The design of Clybourn Metro Station begins with two strips of “negative space that are created by the pieces of land on the site that are separated by tracks. The strips of land are rotated and stacked to create an array of digital and physical models that inform the final design. The result is a structure that is mainly supported by a space frame that appears to fold around the train tracks, seamlessly blending into the site.

The Montessori School explores shifting moments of materiality in response to local moments of geometric change and programmatic relationships. ETFE panels are used as the primary material. The panels shift in thickness in response to structural and programmatic requirements.

Mixed-Use Tower | New York, NY 24 | JENNIFER GOTTLIEB | PORTFOLIO
The Soho Mixed-Use tower is a uniquely configured 35 story mixed-use office and hotel tower. The structure blends hotel and office functions in one of New York’s trendiest neighborhoods. The fragmented site includes entrances to the office and hotel, an underground shopping center with connection to subways, hotel amenities, restaurants, and public space.

The transformation of igneous rock serves as the basis for the development of the project. The diagram maps the rule-based system that produces different kinds of igneous rock. At certain key moments when a dramatic phase change occurs, spatial qualities are assigned to that moment defining key qualities. These qualities are used to create distinct spatial units with attributes that define form, capacity, and arrangement. The blending of spatial units creates a soft gradient that shows the gradual rate of formal and programmatic change in the building. These spatial qualities are controlled and utilized to conform to predefined programmatic qualities inherent in the program. JENNIFER GOTTLIEB | PORTFOLIO | 27

The fragmented landscape at the lowest level of the building allows for multiple entrances that define the mixed-use program of the building. A commercial space runs along Sullivan Street and also goes underground, directly connecting the site to the Subway on Canal Street. There are office and hotel entrances on Varick Street. The lower, more fragmented levels of the building serve the hotel functions. As the building moves up vertically, the spaces gradually become more open and uniform. At the very top of the building there is a commercial sky bar.

FD Mixed-Use Housing | Gowanus, Brooklyn, NY 32 | JENNIFER GOTTLIEB | PORTFOLIO
The primary users of FD Mixed-Use are families with special needs children, specifically children with a condition known as Familial Dysautonomia. The project has two main goals: the creation of a space that is specifically tailored to the user, as well as the integration of the child into regular life, specifically into the Gowanus area.

Sensory Hallway Design The creation of sensory hallways aims to encourage children to challenge their own physical capabilities by making activities that are difficult for them enjoyable and rewarding. Each hallway has 3’ of space lined with material such as sand or gravel which are commonly used by Physical Therapists to help with balance. The hallways are lined with 3 levels of grips, each spaced farther apart. As the children become better walkers they challenge themselves to use more difficult levels of grips. The grips are formed by a change of scale in the facade.

Children’s Hospital | New York, NY 36 | JENNIFER GOTTLIEB | PORTFOLIO
The Children’s Hospital houses all resources for child health under one roof. Some child health related issues deal with children. Other child health related issues deal with women and their choices. In essence, this is a building about promoting life and death at the same time. It is the battle between pro life and pro choice versus the battle of children battling everything. It is a building about choice.

This project explores the development of the corporate tower and the public plaza by exchanging the plaza for the street. An array of sketch models are explored as strategies for lifting the building off the street.

Concept
The interior spaces are broken up by a ribbon-like formal structure that weaves through the building. The intention is to create multiple volumes that house each specialty that the hospital deals with. In contrast to the standard floor by floor divisions present in most hospitals, these volumes enable patients to move freely around the spaces. This idea was generated by a series of interviews with pediatric patients who complained that the worst JEN

part of going in for chemo is that it is “too boring. Whenever you want to leave the floor, you need a nurse.”
