TIPS AND GUIDELINES to finding the gown of your dreams Once upon a time there were all kinds of restrictions regarding wedding gowns. Older brides couldn’t wear long white dresses and any color other than white spoke volumes about the bride. Today, pretty much anything goes as long as the bride is comfortable in the statement she is making with her gown. If you’re not comfortable in a veil, don’t wear one.4 www.pbnewi.com PREMIER BRIDE • 5

GOWNS The style and fabric of the dress you choose should be right for you. While we all have a sense of our own style, we might not be well-versed in bridal fabrics, so here’s a quick primer. Satin and silk are by far the most commonly used fabrics for wedding gowns, satin being the most traditional. Pure silk can be quite costly, but silk blends such as charmeuse, crepe de chine, chiffon, organza, taffeta, brocade, broadcloth or peau de soie offer an elegant and less costly alternative. Not to be overlooked, however, are linen, natural cotton, manmade polyester and rayon. The variety of blends, weights and finishes available today provide fabulous options year round. Gown styles range from beaded extravagance to tailored suits. When selecting your gown, consider the activities of the day and choose accordingly. For example, a princess dress may look beautiful in the salon, but might not fit with the overall style and flavor of a beach wedding. The professionals at your bridal salon will be able to help you decide on the style and fabric that best suits your needs and budget, but the determining factor is what makes you feel comfortable and beautiful. TIPS FOR A SUCCESSFUL SEARCH Have a trusting team. Invite along friends or family who will be honest yet accommodating with you. If a dress is unflattering, you want them to speak up but not controlling. Keep an open mind. It’s helpful to have an idea of what you want, but don’t be afraid to wiggle outside your comfort zone. You might be pleasantly surprised with the results and make a statement walking down the aisle!

GOWNS Get treated right. Selecting your wedding gown should be a truly enjoyable experience. Your consultant will take care of every aspect of your search, addressing alterations and other practical matters. Your happiness should be their top priority. Ask if you’ve been shown all your options while staying within your price range. Don’t be afraid to ask for a different representative if you’re not comfortable. The comfort factor. Strapless can be beautiful but unless fitted properly, many brides find themselves pulling the gown up thought-out the day. Not attractive. A fitted gown can be a bit more challenging to sit in. These are not deal breakers. Just remember that you’ll be in the gown a long time and comfort should be something considered.
Start basic. Bridal magazines and on-line sites can be a great resource. Is there a style of dress you’ve loved on yourself in the past? What was the style? When you see something you like, create a file of your favorites. Also consider creating a board on Pinterest to keep track of your favorites. Open it up to family and friends to add dress ideas as they find them. When you’re ready, bring your final choices to the bridal shop and the more specialized wedding boutiques to review them with their consultant. STYLES The strapless dress still reigns as supreme but the market has expanded greatly in the past few years to include other styles. Trends like bold colors, feather trimmed edges, thigh high slits and dramatic backs are challenging www.pbnewi.com PREMIER BRIDE • 7
GOWNS conventional designs and winning over many brides. It’s important to remember these trends don’t always mean a dress will be too edgy or something you’ll regret in five years. Designers want a gown to be a classic piece, possibly one you’ll pass down, so often a bold look is simply a modern take on a chic design, one you’ll still smile at in pictures years from now. Here are some of the latest and greatest from the wide world of bridal fashion: Color. Traditional white or ivory gowns will always have a place, but they’re no longer the only option. Designers are adding soft colors like pastels or blush to dramatic accent colors. You can also add color with a sash in the same color as your bridesmaids or flowers or another color completely. Throw it on after the ceremony for a different reception look. 8 • PREMIER BRIDE www.pbnewi.com
LEGS! The thigh high slit for a dramatic leggy look. Short dresses have always been fun for a switch into a more casual reception dress, but they’re gaining popularity down the aisle, especially for summer or outdoor weddings. They show off your legs or a great shoe, and come as light-hearted or couture as you’d like. The new strapless rival. The one shoulder option is now second to strapless, which means the once edgy look now has classic and elegant options. A decorative bow, flower or design on the shoulder strap energizes the look. ALL SHAPES AND SIZES No two brides are shaped alike. That means no two dresses will ever fit, look the same or accent your silhouette in exactly the same way it does another

GOWNS woman’s body. Since you want the perfect wedding dress for your big day then it is important to keep this in mind when beginning your search for one of the most important purchases of your wedding. For a good rule of thumb surrounding any body type remember: • Petite frames look best in empire waists or sheaths. • Tall women should consider off-theshoulder fashions and full sleeves. • Slim girls can wear full skirts and maybe even a blouson bodice. • Heavy women can hide their extra weight with an A-line design and forget about ruffles. • A larger busted woman will look good in a V or high-neck with little to no decoration added.
• Bigger hips require broad collars and perhaps even a flared skirt. Don’t forget the A-line style either. • Tiny waisted women should consider a clinched-in waistline. • If you hate your short neck then don’t even consider high necklines or detail around the face. • If you have worked hard to tone your back, show it off with a backless gown. • Beautiful cleavage can also be flattered with a sweetheart neckline or a halter. You will no doubt go through countless number of dresses before picking that special one. For all the rules that you are told to follow you never know when you might slip on a dress that goes against every fashion rule and yet still looks perfect on you.

Today’s brides can choose from a wealth of fabrics for that special dress. Lace is the most popular of bridal fabrics, and there are several kinds. Alencon lace, or re-embroidered lace, is a traditional favorite. This is a smooth, floral lace with a “gimp” — a shiny rayon cord — following the pattern of the floral design. The designs are usually small, about the size of a fist. For a softer floral look, try Chantilly lace. Made of cotton or rayon, Chantilly lace is also the ground lace for Alencon. Both the names Chantilly and Alencon refer to regions in France where these laces originated. Another current favorite with today’s brides is Guipere lace, a heavy rayon or cotton lace made without any netting. Motifs are geometric or floral, and appear to be joined together by threads known in the industry as “yarns.” Many dresses are being made to highlight fabrics both smooth and textured. For a lustrous look, choose satin. For a dress with detail, choose a brocade — an elaborately woven fabric with a raised design. Both brocades and satins are made of silk, polyester and rayon. For something different, consider shantung or bridal illusion. Shantung starts as a taffeta or a satin, and has woven “slubs” — threads which resemble tiny cocoons. The original shantung is silk and is named for a province in China. Bridal illusion — a netting finer than tulle — is no longer just the mainstay of veils and headpieces. This fabric is being used for skirting on gowns and detachable trains. Let your bridal fabric weave magic into your wedding gown.

Reception What you need to know before booking your reception site
You’ve been pronounced “husband and wife,” so now it’s time to kick off those heels and celebrate! This is a time for you and your brand new husband to relax, mingle, dance, chat and thoroughly enjoy the company of your friends and loved ones. Below are six simple steps to finding the right reception site for your perfect day. Step 1: What to do first The biggest question regarding the reception is “where?” Before you can work on this question, however, you’ll need to know a couple of things: what style of wedding do you envision and how big? Obviously, a casual, relaxed summer afternoon reception would require a completely different reception site than a formal, elegant winter evening reception, so clarify the type of wedding (and the time of year) you both desire first. Once that’s been established, determine the rough guest list, including all interested parties, you and your groom, and each set of parents. Of course, you’ll also need to consider your budget, as this will have a great influence on the number of guests you can afford to have. Once you’ve made these critical decisions, it’s time to start looking for the ideal reception site. As with anything, the more time you have, the better. Some choice reception sites get booked one to two years in advance, particularly for prime dates. Step 2: Start the search Local bridal publications like Premier Bride, the Internet, bridal shows and married friends are all good sources of potential reception sites. If you have no idea where to hold your reception, try hotels, banquet halls, restaurants, community centers and country clubs. Other less obvious options are country inns, historic homes or mansions, city parks, college or university facilities, art galleries, museums and boats. Each location offers its own unique style and ambiance.
RECEPTION There are two basic types of reception facilities: on-site and offsite. Most on-site locations provide the majority of services you will need for your reception: catering, beverages, tables, chairs, tableware, linens and serving staff, making this a very convenient option. The facilities normally charge on a per person basis, and have a minimum guest requirement. Such locations include hotels, private clubs and restaurants. Off-site locations offer the use of the facility only, providing no other services. You supply nearly everything yourself, paying a flat fee for the use of the site. The nice thing about offsite locations is the freedom to do everything your own way, and more choices; although this can also mean more work! Narrow down your search by focusing on those sites that seem to best meet your needs, depending on your style, season and estimated guest count. Once you’ve selected some possibilities, it’s time to go on a road trip with your fiancé, maid of honor and/or Mom and check out the sites in person.

Step 3: Evaluating reception sites Now the real work begins. Every site offers advantages and disadvantages, and your job is to sift through all of the features of each site, to find the best one for your wedding, all while keeping your budget in mind. Here are some factors to consider: Location. The reception site should be no more than a 30-minute drive away from the ceremony location. A longer drive than that is really asking too much of your guests! If the location is difficult to find, or will offer www.pbnewi.com PREMIER BRIDE • 17
RECEPTION special challenges to get there (say, located near a football stadium that has a home game on your wedding day), you should consider providing transportation for your guests from the ceremony site, and back to their cars after the reception. Size and layout. Will everything happen in one big room, or in separate rooms for the cocktail hour, dinner, dancing? Will it comfortably hold the number of tables you’ll need, and will everyone dine in the same room? Is there room for a band or DJ, and for cocktail hour musicians, if you’re having them? Privacy. If your venue does multiple events, find out if there are other bookings at the same time or on the same day as yours. If so, ensure that there will be adequate privacy and
separation for your celebration. There should also be ample time in between events to allow your caterer or other service people to set up or break down your party. Parking. Make sure there is convenient, well-lighted, ample parking for your guests, and if not, find out if valet service is available. Technical details. Whether you intend to have a DJ or a band, inquire about possible restrictions regarding the type, volume or duration of music. Be sure to confirm that there is an adequate power supply for speakers, mixers and amplifiers, or good acoustics for string and wind instruments. Some sites have builtin public-address systems which can be used for introductions and toasts. If your site of choice doesn’t offer this

A note about outdoor receptions If you’re planning on outdoor reception, it’s critical to have a backup plan in case of inclement weather. Planning for an outdoor reception is usually much more work overall, because you have to provide for everything from the salad forks to the tents to the chairs, and you may need to change plans at the last minute due to the weather! For these reasons, it’s highly recommended that you use an experienced wedding coordinator if you want an outdoor reception. This will ease your workload, and your stress, immensely. Down to details As with any wedding vendor, make sure that all details are outlined in writing, and use a credit card whenever possible when making payments so that you have more protection in the unlikely event of a problem. You should feel very comfortable with your contact person, and feel that they respond in a timely and efficient manner to your questions and requests. Visit premierbride. com’s online wedding planner for a comprehensive list of questions to ask potential reception sites, and other great wedding planning help.

ENGAGEMENT PARTIES let the fun begin After the engagement ring has been slipped on your finger and the excitement over your impending new life together has finally settled in, someone might approach you and want to give you an engagement party. Engagement parties, often thrown by a family member or good friend, are quite popular. However, remember that there are some etiquette rules to follow when you’re putting this important event together. For one thing, in today’s society there is a good chance that the bride and groom might not even be from the same city or state. That means that the couple’s family and friends might not know one another. This is the perfect time to make sure that your future husband or wife meets everyone that
is important to you in your life. In this case it is appropriate for more than one engagement party to be hosted. Remember, there is no better way to introduce dear Aunt Millie to the man of your dreams than surrounded by family and friends in a comfortable setting. Here are a few things to remember when considering the engagement party: • The party should be held at the beginning of your engagement. It’s not about the wedding, but about the particular exciting time during your engagement. With this party you are commemorating the steps you have taken to spend your life with that someone special. • What a great time for all your family and friends to admire your www.pbnewi.com PREMIER BRIDE • 21

ENGAGEMENT PARTIES engagement ring, right? Invite individuals who are close not only to you, but also the groom. Whether a large or small affair, make sure the time is special by sharing your party with the ones you love in attendance. • Traditionally, it is the bride’s parents that host the engagement party. Sometimes the groom’s parents will also be interested in helping to host. However, don’t get caught up in outdated rules. If you and your fiancé want to host this event then do it. If it turns out that someone else is hosting the party, be sure you and your fiancé take a look at the list of guests so no one is overlooked. • Be sure that the people you invite to the engagement party are also guests you will invite to the wedding and reception. In some cases, location
Y
might make it impossible for your engagement party guests to attend, but it’s important that they are invited nevertheless. • Gifts are not necessary at an engagement party, but if you do receive something, then politely thank the person giving the gift and perhaps open it later. This way you do not run the risk of making those folks who did not bring gifts feel uncomfortable. • Usually the engagement announcement is made during a toast by the bride’s father or the fiancé. This depends on how traditional you want to keep things. This is “the” time that your engagement is made public and, while most people probably already know, some of your guests might be surprised.

