GOWNS The style and fabric of the dress you choose should be right for you. While we all have a sense of our own style, we might not be well-versed in bridal fabrics, so here’s a quick primer. Satin and silk are by far the most commonly used fabrics for wedding gowns, satin being the most traditional. Pure silk can be quite costly, but silk blends such as charmeuse, crepe de chine, chiffon, organza, taffeta, brocade, broadcloth or peau de soie offer an elegant and less costly alternative. Not to be overlooked, however, are linen, natural cotton, manmade polyester and rayon. The variety of blends, weights and finishes available today provide fabulous options year round. Gown styles range from beaded extravagance to tailored suits. When selecting your gown, consider the activities of the day and choose accordingly. For example, a princess dress may look beautiful in the salon, but might not fit with the overall style and flavor of a beach wedding. The professionals at your bridal salon will be able to help you decide on the style and fabric that best suits your needs and budget, but the determining factor is what makes you feel comfortable and beautiful. TIPS FOR A SUCCESSFUL SEARCH Have a trusting team. Invite along friends or family who will be honest yet accommodating with you. If a dress is unflattering, you want them to speak up but not controlling. Keep an open mind. It’s helpful to have an idea of what you want, but don’t be afraid to wiggle outside your comfort zone. Your consultant will take care of every aspect of your search, addressing alterations and other practical matters. Your happiness should be their top priority. Ask if you’ve been shown all your options while staying within your price range. Don’t be afraid to ask for a different representative if you’re not comfortable. The comfort factor. Strapless can be beautiful but unless fitted properly, many brides find themselves pulling the gown up thought-out the day. Not attractive. A fitted gown can be a bit more challenging to sit in. These are not deal breakers. Just remember that you’ll be in the gown a long time and comfort should be something considered.

Start basic. Bridal magazines and on-line sites can be a great resource. Is there a style of dress you’ve loved on yourself in the past? What was the style? When you see something you like, create a file of your favorites. Also consider creating a board on Pinterest to keep track of your favorites. Open it up to family and friends to add dress ideas as they find them. When you’re ready, bring your final choices to the bridal shop and the more specialized wedding boutiques to review them with their consultant. Designers want a gown to be a classic piece, possibly one you’ll pass down, so often a bold look is simply a modern take on a chic design, one you’ll still smile at in pictures years from now. Here are some of the latest and greatest from the wide world of bridal fashion: Color. Traditional white or ivory gowns will always have a place, but they’re no longer the only option. Designers are adding soft colors like pastels or blush to dramatic accent colors. You can also add color with a sash in the same color as your bridesmaids or flowers or another color completely. LEGS! The thigh high slit for a dramatic leggy look. Short dresses have always been fun for a switch into a more casual reception dress, but they’re gaining popularity down the aisle, especially for summer or outdoor weddings. They show off your legs or a great shoe, and come as light-hearted or couture as you’d like. The new strapless rival. The one shoulder option is now second to strapless, which means the once edgy look now has classic and elegant options. A decorative bow, flower or design on the shoulder strap energizes the look. ALL SHAPES AND SIZES No two brides are shaped alike. That means no two dresses will ever fit, look the same or accent your silhouette in exactly the same way it does another

Since you want the perfect wedding dress for your big day then it is important to keep this in mind when beginning your search for one of the most important purchases of your wedding. For a good rule of thumb surrounding any body type remember: • Petite frames look best in empire waists or sheaths. • Tall women should consider off-theshoulder fashions and full sleeves. • Slim girls can wear full skirts and maybe even a blouson bodice. • Heavy women can hide their extra weight with an A-line design and forget about ruffles. • A larger busted woman will look good in a V or high-neck with little to no decoration added.

