant golf instructor has been added to the staff. The new instructor is heading up Suite Summer Kids Camp, individual and group lessons along with league play and “coming soon” annual GolfSuites tournaments wrapped around some of the PGA Tour’s biggest tournaments of the year.

Popular Restaurant Mondo’s Eyes Jenks Location

By Kyle Salomon

Since 1969 when Italian restaurants are mentioned in the Tulsa area, it is rare “Mondo’s” is not among those named. For more than five decades, Mondo’s Italiano Ristorante has served delicious Italian food, but its restaurants throughout the years have been located in the midtown area of Tulsa. Mondo’s only current location resides at 3410 S. Peoria Ave. in the popular Brookside area. However, that could change soon. Jenks has emerged as a frontrunner to land the next Mondo’s restaurant. The location being considered is on the northwest corner of Riverfront Drive and B Street just before you enter the Riverwalk Crossing area. Mondo’s is owned and operated by the Aloisio family. Lou and his son Rob are the co-owners, while Rob’s brothers Michael and Christo help run the family business as well. Rob Aloisio said his family has always liked the Jenks community. “My kids grew up playing in the Jenks (youth) baseball league,” Aloisio said. “Every time I drove through Main Street Jenks, it had a hometown feeling of just a great community.” Aloisio said based on their current restaurant on Brookside, a Jenks location would be geographically perfect. “We really like the accessibility with the Creek Turnpike coming over from south Tulsa,” Aloisio said. “You could be on 101st and Memorial and jump on the Creek Turnpike and be in Jenks within minutes. Also, you have the Highway 75 corridor. Logistically, it could not be a better fit. When we saw that property for sale, I thought it was a prime piece of land and a great opportunity.” There are concerns however, among the Jenks citizens that live in the houses near that property, that there will be a lot of noise coming from the new Mondo’s restaurant. Aloisio said he understands the Jenks residents’ concerns.

“We are a family restaurant,” Aloisio said. “We love to have families and friends come in and eat. I think Mondo’s would be a great fit for the Jenks community.” Jenks City Council recently approved a pre-plat in a City Council Meeting on the land Mondo’s is interested in acquiring. City Council is requiring Mondo’s to build a wall between the restaurant and the nearby homes to alleviate any sound issues. During Tuesday’s meeting, one city council member raised a number of concerns about the potential new restaurant, but another city council member brought to everyone’s attention that if the Jenks City Council continues to add more restrictions to the Mondo’s group, the group may decide to look elsewhere to build their new location. If the Mondo’s ownership group decides they want to purchase the land to build their new location, the Jenks City Council will have final say on the final plat approval before construction can be started. “We only seat 85 people in our current location,” Aloisio said. “Every Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights, I am having to turn away 30 to 40 reservations per night because we can’t accommodate them. We are busting at the seams. We are capped where we are.” Aloisio said the COVID-19 pandemic has been a little bit of a scare for the Mondo’s group, but they are still ready to roll with a new location. “I don’t want to get into a $2 million project of buying land and building a restaurant and not be able to open our doors,” Aloisio said. “If Mondo’s does come to Jenks, we are projecting around $4.2 to $4.5 million in sales annually, which would bring a lot of sales tax revenue to the City of Jenks.”

Jenks Police Officers Attend Tulsa Police Sgt. Funeral A group of Jenks Police Officers attended the funeral and procession July 9 of Tulsa Police Sgt. Craig Johnson, who was tragically killed in the line of duty June 29. In a post on their Facebook page, the Jenks Police Department said, "We grieve with Sgt. Johnson's family (immediate family and TPD family) today and will stand beside them as they lay Sgt. Johnson to rest. Godspeed, Brother. We shall hold the line from here."
