Reception What you need to know before booking your reception site

You’ve been pronounced “husband and wife,” so now it’s time to kick off those heels and celebrate! This is a time for you and your brand new husband to relax, mingle, dance, chat and thoroughly enjoy the company of your friends and loved ones. While finding the ideal reception location is one of the biggest and most important wedding-related tasks, have no fear…we’re here to help. 4 www.PremierBrideNY.com PREMIER BRIDE • 3

RECEPTION Below are six simple steps to finding the right reception site for your perfect day. Step 1: What to do first The biggest question regarding the reception is “where?” Before you can work on this question, however, you’ll need to know a couple of things: what style of wedding do you envision and how big? Obviously, a casual, relaxed summer afternoon reception would require a completely different reception site than a formal, elegant winter evening reception, so clarify the type of wedding (and the time of year) you both desire first. Once that’s been established, determine the rough guest list, including all interested parties, you and your groom, and each set of parents. Of course, you’ll also need to consider your budget, as this will have a great influence on the number of guests you can afford to have. Once you’ve made these critical decisions, it’s time to start looking for the ideal reception site. As with anything, the more time you have, the better. Some choice reception sites get booked one to two years in advance, particularly for prime dates. Step 2: Start the search Local bridal publications like Premier Bride, the Internet, bridal shows and married friends are all good sources of potential reception sites. If you have no idea where to hold your reception, try hotels, banquet halls, restaurants, community centers and country clubs. Other less obvious options are country inns, historic homes or mansions, city parks, college or university facilities, art galleries, museums and boats. Each location offers its own unique style and ambiance. 4 • PREMIER BRIDE www.PremierBrideNY.com

There are two basic types of reception facilities: on-site and off-site. Most on-site locations provide the majority of services you will need for your reception: catering, beverages, tables, chairs, tableware, linens and serving staff, making this a very convenient option. The facilities normally charge on a per person basis, and have a minimum guest requirement. Such locations include hotels, private clubs and restaurants. Off-site locations offer the use of the facility only, providing no other services. You supply nearly everything yourself, paying a flat fee for the use of the site. The nice thing about off-site locations is the freedom to do everything your own way, and more choices; although this can also mean more work! Narrow down your search by focusing on those sites that seem to best meet your needs, depending on your style, season and estimated guest count. Once you’ve selected some possibilities, it’s time to go on a road trip with your fiancé, maid of honor and/or Mom and check out the sites in person. Step 3: Evaluating reception sites Now the real work begins. Every site offers advantages and disadvantages, and your job is to sift through all of the features of each site, to find the best one for your wedding, all while keeping your budget in mind. Here are some factors to consider: Location. The reception site should be no more than a 30-minute drive away from the ceremony location. A longer drive than that is really asking too much of your guests! If the location is difficult to find, or will offer special challenges to get there (say, located near a football stadium that has a home game on your

RECEPTION wedding day), you should consider providing transportation for your guests from the ceremony site, and back to their cars after the reception. Size and layout. Will everything happen in one big room, or in separate rooms for the cocktail hour, dinner, dancing? Will it comfortably hold the number of tables you’ll need, and will everyone dine in the same room? Is there room for a band or DJ, and for cocktail hour musicians, if you’re having them? Privacy. If your venue does multiple events, find out if there are other bookings at the same time or on the same day as yours. If so, ensure that there will be adequate privacy and separation for your celebration. There should also be ample time in between events to allow your caterer or other

service people to set up or break down your party. Parking. Make sure there is convenient, well-lighted, ample parking for your guests, and if not, find out if valet service is available. Technical details. Whether you intend to have a DJ or a band, inquire about possible restrictions regarding the type, volume or duration of music. Be sure to confirm that there is an adequate power supply for speakers, mixers and amplifiers, or good acoustics for string and wind instruments. Some sites have built-in public-address systems which can be used for introductions and toasts. If your site of choice doesn’t offer this equipment, make sure your DJ or musicians can provide it. Room décor. Most sites offer a neutral background to work with, but make

Are there restrictions? • Is there ample parking for guests? • Do you provide a sound system, AV or PA system? • Are there any restrictions on decor, photography, videography, smoking or bar service? • Will you provide valet, coat check, restroom, bar and door attendants? • Is there an onsite caterer? If so, when and how much?

RECEPTION sure the flooring, wall coverings and colors will work with the style and season of your wedding. Services offered. Be clear, with each site visited, exactly what is and is not included. From catering and wait staff, to candles and chairs. Get those details up front. A note about outdoor receptions If you’re planning on outdoor reception, it’s critical to have a backup plan in case of inclement weather. Planning for an outdoor reception is usually much more work overall, because you have to provide for everything from the salad forks to the tents to the chairs, and you may need to change plans at the last minute due to the weather! For these reasons, it’s highly recommended that you use an

experienced wedding coordinator if you want an outdoor reception. This will ease your workload, and your stress, immensely. Down to details As with any wedding vendor, make sure that all details are outlined in writing, and use a credit card whenever possible when making payments so that you have more protection in the unlikely event of a problem. You should feel very comfortable with your contact person, and feel that they respond in a timely and efficient manner to your questions and requests. Visit premierbride.com’s online wedding planner for a comprehensive list of questions to ask potential reception sites, and other great wedding planning help.

SETTING THE MOOD WITH LIGHT an illuminating approach to décor

ardentphoto.com

Lighting is the most underrated part of planning a wedding today. Nothing sets the mood like a sparkling runway for your reception entrance, a dramatic backdrop to the cake and other focal points, or a sensual blaze that falls on your first dance. Details like bridesmaids’

shoes may go unnoticed, but the glow of your event will set the tone your guests will remember for years to come. Take this into consideration as you decide how to illuminate your wedding. First, decide on the mood you want to convey at different points throughout your day. If your ceremony is at a charming church and your reception at an upscale venue, the lighting is going to be quite different. Even during the reception, there are special moments you´ll want lit differently. Would you like a party-ready, flashbulb entrance, or maybe something quieter and romantic like a twinkle-lit archway? Do you want sensual, candle-lit tables, or something more bold and dramatic during dinner like a crystal-draped chandelier? Consider the mood you want, then work with a professional who will focus on practicalities such as making lighting affordable, photo-friendly, safe, easilycontrolled, and customized. One popular way to customize lighting is emblazoning monogrammed 8 • PREMIER BRIDE www.PremierBrideNY.com

spotlights on the wall or floor. Monograms can be as bold or subtle as you like and look best when there is a sharp contrast, such as a dramatic cobalt blue against a dark wall. Visit your site at the same time your event will be held to determine where and what type of lighting you would like to use. In a venue with drab walls, utilize backdrops to transform the room. Drape mesh overlay that’s in your color scheme from the ceiling to the floor as if it were a tent, then use twinkle lights, striking spotlights, crystals, or whimsical orbs to illuminate the backdrop and bring personality to the room. If your venue doesn’t give you that much freedom with lighting, work with an expert to create a beautifully lit focal point you can add to the room. It could be spotlights on a stunning cake, a flirty archway entrance, glitzy dance floor cover, or an eye-catching tree dazzled with crystals or small candles. You may want to have just a color wash and have the color change throughout the event, i.e., gold tones for the cocktail hour, blue while guests are eating, and orange and pink while the crowd is dancing. Candles are the most time-tested and romantic form of light. Make sure they´re in fire-proof and child-friendly places. The secret to candles is irregularity. Arrange different sizes and shapes along mismatched levels to add mystery and make the enlightened objects dance. Your lighting designer can help you figure out the best type of lighting for your budget. Whatever lighting you decide on, don’t underestimate the importance of the rays. They´ll be the backdrop of the pictures and memories you and your guests will remember as your perfect day.