• Bigger hips require broad collars and perhaps even a flared skirt. Don’t forget the A-line style either. • Tiny waisted women should consider a clinched-in waistline. • If you hate your short neck then don’t even consider high necklines or detail around the face. • If you have worked hard to tone your back, show it off with a backless gown. • Beautiful cleavage can also be flattered with a sweetheart neckline or a halter. Today’s brides can choose from a wealth of fabrics for that special dress. Lace is the most popular of bridal fabrics, and there are several kinds. Alencon lace, or re-embroidered lace, is a traditional favorite. This is a smooth, floral lace with a “gimp” — a shiny rayon cord — following the pattern of the floral design. The designs are usually small, about the size of a fist. For a softer floral look, try Chantilly lace. Made of cotton or rayon, Chantilly lace is also the ground lace for Alencon. Both the names Chantilly and Alencon refer to regions in France where these laces originated. Another current favorite with today’s brides is Guipere lace, a heavy rayon or cotton lace made without any netting. Motifs are geometric or floral, and appear to be joined together by threads known in the industry as “yarns.” Many dresses are being made to highlight fabrics both smooth and textured. For a lustrous look, choose satin. For a dress with detail, choose a brocade — an elaborately woven fabric with a raised design. Both brocades and satins are made of silk, polyester and rayon. For something different, consider shantung or bridal illusion. Shantung starts as a taffeta or a satin, and has woven “slubs” — threads which resemble tiny cocoons. The original shantung is silk and is named for a province in China. Bridal illusion — a netting finer than tulle — is no longer just the mainstay of veils and headpieces. This fabric is being used for skirting on gowns and detachable trains. Let your bridal fabric weave magic into your wedding gown.

Below are six simple steps to finding the right reception site for your perfect day. Step 1: What to do first The biggest question regarding the reception is “where?” Before you can work on this question, however, you’ll need to know a couple of things: what style of wedding do you envision and how big? Obviously, a casual, relaxed summer afternoon reception would require a completely different reception site than a formal, elegant winter evening reception, so clarify the type of wedding (and the time of year) you both desire first. Once that’s been established, determine the rough guest list, including all interested parties, you and your groom, and each set of parents. Of course, you’ll also need to consider your budget, as this will have a great influence on the number of guests you can afford to have. Once you’ve made these critical decisions, it’s time to start looking for the ideal reception site. As with anything, the more time you have, the better. Some choice reception sites get booked one to two years in advance, particularly for prime dates. Step 2: Start the search Local bridal publications like Premier Bride, the Internet, bridal shows and married friends are all good sources of potential reception sites. If you have no idea where to hold your reception, try hotels, banquet halls, restaurants, community centers and country clubs. Other less obvious options are country inns, historic homes or mansions, city parks, college or university facilities, art galleries, museums and boats. Each location offers its own unique style and ambiance.

RECEPTION There are two basic types of reception facilities: on-site and offsite. Most on-site locations provide the majority of services you will need for your reception: catering, beverages, tables, chairs, tableware, linens and serving staff, making this a very convenient option. The facilities normally charge on a per person basis, and have a minimum guest requirement. Such locations include hotels, private clubs and restaurants. Off-site locations offer the use of the facility only, providing no other services. You supply nearly everything yourself, paying a flat fee for the use of the site. The nice thing about offsite locations is the freedom to do everything your own way, and more choices; although this can also mean more work! Narrow down your search by focusing on those sites that seem to best meet your needs, depending on your style, season and estimated guest count. Once you’ve selected some possibilities, it’s time to go on a road trip with your fiancé, maid of honor and/or Mom and check out the sites in person.

Step 3: Evaluating reception sites Now the real work begins. Every site offers advantages and disadvantages, and your job is to sift through all of the features of each site, to find the best one for your wedding, all while keeping your budget in mind. Here are some factors to consider: Location. The reception site should be no more than a 30-minute drive away from the ceremony location. RECEPTION special challenges to get there (say, located near a football stadium that has a home game on your wedding day), you should consider providing transportation for your guests from the ceremony site, and back to their cars after the reception. Size and layout. Will everything happen in one big room, or in separate rooms for the cocktail hour, dinner, dancing? Will it comfortably hold the number of tables you’ll need, and will everyone dine in the same room? Is there room for a band or DJ, and for cocktail hour musicians, if you’re having them? Privacy. If your venue does multiple events, find out if there are other bookings at the same time or on the same day as yours. If so, ensure that there will be adequate privacy and