ENGAGEMENT PARTIES A few other things to remember is that invitations (they don’t have to be fancy) should be sent out after the best date and time have been determined by both the bride and groom. The venue where the engagement party will be held is also another important consideration. While a local restaurant or hotel is fine, what about going the extra mile and considering a more exciting venue such as a museum, zoo or even an old historical mansion. As for the time of your party, keep it simple, and hold it whenever you’d like. Whether it’s a lunch, a dinner or a cocktail reception, anything goes. Feel free to add some fun and games to your party. Try going with a theme such as a beach party, wine tasting, intimate sit-down affair, open house or even a champagne brunch.
In the case of a casual affair, make sure everyone is relaxed – if it’s at the beach then keep the entertainment going throughout the day and night. Even a wine tasting doesn’t have to be too over the top. If you do decide to go with a theme party be creative and offer party favors such as napkins, place cards or even bottles of wine with your wedding date engraved on it. Another fun idea might be to create your own personalized drink complete with martini shakers or any number of other cocktail glasses. The bottom line when being a part of or hosting your own engagement party is to have fun. This is your special time to get together with those special family members and friends, letting them share in your soon-to-be new life together with the person you love.

HERE’S TO YOU the perfect wedding toast A lot of people fear public speaking, and you may be one of them. But at your best friend’s wedding, you’re bound to want to say a few words in his or her honor. If you’re truly prepared to speak in front of people, you’ll find it’s much easier to let the words flow. The best toasts are those that are heartfelt. So start by pouring your heart out. Sit down and list everything you want people to know about your friends. (Remember, it’s important to talk about both the bride and the groom in your toast). Start with the best qualities. Include memories of good times together, especially the first time they spoke of their beloved. Scribble some thoughts about what makes the bride and groom a great couple. Finally, based on what you know about their common interests, think about what you would want to wish for them and their future together. Now that you’ve got a rough idea of the themes you’ll touch on in your toast, go beyond your own experience. Find memorabilia of the bride and groom’s dating history such as their first concert tickets, old love letters or gifts they bought for one another. You have two audiences. One is the bride and groom and you can make them happy by not saying anything that would cause embarrassment on the most memorable day of their lives. Your other audience is the assembly of relatives and friends of the wedding couple. Stories of drunken revels and ridiculous relationships may be appropriate at the bachelor(ette)

It’s okay to say, “We all know Sally looked high and low for her Prince Charming. Steve, you are that prince.” It’s not okay to say, “We knew Steve was Sally’s prince because he was the first guy who ever called her the next morning.” Grandma doesn’t need to hear that. A toast should last no longer than three minutes, which translates to no more than five liberally double-spaced pages. Rehearse your toast with a stopwatch and see how long it takes. If it’s five minutes or under, don’t worry since under the glare of the spotlight, you may speak faster, or you may decide to skip a section.

FOR LOVE OR MONEY managing a budget Whether you prefer an open-air party under the stars or a sophisticated soiree in a grand hall, budgeting for your wedding reception can be quite a balancing act. Common sense will go a long way in helping you save money without sacrificing the elegance of your day. Budget Building The first order of business is to discuss and agree upon a firm, realistic budget. Keep in mind that the average cost of a wedding in 2014 is between $20,000 and $28,000. The reception will account for approximately 37 percent of this amount. Be sure to go to premierbride.com/planning and download our complete budget to help in your planning.
Choosing the Date and Time The spring months of April, May and June and the fall months of September, October and November are considered peak wedding months. This is the time of year when most ceremonies and reception sites, caterers, musicians and florists are all booked at premium rates. The festive month of December, filled with holiday parties, is also considered a peak month. The more economical dates are the off-season winter months of January, February and March and the summer months of July and August. In addition to season, the day of the week can influence cost. Saturdays have long been the most popular day for weddings. You might consider Friday evening or Sunday for your celebration. Most wedding-related services and

FOR LOVE OR MONEY reception sites will negotiate better rates for weddings held on off days. The Guest List Once the reception budget has been determined, you will need to address the size of the guest list. This is an allimportant factor because the number of people you choose to invite will have the greatest impact on the overall cost, affecting everything from invitations to rentals and catering. Be sensible. If cost is an issue, the guest list will have to be modified. Managing the Menu When planning a menu based on budget, discuss your finances realistically with your caterer. Their calculations are usually based on per-person cost, and can assist you in planning a menu. Sit-down meals are usually the most economical. The menu is limited to two or three main courses with set portions that are pre-plated and served to guests. Buffets offer a variety of choices, but can be a bit costly due to the lack of portion control and the need to have more food available to keep serving trays looking fresh. Serving a substantial variety of hors d’oeuvres at mealtime may seem to be an economical choice, but these tasty, labor-intensive treats can easily equal or exceed the per-person cost of a buffet or a sit-down meal. Budgeting for Beverages The preferred choice for beverage service is an open bar, which is also the most expensive because charges are usually assessed at a fixed, hourly, perperson rate, regardless of consumption. Closing the bar at mealtime then reopening it after dinner is one way to trim costs. Sparkling wine can be

substituted for traditional champagne, and serving a sparkling wine punch is a delicious and economical way to keep costs down. Another option is to supply the alcohol and soft drinks yourself, prearranging the return of any unopened bottles to your local liquor store for a full refund. Taking the Cake The cost of your wedding cake hinges on the size of your guest list, since wedding cakes are usually priced per slice. If you’re on a budget, it can be more economical to order a fairly small yet fancy cake to catch your guest’s attention, while serving the majority of people from simpler sheet cakes made from the exact same ingredients. Financing Flowers Flowers in season at the time of your wedding are more cost-effective than those out of season. Simple, hand-tied arrangements for your bridesmaids are not as labor intensive as traditional bouquets, and therefore are usually less expensive. Try to let your ceremony arrangements do double duty at the reception buffet and head tables. Place seasonal annuals in decorative pots at the guest’s tables. These flowers are simple, inexpensive and sentimental favorites, and guests may take them home afterward as a memento of the day. As you negotiate prices with vendors, remember to get all arrangements in writing. Do not accept any oral contracts or promises, and be sure your vendor spells out the services you will be paying for. Find out precisely what deposits are required, when they are due, and the conditions and time frames for possible refunds.

FINE bringing CHINA MAKEOVER vintage china into modern times Let’s play word association. When we say “fine china,” what words come to mind? Words like “formal,”“tradition,” and “grandma,” right? Nowadays, fine china is thought of as fancier, higher-quality dinnerware and dishes – and frankly, though it used to be the cornerstone of any wedding registry, we just don’t see the need for it. Okay, so you might not register for fine china – but what if your grandma, mom, or aunt bequeath the heirloom pieces to you as a wedding gift? The days of china cabinets are gone, and what good do those dishes do you sitting in boxes in the basement? It’s time to get Grandma’s china out of the cabinets and boxes and onto the dinner table! With the right approach and stylish touches, you can turn traditional dishes into a collection of modern dinnerware that’s uniquely you.
The first rule: Use it every day, not just for company, holidays, and special occasions. Doing so will let you have fun with your china, adding a fancy feeling to something as simple as a bowl of cereal. If you appreciate a vintage vibe, embrace the aesthetic Grandma’s china brings to the table and go antiquing to complete your table setting. There are so many treasures to be found at your local antique stores, and these finds lend an utterly romantic quality to any table setting. But even if you’re not that into the vintage goodies, there are still plenty of ways to modernize decades-old dishes. The easiest way to update fine china is to create an eclectic collection filled with unique place-settings handpicked by you. A traditional place-setting includes a dinner plate, a dessert/salad plate, a soup/

FINE CHINA MAKEOVER cereal bowl, and a mug and saucer. In addition to these pieces, there are countless other extras to acquire to complete your dinnerware collection: butter dishes, a small pitcher for cream, a sugar bowl, large serving platters and bowls, and so much more! Creating the perfect mix won’t happen overnight, but imagine how much fun it will be to always be on the lookout for coordinating colors and styles whenever you’re out shopping. But mixing and matching dinnerware isn’t only fun – it’s on trend! It’s bold and stylish to mix colors and patterns, whether those patterns are in your wardrobe, décor, or kitchen. And when it comes to the kitchen, pattern-mixing couldn’t be easier. Start by looking at the fine china you have to work with. Is it floral? Geometric? A solid color? From there, decide if it would be best to match the colors or pattern found in the china. If you’re matching the colors, feel free to embrace matching dinnerware in any pattern, as long as the colors are a match. You’ll probably want to include some solid-colored pieces too; otherwise the set as a whole will appear too busy. Another option is to seek out various interpretations of one pattern – for instance, make florals your focus. In both cases, make sure the vibe of your found pieces work together. You can mix casual with formal, but strive for a balance. If this task sounds daunting, fear not! You don’t have to tackle all of this on your own. The experts at your local fine china retailers are ready and willing to offer guidance. They can give you ideas for coordinating pieces, assist with maintaining a consistent feel throughout, and help you tie the entire set together. If you start working early, you’ll even be able to list the additional pieces on your wedding registry.

UNIQUE8 GUEST BOOK IDEAS unique wedding guest book ideas Why have a plain guest book at your wedding, when you can do something unique and creative, a lasting keepsake of wedding memories? Here are eight great ideas. #1 – The Photo Guest Book. Your photographer, a graphic designer or you can put together a small book of photographs of you and your fiancé. You can have some text about your love story. Allow enough white space, for your guests to write a short message. This is better suited to smaller weddings, because it’s more timeconsuming per guest. You may have a picture book of your city or someplace you visited that guests can sign, too. #2 – Bring on the Embellishments. Take a plain guest book, and adorn it with beads, lace, ribbons, sequins,
photos, drawings, your wedding invite, collages of words from magazines or poetry, leaves, flowers or any other enhancements your creative, brilliant mind can envision. #3 – Handmade With Love. Make your own guest book with handmade paper and an interesting binding (ribbon, aluminum screw posts, rivets, etc.) Check out your local paper stores for classes, materials and other help. #4 – Fingerprint Tree. Start with a print of a tree. You can make your own or purchase one. There are quite a few on etsy.com. Include your names and wedding date. Put out the print with some ink pads and have your guests ink a “leaf” with their finger. #5 – A framed work of art. Take a great photo of you and your sweetie –

GUEST BOOK IDEAS perhaps your engagement photo or something similar – and frame it using a very wide, bright white mat. Have your guests sign the mat using finetip black markers. For a more classic or modern look, try a black and white photo with a black mat and have your guests sign with either a white pen or metallic pen. Be sure to use products that are acid free so that they don’t ruin the photo over time. This is a beautiful and personal art piece to hang in your new home. #6 – A puzzling idea. Here’s a very unusual idea: a photo of you and your fiancé is adhered to a wood backing and created into a puzzle. Your guests sign the back of each puzzle piece with a fine tip black marker. Learn more and see photos at MGC Puzzles web site – mgcpuzzles.com.
#7 – Serve it on a platter. Use a white ceramic platter and a special pen to create a unique guest book! Some are decorative only, others can be made food and dishwasher safe after firing it in your oven (30 minutes at 300 degrees.) Or, use a sterling silver platter and an engravable pen. #8 – A deep well of wishes or a wishing tree. Invite your guests to write a brief message to you on pre-cut, small pieces of beautiful paper, and drop them into a “wishing well” – any decorative container: a glass vase, large bowl, bird cage, decorated box, etc.or have ties and hang the messages on branches to make a tree. After the wedding, you can either store these good wishes in a memory box or special container, or use them in a scrapbook.

DRINK UP!
give wedding day spirits a special touch
artistgroup.net
“Cheers! Salud! Prost!” We all have a preferred way of drinking to the health of family and friends. What better time to toast life and love than at a wedding? Let’s look at beverage ideas, large and small, adult and kidfriendly, to bolster a day brimming with drink infused merriment.
At the reception, lead with refreshments. During cocktail hour, greet guests with personalized drink glasses doubling as place cards. Try attaching a miniature nametag to paper straws or scrawl names on chalkboard-style stickers and stick them on rustic mason jars. Another way to individualize the drinking experience: Tiny bottles of champagne waiting at each table. Wedding favors for each guest might also be drinkable. If you’re a coffeeloving couple, gift a small bag of coffee grounds labeled “the perfect blend” or “love is brewing.” To give potables even more personality, ask the bartender to create a signature drink for the bride and groom. Be sure to call the drink something clever, like “Marry Me Martini,” “Something Blue Punch,” or, a play on the couple’s last name. For a 40 • PREMIER BRIDE www.pbnewi.com
bride and groom who don’t agree on beverages, go for His and Her drinks… perhaps pink sangria (“Blushing Bride”) and a blue margarita (“Blueeyed Groom”). If you’re connoisseurs of a particular type of alcohol, create an entire focal table dedicated to your spirits of choice. Add a fun touch to the table with handmade signs: “Whiskey for the boys!” or “Eat, drink, and be married!” And if you want things to get really personal (and your venue allows bringing in alcohol), be your own bartender. Pre-mix drinks in mason jars and keep them on ice. Or, if brewing is your thing, brew your own beer. It doesn’t get much more unique than that! Beyond booze, incorporate nonalcoholic refreshments so that there’s a little something for everyone. Kegs of root beer are fun for the kids. Large jugs of lemonade are not only thirst quenching at a summertime wedding, they also make for a very pretty picture. When it’s time for dessert or a late night second wind, consider a coffee bar complete with flavor shots and donut pops as stirring straws. In the winter months, a hot cacao bar with all the marshmallow trimmings and peppermint stick trappings leaves a warm, lasting impression. Want an even more unique-factor? Try soaking fruit in spirits! Popular combinations include champagne soaked berries and tequila-soaked watermelon wedges. Aside from fruit, any gummy candy can also soak up spirits for a yummy treat your guests are sure to be buzzing about long after the boozy gummy-bear buzz has worn off.

