Great Outdoors FUN IN THE
Jefferson County is home to a network of parks, wildlife and natural areas, historic and cultural sites, waterways and preserves all connected by trails throughout the County. Our County Parks system has over 19 miles of hiking trails, 35 miles of off- and on-road bicycle/pedestrian trails along the Glacial River Trail and Interurban Trail, and 224 miles of snowmobile trails. Bicycle routes have been designated on lightly traveled roads. A variety of outdoor activities from hiking, picnicking, bicycle riding, rustic camping, a large dog park, mountain biking, historic sites, Frisbee golf, boating, fishing, enjoying nature, cross country skiing, snow shoeing, and snowmobiling draws park users from throughout the County and beyond.
THE ROCK RIVER TRAIL
GLACIAL DRUMLIN STATE TRAIL
The 320-mile Rock River transects the County from North to South providing a “Route” through four of the County’s distinct communities. The river was designated a National Water Trail in 2013, by the U.S. Department of the Interior for its scenic and historic significance. Adventurers can paddle the length of the County while accessing the various shops, restaurants, and events along its river banks. For more information visit rockrivertrail.com
Developed in 1986, the trail starts in Cottage Grove (just east of Madison) and heads East for 52 miles where it connects with other trails in the Fox River Sanctuary in Waukesha. The trail is open to cyclists, walkers, joggers, roller bladers, and snowmobilers. A pass is required before using the trail and is valid on all other state trails. Annual fee: $25; daily fee: $5. No pass is required for hikers or children under 16. glacialdrumlin.com

GLACIAL RIVER BIKE TRAIL The 31.5-mile trail extends the full length (North to South) of Jefferson County, seamlessly into Rock and Dodge Counties, and is connected by an on-road portion of the Wild Goose Trail in Dodge County. A portion of the Glacial River Trail from downtown Fort Atkinson to the Jefferson/ Rock County line is set on a former rail bed and features a covered bridge. The majority provides an asphalt paved, separated grade trail. It is a mix of trail and on-road connections from Fort Atkinson. This spectacular attraction features an archway, bronze sculptures, rest areas and fountains - making it a relaxing and scenic adventure. www.enjoyjeffersoncounty.com

(CONT.)
Glacial Heritage Area Watertrails Paddling and water sports continue to be one of the most popular activities in the State of Wisconsin, and Jefferson County provides plenty of opportunity. With seven rivers and nine lakes to choose from, there is a little bit of adventure for everyone. The best way to plan a paddling trip would be to check out the Glacial Heritage Area Watertrail map. With 70 designated put-in and take-out sites to choose from, and trip descriptions for each one, planning a trip is a breeze. Check them out at jeffersoncountywi.gov/parks

Camrock Park
Located between Rockdale and Cambridge along the Koshkonong Creek, this 422-acre park has three areas with shelter facilities and play areas. It’s suitable for hiking, crosscountry skiing, and some of the best mountain biking in the area. The park can be reached via several access points with connector trails to all parks, access points located trailhead adjacent to Westside Park on Water Street in downtown Cambridge, County Hwy B, and Highland Drive in the Village of Rockdale.

Emma Carlin Trail
The trail is comprised of three loops, with difficult sections covering nearly 40 miles. The west end of the Green Loop has a particularly tough uphill grind. For a total challenge, take the formidable Connector Trail south to the John Muir Trail in Palmyra. 10

Jefferson County’s rich agricultural history is vibrantly seen throughout the County through such well-known brands as Jones Dairy Farm & Jones Market (Fort Atkinson), Pickle-In-A-Pouch (Waterloo), Kraemer Wisconsin Cheese, (Watertown), and Crystal Farms (Lake Mills). All organizations have rich histories and connections to their communities, that sustain their reputations as industry leaders as well as major employers. Jefferson County is also made up of local farms that help sustain some of the area’s premier farm-to-table experiences, including The Black Sheep restaurant in Whitewater, Sprouting Acres and Cambridge Market Cafe in Cambridge, Brickhaus Café and Edgewater Supper Club in Jefferson. Plus you don’t want to miss the unique dinner events at Milford Hills in Johnson Creek, where chefs go out of their way to offer one-of-a-kind wild game menu options you won’t find anywhere else. One of the ways Jefferson County showcases their proud agricultural heritage is by providing a multi-purpose event facility. Insider’s GUIDE
WHAT THE
locals L ove!
Our Arts Community is One of our Greatest Assets One of Cambridge’s signature events is the Midwest Fire Fest in July. It is a demonstration-heavy celebration of all things created with fire, heat, and smoke including, but not limited to, clay, metal arts, welding, forging, and hot glass. Food and performances are also not to be missed. Other attractions include an on-site firing and hot reveal of a clay sculpture, Community Iron Pour, Fire Dancers, Saturday night’s Fire Feast, and smoking hot music all weekend. In addition to the fabulous Cambridge downtown shopping district, there are independent art studios who open their doors for the Spring Pottery Tour and the Earth Wood and Fire artist tour in the fall. You can get an insider’s look at the creative process and enjoy a drive through our rural landscape. You can shop the studios online and contact the artist directly for hours of operation. Get more information at the theclaycollective.org or cambridgewiarts.org.