Cater ing 7 STEPS to the perfect wedding cuisine

Perhaps the only part of a wedding that’s gotten a bad rap throughout the years is the food. Guests usually expect a dry chicken breast and some sticky rice pilaf, so spicing up the dinner and giving it a personal spin is the perfect way to make your wedding memorable and give your guests some fuel to dance the night away.4 www.PremierBrideNY.com PREMIER BRIDE • 11

CATERING Step 1: Start the search. As soon as you’ve selected your reception site, the catering search can begin. Some locations require that you use their in-house caterer or banquet department, which makes your choice fairly simple. These locations include hotels, country clubs and some of the more unusual facilities such as museums, boats or historical homes. If they allow an independent caterer, you may be asked to choose from a pre-approved list. If you can choose an outside vendor, you might be asked to do so from a preapproved list. If you’re able to select your own, narrow it down to three before you begin tasting. When you’re calling caterers, have your wedding date, time of day, approximate number of guests, meal style and formality. If you have general menu ideas or preferences, let them know. Step 2: your service style. Be ready to discuss your taste and budget in detail. Think about if you want a sit-down or buffet, then talk about extras, hors d’oeuvres during cocktails or a late-night snack? How about fruit or coffee with the cake? Step 3: Schedule a tasting. When you finally narrow down your list, it’s fun time – tasting! Don’t be shy. Speak up during tastings or ask if they’ll tweak something to your liking. This is your day and catering to your food needs and likes is their job. Step 4: Design the menu. Search through magazines, web sites and think about past weddings you’ve attended to clarify your likes and dislikes. Then, work closely with the caterer to craft a personal menu. Remember the 14 • PREMIER BRIDE www.PremierBrideNY.com

caterer has seen lots of weddings, so take their professional advice. Also, keep your guests in mind – do you have to accommodate for lots of children, or perhaps vegetarians? Step 5: Calculate the cost. Once you’ve selected a caterer, think business and cost. Your bill will probably be based on a per-person cost, and facilities with in-house departments might have a minimum charge or set-up fee. It’s common to add overage or gratuity. Your final guest count is usually required one week before the event, and the number of people for which you’ll be charged. There will probably be provisions for addons, and discuss providing meals for extra personnel like the photographer. Get specifics if linens, plates, glasses, crystal and silverware are included. Step 6: Plan the wait staff. Once the menu is finalized, the next step is determining the number of wait staff you will need to serve your feast and keep your reception running smoothly. Your caterer will give you a better idea, but a general guideline is one server per 10 to 12 guests for a sit-down dinner. A bar will require more. Step 7: Finalize the details, in writing. Don’t sign a contract without this information: date, time, address of the site, food items by course, number of guests covered, provisions for special meals, time of cocktail hour and meal, contact people, number of servers, linens, beverages and bar guidelines, terms of payment and liability insurance. There will probably be an advance deposit when you sign the contract, and don’t forget to check on the cancellation policy.

BRIDAL BLOOMS: design a beautiful wedding with flowers The romantic link between weddings and flowers dates back to ancient civilizations where garlands of flowers, leaves and vines were worn or carried by young brides to symbolize their beauty and innocence. Wedding flowers have since evolved from simple hand-held bouquets to vibrantly artistic creations used to set the mood and theme for the entire celebration.4 www.PremierBrideNY.com PREMIER BRIDE • 23

Flowers have adorned weddings for hundreds of years and for good reason: they are beautiful! Breathtaking bouquets, gorgeous centerpieces, fresh boutonnieres...colorful gifts from nature will give you and your guests a visual feast. They set the mood and theme for the entire celebration, so be sure to give this area some time. It is recommended to book your florist 8-10 months in advance if possible. WHERE TO START Your research will start from the first bridal magazine you open to the first bridal website you visit. Collect photos, color sample and anything else you want to share with your florist. Create a Pinterest board to save your ideas. Also, establish a clear list of anything you definitely don’t like. Determine your floral budget. FINDING A FABULOUS FLORIST Find a potential florist in a local print publication such as this one, at bridal shows or on-line. Select up to four and meet with them in person. Interviewing more than this could easily get overwhelming! Your goal is to find someone who has a style that you love, a personality that you mesh with, and who is also an organized professional. Bring the following items with you when you meet your florist for your first big planning meeting: a photo of your wedding dress. This will influence the style of your event. Is it streamlined, modern and simple or heavily beaded, traditional and ornate? Know your wedding colors, ceremony and reception locations. Share the images you like and dislike and bring fabric swatches of your bridesmaids’ dresses and any other wedding color.

FLOWERS One more thing to share with your florist is your budget amount! It’s quite critical that you share this with your designer, so they can meet your needs at a price you can afford. Their knowledge will put it all together. What flowers hold up beautifully in the sun while which are better suited for indoors. For example, it probably would not be wise to select gardenias if you are planning an outdoor wedding at midday in June. Gardenias are as delicate as they are beautiful and under such conditions they would wilt long before the minister says, “you may kiss the bride.” FOR YOU AND YOUR WEDDING PARTY The first item of consideration will be the bridal bouquet, since all other floral arrangement will take their cue Working with our wedding specialists, Working with our youwedding can be specialists, confident be confident youyou arecan choosing from youwidest are choosing from the range of the widestRoses, range of traditional traditional Roses, Lilies and Peonies, Lilies Peonies, or the and unusual or the unusual delicate Gardenias, delicate Gardenias, Ranunculuses, Ranunculuses, Sweetpea, Lily ofSweetpea, the Valley, Lily of the Valley, Stephanotis Stephanotis and Orchids and Orchids

FLOWERS filled with cut flowers; tower candelabras; topiaries; or simple rose petals scattered around flickering candles. Use your imagination to design one-of-a-kind centerpieces that express your style. Keep in mind that the height of the arrangements should not interfere with the ability of guests to converse with each other. They should either be low enough to talk over or high enough to talk under. Placing the wedding party’s bouquets at equal intervals at the head table also provides excellent decoration. Running greenery laced with flowers across the length of the head table is another option. You might consider using this decoration for the cake table as well. If your budget allows, consider adding a few finishing touches here and there, such as flower petals on serving trays 28 • PREMIER BRIDE www.PremierBrideNY.com

or garlands along the front of the buffet tables. You can also fill in a large room with potted ferns or ficus trees placed strategically and wrapped with strands of small white lights. Share all of your ideas with your floral designer, who can help you refine them to create a lavish and memorable impression that won’t soon be forgotten by you or your guest. SEASONAL CONSIDERATIONS For everything there is a season and flowers are no exception. One of the most important considerations in selecting your wedding day flowers will be the season in which you intend to wed. You will find that flowers in bloom during the month of your wedding will be more available and less costly than selections that are out of season and they will also last longer.

FLOWERS A major seasonal consideration is the holiday since certain flora will significantly increase in price. Here are some popular flowers and the best season to choose them in order to help you create beautiful bouquets and arrangements for your wedding. Winter: Amaryllis, Casablanca lily, freesia, Gerber daisy, heather holly (ilex), narcissus, poinsettia, rose, stephanotis. Summer: Anemone, azalea, calla lily, camellia, daffodil, French tulip, hyacinth, hydrangea, jasmine, lilac, lily of the valley, mimosa, pansy, peony, primrose, ranunculus, sweet pea, tulip, violet. Fall: Celosia (cockscomb) Chinese lantern, chrysanthemum, crosnia, dahlia, statice, yarrow (in California, most summer flowers are also available in the fall).

Year-Round: Baby’s breath, carnation, cattleman, chrysanthemum, cymbidium orchid, daisy, dendroblum orchid, freesia, gardenia, Gerber daisy, gladiolus, iris, lilies, protea, roses, September aster, snapdragon, stephanotis, tuberoses. Roses are produced in three grades: Select, Extra Fancy and Fancy. Select roses are top quality and last the longest. A florist rarely deals with Fancy roses, found mostly in supermarkets, as they tend to wilt rapidly. Traditional bouquets are all white and can combine a range of blossoms that are unique in shape and size. Colored blossoms are definitely “in” for bridal bouquets as well as ceremony and reception arrangement. From exotic tropical stems to gorgeous, scented garden herbs, the selections and combinations are virtually endless.

8 FUN FLORAL TRENDS for your wedding #1 – Bold, creative color Make a statement with vivid, dramatic color in your wedding flowers - royal blue-purple, dark lilac, burnt orange or bright yellow-green. Focus on just one color and include a variety of shades and textures, or consider unusual, striking color combinations, such as mint green with cherry red, or deep purples with vibrant shades of orange. #2 – For chocolate lovers Warm chocolate brown is a beautiful color for weddings, and you CAN include it in your bouquets and centerpieces. Use brown Leonidas roses, terra-cotta roses, chocolate cosmos or hypericum berries. Or, use a flower in another wedding color (pale blush pink) with a brown center, such as mini Gerbera daisies. #3 – Wrap it up For your centerpieces and bouquet stems, there’s no limit to the ways you can creatively envelope them: velvet or metallic ribbon, tree bark, rustic burlap or twine, glittery wire, satin, silk or other fabric, banana leaves or anything else you can think of! #4 – Black, white and red all over With your white dress and the black tuxes, any and all shades of red are the perfect accompaniment. There’s always the classic red rose, but other beautiful, trendsetting red flowers are dahlias, tulips, Gerbera daisies, Calla lilies, red freesia and berries. A bouquet with a variety of reds from pale pink to deep red would be unique and gorgeous. A skilled floral designer will be able to put the right shades together.

