Celebrating Menswear By Rosaly Pagan

Fashion is universal; It fits every person in the world and is not exclusive to gender. This issue brings a greater focus on menswear than any other previous issue. We celebrate this focus by featuring a male student from the department for the first time ever. Joseph Tadiello was a great person to work with and a great fit for this spread. This spread is one of my favorites because we had a personal photo shoot that really tied into the interview. We hope you enjoy learning about Joe as well as the amazing articles students contributed. Spring 2015 brings out creative collaborations, inspiration from movies, and classic trends that are worth your wild. Dive into the issue and get lost in the fashion universe.

Our alum Mercyhurst alumni, Christina Pollock, gives us the inside on Dick’s Sporting Goods’ collaboration project with country singer Carrie Underwood for a new line called CALIA. As the product manager, Pollack has to consider numerous factors such as demographics, competing products, and how well the product options fit with the company.

What were the initial phases of CALIA? CP: “While I was on an overseas trip to Asia with my Dick’s Sporting Goods product development team, we noticed that there was a major feminine lifestyle trend emerging that didn’t quite fit into the status quo of athletic brands in the marketplace.” When does the line launch and what products should we expect to see? CP: “The official launch is on March 5, 2015 and will be carried exclusively at Dick’s Sporting Goods stores and online. This line includes apparel and accessories such as scarves, headbands, mats, water bottles, stretching straps, and bags. What makes CALIA different than other athletic brands in the marketplace? CP: “CALIA comes from the Greek word Kalos, meaning beauty. CALIA is a lifestyle athletic apparel line that is targeted for the modern woman who needs her wardrobe to function for all aspects of her day. The aesthetic of the line includes feminine details like ruching and rose gold trims, and all of the pieces are mix and match for versatility. A large portion of the line incorporates ‘wearable art’ prints that are originals and won’t be found anywhere else in the market. Whether she is at a barre class, grabbing coffee with friends, or picking her kids up from school, the CALIA customer can layer her look with 3rd layer pieces like lightweight sweaters. Since the line incorporates technologies like moisture management and anti-odor, this woman on the go can be comfortable throughout her busy day. The pieces in the line range from $30-$85.”

What’s it like partnering with Carrie Underwood? CP: “Partnering with Carrie Underwood for CALIA has been nothing short of a dream! One of Carrie’s biggest passions is fitness and a healthy lifestyle, so CALIA was the perfect brand for her to get behind because she truly lives the brand’s mission statement. Carrie wants to motivate and encourage women of all ages and sizes to be their best self and to stay the path!”

Necklace Organizer

Ever get sick of trying to sort through clumps of necklaces to figure out which one to wear? Or tired of forgetting you own half the jewelry you do because it is in a box and you can’t see it? Why not display your jewelry like the art that it is! This is also a great way of filling up empty space on those awful white dorm/apartment walls, and it looks pretty!

What you need A piece of wood (You can buy this at Lowes or Home Depot in the scrap bins, or you could even find a really cool piece of driftwood at Presque Isle!) Paint or stain Some pretty knobs (I got mine at Hobby Lobby) A drill Picture hangers and nails

How to make it

1 2 3 4 5 6 5.

First clean off your piece of wood. You may also want to lightly sand it, depending on the texture. Next, paint it any color or stain it. If you go the staining route, make sure you wear gloves and apply with a sponge or old rag. Then allow it to dry. Next, you’ll want to measure out where you want your knobs to be placed and mark this with a pencil. Then, drill through the wood where you’ve marked. Add your knobs. On the back of the wood, nail in picture hangers and then hang it on the wall.

Not your typical guy

Joseph Tadiello is not your typical 23 year old Canadian. He’s a senior at Mercyhurst University, plays for the university’s club hockey team, and is graduating as a fashion business contract major. Yes, I said fashion! Rosaly Pagan sits down with Joe and gives us the inside scoop about his life after college and his quirky habits that will make you say “Wow I never thought of that.”

o

iell d a T h Josep

So how/when did you know you wanted to study fashion? Well at first I was finance major— Sorry, did you just say finance?! Yeah. I really like numbers, it makes sense to me. But one day I was just like I don’t want to sit behind a desk my whole life. I want to do something that involves more than that. So around the time I was like 19, I really got into fashion. What part of fashion most interests you? Because I am into numbers, I really like the buying aspect of it. I can still work with numbers but at the same time go out and look for things. Knowing how to buy would also benefit me in the long run when I open my own store. You want your own store?! That’s awesome. Where would you consider locating it? Probably in Toronto, Canada. It’s very fashion driven.