separation for your celebration. There should also be ample time in between events to allow your caterer or other service people to set up or break down your party. Parking. Make sure there is convenient, well-lighted, ample parking for your guests, and if not, find out if valet service is available. Technical details. Whether you intend to have a DJ or a band, inquire about possible restrictions regarding the type, volume or duration of music. Be sure to confirm that there is an adequate power supply for speakers, mixers and amplifiers, or good acoustics for string and wind instruments. Some sites have builtin public-address systems which can be used for introductions and toasts. If your site of choice doesn’t offer this

Most sites offer a neutral background to work with, but make sure the flooring, wall coverings and colors will work with the style and season of your wedding. Services offered. Be clear, with each site visited, exactly what is and is not included. From catering and wait staff, to candles and chairs. Get those details up front. A note about outdoor receptions If you’re planning on outdoor reception, it’s critical to have a backup plan in case of inclement weather. Planning for an outdoor reception is usually much more work overall, because you have to provide for everything from the salad forks to the tents to the chairs, and you may need to change plans at the last minute due to the weather! For these reasons, it’s highly recommended that you use an experienced wedding coordinator if you want an outdoor reception. This will ease your workload, and your stress, immensely. Down to details As with any wedding vendor, make sure that all details are outlined in writing, and use a credit card whenever possible when making payments so that you have more protection in the unlikely event of a problem. But at your best friend’s wedding, you’re bound to want to say a few words in his or her honor. If you’re truly prepared to speak in front of people, you’ll find it’s much easier to let the words flow. The best toasts are those that are heartfelt. So start by pouring your heart out. Sit down and list everything you want people to know about your friends. (Remember, it’s important to talk about both the bride and the groom in your toast). Start with the best qualities. Perhaps the only part of a wedding thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s gotten a bad rap throughout the years is the food. CATERING Step 1: Start the search. As soon as you’ve selected your reception site, the catering search can begin. Some locations require that you use their in-house caterer or banquet department, which makes your choice fairly simple. These locations include hotels, country clubs and some of the more unusual facilities such as museums, boats or historical homes. If they allow an independent caterer, you may be asked to choose from a preapproved list. If you’re able to select your own caterer, though, try to narrow down your list to no more than three, otherwise you’ll be tasting for a month and all the flavors will blur together. When you’re calling caterers, make sure to have as much information as you can on hand. They’ll want to know your wedding date, time of day, approximate number of guests, if you’d like a sit-down or buffet meal and the degree of formality and style. If you have any general menu ideas or preferences, let the caterer know so they can be better prepared for your initial meeting. Ask for sample wedding menus and references before a formal meeting or tasting. Step 2: Determine your service style. Right off the bat, caterers will want to discuss your taste and budget in detail. Think about the style and feel of your wedding, and decide whether you want a sit-down meal or a buffet. Then talk about the extras: do you want hors d’oeuvres during cocktails and a late-night snack? How about fruit or coffee with the cake? Step 3: Schedule a tasting. When you finally narrow down your list, the fun part is here, tasting! Don’t be afraid to speak up during tastings, or ask if they can tweak something to your tastes. This is your day and your meal and fulfilling your food wishes is their job. Step 4: Design the menu. Start by searching through magazines, web sites and bridal shows to clarify your likes and dislikes. Think about weddings you’ve attended, or ask caterers or friends for favorites and failures. Then, work closely with your caterer to craft the perfect and personal menu. Remember that the caterer has probably seen lots of weddings and knows what works best with the number of people, the time of day and the locations, so take their professional advice if they think a cool, crisp salad might not be the best appetizer in your outdoor summer wedding. Also keep your guests in mind; you might have to accommodate for lots of children or vegetarians, for example. Step 5: Calculate the cost. Once you’ve selected a caterer, think business and cost. Most caterers base their prices on a per-person cost. Facilities with in-house catering departments may have a minimum charge or set-up fee, while an offpremises caterer will usually work within any reasonable, agreed-upon budget. Keep in mind buffets are usually priced higher, since they’ll have to account for a little more per person, and it’s common to add overage and gratuity.