8 FUN FLORAL TRENDS #5 – Variety is the spice of life Really, there’s no rule that says all bridesmaids’ bouquets or all centerpieces have to be identical. Mix it up! While they should all look like they belong to the same wedding, there’s no reason you can’t alter the arrangements to create an interesting mix of floral design. #6 – Add a little sparkle Think outside the box, or in this case, the bride, when it comes to jewelry and let your bouquets wear some too! Add a little sparkle to the center of your Calla lilies, some beaded wire around your bouquet stems, or a family heirloom, such as pearls, that you prefer not to wear, but would love to include, to your bridal bouquet.

#7 – Beautiful Brooch Bouquets Creating a bouquet out of a meaningful collection of brooches, pins, rings, earrings, and charms from friends and family members to create a nontraditional bouquet is becoming increasingly popular for nostalgic brides who value sentiment over spray roses. #8 – Get fruity! Brides looking for something fun and interesting have started incorporating colorful produce into their centerpieces. The pigments of fruits naturally complement flowers like a bright yellow lemon next to a full chrysanthemum or a beautiful apple next to a bright red rose. You can also consider cutting fruit up and using it as accents in drinks and as decoration.

Flowers SELECTING FLOWERS:

ask the right questions Florists vary widely on the wedding day services they provide – some simply drop the flowers off, others spend quite a bit of time decorating your ceremony and reception sites. Be clear ahead of time about what is, and what isn’t included.

THEknowing PERFECT CAKE the basics to make decisions As one of the most important symbols of your wedding you want your wedding cake to be perfect right? Here are some guidelines and questions to help you in your search for the perfect cake: Research local bakeries. Find a baker or pastry chef near you if you don’t already have a preferred bakery. A good bakery should provide you with a portfolio of their work so you can see the baker’s style as well as what they’re able to offer. Decide your cake decor. If you are someone who prefers real flowers on your cake to edible gum paste, fondant, buttercream, or marzipan roses, make sure you tell the baker and make sure you call the florist before going to the bakery. Make sure your florist can get the flowers to the bakery or reception site to help assemble the cake. Be sure to ask the florist if the flowers you want added to your cake are edible. Often brides fall in love with a certain flower not realizing they are poisonous. No one needs to go to the ER on your wedding day! If you still want that type of flower but know that it is poisonous, ask your baker if they can make them for your cake. Book a tasting: When you have your bakery narrowed down book a tasting. This will give you the opportunity to meet with the baker/pastry chef as well as sample their products. Come hungry! Some bakeries will even make custom flavored icings or cakes if you ask them. If you are dealing with a pastry chef this is especially true. Pastry chefs are also known to soak their cakes in simple syrup to make them moister. If you want a liquor or flavoring added to a cake make sure you ask! If you have pictures of what you like. Actually SHOWING the baker what you like will help them better 32 • PREMIER BRIDE www.PremierBrideNY.com

understand what you envision. Circle, highlight, point arrows, make notes, do anything to help them understand your vision. They’ll appreciate it! Decide what kind of cake. Decide on the flavors, design, delivery date, and type of cake you will be getting. And settle on size and cost. Some couples now prefer what is called a dummy cake to a whole cake. A dummy cake is a cake that is made and designed like a real wedding cake but only has one slice of cake inside for the bride and groom slicing. The rest is usually Styrofoam. People tend to choose this option paired with sheet cakes to ensure that every guest will have equal amounts of cake. Also know that some venues and caterers charge a slicing fee. This ensures everyone gets an equal portion and to stretch the cake if necessary. Formulate that into your budget. Be prepared to sign a contract. This protects you and the baker. The contract outlines what you can expect to receive from your baker, what deposit is required, and assures that you will be getting the right cake based on what you have discussed. It also means that if for any reason your wedding is cancelled you more than likely will not be getting a refund. After all, they put days, hours, materials, and lots of manpower into making your cake! Don’t be scared just be prepared. Many times if you get two cakes from the baker, the groom’s cake, they will work with you on the pricing of both. This is dependent on the baker, their reputation and the number of cakes they prepare each weekend. Now that you are up to date on your wedding cake knowledge you can choose a cake confidently!

Choose a photographer whose style matches you as a couple… Formal or traditional: Posed, color photos of you, the groom, your respective families, and the wedding party; all the classic moments will be captured. Photojournalistic: Shot like a news event, capturing hundreds of candid moments and real emotions; more black and white photos for a timeless feel. PHOTOGRAPHY RESEARCH PHOTOGRAPHERS Once you’ve established your style, it’s time to shop around. Collect referrals from friends, review wedding resources like Premier Bride, and scope out local photographers’ websites and blogs. Make a short list of potential photographers that specialize in the style you desire – and suit your budget. Then set up a consultation. EVALUATE YOUR OPTIONS When at a photography consultation, ask yourself: Do you like their work? Make sure you see examples of individual photos and complete wedding albums so you know what to expect in the end. Some larger studios employ more than one photographer; find out exactly who will be shooting your wedding. Do your personalities mesh? Of all your wedding vendors, the photographer is the one you’ll be working with most closely on your big day; it’s important that your personalities click. Are you staying within your budget? It’s disappointing to fall in love with a photographer’s work only to later discover their rates exceed your spending allowance. Do your best to meet only with photographers you can afford. WHAT’S INCLUDED IN THE PACKAGE Most photographers offer “a la carte” or custom packages to meet your individual needs – just be sure to ask for specifics. Here are some examples of items that might interest you. Bride & Groom’s Album: Varies in size, color, quality, and price; be sure to compare the size and photo quantity that various photographers offer. Parents’ Albums: These will include prints that have been specially selected 40 • PREMIER BRIDE www.PremierBrideNY.com

to create a custom photo book for each family. Prints: Don’t underestimate how many extra prints you might want, as this will definitely impact your budget. Proofs: Ask your photographer how many proofs you will get and in what format. ASK ABOUT THE EXTRAS Engagement photos: Many photographers offer engagement shoots as part of the package. These photos are more laid-back and candid, so play up your personalities. Photobooth: One of the most popular trends in wedding photography. Opt for color or black and white prints and play with props like feather boas, hats, and mustaches. Added bonus: Most photobooths print two sets of pictures. Guests can keep one as a souvenir and add the other to your guest book – you’ll end up with a collection of photos and scribbled well-wishes to enjoy for years to come! While many photographers offer photobooths, there are also photobooth companies that specialize in this service and may have different packages depending upon what you want. Fun photos: Let your personality shine through. Do you and your fiancé love ice cream? Take pictures at your local creamery (just don’t spill on the dress!). Do you love board games? Spell out “LOVE” with scrabble pieces, using your engagement ring for the “O.” The bottom line: infuse your personalities wherever possible. Gowns

TIPS AND GUIDELINES to finding the gown of your dreams Most girls are guilty of daydreaming about their wedding dress. We’re constantly bombarded with movies, TV, and photos of picture-perfect, iconic brides — just think of the Kate Middleton effect! And what makes these brides iconic? The dress. Although finding the right dress for your wedding day isn’t as easy as daydreaming, we’re here to help with these bridal gown basics. 4 www.PremierBrideNY.com PREMIER BRIDE • 43

GOWNS GOWN STYLES Bridal attire ranges from extravagant princess gowns to tailored suits. That’s right — there’s no rule that says a bride must wear a fancy gown. This is the age when brides dress for their own comfort level and personal style, only more polished. Even so, most brides stick with a dress. The strapless style still reigns supreme, but the market has expanded in recent years to include gowns with all manner of straps, sleeves, and accessories. You’ll see many dresses that are modest in the front and dramatic in the back. Dresses are also belted, have convertible or removable cap sleeves, and come in an array of bold and muted colors in addition to just white. Some brides are even wearing more than one dress, such as a traditional gown for the ceremony and a short dress for the reception, so they can comfortably dance the night away. FABRIC & AFFORDABILITY Satin, tulle, and lace are the most commonly used fabrics for wedding gowns, and the type of fabric you choose will greatly affect the price. If you’re dreaming of intricate, handstitched, Italian lace with delicate beading, the cost is going to rise. But these days it’s entirely possible to find designers that create gorgeous gowns with price points that suit the mainstream bride. The professionals at your local bridal salon will be able to help you determine which fabric and details fit within your budget. STARTING THE SEARCH Start by gathering ideas: Bridal magazines, designer websites, and Pinterest are a great source as you 44 • PREMIER BRIDE www.PremierBrideNY.com