Cater ing 7 STEPS to the perfect wedding cuisine
Perhaps the only part of a wedding that’s gotten a bad rap throughout the years is the food. Guests usually expect a dry chicken breast and some sticky rice pilaf, so spicing up the dinner and giving it a personal spin is the perfect way to make your wedding memorable and give your guests some fuel to dance the night away.4 www.pbnewi.com PREMIER BRIDE • 49
CATERING Step 1: Start the search. As soon as you’ve selected your reception site, the catering search can begin. Some locations require that you use their in-house caterer or banquet department, which makes your choice fairly simple. These locations include hotels, country clubs and some of the more unusual facilities such as museums, boats or historical homes. If they allow an independent caterer, you may be asked to choose from a preapproved list. If you’re able to select your own caterer, though, try to narrow down your list to no more than three, otherwise you’ll be tasting for a month and all the flavors will blur together. When you’re calling caterers, make sure to have as much information as you can on hand. They’ll want to know your wedding date, time of day, approximate number of guests, if you’d like a sit-down or buffet meal and the degree of formality and style. If you have any general menu ideas or preferences, let the caterer know so they can be better prepared for your initial meeting. Ask for sample wedding menus and references before a formal meeting or tasting. Step 2: Determine your service style. Right off the bat, caterers will want to discuss your taste and budget in detail. Think about the style and feel of your wedding, and decide whether you want a sit-down meal or a buffet. Then talk about the extras: do you want hors d’oeuvres during cocktails and a late-night snack? How about fruit or coffee with the cake? Talk with a caterer about the different options and appropriateness for the time of day, number of guests and style. 50 • PREMIER BRIDE www.pbnewi.com
Step 3: Schedule a tasting. When you finally narrow down your list, the fun part is here, tasting! Don’t be afraid to speak up during tastings, or ask if they can tweak something to your tastes. This is your day and your meal and fulfilling your food wishes is their job. Step 4: Design the menu. Start by searching through magazines, web sites and bridal shows to clarify your likes and dislikes. Think about weddings you’ve attended, or ask caterers or friends for favorites and failures. Then, work closely with your caterer to craft the perfect and personal menu. Remember that the caterer has probably seen lots of weddings and knows what works best with the number of people, the time of day and the locations, so take their professional advice if they think a cool, crisp salad might not be the best appetizer in your outdoor summer wedding. Also keep your guests in mind; you might have to accommodate for lots of children or vegetarians, for example. Step 5: Calculate the cost. Once you’ve selected a caterer, think business and cost. Most caterers base their prices on a per-person cost. Facilities with in-house catering departments may have a minimum charge or set-up fee, while an offpremises caterer will usually work within any reasonable, agreed-upon budget. Keep in mind buffets are usually priced higher, since they’ll have to account for a little more per person, and it’s common to add overage and gratuity.
CATERING Your final guest count is usually required one week before the event. This will be the number of people for which you will actually be charged. Most caterers will plan on the addition of a few last-minute guests and will add the meals to the bill after the wedding. Decide if you’ll include meals for wedding-related personnel, such as the DJ, musicians, photographer and consultant. If cost is an issue, ask your caterer about “vendor meals,” these meals are more casual than the guest menu and are offered at a lower cost per person. Get specifics as to what extras are included in the caterer’s charges, such as table linens, plates, glasses, crystal, silverware and service pieces. Step 6: Plan the help. Once the menu is finalized, the next step is determining the number of wait staff you will need to serve your feast and keep your reception running smoothly. Your caterer will give you a better idea, but a general guideline is one server per 10 to 12 guests for a sit-down dinner, while a buffet is less, one to two servers per 50 guests. A full and open bar will require more servers, one per 50 to 75 guests. Ask ahead of time what their attire is, so it matches the style and formality of your reception. Step 7: Finalize the details, in writing. Don’t sign a contract without this information: day, date, time, address of the site, food items by course, number of guests covered, provisions for special meals, time of cocktail hour, time meal is served, contact people, number of bartenders and wait staff, linens, beverages and

UNIQUE IDEAS IN CATERING • Give your guests a culinary trip across the globe, with a variety of food stations offering a range of ethnic food…French, Italian, Asian, oh my! Pad Thai, bruschetta, and mini sushi rolls are a fun way to inspire conversation and provide something for everyone. • In addition to the wedding cake, offer a sweets table…cannoli, sundaes, or, pastries • Have a food truck at the reception location to serve appetizers or a taco truck to arrive late in the evening for a late-night snack

• Establish food bars that reflect your wedding style or food personality: oysters, sushi, spuds, waffles/ pancakes, biscuits, omelets, or fruits and veggies, snow cones, sliders, pasta • Use the meal you shared on your first date or the meal you enjoy cooking together as an inspiration for the reception meal or a food bar. • Even if your favorite restaurant doesn’t have a special catering service for those fish tacos, talk to the owner and see if they’d be willing to bend a little, especially for a small wedding. • Have an experienced bartender create a custom cocktail for the cocktail hour and name it in your honor.

GOING GREEN planning an eco-friendly wedding
THE LOCALE Choosing a location that’s close to where most of your guests live is an obvious, simple but effective way to limit unnecessary transportation, as is having the ceremony and reception in the same place. Choose a location already dedicated to sustainability, such as parks, protected areas or museums. THE FOOD Serve local, organic, seasonal cuisine, and ask your caterer about locally raised, organic meats and wild caught fish versus farmed. Before the wedding, research places to donate any leftover food, such as homeless shelters or soup kitchens. THE PAPER Save trees by going high-tech: use a website to list directions, maps, accommodations and other details, and use email whenever possible. For the paper you do use, stick with 100% recycled and renewable cotton paper, and vegetable or soy inks, which use less energy to produce than petroleumbased inks. THE ATTIRE Just say “NO!” to attire made in sweatshops and petroleum-based fabrics. Seek out wedding attire made with natural fabrics such as 100% silk or organically grown cotton, and hemp linen – which has come a long
way since the gunny sack look. Or, recycle! Use your Mom’s wedding dress, or find a vintage dress in specialty stores or on eBay. ardentphoto.com
Can you have a joy-filled wedding celebration and show your love for the planet, at the same time? YES, and it’s not as hard as you think! Read on for some great ways to incorporate eco-friendly touches into your special day.
THE GIFTS AND FLOWERS Visit idofoundation.org for information on including charitable donations on your gift registry to donate a percentage of gift registry sales and make a charitable donation in lieu of wedding favors. Find a floral designer that uses local, organically grown, seasonal flowers, and repurpose the ceremony flowers for the reception to make fewer flowers go farther. Donate leftover floral arrangements to places such as nursing homes, hospice centers or hospitals, so others can enjoy nature’s beauty! THE HONEYMOON Certainly, staying close to home avoids those gas-guzzling airplanes, but if travel is in your future consider environmentally-friendly properties (greenhotels.com). Another idea: consider ecotourism – socially responsible travel that focuses on conserving the environment and improving the well being of local people (ecotourism.org).

TENTED RECEPTIONS
be sure you plan for every scenario and take advantage of your surroundings Wisconsin is home to so many beautiful landscapes (rolling farmland, towering bluffs, and quiet lakes to name a few) that not considering the great outdoors for your wedding is selling yourself short. A tented wedding can be either casual or elegant and there are virtually no limits to what can be done indoors that can’t also be done outdoors. Unless your family also owns a circus, the first thing you need to do is find a tent rental company. While scouting a
tent vendor you will need to know a few basics, like approximately how many guests will be attending and where the event will be. A reputable tent company will be able to work with you on the appropriate size tent for your wedding at the specific location. Inquire about other weddings they have handled and if they have done events in a similar location. Now that you have a roof over your head, there are many other factors that need to be considered depending on where your event is located. Bathrooms may be available but if not, they will need to be rented and transported to and from the location. What about tables and chairs? Your tent rental vendor may also be able to handle this need, if not, other sources will need to be used. A temporary floor can be put down if fears 54 • PREMIER BRIDE www.pbnewi.com
of damaging the ground (or clothes) is a concern. This can be handled by your DJ or tent vendor. Speaking of music, what about power and electricity needs? Often if you are separated from existing buildings a generator will need to be used. Determine the appropriate location for such a device so it doesn’t drown out your guests’ conversation. Make sure that your catering vendor can cater such an event and what electrical and structural requirements they need. Simple things that wouldn’t be given a thought for an indoor wedding need to be checked and double-checked for a tented wedding to avoid day-of disasters. One major point of planning that needs to be addressed is consideration for bad weather. Nobody wants to plan for rain on their wedding day but discussions about weather scenarios need to happen, your tent vendor and site manager should have multiple options in case the skies darken. While handling all of the logistical planning for a tent wedding don’t overlook the things that make such an event so memorable and fun. Take advantage of your surroundings with table settings, flowers, and decor that compliment your outdoor location. A major advantage of such a setting is that it allows your guests to mingle and enjoy the outdoor location. Set up fun lawn games for guests to entertain themselves during the cocktail hour or when the wedding party is taking pictures. The whole point of a tented wedding is to enjoy the wonderful location you’ve picked. With the right planning and execution you and your guests will be able to enjoy both the great outdoors as much as each other’s company.

THE FIRST DANCE the customary practice It is traditional for the newlyweds to share the first dance after the first course and before the entree is served. During the newlywed’s first dance it is customary for the father to cut in for his dance with the bride, as the groom dances with the mother of the bride. At this time the maid of honor and best man may be invited to join those on the
dance floor. The groom then dances with his mother and the bride with the father of the groom. After the couple has danced with both sets of parents and their honor attendants, the master of ceremonies should invite the other members of the wedding party onto the dance floor, then extend the invitation to all the guests.

Consultants HIRING A COORDINATOR: the real-life super heroes
A wedding will most likely be the most involved event a bride and groom will plan in their entire life; vendors are to be contacted and vetted, deadlines need to be set and maintained, and itineraries established all with an eye on the established budget. It doesn’t take much for the happy couple to become stressed out and sour over what should be the best day of their lives.
56 • PREMIER BRIDE www.pbnewi.com
WEDDING PLANNERS Besides handling all the time consuming, stress inducing details, a wedding coordinator can help make the planning process an enjoyable experience. There are so many fine points that go into planning a wedding that it can be difficult for today’s couples with busy careers enjoy the process. Wedding consultants can essentially do everything you need so that you don’t have to worry about it. From handling pre-wedding plans, to coordinating the events on the wedding day, wedding consultants offer services that include as much or as little as you need. Many offer “dayof” services as well. A wedding coordinator should be detail-oriented, organized and reliable. They stay on top of their
field by attending seminars and constantly watching what’s hot across the country. Many belong to bridal consultant groups or associations related to the event industry. They network with vendors, stay on top trends and are experts in exceeding your vision to create something beyond what you ever dreamed. Another common trait they process is creativity. They work within the couples own style and apply it in a way that works for their wedding, creating a beautiful, timeless event. While many couples prefer to pick their own vendors, flower arrangements, cake design and location, wedding consultant can assist or do this for you. It is not unusual for wedding consultant Award Winning ~ Tasteful Exquisite ~ Colorful ~ Trendsetting Stylish ~ Pin-Worthy ~ Detailed Seamlessly Flowing ~ Memorable Impeccably Coordinated but most of all... FUN! We handle all types of events including intimate weddings, large soirees, outdoor tented events, and corporate events - the possibilities are endless. WEDDING PLANNERS to work with the bride, choosing the color of her wedding, flower arrangement and even the wedding gown. On the other hand, consultants are also good at just taking over the small details. In some cases they are only there to coordinate everything on the day of the wedding. If you do decide to choose a wedding consultant, it’s vital it be the right person. Someone you truly like and works well with your personalities. The caliber of wedding planners varies greatly. Hiring a friend because they loved planning their own wedding might work for you, but beware. That doesn’t make them an experienced professional who knows how to orchestrate your event, handle unexpected challenges and take criticism if you have disagreements.
58 • PREMIER BRIDE www.pbnewi.com
FINDING THE RIGHT COORDINATOR: 1. Ask a trusted caterer, another bride or the quality wedding consultants listed in this publication. 2. A professional coordinator should offer an introductory meeting free of change. Discuss your ideas and see whether or not you’re comfortable with them. 3. Look for someone with experience and be sure they have references. How long have they been in the business. 4. Questions to ask when you check references should include: Did the consultant help to achieve what you wanted? Did they listen to your comments and concerns? Did they pay close attention to your wedding budget? Would they use them again?
5. Are they a member or certified with a professional Association of Bridal Consultants, such as ABC. OTHER IMPORTANT NOTES: 1. Find out exactly how much the wedding coordinator charges. Some charge an hourly rate; others bill a flat rate or perhaps a percentage of the overall wedding budget. Still others take a fee or commission from vendors they trust and use often.
2. Ask how payments to vendors are made and what exactly the planner does on the wedding day. Read carefully the paperwork the planner provides. 3. A good wedding coordinator is like a good accountant. In the long run, they can save you time and money. That translates into a happier and more relaxed day for you.

