Cars are like a “second home,an extention of oneself. In this protected environment, people sleep and eat. However, any threats that occur can be territorial. These threats can escalate quickly into vengeful driving and may endanger their lives and others. 2

CALIBRATE Evaluate the situation. You might be at fault. Remember they are human too. Road ragers don’t see the offender as a person. Has any driver that cut you off looked back to apologize after you honked and flipped them off? Has losing your temper at another driver ever made you any less late in getting to class? No. Ignore the raging
driver. Avoid driving slow in passing lanes on the left-hand side of the road. If you allow for extra driving time you’ll be less likely speeding to get to your next destination.
COOL!
CHILL Things are not as they should be so the need to be anxious may with you. Don’t let anyone steal your peace.
Convince yourself to forgive, let go in order to get to your destination.12
CHUCKLE Use humor to deflect the rage. Smile back at them. “Immediately make loud funny noises or wailing, or if you prefer, burst out singing in a loud voice,” says Dr. Leon James, professor of Psychology at the University of Hawaii.
Think gracious thoughts, like honeycomb, sweet to the soul and healing for the body. Tune in soothing music. The last thing you want is a bass that beats to the rhythm of your heartbeat. Avoid eye contact with the other driver. Just think, they’re not worth your beautiful gaze. Another option is spraying aromatherapy in front of you to be your own personal road rage reducer. Place pictures of family members or loved ones in plain site. Take in deep breaths and keep your focus on the road. Your destination and destiny await.
ROUTEZINE
“The heavy metal of a car is a safe haven. Road ragers don’t think about the consequences or even about other people on the road as real people with real families.”
