reception
TIME TO CELEBRATE!
You’ve said the “I do’s,” kissed the bride, and now it’s time to party! You want your reception to be unforgettable. The venue itself, the food, the ambiance, and the overall guest experience determines just how your reception will be remembered for years to come. Where to host your reception is a huge, day-defining decision. There’s so much to consider. Luckily, we’re here to help!
SET THE MOOD. For a sensuous pause before a high-energy party, have a small jazz quartet set the tone with a wine and micro-beer tasting served with cheese selections.
RECEPTION
The options for ceremony and reception locations have increased dramatically over the past decade. From barns to warehouses, any location capable of hosting a wedding has jumped into the fray. Make sure you both share the same vision.
Once you’ve settled on the aesthetic, you can begin to narrow down locations. Start by considering your guest count and budget. Finalizing these will quickly eliminate any venues that are too small or too expensive.
Most on-site locations provide the majority of goods and services needed for your reception. Off-site locations offer the use of the reception space only. There are pros and cons to both onand off-site venues — what matters is what’s right for you and your wedding! Remember that an affordable venue that doesn’t include any furnishings, for instance, might not be so affordable in the end.
Whatever aesthetic you land on, the same nitty-gritty details will determine whether a particular reception site is right for you. First, where’s the venue in relation to your ceremony site? Make sure there’s ample, convenient parking for your guests, or hire a shuttle or valet service if necessary.
Consider the size and layout of the reception space. Will the entire reception take place in one room, or will there be a separate space for cocktail hour, dinner, and dancing? Ask about possible restrictions on the volume or duration of music and confirm that there’s adequate power and electrical outlets. Do the flooring, wall color, window treatments, and artwork suit the style and season of your wedding?
Once your reception location and details are locked in, the remaining decisions will flow a bit easier. B
RECEPTION GAMES
Wedding reception games are a great way to keep your guests entertained while you are being photographed before the reception or as they wait for food! Some games are also a fun way for your guests to get to know you and your partner a little better!
Couple Mad Libs
Create a Mad Libs-style template for your guests to fill out at their tables for marriage and love advice. This is a wedding game guests can do alone, or the whole table can get in on the fun, sharing their tips on how to keep the romance alive, fun ideas for “married dates,” and other words of wisdom.
Bride and Groom Trivia
Create a list of trivia questions for each guest to fill out at the table. Have a member of the wedding party collect and read the cards to determine the winner. The guest with the most correct answers wins!
Place a disposable camera on each guest table with a list of special moments to capture. Each group will have a different shot from their perspective. Some examples could be the first dance, “cheers,” table selfie, or just let them choose! You won’t know what you end up with until you take the cameras to be developed!

• May I see photographs of other receptions held here?
• Where will we have access? Are there restrictions?
• Is there ample parking for guests?
• Do you provide a sound system, AV or PA system?
• Are there any restrictions on decor, photography, videography, smoking or bar service?
• Will you provide valet, coat check, restroom, bar and door attendants?
• Is there an onsite caterer? Are we required to use him/her?
• Are there adequate restrooms that are handicap accessible?
• Are there adequate electrical outlets for the entertainer?
• Could other events be scheduled the same day?
• Is there a certain time when we must leave?
• How far in advance must I book your services?
• What is your cancellation policy?
• Is a deposit required? If so, when and how much?
Couples are pushing the boundaries of wedding decor! Artistic accents like balloon arches, greenery walls, neon signs, marquee letters, twinkle-light ceilings, and floral installations offer a picture-perfect Instagram moment.
SETTING THE TONE
emotion and individuality
As your guests are being seated, the prelude sets the mood. The processional march introduces you and your attendants, and the recessional shouts pure joy. Organists and harpists are still popular choices. Some churches may require that you use their organist, or not play secular music. You may wish to include another soloist such as a vocalist, flautist, trumpeter, violinist or pianist. Be sure to contact your musicians early to ensure the date. Consider the space of your wedding hall. Even limited room allows you to use recordings of your favorite selections. If a close friend or relative is providing your wedding music, then a gift is appropriate. B