WEAR AND CARE tips to protect your dress • Have your gown pressed and padded at least two weeks early. • While you’re wearing the gown, use common sense. Protect it from moisture and mud, and lift the train above dirty floors. However, don’t be so cautious that you don’t enjoy yourself. • Use plastic sheets to cover questionable areas outdoors. • Keep track of white beverage spills, such as white wines, champagne and soda. Left untreated, yellowing will occur. • Consign your gown to the cleaners even if it seems in perfect shape after the wedding. Perspiration and other obscure stains will make their mark over time, and become embedded in a matter of weeks. Make sure the cleaner knows what caused any spots.

Cleans and heirloom preserves your wedding gown and memories for future generations. Archival packaging used. Environmentally correct.
• Only mend tears when you’re sure the fabric can stand the strain. • Store your gown carefully. Plastic bags seal in humidity and high temperatures, which cause mildew. Hangers stress sheer fabrics, such as lace, organza or marquisette. • Invest in a dust-proof “heirloom box,” which preserves delicate beads and fabrics and retards wrinkling. • Really paranoid? Try hermetic sealing, which protects the gown indefinitely. • Only remove your wedding gown on special occasions after it has been stored.

WEDDING DAY STYLE quirky, elegant and unforgettable So you’ve found the guy, found the dress, but you really want your bridal look to scream YOU!? Consider adding one or all of the following into your bridal look. Personalize it: Have a patch made, or even a piece of the gown embroidered with your custom monogram with your new initials and wedding day on it. Make the embroidery blue, so that you have the “something blue” covered. You can also add an image if you would like, instead of a monogram, like a heart or other picture that is special to you. Have the patch or other insignia added to the inside of your gown, this will be something that you will see, but it adds that extra touch of you, on your wedding day. Wearing a veil? Consider having the bottom of the veil embroidered with white or ivory thread, it is simply unforgettable. 82 • PREMIER BRIDE www.pbnewi.com
Have a Surprise!: You might want to think about adding a fun layer of fabric under your gown. Have the fabric sewn on the inside of the gown, and get ready for a photo op! If your gown isn’t full enough, you might consider having a crinoline dyed to your favorite color. Your Shoes: Gone are the days of plain ivory heels, and enter a whole new world of shoes for your wedding day! From cowboy boots to bridal sandals, brides are finding shoes that appeal to them, and express their personality. Have fun with this one, and make sure you get shoes you can wear over and over again! Not Just White: You might be in love with the color pink, why don’t you wear a pink wedding gown? Color is very in style right now, and you might consider wearing a dress in your favorite color.

CREATIVE DETAILS enhancing the guest experience! For the thirsty ones. Start with a bride and groom signature cocktail or His and Her drinks. Another trend is martini ice sculptures where guests pick their preferred martini flavor and watch as it glides through the sculpture, chilling along the way. In the spirit of “help yourself” dinner and dessert bars, try a whiskey table for the fellas, jugs of flavored lemonades or kegs of root beer for the kids. For a late-night treat, offer a coffee or hot cocoa bar complete with all the fixings. ardentphoto.com
Give your guests a night they’ll never forget! Creative details really help to make a wedding celebration magical and memorable for your family and friends: For the little ones. If children are invited to the wedding and reception, consider hiring a babysitter for part of the evening. The babysitter can be stationed in a room off of the main reception hall that’s fully equipped with kid-friendly movies, games, and food. For kids of all ages. Set up lawn games like croquet, cornhole (bean bag toss), or horseshoes. Hire magicians, living statues, walking food tables, facepainters, or caricature artists. For the foodies. Dinner doesn’t just have to be “your choice of chicken or beef.” Play with your food! Try the buildyour-own trend with a gourmet burger or baked potato bar topped off with all the trimmings. Serve a Bride’s Menu and Groom’s Menu featuring each of your favorite foods, or offer ethnic cuisine to celebrate each family’s nationality. Serving a late night snack? You can’t go wrong with pizza. For those with a sweet tooth. Be it donuts, cupcakes, or s’mores, there’s really nothing stopping you from turning your favorite sweet into your wedding day dessert. Love candy? Imagine an entire table chockfull of pixie sticks, gummies, and rock candy — all in colors coordinated to match the décor. Have an ice cream obsession? Try make-yourown sundaes with toppings galore, or scoops of artisan Gelato for a more continental vibe. If you’re throwing an entirely elegant affair, a chocolate fountain is always a classic way to wow.
For the dramatic. Show your favorite movies during the reception and don’t forget the popcorn, candy, fountain sodas, and red carpet photo un-booth! Give your wedding a theme, and ask guests to dress in costume. Some ideas might be: dressing all in black and white, from a certain era, or from fictional world. For the more traditional. Set a table with photos of your parents, grandparents, and great grandparents on their respective wedding days. Be sure to include all of the must-have songs and activities during the dancing portion of the evening — everything from the Electric Slide to the garter and bouquet toss. photo booth never hurts either!

PHOTOGRAPHY DETERMINE YOUR STYLE Wedding photography is more than just documenting the event – it’s about capturing the spirit of the couple and their day. Choose a photographer whose style matches you as a couple… Formal or traditional: Posed, color photos of you, the groom, your respective families, and the wedding party; classic moments (“Kiss the bride,” cake-cutting, first dance, etc.) will be captured. Photojournalistic: Shot like a news event, capturing hundreds of candid moments and real emotions; more black and white photos for a timeless feel. Artistic: Special effects (double exposures, hand tinting, borders, etc.) used to create dramatic, one-of-a-kind pieces of art. So which style is right for you? Think about what you want in the end: Frame-
worthy shots of you and the groom? Oodles of heartfelt moments? An artistic piece to hang on the wall? Many photographers offer a mix of these styles, so browse friends’ wedding albums, surf professionals’ websites and blogs, and clip photos from magazines to find what speaks to you. RESEARCH PHOTOGRAPHERS Once you’ve established your style, it’s time to shop around. Start by collecting referrals from friends, reviewing wedding resources like Premier Bride, attending bridal shows, and scoping out local photographers’ websites and blogs – and don’t forget to consider pricing. Make a short list of potential photographers that specialize in the style you desire and suit your budget. Then set up a phone or in-person consultation. www.pbnewi.com PREMIER BRIDE • 89
Are you staying within your budget? It’s extremely critical to have a pricepoint in mind before searching for and committing to a photographer. It’s disappointing to fall in love with a photographer’s work only to later discover their rates exceed your spending allowance. Do your best to meet only with photographers you can afford.

PHOTOGRAPHY EVALUATE YOUR OPTIONS When at a photography consultation, ask yourself: Do you like their work? Make sure you see examples of individual photos and complete wedding albums so you know what to expect in the end. Some larger studios employ more than one photographer; find out exactly who will be shooting your wedding, and view their work, specifically. Do your personalities mesh? Of all your wedding vendors, the photographer is the one you’ll be working with most closely on your big day; it’s important that your personalities click. Can you talk freely about your vision and ideas for your pictures? Do you get a sense that this person will fit in nicely with you, your fiancé, and your wedding party? 90 • PREMIER BRIDE www.pbnewi.com
KNOW WHAT’S INCLUDED IN THE PACKAGE As you chat with photographers, it will help to know what’s usually included in wedding photography packages. Most photographers offer these elements “a la carte” or can create a custom package that meets your specific needs – don’t hesitate to ask. Here are some examples of items that might interest you. Bride & Groom’s Album: These vary in size, color, construction quality, and price; be sure to compare the size and photo quantity that various photographers offer – and make sure you’re comparing apples-to-apples. Parents’ Albums: These are smaller versions of the bride & groom albums and will include prints that have been specially selected to create a custom photo book for each family. Prints: You will probably want to order more photos for framing and gifting than what would be given to you in the bride & groom and family albums. Don’t underestimate how many extra prints you might want, as this will definitely impact your budget. Proofs: Ask your photographer how many proofs you will get and in what format (small photos, digital disc, online gallery, etc.). GET THE SPECIFICS At your consultations, learn the nitty gritty details. When is a deposit required?
PHOTOGRAPHY Do they use a backup camera? What if your photographer falls ill or has a family emergency on the day of your wedding? When will proofs be ready to view? Will online ordering be available for your guests? It’s best to work out the details and arrange for contingencies upfront. The answers to these questions might also help you compare one photographer to another and come up with a final decision. ASK ABOUT THE EXTRAS Proposal photos: If you’re the groomto-be, hire a photographer to shoot the first step in your marriage – the proposal! Your bride will thank you later for capturing this magical moment. Engagement photos: Many photographers offer engagement shoots as part of the package. These photos are more laid-back and candid, so play up your personalities. Photobooth: These are one of the most popular trends in wedding photography. Opt for color or black and white prints and play with props like feather boas, hats, and mustaches – your family and friends will love it! Added bonus: Most photobooths print two sets of pictures. Guests can keep one as a souvenir and add the other to your guest book – you’ll end up with a collection of photos and scribbled well-wishes to enjoy for years to come! While many photographers offer photobooths, there are also photobooth companies that specialize in this service and may have different packages depending upon what you want. Fun photos: Wedding pictures don’t have to be just you and your bridesmaids all in a row – have some fun with it! Let your personality shine
through. Do you and your fiancé love ice cream? Take pictures at your local creamery (just don’t spill on the dress!). Do you love board games? Spell out “LOVE” with scrabble pieces, using your engagement ring for the “O.” The bottom line: infuse your personalities wherever possible. Have family and friends who you definitely want photos with? Make a list; with the craziness of the day, it’s the only way you’ll remember to ask for a picture with Great Aunt Martha. Download our Ultimate Planner online at premierbride.com/planning where you’ll find a list of questions to ask and a checklist of must-capture moments. Share and add to this list with your photographer to ensure that no memorable moments are missing from your once-in-a-lifetime photos.

FUN capturing WITH PHOTO BOOTHS the excitement and emotion of your guests
artists-eyes.com
A wedding is just one day, so everyone knows photos are a great way of capturing the excitement and emotion for years to come. The professional photographer usually does a great job of snapping the couple, but pics of your friends and family members celebrating with you will be great mementos going forward.
In the past, couples used to leave disposable cameras at tables for guests to point and shoot, but the chance in finding a gem amongst those blurry, low-quality shots is rare, especially when kids get their hands on them. Plus, the cost of developing film is going up steadily. Instead, a fun, plucky alternative can be to get a photo booth. Photo booth rentals are becoming popular at wedding receptions –not only do you get too see everyone in their finest for your big day, but they can take home a quality memory from the wedding. Photo booth rentals are different in size and output. Some give guests prints of their pictures right away, in 94 • PREMIER BRIDE www.pbnewi.com
the traditional photo booth setting, with the four black and white prints on one single strand. This is a great way to give guests a souvenir right away, especially because it’s a unique type of print. Other photo booths just continuously shoot throughout the night, and provide the couple with a digital record of all the shots taken. Then, guests could go to an online database to choose which photos they want and print them at their own convenience. The newest innovation in photo booths is a flip book, which is more interactive and involves a true keepsake for everyone. With a flip book, a representative from the company is on hand, acting as kind of a mini-director encouraging guests to perform skits or don playful costumes. At the end, it’s put together into a video and everyone receives a copy. One fun way to really spice up the photos is to supply props like goofy hats, accessories, or fake mustaches for guests to poke around with. A chalkboard or dry erase board is also fun, so family and friends can doodle a special message or sentiment and capture it on film. A giant, decorative frame is another fun prop to create the picture-within-a-picture look. When deciding on a rental, choose one where you can really customize it, if you’d like. You could ask for the background to be matching the colors of the wedding, or add your names or the date to a sign at the top of the photo. But no matter how basic it is, your family and loved ones smiling faces will make it a truly personal memory!

THE JOY OF VIDEO: preserve your day in living, moving color What’s a common complaint of brides and grooms? “It all went so fast!” Investing in a high quality wedding video lets you revisit the sights and sounds of your special day for years to come. These memories in motion are priceless, so plan to spend the time and money necessary to do it right. In short: hire a professional.4

PROFESSIONAL VIDEOGRAPHERS: OFFERING QUALITY & CREATIVITY In recent years, wedding videos have dramatically improved. Professional videographers have the technology, talent, and time necessary to produce videos with excellent quality (think: clear audio, crisp visuals, and sharp editing). A good videographer will remain inconspicuous throughout the day and capture intimate, uninhibited moments of you and your guests. You’ll see every laugh, every tear, every “blooper” — everything from the rustle of your gown to the choked-up tone in your dad’s champagne toast to the best man highfiving the groom. Often times, your video can be much more than a straight-forward recording. Technological advances make for boundless creativity. Videographers offer fun options like a movie trailer for your wedding video, complete with opening or ending credits and a narrating voiceover. There’s also documentary-style filming, complete with bride and groom monologues or “confessionals.” A videographer can give you that “behind the scenes” look at your wedding day. In addition to the final wedding video, some videographers offer sameday services such as rush editing of wedding day highlights or photo and video montages to show at your reception. Projectors for these shows are recommended and may be available through your videographer. These upgradeable video services are growing in popularity and could add the perfect final touch to your celebration — your guests will be totally entertained by all those sometimes-touching, sometimeshilarious moments.