CATERING Your final guest count is usually required one week before the event. This will be the number of people for which you will actually be charged. Most caterers will plan on the addition of a few last-minute guests and will add the meals to the bill after the wedding. Decide if you’ll include meals for wedding-related personnel, such as the DJ, musicians, photographer and consultant. If cost is an issue, ask your caterer about “vendor meals,” these meals are more casual than the guest menu and are offered at a lower cost per person. Get specifics as to what extras are included in the caterer’s charges, such as table linens, plates, glasses, crystal, silverware and service pieces. Step 6: Plan the help. Once the menu is finalized, the next step is determining the number of wait staff you will need to serve your feast and keep your reception running smoothly. Your caterer will give you a better idea, but a general guideline is one server per 10 to 12 guests for a sit-down dinner, while a buffet is less, one to two servers per 50 guests. A full and open bar will require more servers, one per 50 to 75 guests. Ask ahead of time what their attire is, so it matches the style and formality of your reception. Step 7: Finalize the details, in writing. Don’t sign a contract without this information: day, date, time, address of the site, food items by course, number of guests covered, provisions for special meals, time of cocktail hour, time meal is served, contact people, number of bartenders and wait staff, linens, beverages and

A tented wedding can be either casual or elegant and there are virtually no limits to what can be done indoors that can’t also be done outdoors. Unless your family also owns a circus, the first thing you need to do is find a tent rental company. While scouting a

tent vendor you will need to know a few basics, like approximately how many guests will be attending and where the event will be. A reputable tent company will be able to work with you on the appropriate size tent for your wedding at the specific location. Inquire about other weddings they have handled and if they have done events in a similar location. Now that you have a roof over your head, there are many other factors that need to be considered depending on where your event is located. Bathrooms may be available but if not, they will need to be rented and transported to and from the location. What about tables and chairs? Your tent rental vendor may also be able to handle this need, if not, other sources will need to be used. A temporary floor can be put down if fears 54 • PREMIER BRIDE www.pbnewi.com

of damaging the ground (or clothes) is a concern. This can be handled by your DJ or tent vendor. Speaking of music, what about power and electricity needs? Make sure that your catering vendor can cater such an event and what electrical and structural requirements they need. Simple things that wouldn’t be given a thought for an indoor wedding need to be checked and double-checked for a tented wedding to avoid day-of disasters. One major point of planning that needs to be addressed is consideration for bad weather. Nobody wants to plan for rain on their wedding day but discussions about weather scenarios need to happen, your tent vendor and site manager should have multiple options in case the skies darken. While handling all of the logistical planning for a tent wedding don’t overlook the things that make such an event so memorable and fun. Take advantage of your surroundings with table settings, flowers, and decor that compliment your outdoor location. A major advantage of such a setting is that it allows your guests to mingle and enjoy the outdoor location. Yes, there’s a lot to consider, so let’s break it down with a video evaluation checklist for quick reference: CHECKLIST FOR EVALUATING A SAMPLE VIDEO Evaluate the picture… Is the picture clear and consistently in focus, or is it jumpy, blurry, or shaky? Are there any dead spots?  Does it move smoothly from one scene to the next or jump awkwardly?  How is the lighting? BUDGETING FOR A PROFESSIONAL Professional videographers will spend anywhere from four to 10 hours with you on your wedding day and another 35 to 50 hours editing your wedding video and adding graphics, music, and other special effects. expect to spend an amount similar to your photography budget. When you finally choose your videographer, be sure to ask to see a copy of the contract and make sure you understand the ins and outs of specific costs. Most videographers charge either per camera, per hour, or a flat fee for the finished products you order. Tell the videographer what you want recorded: who, what, where and when. Besides the actual ceremony, will you want footage of the bridal shower or bachelor party? Be sure to include the important people you want filmed--parents, friends and other relatives. VIDEO FUN, POST-WEDDING There’s a new post-wedding bridal trend that would be perfect film fodder — it’s called “trash the dress.” Also known as “fearless bridal” or “rock the frock,” this is a style of wedding photography and videography that juxtaposes an elegant bridal gown against an entirely out-of-place environment. What kind of environments? Try a soggy beach, muddy riverbank, or paintballing war zone. The bride then, as evidenced by the trend’s name, trashes her dress on camera, succumbing to the elements and ruining the gown. But proceed with caution! Be careful when attempting a video shoot near water. Best to “rock the frock” on dry land. Another fun way to play with your video post-wedding is to host a viewing party. Invite close friends and family into your home as husband and wife and relive the day that “went so fast.” Who knows? You might even have some leftover cake and champagne to serve.

