Insentience Commercial Portfolio E19CP Jennifer Fearn H00127178 Fashion Year 3
Anatomy I found the human body incredibly inspiring and found it provided endless design inspiration. I looked at the skeleton as a whole and then focused in on the areas I found the most interesting. Designers have been using the body as inspiration for years. Most of the designers used the body very literally but I wanted to use it as more subtle inspiration.
Sensation Instead of picking a particular sensation to focus on I decided to explore a loss of sensation. This inspired the name of the collection; Insentience. This in turn made me think of the human body as the human body can experience a loss of sensation for a number of reasons from simply sitting in one position for too long, to a medical condition. This sensation also inspired the colour palette.
Colour Palette Loss of sensation and the body has influenced the colour palette. The warm brown was chosen to portray skin and the soft grey again portraying skin but this time showing a loss of sensation, through a loss of colour. Finally the pale grey/blue represents both the colour of veins beneath the skin and a loss of sensation, as an area of the body turning blue suggests a loss of feeling. The deep red was chosen for the print as a contrast to the neutral colours.
Fabric I chose my fabrics based on many different factors. I chose mainly wool based fabrics as I wanted them to feel luxurious and high-quality and also because my collection is for Autumn/ Winter.
Silhouette Inspiration for the silhouette for my garments came both from contemporary garments and the shapes of the skeleton. I was particularly inspired by the ribcage, pelvis and spine. I took the shape of these parts and played with scale, distortion and simplification to create shapes that could be turned into wearable clothing.
Digital Print My digital print, on white, silk organza is a reference to the lace requirement of the brief. The print features an intricate pattern on a sheer background, much like lace. The print itself was inspired by veins.

Garment Details I tried to create a very high-end finish to my garments. My dress and jacket are fully lined , the organza top has very neat double folded hems and French seams and the trousers and blue top both also have French seams.