YOUR WALK DOWN THE AISLE
the first time
Your first walk down the aisle is a special time in every woman’s life. Remember, while you want your guests to enjoy themselves, it’s really about you and your special man making a memory that will last forever.
Think about ways to save money. Got a budget? If you want a more elaborate wedding for less money then look into saying your nuptials on a Sunday instead of on a Friday or Saturday.
Meet with the place you will exchange vows and ask questions. The last thing you want to hear the day of your wedding is “no flashes allowed in the church” or “You only have 30 minutes before the ceremony to decorate the chapel with flowers”. Think of the disasters now so you can avoid them in the future.
Invitations are important. In fact, the invitations will be the first thing that many of your guests will see. Think about what you want to say with your invitation and express it with style. As they say, you only have one time to make a first impression.
Eat cake and be happy. Cakes don’t just come in one variety anymore. Think about all those flavors your mother never made like carrot, lemon, strawberries and coconut or even coffee mocha.
Don’t count on your travel agent to do it all. If you are planning on leaving the country, then be sure and apply early for a passport and find out what shots you might need. Also, make sure you leave copies of important documents at home with your family. B
Place Settings! LET’S TALK
Go for extra oomph
Once you’ve curated all the basics of your place setting, it’s time to think about any extra-special touches. Things like sprigs of greenery, fresh blooms, or dried slices of citrus may not add anything functional to your place settings, but they add a dash of elegance and eye-catching beauty.
Layer items thoughtfully
You can display the basics the traditional way with the napkin, fork, and knife to the right of the dinner plate, or you can get creative with it. You might tie the napkin into a pleasing shape and place it on top of the plate. If you have seating cards, you might place these on the plates as well for added visual depth.
Make it count
Upgrade where it counts. Simplify your place settings for the majority of tables, but do your sweetheart table or king’s table up to the nines. After all, your table is the focus of not only your guests’ attention, but the vast majority of your photos. Don’t hesitate to go the extra mile for yourselves.
Add a pop of color
Colored chargers are a great place to start. Two other easy ways to give your place setting a boost are napkins and glassware. Choose a napkin color that reflects your wedding palette. Or, if you have the budget, swapping plain glasses for colorful vintage goblets brings some lovely life to your place settings.

Chicken PiccataMASTER THE DETAILS
The best gift a bride and groom can give each other is a professional wedding coordinator. Today, planning a wedding is more complicated than ever. Most couples have high expectations for their special day, but are novices at planning such a big event.
LEAVE IT TO THE PROS. We always suggest hiring a professional over a family member or friend. Even the most-organized person can’t compare to the experience & expertise of an industry pro.
CONSULTANTS
There are lots of titles used to describe one of a bride’s most-indispensable vendors. Whether a wedding coordinator, planner, or consultant, these professionals are here to make your day a seamless success. After all, many brides say that planning a wedding feels like a full-time job. And the day itself? It’s a lot of work.
Wedding planners are with you from the onset. They can handle all logistics like referring vendors, negotiating contracts, keeping track of your budget, and even making payments. A wedding coordinator, on the other hand, will typically step in much closer to the wedding, perhaps a month or so before the big day. This person will take care of any day-of or lastminute needs, keeping your wedding day and everyone involved on schedule and stepping in if there’s an emergency.
You may want to hire a wedding planner or coordinator if you don’t have time to devote to planning yourself. Planning can take about 5 hours per week, some estimate. If you’re unsure about what’s all involved in a wedding, a wedding planner will ensure nothing gets missed. If you have a short engagement or are planning a destination wedding, a planner is invaluable.
The exact cost of wedding planning and coordination services varies greatly. Some charge an hourly rate, while others bill a flat rate or a percentage of the overall wedding budget. Know that the cost of hiring a wedding planner will be anywhere from $2,000 to $20,000 or more. The cost follows the hours put in; it’s said wedding planners typically spend anywhere from 80 to 250 hours planning a single wedding. B