start the hunt for your wedding dress. Compile the styles you like that suit the mood of your wedding. For example, is your wedding venue a rustic lodge, classic ballroom, or ultra-modern loft? Ask yourself: What kind of dress makes sense for the activities of the day? Also think about what kind of dress makes sense for you. Weddings are no longer strictly adhering to tradition, and brides are embracing this new mainstream by crafting weddings that are truly a reflection of themselves — and that goes for bridal style, too. If you’re not into princess gowns, wear a white jumpsuit and sassy heels. If your wedding’s on a beach, don a kneelength sheath and comfy sandals. Keep your vision of your true self in mind as you search for ideas. Then make an appointment at your local bridal salon. Invite a trusted team of family and friends to join you. You don’t need an army — just a few close people you can count on to tell you the truth (sadly, not all gowns will be figure-flattering). Share your ideas for the type of gown you want with the professionals at the bridal salon, but keep an open mind. Ideally you should start visiting salons anywhere from nine months to a year before your wedding to allow enough time. If you’re in a rush (6 months or less), tell your consultant immediately. SHAPES & SIZES Remember that no two brides are shaped alike, therefore no dress will ever accent your silhouette exactly the same way it does another bride’s body. When the time comes to try on gowns, explore a myriad of styles and cuts to figure out what works for you — you might be surprised! Note that bridal

www.PremierBrideNY.com PREMIER BRIDE • 45

GOWNS salons often carry only one sample size of each gown; try on these gowns even if they’re not your size — consultants are there to help you get in and out of sample sizes. If you’re nervous about the sizes available at your local bridal salon, give them a call. Talking to a representative will ease your mind, and you’ll find that whether you’re fullfigured or very petite, there have never been more options to accommodate brides of all shapes and sizes. TRYING ON DRESSES Don’t be afraid to think outside the box and try on dresses that aren’t necessarily in your comfort zone. You never know what a gown will really look like until you try it on, and lots of brides end up choosing a style of gown they never even dreamed of. Remember that the gowns at salons are just samples, so the size won’t be tailored to you, and most dresses can be ordered in various shades of white. So just because you’re not crazy about that big blush dress on the hanger, try it anyway! What do you have to lose? WORKING WITH A CONSULTANT While at the salon, make sure to take advantage of your professional consultant’s knowledge and expertise. A good bridal consultant should steer you in the right direction, so communicate your likes, dislikes, wants, and needs as much as possible. It’s the consultant’s job to handle every step of your salon experience, including showing you every option within your price range. They can also coordinate alterations and other practical matters once you’ve found “the one.” If you’re not in sync with the consultant you’ve been dealt, don’t 46 • PREMIER BRIDE www.PremierBrideNY.com

hesitate to ask to work with a different representative; every bridal salon’s goal is to give you an enjoyable experience. ALTERATIONS & FITTINGS Deciding on a gown is a major hurdle, but that’s not the end of the wedding dress “to do” list. There are usually as many as four fittings that follow saying “yes” to the dress. Here are some tips for making this process run as smoothly as possible: First, give yourself and the tailor sufficient time. If you’re in a rush, this is when working with a bridal salon can really help; it’s usually their job to make sure alterations run smoothly and on time. Second, choose a dress that’s very close to your actual size. Most gowns can’t be changed by more than two sizes, up or down. Buy a dress that fits the biggest part of you, not the smallest part; it’s easier to take a dress in to hug your figure than it is to let it out. If you’re not working with a salon and have to find your own tailor, choose a tailor that has a great reputation, not the lowest rate. When the time comes for your first fitting, make sure you’re sporting the same undergarments and shoes that you’ll be wearing on your wedding day. Even the slightest tweak in bra padding or heel height can change the way a dress hangs and where the hem falls. As you’re working with the tailor, trust that they know what they’re doing. You may ask them to make one alteration, and they might suggest an alternate way to achieve that look, or advise against it altogether. Know when to take a deep breath and leave certain decisions to the professionals — your stress levels will thank you for it.

THE WELL SUITED GROOM everything you need to know

Determining the level of formality you’d like in your wedding will help determine your groom’s wedding attire.

The first order of business is to evaluate how formal your wedding will be. This depends on the time of day of the wedding, the location, but most of all, on you and your fiancé. The degree of formality will affect the wedding attire. In warm weather, think lighter colors (such as tan and white), and in cool weather think darker colors (navy and charcoal.) Grey would likely work anytime, and black is always classic and appropriate. Ties, vests and cummerbunds can match the wedding colors, or compliment them with colors such as white, ivory, silver, grey or black. If the bridal gown is ivory, the men should wear ivory shirts, not white, to compliment her. Semiformal and formal weddings have plenty of options: a high quality, singleor double-breasted men’s suit in black, dark charcoal or navy with a Windsor knotted tie in white, ivory, navy, silver or black is a less formal option. It’s also a suit you could wear over and over again, making it a good investment. For a more formal look than that, consider a tuxedo with a single- or double-breasted dinner jacket, a white or ivory pointed-collar shirt, a vest or cummerbund and either a bow tie or a four-in-hand tie (a “fancy” knotted necktie). A very formal wedding, called “white tie,” calls for the traditional black tuxedo with tails, a vest, a white winged-color shirt and a bow tie. If you 64 • PREMIER BRIDE www.PremierBrideNY.com

can envision a symphony conductor’s attire, this is “white tie.” SHOPPING TIPS • When the men visit their formalwear shop they should have a firm idea of the women’s wedding attire, and bring fabric or color swatches from the bridesmaids’ gowns. Pictures from the pages of wedding and men’s magazines of the preferred formalwear styles would also be helpful in the decision-making process. • The groom and groomsmen should reserve their rentals at least three months in advance of the wedding. Final measurements should be taken about three weeks before the ceremony; however, be sure to come back a few days before the wedding for last-minute alterations. • Out-of-town groomsmen can get measured at any formalwear store or local tailor’s near them, and send their measurements to the groom or to your formalwear store. • Someone should be designated to return all formalwear to the store on time in order to avoid late fees, which can get quite expensive adding up the per day, per outfit costs. • Finally, it’s critical to get a perfect fit – even the best outfit won’t look good if the fit isn’t right. Rely on the expertise of your formalwear consultant.

Music

WEDDING MUSIC: the sound of romance

Nothing sets the wedding mood quite like music. From stirring melodies at the ceremony, to easy background tunes at cocktail hour, to up-tempo beats that get the dance party started, your choices in music are the soundtrack to your special day.

CEREMONY MUSIC When weighing your options for ceremony musicians, consider your vision (instrumental or vocalist) and your wedding’s style and venue. Think back to past weddings you’ve attended: What did you like about the music for each ceremony? What didn’t work so well? Once you and your fiancé have some ideas in mind, check out local musicians. Visit bridal shows, search online, or ask for referrals from recently married friends or your ceremony officiant; you could also work with an experienced talent or booking agency. Narrow down your options, then arrange to hear them live. COCKTAILS AND DINNER MUSIC Conversation is key during cocktails and dinner, so the tunes should set the mood, but not intrude. If you decide on live music, try chamber music, classical or acoustic guitar, a jazz ensemble, or a pianist. If you go with your reception’s DJ or band, make sure they keep it on the softer side. RECEPTION AND DANCING MUSIC Let’s face it: this is a critical decision that can make or break an entire wedding, in the eyes of the guests. First, ask yourself: Band or DJ? Live music gives the evening a sort of festive energy and is a wonderful option if your budget allows. The key is finding a band that caters to weddings. These 66 • PREMIER BRIDE www.PremierBrideNY.com

musicians offer versatility and will appeal to guests of all ages. A DJ will be more cost-effective and offer an almost infinite variety of music – truly something for everyone. Decide on the details ahead of time; make a “do not play” list of any songs you simply can’t stand and a “must play” list of songs you don’t want to miss. The golden rule of reception music: Whether band or DJ, make sure they play a little something for everyone. THE NITTY GRITTY For the reception… Consider your site and how this might impact your choice in entertainment. Communicate with your site manager so you’re aware of any restrictions – and so that they’re aware of your plans ahead of time. Communicate with your band or DJ so that they can familiarize themselves with the space, its limitations, and other important technical details. In general… As with other wedding vendors, make sure the ins and outs of your agreement with your musicians is very clear and in writing. This includes payment, start and end times, fees for playing overtime, etc. Once you’ve done your homework, hired musicians for each stage of your wedding day, and worked out the details, you can rest easy. That is, until it’s time to start practicing your dance moves…

BEGINNING IN STEP dance lessons A romantic way to prepare for a lifetime of waltzing together is to take dance lessons before your wedding. You and your partner will be the center of attention on the dance floor during your special day, but if that isn’t incentive enough, consider the additional closeness the two of you can develop by sharing a wedding-related activity that doesn’t involve appointments and interviews. You’ll be asked before you begin your lessons about the kinds of dance steps you’d like to learn. Ambitious though you may be, learning too many steps too soon may result in frustration if you feel you’re not mastering anything. What you admire about other dancers is how well they move together, not the numbers of patterns they do. 68 • PREMIER BRIDE www.PremierBrideNY.com

You’re probably not used to being taught things as a couple, and you may want to help the instructor along by correcting your partner. Don’t. Let the instructor do the teaching. Your input can be distracting and disruptive, both for the instructor and your partner. Cliché though it may be, dance instructors say men typically progress more slowly than their female partners, who tend to feel movements more and master steps quicker. Be patient with him. It will be appreciated, and the resulting cooperation will get the two of you moving together more quickly. Get the most from your dance lessons by taking them as close together as you can, and in conjunction with group lessons and practice sessions. The result will be speedy progress and increased confidence and enjoyment.