If you’re a high-tech couple, put your videographer to work before the wedding. Work together to create a video-style “save the date” for the folks on your guest list. You can save money by uploading this video to your wedding website or YouTube, then sending friends and family a link to view it. Or you can burn the “save the date” to a DVD and mail a copy to each household. Video invites are modern, fun, personal, and, if worked in to your videography package, a potential money-saver. CHOOSING A VIDEOGRAPHER When researching professional videographers in your area, visit their websites and view a sample video. Just like photographers, each videographer has a unique style — make sure you and your videographer share a similar vibe and vision. Pay close attention to make sure the sample meets your www.pbnewi.com PREMIER BRIDE • 97
VIDEO expectations in terms of video detail and quality. Things to consider when viewing a sample video include the clarity and stability of the picture, as well as the videographer’s ability to smoothly edit and transition the material. Another thing to keep in mind: audio. Knowledge of remote microphones and where to position them is key — a good videographer will have this under control. Yes, there’s a lot to consider, so let’s break it down with a video evaluation checklist for quick reference: CHECKLIST FOR EVALUATING A SAMPLE VIDEO Evaluate the picture… Is the picture clear and consistently in focus, or is it jumpy, blurry, or shaky? Are there any dead spots? Does it move smoothly from one scene to the next or jump awkwardly? How is the lighting? Evaluate the sound… At the ceremony, can you clearly hear the bride, groom, officiate, and readers? At the reception, can you clearly hear the toasts? Is the audio muffled or difficult to hear at any point? Are the music selections and volume appropriate? Is the crowd and ambient noise controlled? Evaluate the overall effect… Is the video too short, too long, or just right? Is it entertaining? Does it trigger emotion? Does it look like the work of a professional? BUDGETING FOR A PROFESSIONAL Professional videographers will spend anywhere from four to 10 hours with you on your wedding day and another 35 to 50 hours editing your wedding video and adding graphics, music, and other special effects. Taking into account all of the professional equipment, experience, and time spent, you should 98 • PREMIER BRIDE www.pbnewi.com
expect to spend an amount similar to your photography budget. When you finally choose your videographer, be sure to ask to see a copy of the contract and make sure you understand the ins and outs of specific costs. Fees are usually figured by number of cameras, assistants, editing time and special production costs. Most videographers charge either per camera, per hour, or a flat fee for the finished products you order. Tell the videographer what you want recorded: who, what, where and when. Besides the actual ceremony, will you want footage of the bridal shower or bachelor party? Be sure to include the important people you want filmed--parents, friends and other relatives. VIDEO FUN, POST-WEDDING There’s a new post-wedding bridal trend that would be perfect film fodder — it’s called “trash the dress.” Also known as “fearless bridal” or “rock the frock,” this is a style of wedding photography and videography that juxtaposes an elegant bridal gown against an entirely out-of-place environment. What kind of environments? Try a soggy beach, muddy riverbank, or paintballing war zone. The bride then, as evidenced by the trend’s name, trashes her dress on camera, succumbing to the elements and ruining the gown. But proceed with caution! Be careful when attempting a video shoot near water. Best to “rock the frock” on dry land. Another fun way to play with your video post-wedding is to host a viewing party. Invite close friends and family into your home as husband and wife and relive the day that “went so fast.” Who knows? You might even have some leftover cake and champagne to serve.
VIDEO SOME FINAL WORDS ON “WHY” We all know the obvious reason to invest in a wedding video: you’ll have it forever to view as a couple. But so will those guests who couldn’t make it to the celebration. Having a video to share with family and friends who weren’t present on your wedding day will be a wonderful treat for them.
And for every aging family member who not only made it to the ceremony but also to the dance floor, those memories (and dance moves) will be preserved forever. Finally, at the risk of jumping the gun, do it for the future kids. They’ll love watching “The Day We Got Hitched” time and again just as much as you will.
B
EXITING AS MAN AND WIFE make your send off memorable, fun and unique petals thrown in the air and an elegant indoor wedding can have balloons, streamers, or party poppers as the couple exits. Get creative and most importantly make it fun, this is the last time your guests will see you on your wedding day so make it a scene they’ll remember. Regardless of what your exit is make sure that the venue you are in will allow such activities. Nothing dampers spirits more than finding out your planning is Gosia’s Photography
The first time that a husband and wife walk down the aisle together as a married couple is a memorable event but their evening send-off can be just as remarkable and also a lot more fun. Gone are the days of handfuls of rice and a stretch limousine, today’s couples can say bon-voyage to their guests with both personality and style. Looking to make a dazzling display? Have your guests wave sparkles as you and your partner race off to a waiting car (just make sure the limits of the sparklers are known before lighting them, singe marks on a wedding dress aren’t in style). A kid-friendlier idea that is no less magical is to have guests blow bubbles, of which the bottles could be placed at everyone’s table as a take-home keepsake. Concerns about the safety of wildlife have all but ended the traditional throwing of rice but handfuls of confetti (in any variety of colors, even those matching your theme) provides the same effect. Especially creative brides can use their specific ceremony and receptions sites for inspiration; an outdoor summer wedding can feature flowers or flower
useless because someone forgot to run things by management. Another important person to clue in is your photographer, your exit is an excellent photo opportunity so make them aware of exactly what to expect so they can get the perfect shot.

Music The sound of romance
Weddings are rather visual affairs; from the fancy dress to the picture-perfect venue, there’s a lot to see. But nothing sets the mood quite like music. From stirring melodies at the ceremony, to easy background tunes at cocktail hour, to up-tempo beats that get the dance party started, your choices in music are the soundtrack to your special day.4 www.pbnewi.com PREMIER BRIDE • 103
MUSIC CEREMONY MUSIC What have you always envisioned for the soundtrack to your ceremony? A vocalist? String quartet? Solo pianist? When weighing your options for ceremony musicians, consider your vision, but also look to your wedding’s style and venue; make sure there is harmony between the location and the music you choose. Think back to past weddings you’ve attended: What did you like about the music for each ceremony? What didn’t work so well? Did you cry like a baby when friends of bride played a charming, acoustic tune? Did you cringe when the groom’s cousin, even with the best of intentions, sang entirely off-key? Your guests could likely react the same way, so choose wisely! Once you and your fiancé have some ideas in mind, check out local musicians. Visit bridal shows, review bridal publications and online sources like premierbride.com, or ask for referrals from recently married friends or your ceremony officiant. You could also work with an experienced talent or booking agency that offers convenient, one-stopshopping for all your wedding music needs. Narrow down your options, and arrange meetings to hear your musicians and singers in person before signing any contracts. After you’ve secured musicians for your ceremony, they can help you decide on what songs to include. Most musicians who specialize in weddings have a lot of valuable experience and will be a great resource for song suggestions. Your ceremony officiant will also be helpful in guiding your musical selections. Already have the sounds of your ceremony in mind? Speak up, and let the musicians do the rest. 104 • PREMIER BRIDE www.pbnewi.com
COCKTAILS AND DINNER MUSIC Background music is a must for bringing romance to the latter part of your wedding day. Conversation is key during cocktails and dinner, so the tunes should set the mood, but not intrude. You have three main options: Use the musicians that played during your ceremony, use the band or DJ that will be playing at your reception, or hire entirely different musicians. If you decide to have live music, come solid options include: chamber music, classical or acoustic guitar, or a jazz ensemble. Each of these offers subtle entertainment without overpowering the scene of mixing and mingling. A seasoned pianist can also be a fun choice, if he or she can play a wide range of musical styles — and take requests! If you go with your reception’s DJ or band, make sure they keep it on the softer side. You might even want to make a list of songs to be played during this time to keep the soundtrack on, well, track. RECEPTION AND DANCING MUSIC Dinner and dessert are over – it’s time to hit the dance floor! Let’s face it: This is one critical decision that can make or break an entire wedding, in the eyes of the guests. Fortunately, most musicians who specialize in weddings are talented professionals, and with the tips included here, you’ll be able to confidently select an excellent entertainer – and selection of dance tunes – for your big day. First and foremost, ask yourself: Live band or DJ? While there are pros and cons to each, it always comes down to personal taste and budget. Start researching musicians early in the wedding planning process – this way, once you find someone you like, availability is less likely to be an issue.

MUSIC Live music gives the evening a sort of festive energy and is a wonderful option if your budget allows. The key is finding a band that caters to weddings. These musicians offer versatility and will appeal to guests of all ages. Keep in mind that any live entertainment will require breaks, so find a solution that ensures music is always playing. If the band is large enough, it’s possible the band members can stagger their breaks so that someone is always playing. Or, configure an iPod-and-speaker hookup and play some of your favorites that the band might not attempt. In terms of expense, a live band will almost always cost more than a DJ. Keep this rule in mind: If you can’t afford a good wedding band, hire a DJ. A DJ will be a more cost-effective and can offer an almost infinite variety of music – truly something for everyone. Bonus: No breaks! Some keys to finding happiness in a DJ: 1) If possible, see them live before booking. 2) Consider personality – are you looking for a crazyfun, “gettin’ jiggy with it” party animal or an upscale, keep-it-classy entertainer? 3) Ask for, and follow up on, several references. 4) Communicate. Clarify what songs and events (first dance, father & bride dance, bouquet & garter toss, etc.) you do or do not wish to include. Decide on the details ahead of time; make a “do not play” list of any songs you simply can’t stand and a “must play” list of songs you don’t want to miss. All things considered, whether you go for a band or DJ, your dance party will be a guaranteed success as long as you treat your guests to a wide variety of music. From Frank Sinatra to Michael Jackson to Justin Timberlake, diversity is key in playing a little something for everyone.

SETTING THE MOOD WITH LIGHT an illuminating approach to décor
ardentphoto.com
Lighting is the most underrated part of planning a wedding today. Nothing sets the mood like a sparkling runway for your reception entrance, a dramatic backdrop to the cake and other focal
points, or a sensual blaze that falls on your first dance. Details like bridesmaids’ shoes may go unnoticed, but the glow of your event will set the tone your guests will remember for years to come. Take this into consideration as you decide how to illuminate your wedding. First, decide on the mood you want to convey at different points throughout your day. If your ceremony is at a charming church and your reception at an upscale venue, the lighting is going to be quite different. Even during the reception, there are special moments you´ll want lit differently. Would you like a party-ready, flashbulb entrance, or maybe something quieter and romantic like a twinkle-lit archway? Do you want sensual, candle-lit tables, or something more bold and dramatic during dinner like a crystal-draped chandelier? Consider the mood you want, then work with a professional who will focus on practicalities such as making lighting affordable, photo-friendly, safe, easilycontrolled, and customized. One popular way to customize lighting is emblazoning monogrammed 108 • PREMIER BRIDE www.pbnewi.com
spotlights on the wall or floor. Monograms can be as bold or subtle as you like and look best when there is a sharp contrast, such as a dramatic cobalt blue against a dark wall. Visit your site at the same time your event will be held to determine where and what type of lighting you would like to use. In a venue with drab walls, utilize backdrops to transform the room. Drape mesh overlay that`s in your color scheme from the ceiling to the floor as if it were a tent, then use twinkle lights, striking spotlights, crystals, or whimsical orbs to illuminate the backdrop and bring personality to the room. If your venue doesn’t give you that much freedom with lighting, work with an expert to create a beautifully lit focal point you can add to the room. It could be spotlights on a stunning cake, a flirty archway entrance, glitzy dance floor cover, or an eye-catching tree dazzled with crystals or small candles. You may want to have just a color wash and have the color change throughout the event, i.e., gold tones for the cocktail hour, blue while guests are eating, and orange and pink while the crowd is dancing. Candles are the most time-tested and romantic form of light. Make sure they´re in fire-proof and child-friendly places. The secret to candles is irregularity. Arrange different sizes and shapes along mismatched levels to add mystery and make the enlightened objects dance. Your lighting designer can help you figure out the best type of lighting for your budget. Whatever lighting you decide on, don`t underestimate the importance of the rays. They´ll be the backdrop of the pictures and memories you and your guests will remember as your perfect day.