groom
MOST HANDSOME MAN
Whether you are standing in front or walking down the aisle as the ceremony begins, all eyes are on you. You deserve to look your best dressed in the perfect suit and tie for the most perfect day.
MIX & MATCH. No one said your attendants have to match in height or age. Feel free to pair bridesmaids and groomsmen as you think they would feel most comfortable - also feel free to throw in a loaner!
GROOM
In warm weather, think lighter colors (tan, light grey, white). In all climates, darker colors (navy, charcoal, black) always look sharp. Ties and vests can match the wedding colors or compliment them with neutrals. Add some personality with colored socks and suspenders, or unique boutonnieres. Combining two suite accessories into one is the pocket boutonniere. This chic and modern cluster of florals adds a unique element to your wedding day look with the bonus of no pins. If the bride’s gown is ivory, the men should wear ivory shirts, not white, to compliment her.
Semiformal and formal wedding styles vary, so a groom should work with a formalwear consultant to get the right look for his wedding’s level of formality. The most formal look is “white tie,” calling for a traditional black tux with tails, a vest, a white winged-collar shirt, and bow tie.
When shopping for formalwear, bring color swatches of the bridesmaids’ dresses and pictures of formalwear styles he likes. Nowadays, rental suits come in various fits: classic, modern, and slim. But buying your formalwear promises custom tailoring and the best fit. Fit is key to looking your best.
Out-of-town groomsmen can get measured at any formalwear store or local tailors near them and send their measurements to the groom or to your formalwear store.
Someone should be designated to return all formalwear to the store on time in order to avoid late fees, which can get quite expensive adding up the per day, per outfit costs.
While there are etiquette guidelines for a groom’s attire, remember that men’s formalwear doesn’t have to be stuffy. B

DEFINING YOUR DAY
Through decades of evolving wedding traditions and styles, certain things remain constant like a bride’s white dress and gorgeous flowers to adorn the day. Though we think of flowers as an accent, they’re so much more at a wedding. Flowers help define a wedding’s colors, theme, and mood.
Tip
SELECTING YOUR ASK THE RIGHT QUESTIONS!
• What packages do you offer? What do they include?
• How can we make the most of our floral budget?
• Do you deliver the flowers? Is there a charge?
• Do you provide any other kinds of decorating?
• Do you rent or provide decorations and props?
• Will you come to the ceremony and reception site to plan out the decor?
• Do you set up at the ceremony and reception sites?
• Can you move the flowers from the ceremony to reception?
• Can you provide fresh flowers for the cake?
• How far in advance must I book your services?
• What is your cancellation policy?
CARING FOR YOUR FLOWERS
keeping flowers fresh
• Have delivered flowers be well misted and in boxes with cellophane or other packaging so they get off to a fresh start.
• Keep them out of the direct sunlight as much as possible as the sun will speed up the wilting process.
• If you’re preserving your bouquet, get it to the floral preservation specialist after the wedding as soon as possible. Ask them for instructions on how to keep your bouquet in the best shape possible before it gets to them.
• If you’re keeping any bouquet stems in water before the wedding, be sure to dry them off quite thoroughly before handing them out to avoid any water drips or stains on dresses. B
Show stopping!
Brides are embracing maximalism with fairytale ball gowns, dramatic silhouettes dripping with glamor, or punchy pops of color. While dress shopping, you may see fuller skirts, higher slits, and sheer fabrics. Necklines range from off-the-shoulder to mock-neck. And it’s not only gowns; mini party dresses and gorgeous suiting are also in style.