Experience the Region from a Birds-Eye View! As an Ice Age Trail community, Whitewater prides itself on helping locals and visitors alike embrace the wonder, beauty, and adventure of the outdoors! Most folks do this on the ground by hiking and biking local segments of the Ice Age Trail and enjoying our beautiful lakes. Our favorite secret to share, is that visitors to our area can explore the wonder of the region from a bird’s-eye view, if they are so inclined. Whitewater is home to the Midwest’s premier hang gliding destination! Just north of Whitewater, off of County Road N, you will find Hang Glide Wisconsin located at the Gutzmer’s Twin Oaks Airport. This amazing experience is a great way for anyone to truly enjoy the beauty of the Kettle Moraine. Hang Glide Wisconsin offers tandem discovery flights that can take you as high as a mile above the forests, lakes, prairies, and kettles. They even give you an opportunity to have a lasting record of your trip through video and photo packages. For the even more adventuresome among you, they offer flight lessons so you can take solo trips into the heavens. Flights can be booked from May to October and are for adventurers of all ages. This experience is a must-do for any trip to Whitewater!

A Photo-Op Outside, and a Step Back in Time Inside! You can’t see the 8-sided solid brick, five-story mansion known as The Octagon House and not be in awe. It is a photo-op outside, and a step back in time on the inside. It is also a love story. John Richards arrived in Watertown, on foot, in 1837. Once here he became the first lawyer in Jefferson County, as well as the owner of several mills. In 1840, Richards returned east to marry Miss Eliza Forbes of Great Barrington. To allay the fears of his bride, of life as a pioneer in a new land, he promised to build her the finest home in the Wisconsin Territory if she would marry him. He did just that. The grand Octagon House includes central heating, running water, and ventilating systems. In addition to those “modern conveniences,” the house features a central spiral staircase which rises from the first floor to the tower room and has 57 rooms counting halls and closets. The Richards family and their descendants resided in the home until 1937, when grandson William Thomas passed away. The Watertown Historical Society arranged to purchase the home from the Richards family on condition that it always be used as a public museum. Since 1938 the Octagon House has been open to the public. 68
JEFFERSON COUNTY: THE OFFICIAL GUIDE 2022-23
Party with a Bunch of Goats!
At the intersection of the Rock and Crawfish Rivers, at the base of the dam in downtown Jefferson sits an island. But not just any island. This island has been the summer home of Buddy, Charlie, and Elsa, just to name a few. Who are these residents you ask? They’re the famous goats of Goat Island. Since 2017, the Friends of Goat Island have placed 3-5 goats on the island from June through September to eradicate the invasive plant species on the island. They love to take breaks when visitors stop by on their personal watercrafts to feed them from the available vending machine. There’s a picnic table to enjoy your own lunch, but don’t count on a quiet, romantic dining experience. It’ll be more like a chaotic meal with preschoolers, only hairier, but still super cute. The seasonal residents are celebrated every August with their Jen Pinnow very own Goat Fest, a family-friendly Jefferson Chamber of Commerce event at Rotary Park where the goats travel from the island for the day. Visitors can pet, feed, and take selfies with the goats, enjoy food, music, beverages, games, and the hilarious goat race across the pedestrian bridge. Local businesses have embraced the goats, too. Stable Rock Winery & Distillery sells Goat Island Vodka all year-round, and makes delicious goat cheese dishes during Goat Fest! Whether you spot them from the shore or visit them in person, Goat Island goats are a definite “must see” when you visit this summer.