VIDEO SOME FINAL WORDS ON “WHY” We all know the obvious reason to invest in a wedding video: you’ll have it forever to view as a couple. MUSIC Live music gives the evening a sort of festive energy and is a wonderful option if your budget allows. The key is finding a band that caters to weddings. These musicians offer versatility and will appeal to guests of all ages. Keep in mind that any live entertainment will require breaks, so find a solution that ensures music is always playing. If the band is large enough, it’s possible the band members can stagger their breaks so that someone is always playing. Or, configure an iPod-and-speaker hookup and play some of your favorites that the band might not attempt. In terms of expense, a live band will almost always cost more than a DJ. Keep this rule in mind: If you can’t afford a good wedding band, hire a DJ. A DJ will be a more cost-effective and can offer an almost infinite variety of music – truly something for everyone. Start six to 12 months before your wedding day so you have time to treat, heal and achieve good results. Facials are a must for all skin types. When choosing your hairstyle consider your gown, the level of formality of your wedding, your personal style, your hair and your face shape. If you choose to purchase your invitations online, be sure to find a reputable retailer, and if possible, give yourself some extra time just in case there is a problem that would require more shipping time back and forth. WHEN TO START Like all wedding responsibilities, the earlier you start, the more time you have to search, thoroughly evaluate options, and handle any problems that arise. If possible, order the invitations and other wedding stationery six or more months before the wedding to give yourselves plenty of time for reading and correcting proofs, printing, addressing, stuffing and mailing. Mail the invitations six to eight weeks before the wedding. Let any out-of-town guests who would need to arrange flights and/or hotel rooms about the date as soon as you know it, either informally through conversation, or more formally with a save-the-date card mailed as early as possible. ALL THE PARTS Wedding invitations are typically comprised of several components, each with a different purpose. There is the ceremony card announcing the details of the ceremony with the optional tissue paper to lay on top (an old custom to protect the other enclosures from stilltacky ink), the reception card if applicable with those details, the response card with its stamped, addressed return 116 • PREMIER BRIDE www.pbnewi.com

envelope, the map if provided which also often includes hotel details for out-of-town guests, and the inner and outer envelopes. Some invitations combine these elements, such as including the reception information on the ceremony card, especially if it’s at the same place or immediately following. It’s also possible to simply eliminate some elements (such as the inner envelope or tissue paper covering the ceremony card), particularly for more informal styles. THE INVITATION WORDING Traditionally, whoever is officially hosting (read: paying for) the wedding is listed first on the wedding invitations. Of course, you can work it out however you like with your families. (This is one area where it’s really important to have good communication between all parties!) Some couples today, who are paying for the majority of the expenses themselves, with help from their mixed and blended families, simply say “Mary Bride and John Groom, together with their families, request the honor of your presence at their marriage…” You could also do a search online to find invitation wording samples and discuss the options with your groom and respective families. ASSEMBLING THE PIECES The traditional way to put together an invite is as follows: start with the ceremony invitation on the bottom, cover with tissue if desired, put the reception card on top of it, and then put the response card with the unsealed return envelope and the map, if you’re using one, on the very top. Slide all items face up into the inner envelope. Do NOT seal the inner envelope, and slide it into the outer envelope with the addressee’s name facing the back flap so that it will be visible upon opening.