Beauty THE ART of looking your best

It’s the big day: All eyes are on you and everyone wants to take your picture. The dress is perfect and you just know the groom’s jaw is going to drop. Combine your own unique sense of style with a few tricks of the beauty trade and you’ll be ready for adoring gazes and photos galore. 4 70 • PREMIER BRIDE www.PremierBrideNY.com

BEAUTY From makeup to hair to nails, every blushing bride (and mother-of-thebride!) wants to look her absolute best on her wedding day. Follow our advice, and you’ll be well on your way to showing off your most beautiful self. Get glowing. Now is a great time to focus on healthy, glowing skin. If you’re concerned about the health and appearance of your skin, consider a visit to a dermatologist (for bigger problems) or an aesthetician (for minor issues). Depending on the severity of your skin problems, start six to 12 months before your wedding day so you have time to treat, heal, and achieve good results. Facials are a must for all skin types. Regular treatments result in refined pores, smoother facial lines, healed blemishes, and a more radiant complexion. For full-body beautification, waxing is a good place to start. Your legs will be smooth and free of razor stubble. To take beautification to the next level, consider Botox, injection therapy, and face or body tightening. These treatments are designed to help you look and feel your best, without the pain and recovery time of surgical procedures. Hair. When choosing a hairstyle, consider: your gown, the formality of your wedding, your personal style, your hair type and texture, and your face shape. An up-do is a classic way to go and is ideal for showing off a dramatic neckline. If you’re a trendy girl, try braids, hair extensions, or a carefree bohemian look. Just be cautious of overly-trendy styles. Consult your hair stylist four to six weeks before the wedding to find the right look for you. In the end, the most important thing is finding a hairstyle that looks like you. 72 • PREMIER BRIDE www.PremierBrideNY.com

Makeup musts. Whether you hire a pro to do your makeup or do it yourself, do a trial run before the wedding. Get feedback from close friends and family, take photos, and evaluate: Do you like what you see? What would you change? How well does the makeup last? Some musts. Have fun with your makeup (try fake eyelashes, defined brows, or a bold lip), but make sure you look like you. Use a primer under your foundation, lipstick, and eye shadow so that it lasts longer. Wear waterproof mascara to fend off any tears of joy. Some must not’s. Don’t go too light with your makeup; you’ll look washed out in photos. Don’t go too dark; it will be distracting. Don’t overdo the blush. You’ll be emotional, happy, and busy, a recipe for your own natural color. Nails and brows. Regular manicures in the one or two months before your wedding day will get your nails in perfect shape. Avoid really trendy nail polish colors; play it safe and go with a classic, neutral color. Have your eyebrows professionally shaped at least two weeks before the wedding to avoid skin irritation. OUR BEST BEAUTY ADVICE Strongly consider using beauty professionals for your wedding day hair, makeup, and nails. A true makeup artist will know trade secrets not only for fashioning a longer-lasting look, but also for accentuating your features. A great hair stylist can help you create a look that complements your features and lasts all night. When you go pro, the end result is a relaxed, picture-perfect bride. Lastly, never forget a bride’s best accessory: her smile!

Arthur Avenue “LITTLE ITALY IN THE BRONX”

OUR NEIGHBORHOODS: Arthur Avenue, Bronx

New York City is filled with wonderful neighborhoods that are still reminiscent of an era gone by. Our recent visit to the Arthur Avenue section of the Bronx was an exhilarating journey to Italy. This section of the Bronx is known as “Little Italy in the Bronx”, and as you stroll along the street you can’t help but want to walk into every little storefront. We also visited the historic Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church recently celebrated their 100 year anniversary. We are told that people travel from all over to be married in this historic church. The story of the parish travels back to 1906, just a few years after the turn of the century when this area was still a rural hamlet. This was when Italian immigrants were settling by the hundreds and thousands to raise their families. These families brought with them a strong cultural heritage from their beloved motherland and a strong Catholic faith. For almost a century this church has seen the Pontificates of eight popes, the leadership of six Cardinal Archbishops of 74 • PREMIER BRIDE www.PremierBrideNY.com

New York and the service of eight Pastors working with hosts of dedicated selfsacrificing priests. Mount Carmel Church stands proudly and invulnerable like a mighty fortress, and continues to be the source, the sign and the pivot of vitality, unity, strength and stability of this community. This small beginning as a basement church has grown through the years originally nurtured by the zeal and love of its founders, Fr. Burke and saintly Fr. Cafuzzi. Today the parish continues to serve the Italian community of the Bronx and welcomes the new immigrants from Latin America and serves them with the same devotion and love that this church was built on. Couples that desire to be married in this church need to personally visit the church to make the necessary arrangements with one of the priests at least six months prior to to the wedding.

PERSONALIZED VOWS expressing it in your own way

capturingyourday.com

Depending on your religion you might decide to forget about tradition and create your own wedding vows for your big day. The sky is really the limit in this case and there is no better way to begin your life together than to take the time to really let one another know how you feel.

If you do decide that you want to write your own vows meet with the officiant to discuss what you want to do. When you do personalize your wedding vows think about those things that are really important to you such as the meaning of marriage, why you are planning to spend your life together and how you will make this arrangement work for better or worse. Too many times nowadays couples don’t realize that marriage is supposed to be a lasting bond of togetherness through the good and the bad times. No matter how far astray you want your wedding vows to go it might be a good idea to start with the familiar. There is definitely something beautiful about the words in a wedding ceremony and perhaps just adding a few of your own personalized additions throughout 76 • PREMIER BRIDE www.PremierBrideNY.com

the wedding is all that will be needed to add that special touch. Of course, you want to make sure that you and your fiancé are in agreement when it comes to changing the vows during the wedding. Talk about the things that make your life together unique and different and the plans you have for your future. One really special way to say “I love you” is to remember why you fell in love in the first place. Often during the hassles of the wedding this is easy to forget. Perhaps bringing it all back together in front of your family and friends will make a bond that will never be broken. Talk about the experiences you have shared together while making memories. These are often very important moments frozen in time and will also help to build your future as you look ahead at what makes your marriage so important to both of you. What do you want for your future? This will be a good start as to what you want to promise each other as you stand before God and man becoming man and wife. If each of you write your own vows, then the other should only see/hear them at the ceremony, not before. If you and your fiancé have an eclectic style or personality then by all means let that come out in your personalized vows. In the long run it might make it easier for you to express your real feelings anyway. This is not the time to go for laughs. Something heartfelt with a little humor or wit could work well, but going for laughs is better left for the reception. When you’re saying your vows, look directly into your betroth’s eyes.