7.

Is that where you’re planning to go after you graduate? Yes, I think I am going to start working in a small retail business in the area and try to learn as much as I can. I want to know what it takes to own a business. What would you sell in your store? A mix of street wear and unique finds that you wouldn’t be able to buy anywhere else. I want the apparel to have an overall British style. Is that how you would describe your own personal style? For sure. My style is heavily influenced by street wear. Like the pants I have on right now are joggers that I bought from Italy, they are my favorite. From Italy? That’s insane. Okay so I can sense that you’re very particular about your clothes. If you were to pick five of your favorite things from your wardrobe, what would they be? Wow I’ve never thought about that before…Okay 1. These joggers 2. Denim jacket from Nudie 3. Jeans 4. Zanarobe joggers 5. My Eastland leather boots

I have to be honest; I am unfamiliar with some of those brands. Where do you shop? Well I am a big online shopper. I tend to shop at retailers that domestically manufacture their apparel, so in the United States, I shop at Sons of Oden, Fear of God, and Union Made Goods which are all based in LA. I love that! This means you are a fan of quality. Are there any weird things/habits you have that concern your clothing? Actually yeah there are a couple things. When it comes to my jeans, I usually like to wear them like joggers so I fold them in particular way to mimic that style. When it comes to the care of my clothing, I do not dry anything. You should see my room, I hang dry everything so my clothes are everywhere. I even hang my cotton t-shirts! That is so funny! I can definitely learn from you. Now, lastly! Do you have a quirky belief you follow? In fashion? Yes. I feel like the more outrageous your outfit is the more fashionable you are. You know you accomplish that when someone says, “WHAT IN THE...?!”

Would You Rock a Pantsuit? The results are in. Emma Watson is rocking one on the streets, Emma Stone and Lorde on the red carpet and you said in a survey that you would strut your stuff in a pantsuit too!

Who’s Wearing the Pants?

By Katy Huff

Yes No

Time to suit up, ladies! The pantsuit is making a new and improved comeback soon to win over our hearts and wallets. Rompers, jumpsuits and overalls can now welcome the pantsuit in their midst of bifurcated fashions that seem to not be letting up anytime soon. For a trend that was once considered outdated political attire, the pantsuit has walked a great stretch to make it to the runways. Recently, menswear has slowly and steadily been creeping its way to the hottest trends of the year, but when Emma Stone ditched the dress and rocked a daring Lanvin pantsuit at the 2015 Golden Globe Awards, the bar was officially raised to the next level. UN Women Global Goodwill Ambassador, Emma Watson, is notably a pantsuit fan and certainly willing to speak up and defend equal rights for women. Watson has been seen wearing pantsuits at numerous events and is no stranger to adopting fashion forward looks before they hit the masses. Pantsuits are even overreaching into 2015 Prom Trends with designers like Jovani and Alyce featuring many pantsuit varieties in this year’s lines. High school girls will now have the option to stick with the traditional prom dress style or move forward with the times and strut their stuff in a statement piece pantsuit that will have people talking and heads turnings all night long. 10.

Aries: As a daring free spirit, you

are a natural competitor. Your energy and confidence can be greatly reflected in your style. This season, show your confidence through trends. Head to toe white is in and the rules state it’s not about when to wear it; it’s how you wear it. Now that’s a challenge you’re ready to conquer!

Taurus: You are very practical and

purposeful. When it comes to fashion, you are willing to spend the extra bucks to look good. Your classy efforts can lead others to assume that you prefer quality over quantity. This spring, try to branch out by wearing more skirts. Look for colorful, artistic prints as well as pastel colors that would complement your earth sign. Also don’t be afraid to try different styles of skirts. The midi is classic and would suit your rockin’ body.

Gemini: You are always on the go and

love being free to move around. Your adventurous attitude goes along with your trendy and edgy style. You would be the perfect contender to try a sporty look this spring. Have you ever considered joggers? While this trend isn’t exactly new for 2015, this can be new for your wardrobe. They come in prints and solid colors that can match your edgy persona. Pair them with sneakers and a leather jacket and you will be ready to go.