Beauty THE ART of looking your best
It’s the big day: All eyes are on you and everyone wants to take your picture. The dress is perfect and you just know the groom’s jaw is going to drop. Combine your own unique sense of style with a few tricks of the beauty trade and you’ll be ready for adoring gazes and photos galore.4

WHAT TO DO Now is a great time to focus on healthy, glowing skin. If you’re concerned about the health and appearance of your skin, then consider a visit to a dermatologist (for bigger problems) or an aesthetician (for minor issues.) Start six to 12 months before your wedding day so you have time to treat, heal and achieve good results. Facials are a must for all skin types. Regular treatment results in refined pores, smoother facial lines, healed blemishes and a more radiant complexion. When choosing your hairstyle consider your gown, the level of formality of your wedding, your personal style, your hair and your face shape. Generally speaking, the more elaborate the gown, the simpler your hair should be, or it all simply becomes “too much of a good thing.” Work with your hair stylist four to six weeks before the wedding to find the right style for you – and bring a photo of your gown with you! Whether you use a pro for your makeup, have a friend do it or do it yourself, do a trial run before the wedding. In addition to feedback from close friends and/or family, take photos and evaluate those. Do you like what you see? Do you want to make any changes? Have your eyebrows professionally shaped at least two weeks before the wedding. Touch up if needed before the wedding with a tweezers. Do use waterproof mascara and eye makeup, just in case you shed a tear or two… And use primers underneath your foundation, lipstick and eye shadow, so that your makeup lasts longer.
BEAUTY Take good care of your skin everywhere! Body wraps detoxify, refresh and soften the skin using minerals or other natural substances. Body waxing is one of smoothest and longest lasting forms of hair removal. WHAT NOT TO DO Don’t alter your style too dramatically for your wedding day look. You want to look like yourself – your best self – and “polished” enough to honor the fact that this is a very special occasion. Avoid trendy looks in makeup, nail color and hairstyle. 10 to 20 years from now, these styles will glaringly stand out and look distractingly outdated. If you’re considering any drastic hair changes, do it a couple months before the wedding. This way, if you don’t like it, you have plenty of time to make changes. Avoid facials for two or three days before your wedding, in case it causes any kind of undesirable reaction. OUR FINAL, AND BEST, ADVICE DO strongly consider using beauty professionals for your wedding day hair, makeup and nails. This is one simple way to shorten the list of wedding-day worries! A true makeup artist will know trade secrets not only for fashioning a longer-lasting look, but also for accentuating your features. A great hair stylist can help you create a look that complements your facial features, headpiece and veil, and do it in a way designed to hold through the last dance. When you go pro, the end result is a relaxed, picture-perfect bride. Finally, don’t forget your most beautiful accessory: your radiant, lovefilled smile.

Invitations The first impression
You’ve been planning your dream wedding for months, but for your guests, the invitation is their first glimpse of what’s to come. It provides a clue to the event, and the level of formality, along with some indication of your wedding style: Formal or informal? Modern or traditional? You’ll want an invite that matches… and so, let the search begin!4 www.pbnewi.com PREMIER BRIDE • 115
INVITATIONS WHERE TO START Wedding invitations include so many tiny etiquette details, from how to list the names to how to address the envelopes to how to arrange all the enclosures… and for this reason, it’s ideal to find a qualified local professional to be your “go-to” person for all of these questions – and more. If you choose to purchase your invitations online, be sure to find a reputable retailer, and if possible, give yourself some extra time just in case there is a problem that would require more shipping time back and forth. WHEN TO START Like all wedding responsibilities, the earlier you start, the more time you have to search, thoroughly evaluate options, and handle any problems that arise. If possible, order the invitations and other wedding stationery six or more months before the wedding to give yourselves plenty of time for reading and correcting proofs, printing, addressing, stuffing and mailing. Mail the invitations six to eight weeks before the wedding. Let any out-of-town guests who would need to arrange flights and/or hotel rooms about the date as soon as you know it, either informally through conversation, or more formally with a save-the-date card mailed as early as possible. ALL THE PARTS Wedding invitations are typically comprised of several components, each with a different purpose. There is the ceremony card announcing the details of the ceremony with the optional tissue paper to lay on top (an old custom to protect the other enclosures from stilltacky ink), the reception card if applicable with those details, the response card with its stamped, addressed return 116 • PREMIER BRIDE www.pbnewi.com
envelope, the map if provided which also often includes hotel details for out-of-town guests, and the inner and outer envelopes. Some invitations combine these elements, such as including the reception information on the ceremony card, especially if it’s at the same place or immediately following. It’s also possible to simply eliminate some elements (such as the inner envelope or tissue paper covering the ceremony card), particularly for more informal styles. THE INVITATION WORDING Traditionally, whoever is officially hosting (read: paying for) the wedding is listed first on the wedding invitations. Of course, you can work it out however you like with your families. (This is one area where it’s really important to have good communication between all parties!) Some couples today, who are paying for the majority of the expenses themselves, with help from their mixed and blended families, simply say “Mary Bride and John Groom, together with their families, request the honor of your presence at their marriage…” You could also do a search online to find invitation wording samples and discuss the options with your groom and respective families. ASSEMBLING THE PIECES The traditional way to put together an invite is as follows: start with the ceremony invitation on the bottom, cover with tissue if desired, put the reception card on top of it, and then put the response card with the unsealed return envelope and the map, if you’re using one, on the very top. Slide all items face up into the inner envelope. Do NOT seal the inner envelope, and slide it into the outer envelope with the addressee’s name facing the back flap so that it will be visible upon opening.
INVITATIONS ADDRESSING ADVICE The outer envelope should have a return address included on the back flap, and it’s probably well worth this small extra cost to have this done by the printer, so you don’t have to write the return address on every single invite you send! For the names and addresses of your guests, you can hand-write them, run the envelopes through your printer using a calligraphic font, or for a very beautiful and special touch, hire a calligrapher. Ideally, try to avoid labels, even clear ones, because they just don’t convey the sense of “specialness” and elegance that something as special as a wedding deserves. Street names, cities and states should be written out completely without any abbreviations. To indicate both parties of a married couple, use both “Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Green.” When addressing an unmarried couple living together, use each of their full names: “Mr. Ronald Green and Miss Angela Thomson.” If every member of a family is invited, write “Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Green and Family.” If only the older children are included, their names are written below the parents’: “Miss Erin Green.” Adult children no longer living with their parents should receive their own invite. A FINAL, CRITICAL TIP When you’ve fully assembled your invites, take one to the post office, and have them weigh it, assess it and give you a definitive postage due amount – the last thing you want is 100 wedding invites coming back to you marked “insufficient postage!” So make that extra trip to the post office to be absolutely sure, mail them out, and take a deep breath. The wedding is officially underway!

CAKES What first? Your dessert should match your day, so take everything into account. If you have a paisley themed wedding, a large tiered cake with paisley fondant would make a beautiful room centerpiece. A casual outdoor wedding is perfect for a table of tasty and colorful candies or makeyour-own ice cream sundaes. Do you
share an interest such as running? Get a replica cake of your running shoes tied together at the laces. Wedding cakes and desserts are one of the latest wedding designs to challenge convention, so bakeries want to keep up with the latest trends and customize. If you have a sweet idea, find someone who can work with it. Book Early! Bakeries fill up quickly. Stay safe and book six months in advance. Don`t worry – this doesn`t mean you have to know exactly what you want so far ahead of time. First, shop around in general for bakeries, and when you find one you think can satisfy your needs for taste, quantity, efficiency and personality, book a date. Then, you can really work with a pro to determine exactly what it is you want. So…how do I find the bakery? Trusting your gut is always sound advice, especially so when it comes to a food decision! Any dessert should be delicious, so your tasting is important. Make sure you sample all they have to offer that interests you. But since this isn’t an ordinary dessert you’re ordering, make sure you’re comfortable with the efficiency and professionalism of the bakery as well. They should return your calls and e-mails on time, be flexible with you and your needs,

CAKES be willing to customize your dessert, be familiar with your reception venue and guarantee an on-time dessert, including of course set-up, delivery, and clean-up if necessary. You don’t want to be worrying about if your cake is going to show up on your big day. As with every wedding decision you make, don’t be afraid to switch bakeries or make demands if you don’t feel comfortable with the service you’re receiving. And the cost… Cakes are typically priced by the slice, depending on the style, ingredients, size and decorating. Your reception site or caterer may also charge a plating fee as well, often per person, to cut and serve the cake. Ask about this, and
if there is a plating charge see if it’s negotiable. Cutting the Cake Most likely your baker will provide tips for you and your new spouse to accomplish the time-honored task of cutting the cake with ease. Plan ahead to have your cake knife and lifter engraved or decorated with ribbons or fresh flowers. Traditionally, the bride grasps the knife with her right hand and the groom covers her hand with his. Together, the couple glides the knife into the delicious masterpiece while flashbulbs pop. 1 Year Later Some bakeries offer ‘anniversary cakes’ as part of their bridal packages. CAKES of your wedding cake (which doesn’t always freeze well, or taste that great a year later), the bakery will make you a fresh cake, often in the same style and flavor as your wedding cake, for your one-year anniversary. MORE DESSERT OPTIONS Centerpiece cakes - Pull double duty and use a beautiful wedding cake as the centerpiece for each of your tables. Some ambitious newlyweds stop at each table to cut and serve their guests the cake, which is a beautiful idea, but depending on the timetable and the number of tables this won’t work for everyone. S’mores - There’s really nothing like roasting marshmallows on an open fire! Give your guests s’more than they ever expected by surprising them with all the fixings to make this sweet treat. Cupcake Tower - Individual cupcakes are fun, the perfect serving size and allow for all kinds of decorating freedom you might not have with a traditional cake. Cupcake arrangements could be anything from a tower that resembles a traditional tiered cake to something more inventive such as mismatched layers of different colored cupcakes over decorated shelves. 122 • PREMIER BRIDE www.pbnewi.com
Make-Your-Own-Sundae! - Who doesn’t love an ice cream sundae? Think of every topping you can, and then some, then let your guests run wild. Perfect for an outdoor summer wedding or one with lots of children, your guests will be craving this at every wedding they attend after yours. The make-your-own theme can also be popular with the cupcakes, if you provide a few types of frostings and toppings. Candies Table - Colorful candies is sure to make eyes pop and sweet teeth scream. Arrange glass containers such as antique jars, fishbowls or giant martini glasses of gummies, chocolates, licorice, jelly beans, mints, toffees and more over an expansive table. Then, give guests a little (or huge!) plate or plastic bag and let them be a kid in a candy shop again. Pick treats that match your colors (often wrappers and candy colors can be custom ordered if they don’t match yours) or just let a rainbow of sweets entice the room. Late Night Coffee - This works best for small, upscale weddings with mostly adults as guests. Bring in a barista to whip up comforting lattes, cappuccinos and espressos to go with some rich coffee pastries such as biscotti or tiramisu.
B
THE CANDIES TABLE a different twist to satisfy every guest’s sweet tooth Sure, the wedding cake is a tried and true part of weddings since before any of us can remember. But why give your guests one measly piece of cake when you could let them indulge in a buffet full of candy? Choose Your Sweets Remember candies and sweets come in every shape, size and delectability, so take your guests, venue and design into account, then choose your treats accordingly. For an outdoor, casual wedding full of light and color, you might want to go for a rainbow of whimsical variety with bright rock candy, every hue of jelly bean, gummies, silly-shaped chocolates, lollipops, gumballs, striped candy canes and a chocolate fountain with marshmallows and fruit. An indoor, more upscale formal event could call for candies such as toffees, exquisite varieties of chocolate bars, biscotti cookies, decorative chocolatecovered pretzels and strawberries, macaroons, pastry puffs and sugar or yogurt coated nuts and raisins. Design Like your sweet selection, your design can match your wedding. For something casual and playful, arrange your colorful candies in clear jars of every shape and size like an old candy store. A more upscale look could present your desserts in classy giant martini glasses or on small decorative plates arranged on different levels over an expansive, dramatically lit table. Custom-order candies or candy wrappers to stick within your color scheme. Only choosing candies of two or three colors also creates a striking design.
Another fun idea is to put two or three different candy containers at each individual table as centerpieces so guests can mix and match as they mingle between tables. Like Kids in Candy Stores! Once you’ve decided on your sweets and display, get ready to let sweet teeth run wild. Prepare fun dessert plates, plastic bags, or oversized wine glasses where guests can collect their treats. Make sure every separate serving dish has a decorative scooper so fingers don’t dirty the delights, then step back and let the inner child in all your guests pick and choose from the tasty array. As guests are leaving, give them an artsy, monogrammed bag and ask them to peruse the buffet again for an edible wedding favor.

Flowers
BRIDAL BLOOMS: design a beautiful wedding with flowers The romantic link between weddings and flowers dates back to ancient civilizations where garlands of flowers, leaves and vines were worn or carried by young brides to symbolize their beauty and innocence. Wedding flowers have since evolved from simple hand-held bouquets to vibrantly artistic creations used to set the mood and theme for the entire celebration.4 www.pbnewi.com PREMIER BRIDE • 125
FLOWERS Flowers have adorned weddings for hundreds of years and for good reason: they are beautiful! Breathtaking bouquets, gorgeous centerpieces, fresh boutonnieres... colorful gifts from nature will give you and your guests a visual feast. They set the mood and theme for the entire celebration, so be sure to give this area some time. It is recommended to book your florist 8-10 months in advance if possible. WHERE TO START Your research will start from the first bridal magazine you open to the first bridal website you visit. Collect photos, color sample and anything else you want to share with your florist. Create a Pinterest board to save your ideas. Also, establish a clear list of anything you definitely don’t like. Determine your floral budget. FINDING A FABULOUS FLORIST Find a potential florist in a local print publication such as this one, at bridal shows or on-line. Select up to four and meet with them in person. Interviewing more than this could easily get overwhelming! Your goal is to find someone who has a style that you love, a personality that you mesh with, and who is also an organized professional. Bring the following items with you when you meet your florist for your first big planning meeting: a photo of your wedding dress. This will influence the style of your event. Is it streamlined, modern and simple or heavily beaded, traditional and ornate? Know your wedding colors, ceremony and reception locations. Share the images you like and dislike 126 • PREMIER BRIDE www.pbnewi.com
and bring fabric swatches of your bridesmaids’ dresses and any other wedding color. One more thing to share with your florist is your budget amount! It’s quite critical that you share this with your designer, so they can meet your needs at a price you can afford. Their knowledge will put it all together. What flowers hold up beautifully in the sun while which are better suited for indoors. For example, it probably would not be wise to select gardenias if you are planning an outdoor wedding at midday in June. Gardenias are as delicate as they are beautiful and under such conditions they would wilt long before the minister says, “you may kiss the bride.” FOR YOU AND YOUR WEDDING PARTY The first item of consideration will be the bridal bouquet, since all other floral arrangement will take their cue from this piece. It provides the perfect opportunity for you to bring your own style and personality to the forefront. Consider a second, smaller version to throw at your reception if you’d like to keep yours or have it preserved. THE CEREMONY Before making decisions regarding the floral arrangements for your ceremony, be sure and check with your chosen church or synagogue for any restrictions. It’s useful to reuse ceremony flowers at the reception site, but some churches request that altar arrangement remain on-site for weekend services. Ceremony arrangements are usually ideal for buffet, gift and head tables if using them twice is an option.