INVITATIONS ADDRESSING ADVICE The outer envelope should have a return address included on the back flap, and it’s probably well worth this small extra cost to have this done by the printer, so you don’t have to write the return address on every single invite you send! For the names and addresses of your guests, you can hand-write them, run the envelopes through your printer using a calligraphic font, or for a very beautiful and special touch, hire a calligrapher. Ideally, try to avoid labels, even clear ones, because they just don’t convey the sense of “specialness” and elegance that something as special as a wedding deserves. Street names, cities and states should be written out completely without any abbreviations. To indicate both parties of a married couple, use both “Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Green.” When addressing an unmarried couple living together, use each of their full names: “Mr. Ronald Green and Miss Angela Thomson.” If every member of a family is invited, write “Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Green and Family.” If only the older children are included, their names are written below the parents’: “Miss Erin Green.” Adult children no longer living with their parents should receive their own invite. A FINAL, CRITICAL TIP When you’ve fully assembled your invites, take one to the post office, and have them weigh it, assess it and give you a definitive postage due amount – the last thing you want is 100 wedding invites coming back to you marked “insufficient postage!” So make that extra trip to the post office to be absolutely sure, mail them out, and take a deep breath. The wedding is officially underway!

The time of day of the wedding, the location, and most of all, you and your fiancé will determine the formality of your wedding. In warm weather, think lighter colors (such as tan and white), and in cool weather think darker colors (navy and charcoal.) Grey would likely work anytime, and black is always classic and appropriate. Ties, vests and cummerbunds can match the wedding colors, or compliment them with colors such as white, ivory, silver, grey or black. If the bridal gown is ivory, the men should wear ivory shirts, not white, to compliment her. Semiformal and formal weddings have plenty of options: a high quality, singleor double-breasted men’s suit in black, dark charcoal or navy with a Windsor knotted tie in white, ivory, navy, silver or black is a less formal option. SHOPPING MADE EASY attending bridal shows You may find that the more time you can save in planning your wedding, the better. A Bridal Show can help. Here’s information and tips to help! Plan in Advance: Know your budget. Make a list of what you need most and what your budget will allow for each item and service.

Types of Bridal Shows: Small intimate shows average attendance is between 75-200 people and generally around 20-40 different vendors. These shows allow you much more time to talk with the individual wedding professionals, ask questions and get more in-depth answers. The second kind of show is much larger, averaging anywhere from 800 to 2000 attending and featuring anywhere from 100-250 different vendors. The biggest advantage to this kind of show is the wide range of vendors available and the beautiful displays for great wedding ideas. Pre-printed address labels: Most vendors will have some special drawing for gifts and prizes. Having these labels available will save you time and effort. Include your full name, address, phone number, wedding date and email address. Create a temporary wedding e-mail address: It’s free and can be deleted after your wedding date. This is a good thing. Quality vendors reaching out to provide specific wedding information and tips, along with any special offers they might have. Who should come along: Yes, your fiancé should come along, especially if it’s just the two of you. Decisions can be made on the spot and you both will have a good time! Or, bring a couple of friends, your mother or a whole entourage. Date or Calendar Book: It might be appropriate to schedule an appointment at another time for a more in-depth conversation. Usually any show “specials” will also apply if a date and time is made for a follow-up discussion. There are times when you might want to book something right at the show, such as limited availability and your date is still open. Or you might have already met with a vendor prior and are ready to make the commitment. Shoes: Wear comfortable shoes. The odds are you’ll be on your feet for quite a while. You don’t want to leave until you’re ready, not because your feet are too tired. Pressing onward when you’re feet hurt just isn’t any fun. Children: Avoid bringing small children to the show if possible. While you might not have a choice or it may be tempting to bring your flower girl along to see the neat wedding stuff, they are sure to tire more quickly then you. Prepare for information overload: When you find a vendor you are interested in, make a note about why. What struck you as appealing about this person? When you get home and you’re looking through 10 different photographers, your note may be the only thing you have to remember which ones you liked and why. Also, write down any good tips they might have given you.
