Michigan Marriage License Requirements

• The application for a marriage license must be completed by either the bride or the groom in the county in which he or she resides.

• Valid photo ID, such as a driver’s license, is required to apply. Some counties may require a birth certificate and/or Social Security card.

• The legal age for marriage is 18 years old in Michigan. For couples who are 16 or 17 years old, parental consent is required.

• A Divorce Decree or Death Certificate is not required if either the bride or groom has been previously married, however, he or she must know the dates and locations of the divorce or death, and the certificate may be requested in some counties.

• A blood test is not a requirement in Michigan.

• A 3-day waiting period is required to obtain the license.

• A marriage license is valid for 33 days anywhere in the State of Michigan.

• Most offices are open Monday - Friday.

• Fees vary by County and depend on residency of the State of Michigan.