FLOWERS RECEPTION ARRANGEMENTS There is a vast array of options for reception centerpieces: elegant vases filled with cut flowers; tower candelabras; topiaries; or simple rose petals scattered around flickering candles. Use your imagination to design one-of-a-kind centerpieces that express your style. Keep in mind that the height of the arrangements should not interfere with the ability of guests to converse with each other. They should either be low enough to talk over or high enough to talk under. Placing the wedding party’s bouquets at equal intervals at the head table also provides excellent decoration. Running greenery laced with flowers across the length of the head table is another option. You might consider using this decoration for the cake table as well.
If your budget allows, consider adding a few finishing touches here and there, such as flower petals on serving trays or garlands along the front of the buffet tables. You can also fill in a large room with potted ferns or ficus trees placed strategically and wrapped with strands of small white lights. Share all of your ideas with your floral designer, who can help you refine them to create a lavish and memorable impression that won’t soon be forgotten by you or your guest. Traditional bouquets are all white and can combine a range of blossoms that are unique in shape and size. Colored blossoms are definitely “in” for bridal bouquets as well as ceremony and reception arrangement. From exotic tropical stems to gorgeous, scented garden herbs, the selections and combinations are virtually endless.

Great for adding shape and texture, craspedia adds an element of fun and whimsy to any setting.
Elegant in its simplicity with large and open buds, calla lilies often work best in bunches or as the base for larger arrangements. Also come in a “mini” size that won’t overpower other flowers.
Although affordable, their short shelf-life can provide headaches for those wishing to create flower arrangements in advance. Can also be found in novelty colors if needed.
Colors can range from soft pastels to bright and shining, a popular choice as they can be found year round but are best in late summer when grown locally.

Most commonly found in red poppies’ large and bright blooms with dark centers work best in contrast to lighter accompanying colors. Very difficult to find and maintain.

Radiant in all colors, this flower catches the eye and can be found year-round without issue.
Soft with pastel colors. Their tall and fragrant blooms provide fantastic contrast to smaller, tighter flowers.
Luscious with oversized blooms. Their light appearance work well against softer color schemes. Cost effective in white but more colorful options are pricier and hard to find.
Their wonderful scent combined with affordable price make lilacs a spring-time favorite. Weather dependent so a backup flower is recommended.
Elegant, simple, and pricey. Great for not only the bridal party but also boutonnieres.

Their ability to come in all colors of the rainbow, availability in every season, and classic appearance are just a few of the reasons why this flower can be used in any aspect. Garden roses offer a lusher and full appearance with greater texture.
A mainstay in weddings for half a century, stephanotis provides a timeless and vintage look in all-white.
Unique, attention grabbing, and pricey. Can be used as both eye-catching accents in bouquets and as table pieces.
Big, bright, and bold. Their chunky appearance works well in a stand-alone bouquet or as an accent in a larger piece. Fantastic for a rustic or shabby-chic theme.
Perfect for DIY weddings as they have a long shelf-life and are readily available. Being water sensitive they perform best in table settings as opposed to bouquets.
If you’re interested in a rustic or barn wedding then look no further than large grouping of wildflowers, their multitude of colors and appearance provide a 100% natural look. A great option for the DYI bride.

The time of day of the wedding, the location, and most of all, you and your fiancé will determine the formality of your wedding. In warm weather, think lighter colors (such as tan and white), and in cool weather think darker colors (navy and charcoal.) Grey would likely work anytime, and black is always classic and appropriate. Ties, vests and cummerbunds can match the wedding colors, or compliment them with colors such as white, ivory, silver, grey or black. If the bridal gown is ivory, the men should wear ivory shirts, not white, to compliment her. Semiformal and formal weddings have plenty of options: a high quality, singleor double-breasted men’s suit in black, dark charcoal or navy with a Windsor knotted tie in white, ivory, navy, silver or black is a less formal option. For a more formal look, consider a tuxedo with a single- or double-breasted dinner jacket, a white or ivory pointedcollar shirt, a vest or cummerbund and either a bow tie or a four-in-hand tie (a “fancy” knotted necktie). A very formal wedding, called “white tie,” calls for the traditional black tuxedo with tails, a vest, a white winged-color shirt and a bow tie. If you can envision a symphony conductor’s attire, this is “white tie.” The groom and groomsmen should reserve their rentals at least three months in advance of the wedding. Final measurements should be taken about three weeks before the ceremony; however, be sure to come back a few days before the wedding for last-minute alterations. Finally, it’s critical to get a perfect fit. Even the best outfit won’t look good if the fit isn’t right. Rely on the expertise of your formalwear consultant.

WEDDING CATASTROPHE? we’ll tell you how to avoid it When thinking about your big day insurance doesn’t cross your mind. However, there is A LOT of money, time and effort being invested in your wedding. If something goes wrong would you be fine with completely losing that investment? You want your wedding to be perfect. You don’t want to worry about what you would do if the unthinkable happened. Wedding insurance covers a wide range of damage and mishaps. If the bride’s dress or groom’s tuxedo is damaged or lost, or if the rings disappear, you can get repair or replacement cost for them. If severe weather forces you to postpone your wedding you can get reimbursement for non-recoverable expenses. If your wedding photographs are damaged or lost, insurance can cover the cost to have the photographs retaken. Damaged gifts can be repaired or replaced. This is just a small list of what you can be protected against. Wedding insurance not only protects, it is also extremely affordable. It can cost as little as $160. After the big day, the gifts your guests gave you to start your journey can be insured with Renter’s Insurance. And let’s not forget about the first home you purchase to raise your family. Not only will you want to protect the home itself with a Homeowner’s policy, but also make sure that you will be able to pay your mortgage in the event of the unforeseen. Life Insurance and savings plans can give you and your future children some security for your future. Contact a local independent agent to find out more so that you can rest easy for this day and all the days to follow.

Transportation GETTING THERE: Wedding Day Transportation
The moments between the ceremony and the reception are giddy, exciting ones, and it’s only fitting to be whisked off in a carriage or ride off into the sunset. But those happy endings aren’t even practical. So even if the transportation between the ceremony and reception isn’t fit for a Hollywood screenplay, here are some tips to make it as fun, affordable and memorable as the rest of your day.4

FIRST: HOW MANY? Your search for transportation starts once you decide how many people you’ll be moving. Do you want just the bride and the groom in a vehicle, or is the entire wedding party heading to the reception together? If the whole party is going, do you want to include their spouses or dates? What about the couples parents and new in-laws? Once you make those decisions, you can start searching around for transport based on size. Then, you can pick out a limousine, a coach party bus, a trolley, or something more unique and personal for the couple. Whatever you decide on, keep safety in mind while revelers are bouncing from place to place. LIMOS If there is a day to splurge on this iconic luxury vehicle, your wedding is certainly the day. Unlike some other forms of transport, a limo can be booked for an entire day, so you could get a high-class ride to pick you up at the house, delivering you to the ceremony, reception or even to the airport to jet away on a honeymoon. Most companies have a one or two hour minimum for their services, so think about what the most costeffective way would be to keep the limo around. If you want a car for both going to and leaving the ceremony, it might be more affordable to hire two separate cars rather than pay for the vehicle to sit there during a long reception. There are quite a few options for limos. A formal limousine seats four people, and sometimes a bride and groom will travel to the ceremony alone. Or, if you’d like to include the

www.heritagelimousine.com 920-855-6166 TRANSPORTATION wedding party, stretch limos can allow for six to 10. For larger parties and a flashier mode of transport, sport utility models like the Hummer and Explorer are popular and unique both inside and out. The larger models are often posh, with flashy lights and decorative interiors. CATCH THE COACH For larger wedding parties or those that want a little extra elbow room, a party bus or luxury coach is a great way to travel from the ceremony to the reception. It’s got all the amenities and style of a luxury limousine, but with more room to spare –these will seat up to 10 people very comfortably. Or, for even bigger parties, a passenger coach or party bus can seat anywhere from 21 to 49 people, so it can be a great way to get a few special guests and family members on the special ride between locations. Or, if you have a very small wedding and the ceremony and reception are separated by a long distance, this is a fun way to get all the guests in on the party right away. Like limousine services, passenger and luxury coach companies require a minimum number of hours. The size and type of coach will determine the hourly rate. Depending on the size of
your party it may make sense to hire two coaches, maybe a luxury coach for the bride, groom and attendants and a passenger coach for the guests. This provides guests with a little more flexibility, as well. TAKING THE TROLLEY An attractive, fun and picturesque alternative to a limo or passenger coach is a trolley, if it’s available in your area. Trolleys generally can accommodate between 20 and 35 people, so they’re great for larger parties or adding on some family members or friends. With their antique look and old world charm, they’ll lend a lovely, elegant touch to this wedding day detail. Since most have outdoor decks, these are especially fun in small towns so you can take a peek outside and watch onlookers wave at the newlyweds. And there’s no transportation alternative that looks as great in photos! UNIQUE ALTERNATIVES Vintage cars are also great photo ops and add a touch of class. An antique Rolls Royce or a ’69 Mustang are fun and something you don’t get to ride in every day. Ride in style like the royal couple did in their April wedding in a decorated navy soft-top Aston Martin Volante. www.pbnewi.com PREMIER BRIDE • 141
TRANSPORTATION Or, as with everything else in the wedding, make sure the transportation connects to YOU. Maybe you met at a Harley rally – ride off on your twin Hogs! Or maybe you share a love of mountain biking – don’t be afraid to wheel over on a tandem together. Personality is what makes weddings memorable, so however you move, make sure it’s full of your style. DOWN TO DETAILS Make sure to confirm transportation booking and verify pick-up and departure times well in advance of your wedding dates. And don’t be afraid to ask for a test drive! DESTINATION WEDDINGS is it right for you? More and more couples are planning destination weddings and combining their wedding celebration and honeymoon. Here are a few reasons why. For anyone with a sense of adventure, there is no limit to the fun you can have when you choose a destination wedding. That’s why many brides and grooms are no longer taking the traditional church route, but instead looking for the perfect foreign country, distant mountain or secluded beach. From riding a camel across the desert to exchanging vows underwater in Mauritius, anything is possible with a destination wedding. One reason that so many couples are choosing destination weddings nowadays is because brides are busy. Most destination wedding resorts around the world have wedding planners who take care of the details so that you don’t have to. Destination weddings allow couples to express themselves. Often, for the second or third time couple, it is about making a statement and expressing to family and friends an idea of how they see their future together. Destination weddings can also be taken care of at once. Usually the wedding planner will handle the flowers, photographer, caterer, musicians and reception area, all with your input. In most cases the wedding planner will take care of the marriage license too and all you have to do is send the necessary documents.

BACHELOR (ETTE) PARTIES take on a new look During the last several years, there has been a trend away from the “party till dawn at a gentlemen’s club” affair or a “girls go wild” night. Bachelor and bachelorette parties are about family and friends getting together, sharing old stories and, perhaps, creating some new memories. A day, an overnight or a weekend immersed in an outdoor adventure with plenty of time before and after for fine dining and visits to the local pubs is a great way to do just that. The adventure bachelor(ette) parties give the best man and maid of honor a chance to sign the group up and then relax. From the time of arrival, everything is planned out. Wisconsin offers great options for this type of party. Choosing a destination within driving distance is a plus. Five things to consider when planning the perfect party:
1. Who should be invited? The make up and size of the group will have an effect on the rest of the planning. If relatives such as dad, a favorite aunt or teenage siblings are to be included, it will influence the type of event. One, two and three-day adventure weekends can accommodate participants of all ages. The focus of the celebration should be on adventure and making memories.
2. When should the event take place? There are some factors to be considered should the party be a weekend adventure or be well separated from the wedding itself to give the wedding party from out of town time to return home, get back to work and regroup before leaving for the wedding. Parties with local participants can be held the weekend prior to the wedding or possibly the day before the wedding depending upon schedules. Some ideas

One Bachelorette Party Adventure Weekend for 6 people
BACHELOR(ETTE) PARTIES encompass adventures e.g., lake fishing, white water rafting, that are best done at certain times of the year. For a “destination” adventure, plans and reservations should be made early.
3. How long should the party last? Weekend events are becoming much more common. Since Wisconsin offers many options, some members of the group could elect to come for just 1 or 2 days if a longer adventure is planned. Everyone pays their own transportation costs and the weekend ground costs are usually split between all the participants so that the bride or groom is free.
4. How can the party be made “special”? This is where the Best Man and the Maid of Honor need to put on their thinking caps. What would make this a memorable occasion? Isn’t it more than consuming excess beverages and waking up the next day with a strange tattoo? Great memories are made of sharing an adventure, a special dinner, sitting around a campfire or having a spa treatment. Special t-shirts, with the date and guest of honor’s name, videos of the adventure or even an engraved memento to be presented at the wedding reception are now becoming more common bachelor(ette) party ideas.