Fashion H Leo: You’re passionate, dramatic, and rightfully

confident. These qualities make you believe that your image is powerful. With this, you always want to look good as well as making your style personal. Take advantage of your personal style and revamp your wardrobe this spring. Your powerful vibe would be great for the blue and white color trend. Color trends are ideal because of the flexibility you have to make it your own. Try mixing it with layers and textures and your image will stand out.

Cancer: Feminine. Romantic.

You are the ideal woman who is often well dressed. You try to keep up with the trends and stay fashion forward. This spring, gingham is the answer. Gingham is perfect because of its delicate, trendy vibe. You can find this trend on dresses and even two-piece outfits. You would especially love it in blue, orange, and even red. 13.

Virgo: Chic perfectly describes your fashion

taste. You are very sophisticated as well as modest. You are also very keen on how people perceive you. And what better way to show that off than in fashion? This spring take a leap of faith. Yes you may already wear dresses but do not be afraid to show a little skin. Ruffles are in and so are off the shoulder seam lines. Pair both these trends in prints and light textures. No one will second-guess your charming personality.

Libra: Balance is key in your life. You strive for harmony while being compassionate and elegant. Some might even suggest that you are the most tasteful in fashion of all signs. You’re in luck because one of the most traditional concepts is on trend: black and white. You may be more allured to stripes because of the contrasting colors as well as the overall balance. Show this trend off with blouses, jackets, or both!

Scorpio: You’re sexy and you know it.

You are magnetic and it is hard to not be attracted to your aura. Your powerful and sensual nature is perfect for this spring. Since you are always up for the hottest trends and looks, be fierce in palm prints. This print screams spring and allure. Wear it with anything you desire: pants, skirts, tops, and jackets. Bonus: if you add a pop color with red to the ensemble, you will turn multiple heads and ignite your confidence.

Horoscopes

Sagittarius:

The glass is always full for you and your positivity is contagious to everyone around you. You’re humorous and usually the life of the party. This means that you can be very eclectic when it comes to your style. Street style can be very inspirational for your wardrobe this spring. One of the most popular styles includes the iconic jumpsuit. Have fun and try this style with the trendy bib top neckline.

By Rosaly Pagan

Capricorn: You take charge of everything in

your life and control your actions. Your style is routinely professional and sophisticated. You do not try too hard and you are confident enough to wear tight clothing and show a little skin while still looking classy. This spring, combine trends that can appeal to your style and mood. Big printed florals are eye catching this year (ground breaking, right?) and so are shirtdresses. Rock the print while wearing the classic shirtdress with double high slits. Trendy with a touch of class!

Aquarius:

Fab-u-lous! You’re a natural intellect who dazzles. Your easygoing attitude makes you incredibly friendly and eccentric. You always look stunning but you tend to stick to the same look. This spring can be your chance to branch out. Consider trying fringe on a skirt or a lightweight sweater. The movement of fringe is ideal for your unconventional yet original taste.

Pisces:

You are a dreamer and a free spirit. Your humor and overactive imagination can be greatly seen in the clothes you wear. This spring, try a new look that is innovative, modern, and bohemian. The look? The apron skirt! This trend is great for layering this season and gives off a street style/vintage vibe. As a person who goes with the flow, this trend goes with your spirit. 14.

I s n o s Les d e n r a e L

At TeenVogue Fashion University By Maggie McGoldrick

For the past two years, I have been lucky enough to find myself among hundreds of well-dressed 16-24 year olds at Teen Vogue’s annual Fashion University program held in Midtown Manhattan, where industry VIPs such as Grace Coddington, Christian Siriano, and Amy Astley dropped their knowledge on all of us. Competition for seats into this weekend seminar was fierce. The first year I applied over 2600 applications were submitted and only 500 people were accepted. Once accepted, girls and guys from all over the world rushed online to secure their seminars as if their careers depended on it. And after everything I have learned these past two years, maybe our careers did depend on it. From working in retail since I was 16, to interning with Rue21 Corporate, to attending these seminars, here are the top three lessons I learned from the best in the business.

