Model 527 Bolster Extensions

NOTICE: The following instructions are guidelines written for experienced mechanics who takes proper safety precautions. All work should be performed to local and internal safety requirements and approved by the company safety officer or appropriate authority. Only experienced mechanics should perform installation of Bolster Extension mounting brackets.

CAUTION: BOLSTER EXTENSIONS ARE DESIGNED FOR SPECIFIC WEIGHT LIMITS.

MODEL BE-527 - DO NOT EXCEED 6,000 LBS. FOR EACH PAIR (3,000 LBS. PER ARM).

MODEL BE-527HD – DO NOT EXCEED 8,000 LBS. FOR EACH PAIR (4,000 LBS. PER ARM).

CAUTION: TO AVOID DAMAGE TO EQUIPMENT AND PERSONAL INJURY, USE MOUNTING BOLTS SUPPLIED WITH EACH BOLSTER EXTENSION. IF REPLACED, USE ONLY BOLTS WITH A TENSILE STRENGTH OF 170,000 PSI MINIMUM. ENSURE ADEQUATE THREAD ENGAGEMENT FOR ALL SCREWS.

CAUTION: REVIEW ENTIRE INSTALLATION PROCEDURE PRIOR TO INSTALLATION TO ENSURE CONSIDERATION IS GIVEN TO SPACING, LEVELING, AND MOUNTING HOLE LOCATIONS AND ADJUSTMENT.

INSTALLATION

Note: Refer to Dwg 527 and assembly drawing for specific length referred to on Dwg 527.

Note: Verify that the SHCS and roll pins are of the proper length for the installation.

1. If the bolster extension is to be used without die lifters then the top of the rollers should be on the same plane as the bolster surface.

2. If die lifters are used install those first.

3. Use a straight edge against bolster surface or elevated die lifter rail bearings to project the plane which the bolster extension rollers must be at after installation. Ideally, a flat plate which rests on both die lifters simultaneously and hangs over the edge of the bolster should be used. The bolster extension mounting bracket can then be placed against the bolster side and lifted upward until the rollers touch the plate. The center for the mounting screws can then be determined and a punch used to create a drill point.

4. Drill and tap the hole for the ¾-10 mounting screws. Make sure that the horizontal centerline of the holes is parallel with the bolster surface. See drawings for location of holes. (Note template is no longer used – carefully calculate locations and review entire procedure for details on when to match drill holes for the roll pins).

5. Secure the mounting bracket with the mounting screws using light torque and check for proper elevation and level.

6. If the bolster extension rollers are not on the correct plane the screw clearance holes allow for some adjustment. In that case, back off the screws slightly so that you can move the bracket using a soft hammer or the like.

7. Make sure that the rollers are on plane with the die lifter rollers (hinge pin is perpendicular - rollers are at the proper height). If additional adjustments are necessary use a reamer to remove paint from clearance holes or oval holes slightly to allow movement up or down and shim the back of the flange on the top or bottom as needed.

8. After adjustment secure the screws using proper torque - confirm alignment.

9. Verify that the bolster extension swings and locks in all three positions, i.e. straight out and 90° left and right.

10. After securing all screws transfer drill holes for the two roll pins. Then drive those pins in to finish the installation. Pins should be flush with bracket.

OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS

Note: The Model - 527 Bolster Extension can be stowed in the 90° left or right position.

CAUTION: WHEN DIES ARE LOADED AND UNLOADED, THE BOLSTER EXTENSION MUST BE SECURELY LOCKED.

1. Pull the Locking Mechanism Lever located under the bolster extension forward to the unlock position and move Bolster Extension from the 90° left or right position.

2. Release Locking Mechanism Lever after the Bolster Extension is moved about 30°. The lock will then engage automatically when the next lock position is reached.

Note: The Locking Mechanism is spring loaded to lock when the groove in the hinge lines up with the locking mechanism. If the spring breaks replace it immediately.

3. Inspect Bolster Extension to ensure that it is properly positioned and securely locked.

4. Place die carefully onto the Bolster Extensions inside the spring loaded die stops.

CAUTION: DO NOT EXCEED RATED LOAD LIMIT.

5. Roll die onto bolster.

To stow Bolster Extension in the 90° left or right position pull Locking Mechanism Lever to the forward unlock position and swing Bolster Extension to the left or right.

CAUTION: MAKE SURE DIE IS WIDE ENOUGH (L-R DIMENSION) TO BE ROLLED SAFELY ON THE BOLSTER EXTENSIONS.

MAINTENANCE

Each user must implement an inspection system which covers the following and other relevant factors which may exist in a given location.

1. Establish inspection intervals based on frequency of use, abuse and other relevant factors.

2. Check to ensure that spring loaded die stop at the tip of the Bolster Extension is normally in the up position and that Locking Mechanism Lever, located under the Bolster Extension is operating freely. Replace or repair as necessary.

CAUTION: MAKE SURE THAT THE LOCKING MECHANISM RETURN SPRINGS ARE OPERATIONAL.

3. Check condition of mounting bracket and bolster extension interface. Make any necessary repairs.

4. Replace any damaged rollers.

5. Make sure all fasteners are tight.

6. Make sure the maximum die weight is not exceeded.

7. Remind fork lift operators to avoid damaging Bolster Extensions.

8. Instruct personnel to inform safety engineers in the event of a forklift collision with bolster extension.

9. Other relevant factors as determined by the user.