FUN WITH PHOTO BOOTHS capturing the excitement and emotion of your guests

A wedding is just one day, so everyone knows photos are a great way of capturing the excitement and emotion for years to come. The professional photographer usually does a great job of snapping the couple, but pics of your friends and family members celebrating with you will be great mementos going forward. In the past, couples used to leave disposable cameras at tables for guests to point and shoot, but the chance in finding a gem amongst those blurry, lowquality shots is rare, especially when kids get their hands on them. Plus, the cost of developing film is going up steadily. Instead, a fun, plucky alternative can be to get a photo booth. Photo booth rentals are becoming popular at wedding receptions –not only do you get too see everyone in their finest for your big day, but they can take home a quality memory from the wedding. Photo booth rentals are different in size and output. Some give guests prints of their pictures right away, in the traditional photo booth setting, with the four black and white prints on one single strand. This is a great way to give guests a souvenir right away, especially because it’s a unique type of print. Other photo booths just continuously shoot throughout the night, and provide the couple with a digital record of all the shots taken. Then, guests could go to an online database to choose which photos they want and print them at their own convenience. The newest innovation in photo booths is a flip book, which is more interactive and involves a true keepsake 78 • PREMIER BRIDE www.PremierBrideNY.com

PHOTO BOOTHS for everyone. With a flip book, a representative from the company is on hand, acting as kind of a mini-director encouraging guests to perform skits or don playful costumes. At the end, it’s put together into a video and everyone receives a copy. One fun way to really spice up the photos is to supply props like goofy hats, accessories, or fake mustaches for guests to poke around with. A chalkboard or dry erase board is also fun, so family and friends can doodle a special message or sentiment and capture it on film. A giant, decorative frame is another fun prop to create the picture-within-a-picture look. When deciding on a rental, choose one where you can really customize it, if you’d like. You could ask for the background to be matching the colors of the wedding, or add your names or the date to a sign at the top of the photo. But no matter how basic it is, your family and loved ones smiling faces will make it a truly personal memory!

DESTINATION WEDDINGS is it right for you? More and more couples are planning destination weddings and combining their wedding celebration and honeymoon. Here are a few reasons why. For anyone with a sense of adventure, there is no limit to the fun you can have when you choose a destination wedding. That’s why many brides and grooms are no longer taking the traditional church route, but instead looking for the perfect foreign country, distant mountain or secluded beach. From riding a camel across the desert to exchanging vows underwater in Mauritius, anything is possible with a destination wedding. One reason that so many couples are choosing destination weddings nowadays is because brides are busy. 80 • PREMIER BRIDE www.PremierBrideNY.com

Most destination wedding resorts around the world have wedding planners who take care of the details so that you don’t have to. Destination weddings allow couples to express themselves. Often, for the second or third time couple, it is about making a statement and expressing to family and friends an idea of how they see their future together. Destination weddings can also be taken care of at once. Usually the wedding planner will handle the flowers, photographer, caterer, musicians and reception area, all with your input. In most cases the wedding planner will take care of the marriage license too and all you have to do is send the necessary documents.

SPAIN From the sunny shores of the Mediterranean to the rolling Contraviesa foothills of the snow-capped Sierra Nevada mountains, the country of Spain boasts so many charming locations for honeymooners to escape. The Andalucia region in southern Spain is the perfect place to ignite your passion. Embrace your sweetheart as you watch the fortress walls around Alhambra glow pink at sunset. Indulge your palate in the culinary mecca of Granada. The local tapas are rustic foods, served fresh and in season – your appetite will appreciate the rich flavors of indigenous seafood, gazpacho, and jamón serrano (cured thinly sliced ham) in the warmer months. During the cooler season, savor the Sherry wines of the rainy Jerez area or the dessert wines from the higher elevations of Montilla-Moriles. In the scenic mountain town of Ronda, cross the 390-feet deep Tajo Gorge via the Puente Nuevo. This bridge is anything but “new” – after 40 years of construction, it was completed in 1793 and, like most of the area, much remains unchanged. The birthplace of modern bull-fighting, pay a small admission fee and take your place in the center of the oldest stone bullring, used every fall during Feria de Pedro Romero. Visit the museums on the traditional - yet controversial - sport in Ronda and Seville, which also boasts one of the finest and oldest bullrings in the country. Christopher Columbus waxed poetic on the soft, fragrant spring air in Seville, where his remains are allegedly buried in the beautiful Cathedral de Santa Maria de la Sede. Watch for dolphins off the Mediterranean’s Costa del Sol (“Sun Coast”) in Málaga. Climb to the top of Gibraltar’s Upper Rock and feel like you’re on top of the world, looking out over the sea. Take a ferry from Barcelona to the island of Menorca and discover beautiful clear water, coves, and cliffs at Cala Macarella and the smaller, secluded Macarelleta beach. The largest metropolis along the Mediterranean and Spain’s capital city, Barcelona has enjoyed a revitalization since the 1992 Olympic Games. The docks of Port Vell were turned into a glamorous marina, now boasting many luxury and sporting yachts. place to have a drink and people-watch or take in a summer music event. The classic tapas here is la bomba, a potato ball stuffed with meat and served with spicy sauce or garlic allioli. Wander the covered markets at the classic La Boqueria or the modernized Mercat de Santa Caterina, where you can find fresh meats, seafood, produce, and every type of olive imaginable. For the history buffs, meander through courtyards, mansions, and narrow streets that intersect at cobblestone squares. Step inside Santa Maria del Mar, a Gothic basilica church along the waterfront; it offers amazing acoustics for masterpieces by Mozart and Handel during the holidays. The Barri Gotic and the cloister of La Seu from the 14th and 15th centuries, loom over charming squares in their shadows, now lined by café terraces. During the Renaissance of the 19th century, the Palau de la Música Catalana, a large concert hall and theater, was built and the opulent interior is a “must see” visual sensory experience. Feeling whimsical? Stroll through Park Güell with its enchanted feel and funky photo settings. Tour the famous Pac del Laberint d’Horta with a large labyrinth maze, pool, sculptures, and temple.

In central Spain, spark your romance in the evening glow of Toledo, a walled city with cobblestone streets and cozy restaurants. A hilltop medieval castle, Castillo de San Servando, overlooks the Tagus River here. Madrid is full of architecture reminiscent of fairytale castles, a bustling city filled with restaurants, shopping, museums, and galleries. Take a deep breath as you walk through Parque del Buen Retiro, (“Park of the Pleasant Retreat”), where you will find beautiful sculptures and gardens along a calm lake. Savor romantic dinners in award-winning restaurants and bask in the glow of lit-up fountains at night. PORTUGAL With a spirit of eras gone by, Portugal will romance you with its classic charm and unspoiled countryside. Many artists have been inspired by the sparkling sea and lush forests. Enjoy a horse-drawn carriage ride through the hills of Sintra or find a hidden Roman temple in Evora, while enjoying the mild coastal climate and creating a lifetime of memories. Along the northern coast, Porto is settled along the banks of the Douro

river valley. With a similar waterway landscape as Venice, but less crowded, the city that gave Portugal its name is teeming with well-preserved historic treasures. Cascais is a popular resort area of Portugal. Admire historic buildings during the day, followed by a coast-side feast of renowned paella for dinner, and then salsa dance the night away while enjoying a port wine from the region’s cellars. Accommodations tend to be quite affordable so you can splurge on treats like a candle-lit dinner at one of the many Michelin star gourmet restaurants in Lisbon. The city rests on gentle slopes along the northern banks of the Rio Tejo, where it meets the Atlantic Ocean. Many are drawn to the sandy beaches of Albufeira on the southern coast of Portugal. Golf, sunbathe, or participate in various watersports. Or skip the crowds and head for the hills to experience the traditional Algarve region’s way of life with traditional feasts, singing and dancing, and summer festivals. No matter what pace you prefer to travel, the Iberian Peninsula offers options for everyone. Boas férias!

GRENADA

PHOTOS COURTESY GRENADA BOARD OF TOURISM

Looking for the perfect ingredients of a romantic getaway? Nestled in the Eastern Caribbean between the Windward Islands and Venezuela’s shores, Grenada is a tropical oasis with naturally beautiful surroundings including world-renowned beaches, crystal blue waters, waterfalls in the rainforests, and even a hint of nutmeg in the air. 4 86 • PREMIER BRIDE www.premierbridewisconsin.com

Though small in terms of land area, the Spice Island offers a large number of unique things to do and see. Whether you like to wander the volcanic black sand beach at Mango Bay or lay in the white sands of Pink Gin Beach on the southwest shores of the island, there are many ways to relax in the midst of so much natural beauty. Feeling a little more adventurous? Take a vigorous trek to the top of Mount Quq Qua and look down over the rainforest. Hike down into the forest reserve in the crater of the dormant Grand Etang volcano. Cool off in the picturesque pools of the Seven Sisters Falls, which looks like a scene straight out of the movies. Other notable falls to see are Annandale Waterfalls, Mount Carmel, Concord, and Tufton Hall. Dive into the clear waters of Moliniere Bay to see the world’s first underwater sculpture park. It is both beautiful in its artistry and its efforts to rejuvenate and conserve the local coral reefs. Divers can also discover diverse marine life and coral along walls and numerous shipwreck sites. If you prefer to stay above the surface of the water, there are plenty of world-class sailing opportunities from Grenada’s marinas. Throughout the year you can watch the sailing festivals, regattas, and other races. If you are new to nautical navigation, you can charter a yacht and have a captain and crew guide your journey. More experienced sailors will enjoy the challenge of the open waters and wind conditions from gentle breezes to hefty gales. Earning its nickname as the “Spice of the Caribbean”, even the air in Grenada has a sweet aroma from the nutmeg, cinnamon, cloves, ginger, mace, cocoa, and wild coffee grown here. Grenada is one of the largest exporters of nutmeg in the world, second only to Indonesia.