Always, Always have a good attitude because you are always being watched The first year I attended I got to meet and sit in on a seminar with Grace Coddington, the creative director of Vogue. Most of the speakers start off with their life in the industry and how they got there, projects or events that they are currently working on, and then open the discussion up to questions from the audience. One of the first questions that was asked by a student to Coddington was pertaining to ungrateful interns. Coddington stated, “Interns think that they are there just to watch. No, we put you to work. We are watching them at all times. It’s an attitude we are looking for.” I learned from Coddington that at internships people are always watching you, they are looking at your body language, your attitude, anything to judge if you would be fit for the job or not. You have to learn to never say no, always do your job well, and think ahead. “When I see someone who is a force of darkness in the world I don’t want to be around them because life is already too hard,” Amy Astley, director of Teen Vogue said.

2.

Take the opportunity to slow down Andrew Bevan, Teen Vogue’s Style Director, was one of my favorite people to meet and talk to. During his seminar one of the biggest messages that I got from him was to not rush into this industry. “Take advantage of the fact that you are still a kid, that you have free time, and go and live your life,” Bevan said. He told all of the students to be inspired by being a kid, and to take a moment to stop and spend time just being a college student. “The fashion industry will always be there, but your childhood won’t,” stated Bevan.

Don’t limit yourself The fashion industry is constantly changing, and evolving with any situation that comes along is crucial. The importance of interning is always stressed each year. However, interning is supposed to be like a trial period, allowing you to figure out if you prefer styling over design or photography over journalism. I had the pleasure to talk with Sheena Smith the accessories director of Teen Vogue about what her opinion was. She stated, “This is a good time in your life to explore those other opportunities that you won’t get a chance to do when all of the sudden you are in an office everyday.” Elaine Welteroth, Teen Vogue’s beauty director, also added, “One of the most valuable internship experiences I had, was at an internship I did not enjoy because it taught me everything I don’t want in my job. It was in advertising. I was so thankful that I did it before I was out in the real world.” 16.

Everything Lauren Conrad has a

a l l e r e d n i c y e n s i D n o i t c e l Col by Shelby Kirkland

OMG! Human Pinterest board Lauren Conrad is expanding her hugely successful design empire to include a very special collection for her LC Lauren Conrad for Kohl’s—and it couldn’t be more in line with her signature aesthetic. Yes, this means a Cinderella inspired line of gorgeousness. Think tulle skirts, organza cocktail dresses and everything else in between, even a Bibbidi Bobbidi Boo gold foiled t-shirt (swoon). Soft blues and pretty pink hues are scattered throughout the entire collection, making sure every girl feels like a real life princess, or just like Lauren Conrad! The collection is in Kohl’s stores and online now, just in time for Disney’s forthcoming live-action Cinderella film, which stars Lily James from Downton Abbey as Cinderella. The film debuts March 13, and is sure to be a major hit. Another company getting into the Cinderella mood is Mac Cosmetics. They released a limited edition makeup line with some breathtaking colors including soft nudes, champagnes, pinks and even a dark plum called “evil stepmother.” I’d have to say these collections are the dreamiest; most Cinderella-like styles and designs this side of the royal kingdom!

Adidas Comeback? by Annie Caminiti After a short hiatus in the late 2000s, Adidas is back in the limelight. Some of you may remember the Adidas low top samba sneakers with the classic three stripes. I myself owned a white pair with navy blue stripes in fourth grade. Trends do come back around, maybe not quite this quick all so often, but I find myself Googling “classic white adidas” frequently. Not much is stopping me from making the purchase, besides my poor college student bank account. Of course, Nike has always been on top for sportswear. Whether you like the feel of the sneakers, or you just want to stay on trend and look cool in Nike Roshes, (that you might never wear to the gym) Nike might just be the Apple of sportswear. But, Adidas has made a plunge deeper into fashion recently. There have been major collaborations with Big Sean, Rita Ora, Pharrell Williams, David Beckham, Stella McCartney, Jeremy Scott, Selena Gomez, and the most recent, Kanye West. Does this mean Adidas is more than just a sportswear brand now? Possibly. Maybe it has always been a lifestyle brand, but now fashion bloggers, models, and celebrities posing in this blast-from-the-past trend are making it more known that Adidas is a sharp fashion competitor. Even Urban Outfitters is carrying their merchandise. I’m happy to see the reimaging and new, modern approach from a classic brand gaining Adidas more popularity and recognition coming into 2015, but hopefully the vintage Adidas nylon tracksuit will be left in the ‘80s.