Planning a memorable and exciting party can be complicated and overwhelming for the best man or maid of honor, even with ideas from the bride or groom. Utilizing an adventure resort can eliminate most of the effort and combine just the right ingredients to meet everyone’s expectations. Now that we understand what’s at stake and how to plan it, here are some ideas to get the ball rolling, most available right here in our own state of Wisconsin. Some properties offer a combination package of activities.

BRITISH VIRGIN
ISLANDS With beautiful tropical temperatures, steady warm breezes, and white sand beaches along calm blue waters, the British Virgin Islands are an idyllic location for a romantic honeymoon getaway. 
Take in the beauty of the four main islands - Tortola, Virgin Gorda, Anegada, and Jost van Dyke - or explore the other 50 smaller islands and cays that make up the BVI chain. The British Virgin Islands can fill your days with many adventures, especially for those who are sailorsat-heart and anyone who loves being in and on the water. You can enjoy sailing, snorkeling, diving, beach activities, fishing, kayaking, kite-boarding, surfing, wind-surfing, and even swimming with dolphins! Arrange a private tour to sail between the islands on a yacht - or charter a boat where you can spend the night onboard and island-hop as you please. Follow the path of Blackbeard as you explore the beautiful isles that inspired the book “Treasure Island”! If you are a sailing fan, be sure to book your trip well in advance to join in the festivities of the week-long Spring Regatta, which is held every year in early April. Races take place daily throughout the islands - with everything from dinghies to yachts

chasing the finish line. There are plenty of activities to participate in, including festivals and nightly parties. Tortola is the main capital island of the BVI, with a sheltered yacht-filled harbor, secluded bays with beautiful white sand beaches, the rainforests of Sage Mountain National Park, botanical gardens, and several historic sites that whisk you away to the past of the West Indies. Shop for local spices, rum, and art in the Main Street area of the capital city, Road Town, or tour a rum distillery. Catch the perfect wave at the mecca of surfing, Apple Bay Beach, then join in a Friday night fish fry with the locals, under the banyon trees. Share an intimate romantic 4-star dinner in a converted 17th century sugar mill. Stay at one of the seaside resorts or rent a private villa. The nature-lover will enjoy a “barefoot elegance” stay on the quiet island of Virgin Gorda. Hike trails lined by native plants. Discover the large granite boulders and exotic pools of the famous The Baths
Bitter End Yacht Club, Virgin Gorda
National Park on the North Shore. Or sit back and relax - hire a driver for a private guided tour of the island. Take a ferry to the all-inclusive Bitter End Yacht Club for your stay in a waterfront cottage and enjoy a cool beverage in the double hammock on your private wrap-around porch. Unwind in your own private villa rental, away from the hustle and bustle or escape to a beachfront cottage at the Rosewood Little Dix Bay and wander their garden paths to the unique cliffside spa. Anegada - which means “drowned land in Spanish - is the perfect spot for snorkeling and SCUBA diving. It is a small coral island, the only one in the volcanic chain of the Virgin Waterfront Cottage, Bitter End Yacht Club, Virgin Gorda
Islands, and is home to Horseshoe Reef, the third largest continuous reef in the Caribbean. Stingrays, needle fish, parrot fish, and more interesting species leisurely guide you through mazes, tunnels, and drops, as well as several shipwrecks from British warships to Spanish galleons. When you get out of the water, relax on the protected sandy beaches, keeping watch for exotic birds, wild orchids, rare rock iguanas, and other wildlife that is exclusive to the island. Visit Jost Van Dyke - named for a Dutch settler and former pirate - to explore sugar mill ruins and indulge in local culinary fares such as flying fish sandwiches, fresh lobster, and West Indian rotis or go to Club Paradise Outdoor Dining, Bitter End Yacht Club, Virgin Gorda
The Soggy Dollar Bar, Jost Van Dyke
Old Year’s Night Party, Jost Van Dyke
Fresh Lobster, Jost Van Dyke
to try their famous conch stew and barbecued ribs. The island is also known for their cocktails - especially “The Painkiller” at The Soggy Dollar Bar. Watch for whales and dolphins or check out the East End’s natural seaformed jacuzzi. If you can get tickets, ring in the New Year at Foxy’s Old Year’s Night party in Great Harbour, aboard one of the many docked yachts. This is definitely a trip that you will want to book through a travel agent. When you visit the British Virgin Islands, it is easiest to fly through San Juan, Puerto Rico, or St Thomas in the US Virgin Islands and take a charter flight, helicopter, or ferry transfer to the BVI island of your choice. Most of these transfers only operate during daylight hours, so your travel agent will make sure your resort or private villa rental has transfers available, if you happen to arrive later in the day. Your agent can also arrange for you to stay the first night in San Juan or St Thomas before making a connection the next day. Take advantage of their experience and industry connections when you set sail on this trip-of-a-lifetime!

Whether you get cozy in a lovely bed & breakfast or seaside resort, or head to the heart of downtown Vancouver to stay at The Fairmont Hotel Vancouver, they all offer guests the comforts of home. At The Fairmont, you can even bring your own pets or enjoy a walk with one of their Canine Ambassadors, Mavis and Beau, if you left your furry friends back home. Stroll the historic Gastown area or the waterfront of False Creek’s Granville Island and delight in their public markets, boutique shops, fine restaurants, and art studios. Head east to Stanley Park for its evergreen forest and scenic seawall. Discover the only authentic classical Chinese garden outside of China, the beautiful Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Garden, in the Chinatown area. Catch a Seabus to North Vancouver and take in the panoramic views of the city’s mountains on the way.
Skip over to Vancouver Island on a ferry and explore Victoria – the capital of British Columbia – by foot, by bike, or by car. It is reminiscent of the Britain Empire; its impressive historic Parliament Buildings sparkle with thousands of lights at night and the narrow streets are lined by old stone buildings and lampposts hung with baskets of overflowing flowers. Explore the Inner Harbour, tour the charming city in a horse-drawn carriage, or have afternoon tea at the Empress Hotel’s Tea Lobby. Visit the Royal British Columbia Museum, which houses many fascinating old totem poles, or see the modern-day carvers at work in Thunderbird Park next door. You might even stumble upon a castle in your explorations! Stop and smell the roses as you wander through the famous Butchart Gardens, about 14 miles north of Victoria. A National Historic Site of
Canada, it is one of the most breathtaking gardens, looking like it came straight out of a fairytale. Vibrant colors and smells of thousands of flowers will entice your senses, as butterflies delicately float around you. Enjoy a concert at the amphitheater on a lazy summer evening, marvel at the handcarved totem poles and carousel, or stay for the nightly fireworks display, as you lounge on the beautifully manicured lawn. Along the east coast of Vancouver Island, enjoy time at the Parksville and Qualicum Beaches or take an expedition to watch magnificent orcas. If you’re looking for grey whales, head to Pacific Rim National Park along the west coast, home to thousands of species of marine and wildlife. You can get here by land or by sea year-round. Stroll through MacMillan Provincial Park, home to massive 600-year-old Douglas firs. Take a train ride through the BC Forestry Discovery Centre in Duncan, also known as the “City of Totems” because you can take a walking tour throughout town to see 80 First Nations carvings from the aboriginal Cowichan tribe. If fishing lures you, the Campbell River is ranked one of the “salmon fishing capitals of the world” while the winter steelhead fishing is also renowned. Trout and bass can be found in the Vancouver Island lakes and streams as well.
While the courses are challenging, golfers might have trouble focusing on the ball when there are so many majestic views surrounding them. Play through on one of the many Vancouver championship golf courses, including one designed by Jack Nicklaus Nicklaus North in Whistler. During the winter, head north of Vancouver to Whistler Resort, consistently ranked the best ski resort in North America, with over 200 runs covering Blackcomb and Whistler Mountains and first-class hotels and restaurants. You can also enjoy glacier skiing and snowboarding on Blackcomb’s Horstman Glacier from June through October. Throughout the year, you can relax and take a gondola up the mountains to shop and watch entertaining street performers. When you’re not hitting the slopes, you can also take a Skyride tram up Grouse Mountain for a panoramic view of the city, a lumberjack show, or a visit to the Grizzly Bear Habitat. They also over zip-lining, paragliding, and helicopter tours, along with a variety of other attractions. Grab your passport, arrange the details of your trip with your travel agent, and get ready for a fantastic, beautiful journey through Vancouver, no matter what adventure you choose!

DOOR COUNTY
DOOR COUNTY With over 300 miles of shoreline and its quiet, wooded landscape dotted with quaint harbor side villages and historic lighthouses; Door County provides an ideal backdrop for a romantic getaway. Small wonder this Wisconsin peninsula was named one of the top ten travel destinations in North America by Money Magazine. The ten villages that make up Door County offer dozens of specialty shops, galleries and studios to browse through. Local restaurants feature everything from traditional Door County fish boils to candlelight gourmet dinners. Many newlyweds enjoy a winery tour or two at the five wineries in Door County. Others take in one of the many seasonal festivals or sample cultural offerings ranging from chamber music festivals and theater in the woods, to drive-in, double feature movies under the stars. Enjoy Door County’s shoreline scenes from an elegant concert or dinner cruise, a snug little paddleboat, a tranquil canoe, or even a picnic blanket on the shore. Others comb the waters of Lake Michigan in search of legendary shipwrecks. Even winter can’t put a damper on the romance in Door County, with its picturesque horse-drawn sleigh rides, serene crosscountry skiing, snow-laden trees and cozy inns. No matter what the season, budget or lifestyle, Door County is the perfect honeymoon destination. There is a magical lure to Door County that draws couples back again and again. Its closeness to home makes it ideal for romantic getaways long after the honeymoon is over, keeping the romantic spark alive for many years to come.

SHOPPING MADE EASY attending bridal shows You may find that the more time you can save in planning your wedding, the better. A Bridal Show can help. Here’s information and tips to help! Plan in Advance: Know your budget. Make a list of what you need most and what your budget will allow for each item and service.
Types of Bridal Shows: Small intimate shows average attendance is between 75-200 people and generally around 20-40 different vendors. These shows allow you much more time to talk with the individual wedding professionals, ask questions and get more in-depth answers. The second kind of show is much larger, averaging anywhere from 800 to 2000 attending and featuring anywhere from 100-250 different vendors. The biggest advantage to this kind of show is the wide range of vendors available and the beautiful displays for great wedding ideas. Pre-printed address labels: Most vendors will have some special drawing for gifts and prizes. Having these labels available will save you time and effort. Include your full name, address, phone number, wedding date and email address. Create a temporary wedding e-mail address: It’s free and can be deleted after your wedding date. Obviously you will receive solicitation after the show. 166 • PREMIER BRIDE www.pbnewi.com
This is a good thing. Quality vendors reaching out to provide specific wedding information and tips, along with any special offers they might have. Who should come along: Yes, your fiancé should come along, especially if it’s just the two of you. Decisions can be made on the spot and you both will have a good time! Or, bring a couple of friends, your mother or a whole entourage. Date or Calendar Book: It might be appropriate to schedule an appointment at another time for a more in-depth conversation. Usually any show “specials” will also apply if a date and time is made for a follow-up discussion. There are times when you might want to book something right at the show, such as limited availability and your date is still open. Or you might have already met with a vendor prior and are ready to make the commitment. Shoes: Wear comfortable shoes. The odds are you’ll be on your feet for quite a while. You don’t want to leave until you’re ready, not because your feet are too tired. Pressing onward when you’re feet hurt just isn’t any fun. Children: Avoid bringing small children to the show if possible. While you might not have a choice or it may be tempting to bring your flower girl along to see the neat wedding stuff, they are sure to tire more quickly then you. Prepare for information overload: When you find a vendor you are interested in, make a note about why. What struck you as appealing about this person? When you get home and you’re looking through 10 different photographers, your note may be the only thing you have to remember which ones you liked and why. Also, write down any good tips they might have given you.

Know your overall budget BEFORE you start planning your wedding - it’s one of the first issues you and your fiancé should discuss. Set your priorities based on what is most important to both of you and spend accordingly. For example, if the meal is the most important element of your wedding, you’ll want to allocate a greater portion of your budget to it.

SHARING THE COST
Groom’s wedding ring Wedding gift for groom Gifts for maid/matron of honor & bridesmaids Gift for parents (optional)
GROOM
BRIDE
It is no longer expected that wedding costs will be assigned according to tradition. Discuss your plan and budget with your families to determine whether to follow a traditional division of financial responsibility for the wedding costs. If circumstances don’t allow the families to follow tradition, the proper rationale in deciding who pays for what portion is basic: whoever is most willing and most able to pay for a wedding expense assumes responsibility for that expense.