ENGRAVED FOREVER
guidelines to engraving
There are many guidelines for engraving. Traditionally, the first names of the couple, beginning with the woman’s name, are followed by the wedding date underneath. With this type of message, the individual names are usually larger. Space determines whether you use the word “and” or the ampersand (&).
Traditional monograms include the woman’s first initial followed by the couple’s last initial in the center (engraved in a larger size) and followed by the man’s first initial.
For a special, extra-sentimental touch, many customers may select a short message such as “congratulations” or a short poem. B
ACCESSORIZE YOUR DAY the perfect accents
Bridal accessories are fun and easy items to shop for and they add a bit of personality to any wedding. From shoes and jewelry to toasting glasses and cake servers, accessories are important details on your wedding day.
As you begin planning the major aspects of your wedding, keep an eye out for special or unique items that will reflect your own personal style, hobbies or passions.
Though it may be tempting, avoid procrastinating on these seemingly simple purchases. Some selections may require special order, so be sure to allow several weeks for shipping. B

CAPTURE THE MOOD
After months of fittings, tastings, and planning down to the very last detail, the day you’ve always dreamed of will seem to come and go in a blur. That’s why quality photography is a must! You want to be able to preserve the day and look back on everything that happened.
Through pictures captured in a style that speaks to you, you can remember, relive, and cherish each moment for the rest of your lives.
DO A DRY RUN. Test a photographer for your engagement photos ensures you know and like their style before the busy wedding day.
MUST-HAVES
Make your photographer a list of all the details you want to remember. We’re talking nonpeople pictures - things you put a lot of thought into that might mean more to you than anyone else. You spend so much time planning and the day goes by so fast that you may not even see it all. This way, you won’t miss a thing!

Remember, their business is to serve you. One call or visit can take care of everything. He/She can also provide personal feedback from other customer’s experiences. B
MONEY MATTERS
a component of successful marriages
BY ANN HOMER COOK, PH.D., PRESIDENT, A. HOMER COOK & ASSOCIATES, A MANAGEMENT CONSULTANT FIRM.Unresolved money issues are the number one cause for divorce. Therefore, money matters to a bride and groom beginning a successful life journey together.
Most of us weren’t taught to discuss money in a shared conversation. Here are some good questions to get a conversation started between you and your future spouse. How was money handled in your families when growing up? Were there fights about money? Did you feel well off or poor as a kid? Today, how important is money to you? Do you consider yourself a saver or a spender? Do you have any large debts or assets? Who earns the most money and how does the other person feel about it? Lastly, what are your financial dreams both individually and as a couple? How do you plan on making those dreams a reality?
Before your married life begins, it can be useful to create a starting budget for your household and to agree on who will pay for what within the household. At what dollar amount does one spouse need the permission of the other to purchase?
A regular, set-aside time each month is important to create healthy communication and to reduce tensions. Additionally, the couple’s problem-solving skills are enhanced. Compromise is the key. Where money is spent is where one’s life is. Money management is more than keeping the checkbook balanced.
And the best money management tip? Avoid debt, especially credit card debt, which is particularly draining on a couple. B

BRIDAL SHOW AND TELL
everything in one place
The groom has proposed; you’ve accepted. Now the planning begins. The only problem is that you and your groom probably work fulltime jobs and have hundreds of day-to-day errands and responsibilities. So where do you find the time to plan a wedding?
A bridal show affords couples the opportunity to meet photographers, florists, caterers, bakery representatives, musicians, DJs and many other wedding professionals all conveniently under one roof. These shows also provide the opportunity to sample wares, view vendors’ work and compare your level of comfort with other vendors you may already be considering.
Many bridal shows feature fashion shows where the latest in men’s formalwear,
bridesmaid’s dresses, and bridal gowns are presented. It is a good idea to bring a note pad and pencil so you can take notes on your favorite dresses, tuxedos and the stores that offer them.
Bridal shows range in size from 30 to 200 exhibitor booths. They normally take place on weekends. In addition to fashion shows, you’ll find food samples, entertainment and numerous door prizes and contests to enter so bring stick-on labels with your name, address, wedding date and email address. Consider a special wedding email address that can be deleted after your wedding date to make registering for prizes easier. Local merchants, especially bridal salons, will have information on shows in your area. B
