FOX CHASE CANCER CENTER HEALING LANDSCAPE Public Lands Design Studio
year 3 | fall 2017
Professors Baldev Lamba & Carter VanDyke Location Philadelphia, PA Project size 4 acres Program healing garden design | native pollinator gardens | sensory gardens Challenges • lack of wheelchair accessible entrances • lack of destinations and defined spaces • challenging courtyard topography
Description Fox Chase Cancer Center’s mission of healing and patient well-being was interpreted through this healing landscape design. The 4 acre courtyard presented challenges such as steep topography, existing views into patient rooms, and a lack of wheelchair accessibility. The overall concept design for the courtyard addressed these challenges while creating a landscape that highlights the native plant communities of southeastern Pennsylvania.
JENNA OTTO | PORTFOLIO | FOX CHASE CANCER CENTER
Gathering Green As patients and staff enter the courtyard they are greeted by a view of the gathering green, the woodland, and the meadow garden which immediately presents a sense of calm and healing. This space was designed for programmed use such as hospital events and yoga classes as well as for passive use such as picnics and providing visual access to the expanse of the courtyard.

Garden Seating A central gathering space will provide views of all of the courtyard activities.
Sensory Garden The sensory garden includes the sound of moving water, has fragrant plants and textured local stone seating and will contribute to a sense of overall wellbeing 8
An Accessible Space This view can be seen from the infusion room hallway and allows patients and staff the opportunity to enjoy the experience of the outdoors even when going outside is not possible. This accessible bridge provides access where currently there is none. A stormwater basin has been included to contribute to the environment of health and wellness at Fox Chase.

PLEASANT HILL PARK | WETLAND RESTORATION Wetland Design Studio year 2 | spring 2017 Professor
Tracy Cohen
Location Philadelphia, PA Project size 30 acres Program wetland restoration | stormwater management | dynamic coastal design Challenges • parking lot circulation • historic fishing pond algae and circulation problems • disconnect from tidal system
Description Pleasant Hill Park is located in the Torresdale Neighborhood along the Delaware River in the City of Philadelphia. The park is known for it’s historic fishing ponds which once served as a fish hatchery. Today there is an active fishing program for children. The park also features one of three public boat ramps in Philadelphia which causes traffic build up in the summer months and the need for parking.
Project Goals • • • •
improve pedestrian and vehicular circulation manage stormwater through green infrastructure create opportunities to access the river provide habitat for wildlife in ponds and wetlands

Living shorelines can be created in areas where wave action creates a high energy environment through the use of a breakwater. In order for it to be considered a living shoreline rocks or hard material can be used in conjunction with shellfish and wetland plant material.

Pond Improvements Stepped pond-side seating will provide an opportunity to get closer to the water and have been curved to redefine the ponds for a more natural appearance. Floating wetlands naturally filter the water, which will control summer algae blooms while providing shade and shelter for the fish.

Perceived Safety in Urban Woodlands The idea of urban woodlands and perceived safety was studied by Herbert W. Shroeder and L.M Anderson in 1983. According to their research, a majority of people found a dense woodland to be both aesthetically appealing and unsafe while an open landscape such as an athletic field is safe yet visually unappealing. In order to create a balance between safety, aesthetics, and a performing landscape the following considerations can be made when creating a designed woodland space. • • • •
20
maintain long views and lines of sight limit dense vegetation between knee and eye elevations activate spaces within woodland areas with programming provide multiple entry and exit points throughout

Vanda Orchid Display To plan for the hanging Vanda Orchid Display, I took measurements using a laser measuring tool to determine the length of wire and number of orchids to be purchased. I created these drawings to communicate the hanging instructions. The Photoshop rendering to the right was used to communicate the concept of the design. Construction Diagram

Chrysanthemum Festival Archway 9'
6 TRAYS ACROSS WIDTH (66")
To visualize and plan for a Chrysanthemum archway, I created a digital 3D model. The model allowed us to explore details such as height, width and the number of 5'-6" Chrysanthemums that production would need to grow in order to cover the entire arch. The measurements from4'-1/2" the model were also used by the carpenter and metal shops to create a full scale mock up in the conservatory.