Take a scenic drive to visit Belmont Estate, a spice plantation that has been in operation since the 17th century. Learn about the rich flavors of the island and wander their gardens and goat farm; you might even be entertained by a monkey or two. Tour the Grenada Chocolate Company and see the process from growing sustainable, organic cocoa in the nutrient-filled volcanic soil to producing fine dark chocolate bars that are sold around the world (and yes, there are samples to taste test!) No Caribbean vacation is complete without a little rum, so make sure that the River Antoine Rum Distillery is marked off your list before you head home. Privately owned, it is the oldest functioning water-propelled distillery in the Caribbean, having stayed true to many distilling practices since the 1800s. Stroll through the charming capital city of St. George’s, lining the harbor and offering great shopping and dining experiences along its narrow streets. Take in the best view of the city and harbor from the top of Fort George, overlooking the colorful 18th century buildings topped with orange-tiled roofs. Learn some of the fort’s history and compare why its large cannons face out to sea, whereas the cannons at Fort Frederick face inland. Be sure to visit the bustling Market Square on Saturdays – it is the place to see and be seen. After dinner, walk some of the 2-mile long expanse of the white sand Grand Anse beach or slip into a nightclub. If you visit the island during late July and early August, you might be able to catch their “Spicemas”. This Carnival festival features several days of pageantry with dancers and singers covered in oils and paint or dressed in brilliant costumes. and parties. Some dress up as “jab jab” (French for “devil”), covered in dark oil, wearing horns, and carrying torches, but it is a boisterous celebration, not frightening as it may first appear. The weather always feels like paradise in Grenada, with average temperatures ranging from 75-85 degrees Fahrenheit (F) and a breeze to keep you comfortable. The rainy season typically runs from June to December and hurricanes rarely hit this area. The island’s landscape is mostly untouched and her nationals try to protect its natural beauty with conservation and eco-tourism practices. Grenada also feels like home with English-speaking, friendly people, though you may notice some nationals speaking with a local French-African dialect known as “patois”. US dollars and major credit cards are widely accepted for currency, as well as the Eastern Caribbean dollar (EC). The tap water is safe to drink and bottled water is available for sale around the island. (JFK), and Atlanta. These flights tend to arrive later in the evening, so some travelers prefer to stay in a standard hotel the first night and transfer to their resort the next day to save on cost. • You will likely need to bring an adapter to plug in your hair styling tools, electronics, and other devices. Grenada uses 220 volts at 50 cycles and usually British-style 3-prong plugs. • To get a rental car in Grenada, you will need to acquire a Grenadian driving permit at the police station. Note that, having a history of British rule, they drive on the left side of road here and that not all roads are in the best condition. Private cars can be hired and public transportation is available if you prefer to leave the driving to someone else. • Wearing swimwear is not permitted on the main roads or in bars, restaurants, and shops. You are also prohibited from wearing camouflage clothing, as a distinction between the local authorities and civilians. We hope your visit to Grenada adds a little “spice” to your romance – enjoy!

BACHELOR (ETTE) PARTIES take on a new look If you think you know all about these traditional events, think again! Bachelor and bachelorette parties are about friends getting together, sharing old stories and, perhaps, creating some new memories. A weekend immersed in an outdoor adventure with plenty of time before and after for fine dining and visits to the local pubs is a great way to do just that! Adventures include white water rafting, cattle drives, deep sea fishing, ATV desert rides, sky diving … well you get the idea. The adventure also can be adjusted to fit the skill level of the group. The adventure bachelor parties give the best man, who didn’t take “Party Planning 101,” a chance to sign the group up and then relax. From the time the groomsmen arrive at the destination city until they depart, everything is planned out, orchestrated and included in the modest pricing. Choosing a destination close to home, within driving distance, or at a mid point that is convenient to all members, is a plus; too often out of town guys must make two costly trips to the wedding city. The same concepts and advantages apply for the gals. The questions you or your fiancé need to be thinking about are: 1. How many people are involved and where are they coming from? 2. What type of adventure is appropriate? 3. What is our price range, considering all the members of the group? 4. How much time is there to schedule the event? 5. How do I learn more?

Transportation GETTING THERE: Wedding Day Transportation

The moments between the ceremony and the reception are giddy, exciting ones, and it’s only fitting to be whisked off in a carriage or ride off into the sunset. But those happy endings aren’t even practical. So even if the transportation between the ceremony and reception isn’t fit for a Hollywood screenplay, here are some tips to make it as fun, affordable and memorable as the rest of your day.4 92 • PREMIER BRIDE www.PremierBrideNY.com

TRANSPORTATION your area. Trolleys generally can accommodate between 20 and 35 people, so they’re great for larger parties or adding on some family members or friends. With their antique look and old world charm, they’ll lend a lovely, elegant touch to this wedding day detail. Since most have outdoor decks, these are especially fun in small towns so you can take a peek outside and watch onlookers wave at the newlyweds. And there’s no transportation alternative that looks as great in photos! UNIQUE ALTERNATIVES Limos, party buses and trolleys are great, traditional options, but some new couples might opt for something more personal or creative. A horsedrawn carriage is a romantic, vintage

option, especially if you can decorate it with your wedding colors or pull up to your waving guests. Vintage cars are also great photo ops and add a touch of class. An antique Rolls Royce or a ’69 Mustang are fun and something you don’t get to ride in every day. Ride in style like the royal couple did in their April wedding in a decorated navy soft-top Aston Martin Volante. Or, as with everything else in the wedding, make sure the transportation connects to YOU. Maybe you met at a Harley rally – ride off on your twin Hogs! Or maybe you share a love of mountain biking – don’t be afraid to wheel over on a tandem together. Personality is what makes weddings memorable, so however you move, make sure it’s full of your style.

SHOPPING MADE EASY attending bridal shows You may find that the more time you can save in planning your wedding, the better. A Bridal Show can help. Here’s information and tips to help! Plan in Advance: Know your budget. Make a list of what you need most and what your budget will allow for each item and service.

Types of Bridal Shows: Small intimate shows average attendance is between 75-200 people and generally around 20-40 different vendors. These shows allow you much more time to talk with the individual wedding professionals, ask questions and get more in-depth answers. The second kind of show is much larger, averaging anywhere from 800 to 2000 attending and featuring anywhere from 100-250 different vendors. The biggest advantage to this kind of show is the wide range of vendors available and the beautiful displays for great wedding ideas. Pre-printed address labels: Most vendors will have some special drawing for gifts and prizes. Having these labels available will save you time and effort. Include your full name, address, phone number, wedding date and email address. Create a temporary wedding e-mail address: It’s free and can be deleted after your wedding date. Obviously you will receive solicitation after the show. This is a good 102 • PREMIER BRIDE www.PremierBrideNY.com

thing. Quality vendors reaching out to provide specific wedding information and tips, along with any special offers they might have. Who should come along: Yes, your fiancé should come along, especially if it’s just the two of you. Decisions can be made on the spot and you both will have a good time! Or, bring a couple of friends, your mother or a whole entourage. Date or Calendar Book: It might be appropriate to schedule an appointment at another time for a more in-depth conversation. Usually any show “specials” will also apply if a date and time is made for a follow-up discussion. There are times when you might want to book something right at the show, such as limited availability and your date is still open. Or you might have already met with a vendor prior and are ready to make the commitment. Shoes: Wear comfortable shoes. The odds are you’ll be on your feet for quite a while. You don’t want to leave until you’re ready, not because your feet are too tired. Pressing onward when you’re feet hurt just isn’t any fun. Children: Avoid bringing small children to the show if possible. While you might not have a choice or it may be tempting to bring your flower girl along to see the neat wedding stuff, they are sure to tire more quickly then you. Prepare for information overload: When you find a vendor you are interested in, make a note about why. What struck you as appealing about this person? When you get home and you’re looking through 10 different photographers, your note may be the only thing you have to remember which ones you liked and why. Also, write down any good tips they might have given you.

