Trails galore!

JUST FOR FUN Things to do New to the San Luis Valley, people usually are amazed at the scenery and the clear skies. Next comes the number of things to do. Just for fun, here are some suggestions: • Grab an old sled and take a few runs down one of the nation’s highest sand Dunes at the Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve. Do the same with a pair of rock skis. • Wade in Medano Creek and feel the surging waters; squish some sand between your toes. • Visit any one of the area’s geothermally heated spas and soak away tensions or just have some water fun. • Hike Del Norte’s growing trails system and view the Valley from the top of Lookout “D” Mountain. • Ride the rails from Alamosa to La Veta or Antonito, then take the narrow gauge to New Mexico.
• Ride the rail bus from South Fork to Wason. • Visit the area’s museums. Each has a different theme and variety of displays. • Watch the bats fly from the old Orient Mine above Villa Grove. • Watch community softball and soccer teams play. • Join an area arts council, veterans organization or fraternal lodge. • Take in a performance at the Creede Repertory Theatre. • Visit a guest ranch • Drive the Bachelor Loop above Creede and see how the miners lived and worked during the Gold Rush days. • Haidakhandi Universal Ashran, 2349 Camino Baca Grande, Crestone, 256-4108. • Shumei International Institute, 3000 E. Dreamway, Crestone. Each of these activities is sure to yield more ideas for fun, community involvement and education.