WEDDING CATASTROPHE? we’ll tell you how to avoid it When thinking about your big day insurance doesn’t cross your mind. However, there is A LOT of money, time and effort being invested in your wedding. If something goes wrong would you be fine with completely losing that investment? You want your wedding to be perfect. You don’t want to worry about what you would do if the unthinkable happened. Wedding insurance covers a wide range of damage and mishaps. If the bride’s dress or groom’s tuxedo is damaged or lost, or if the rings disappear, you can get repair or replacement cost for them. If severe weather forces you to postpone your wedding you can get reimbursement for non-recoverable expenses. If your wedding photographs are damaged or lost, insurance can

cover the cost to have the photographs retaken. Damaged gifts can be repaired or replaced. This is just a small list of what you can be protected against. Wedding insurance not only protects, it is also extremely affordable. It can cost as little as $160. After the big day, the gifts your guests gave you to start your journey can be insured with Renter’s Insurance. And let’s not forget about the first home you purchase to raise your family. Not only will you want to protect the home itself with a Homeowner’s policy, but also make sure that you will be able to pay your mortgage in the event of the unforeseen. Life Insurance and savings plans can give you and your future children some security for your future.

PERSONALIZE YOUR WEDDING make your day your own Literature class, have your guests sit at tables named after the authors you had to read together. Or name them after places you’ve gone to as a couple, along with a brief story, a photo and a question or two for guests to ask each other, such as “What’s your worst travel story?” or “What was your best meal ever in a restaurant?” This will provide guests with good conversation starters, along with a sneak peek into your life as a couple. ardentphoto.com

You bought the dress. You’ve heard all the floral tips – but so have your other friends getting married soon. How are you supposed to break away from the mold and make your wedding a truly unique day? By adding a couple personal touches, you’ll offer your friends and family an inside look into your love story and the chance to be part of a meaningful, once-in-a-lifetime experience. Start by setting the tone with your invitations. Incorporate a fun picture to the invite, perhaps dressed as your favorite movie couple, or engaged in an activity or hobby you love to do as a couple. If you expect outof-town guests, you could include a personalized map of the city that points out your favorite pizza joint or the place you met. Personalized invitations will set an intimate tone for your big day, even if you’re planning a large wedding. For the ceremony, consider writing your own vows. Don’t be scared if you’re not a writer – there are plenty of pastors or wedding guides that give tips to couples who wish to personalize their wedding vows. You could even include favorite love song lyrics or poetry to express your commitment. A limo is always classy for leaving the ceremony, but consider more personal exit ideas, too. Love horseback riding? Hire a horse-drawn carriage to carry you to the reception. Honeymooning in Italy? Rent a vespa on which to whisk away! As your guests file into the reception, send them to tables with names rather than numbers. If you met in a

After the toasts, surprise your guests by raising your glasses to them. Thank them for being there and share your appreciation for all the support they’ve shown you over the years. Your guests will love being addressed as an integral part of your day. And you can’t forget your first dance! Most couples choose a romantic song for a slow dance. Why not spice things up a little? Take tango or ballroom dancing classes ahead of time and show off your new moves in a choreographed number! Personalizing your wedding simply means bringing a little bit of “YOU” into the day. Express yourself!

do’s& don’ts TOP 25 WEDDING

1

Do take advantage of Internet technology. There are many sites dedicated to wedding planning that offer a wealth of information at your fingertips. Coordinate with vendors, make and confirm reservations, create a Pinterest account to save your favorite images and ideas. (Visit our website at PremierBride.com for trusted local vendors).

2

Do create a separate email address and use it for everything you sign up for during the planning process. You’ll enjoy getting special offers and information but can delete the address after your wedding date.

3

Don’t forget to pamper yourself. Treat your mom and maids the day before the wedding with an afternoon at the spa. You’ll have the time of your life enjoying facials, massages, manicures and pedicures. It will make you feel more relaxed and beautiful.

4

Do contact the church or synagogue where you will perform your ceremony and ask about any rules or guidelines regarding music. Some churches require that you use their organist.

110 • PREMIER BRIDE www.PremierBrideNY.com

5

Do remember your guests with small children. Instead of putting “no children” or “adults-only reception” on invitations, ask your reception site manager if there is a small room or play area near the festivities that you can rent. Then hire a professional babysitting service to take care of the kids. Parents will appreciate your consideration and be able to relax and enjoy your reception knowing they are close to their children. Do remember when purchasing a gown to be realistic about your expectations for losing weight. A gown can always be taken in, but rarely can it be let out without leaving stitch marks for all to see.

6

Don’t forget to involve stepparents in your ceremony in some way, perhaps a reading during your ceremony or an invocation before dinner.

7

Do consider table visits during your reception. It is a grand display of appreciation and respect when the bride and groom spend a few moments visiting their guests at each table.

8

Don’t seat older guests near the band or the speakers as it may be hard for them to hear anything else.

9

Do consider decorating chairs in a new way such as black, silver, white or traditional gold. Transform an ordinary room or site into a ballroom. Chair covers completely change the look of your reception.

10

Don’t forget to discuss black and white and sepia tone images with your photographer. This classic style is dramatic and remains popular.

11 12

Do remember that the hour of the ceremony is an indicator of the formality of the reception. Do consider having your entire wedding at a full-service hotel. The convenience of having the ceremony, reception and guest lodging in one place is incomparable, especially for a complicated event.

13 14

To get your skin in shape for your wedding day, don’t forget to start six months prior to your wedding and practice make-up techniques. When renting a stretch limo, do remember that it can usually seat up to 10 people, but fewer when the bride’s gown and train and the bridesmaid’s dresses are factored in to the equation.

15 16

Do remember to return rental items on time and undamaged. Don’t forget that the best way to let people know where you are registered is to have family and friends spread the word. Although

17 18

it’s impolite to mention the registry on wedding invitations, a hostess may do so on shower invitations. Do select the ceremony and reception locations nine to 12 months before your wedding. If you’re getting married in popular months like May or June, select these locations as soon as possible.

19

Make finding the right caterer and baker a priority. Great food is critical to the wedding celebration. Interviews and tastings are a must.

20 21

Don’t waste time getting to your reception. Have photos of the wedding party taken before the ceremony. Do reserve your photographer nine to 12 months before your wedding. Decide which shots you definitely want and which ones you can live without.

22 23 24 25

Don’t forget to send an invitation to your officiant and to all of your wedding party. Do pick up your invitation envelopes as soon as possible so that you can begin addressing them. Do consider having two bouquets, one to keep and one to throw. Do check with your church or temple about their policies, especially regarding alcohol.

BEAUTIFUL IDEAS BY THE SEASON making even the dreariest days beautiful

capturingyourday.com

Most people think of sunshine when they picture a wedding day, but not every day fits that mold. Luckily, something as joyful as a wedding can be sunny even on the dreariest of days. As long as you take advantage of what your season has to offer, all four can provide beautiful accents to your big day.

Spring weddings are always popular, in part because of the parallels between new life blooming in the gardens and the new life of a married couple. Using flower bulbs instead of full-grown flowers also add to that feeling. For a spring-themed centerpiece that doubles as a favor, have multiple small, pastel-colored vases and encourage your guests to bring one home. Seeds and tiny monogrammed flowerpots are also a fun favor! You could also try bringing a little Easter to your reception by having lilies as centerpieces or hiding wedding favors, especially if there will be children present. For summer weddings, try a slightly more informal approach to your meal 128 • PREMIER BRIDE www.PremierBrideNY.com

by offering the spread in picnic baskets or garden-party style! Mini picnic baskets or personalized blankets could then be given as a favor. Also, if you want to use bright, bold colors in your flowers or decorations, summer is the best time to do it. A fall wedding has a more rustic feeling to it. Warm reds, oranges and yellows are best for decorations, and don’t be afraid to ditch some of the flowers for tasteful wheat stalks or gourds among the arrangements. A fun favor could be making homemade cider or jams with your initials on the jar for your guests to enjoy. Many couples shy away from winter weddings, but it can actually be one of the most intimate seasons for a wedding because it provides such respite from the bitter cold. Deep purples, forest greens and ruby reds are perfect to set a cozy tone, while icy blues and silver show off winter’s sparkle. Cinnamon-scented pinecones with some holly or giant poinsettias make tasteful centerpieces. Instead of bubbling champagne for the toast, why not embrace winter and raise a mug of hot chocolate or egg nog? It’s delicious and comforting in the cold. If there will be kids at the reception, set up a table to make their own sparkling snowflakes to sprinkle on tables as decoration or as a souvenir for the kids! As for their parents, send them home with coffee mugs, spiced tea, or wintry-scented candles. It doesn’t have to be 70 and sunny for the perfect wedding as long as you use Mother Nature to your advantage!
