flexagon A study of movement with paper

Ideation and material tests

Sketching the mechanics of how the human body moves became the main method to understanding movement through observing people and taking inspiration from the natural world. Paper and a supporting structure such as wire or glue were the only materials allowed for this project.

final

A structure encassing the whole human body to show the versatile ways it can bend, twist, contract, and expand.

Ideation through needs The ideation conisted of how I interacted with the space around me: small and large spaces, loud and quiet, the amount of light present, etc. And i took note how i interacted in all those spaces through creating a territory map of the spaces I inhabit during my typical day. To determine which spaces create a more effective personal workspace.

As a collaborative team effort, we had to make sure every members needs was met and build the cardboard consruction surrounding our desks accordingly.

Prototyping and material tests innovative solutions were needed for we were only allowed to use cardboard: no glue, wires or tape. and it had to be made of 100% already used cardboard which required asking stores for extra cardboard if they had some in the back or going dumpster diving. THis made our cardboard structure have a zero carbon footprint for repurposing cardboard that already existed. With the only material being cardboard, we too kon the challenge and experimened by creating a tabing system that would connect our units. also, to make the groupwork more efficient we created templates that could adjust to different depths of our triangle unit. (The taller we build, the thinner the unit).

Final product

I do want to note that our cardboard structure collapsed and we got together to rebuild it. throughout building we learned how an arch needs to have a certain tension inorder for it to stay up. Therefore we came up with some solutions. By making the cardboard more structural by making the tabs itself reinforce the module, the cardboard has more strength to push against one another, thus lessening the chances of the cardboard falling into itself.

REFLECTIVE AURA ILLUMINATION AND TRANSFORMATION LAMP PROJECT

Ideation for the lamp project began through creating a concept map of how i personally define illumination and Transformation, and then envelop those concepts into the design of my lamp. I learned how space and function is important to me and got iinterested in creating a lamp that transforms my desk into a comfortale workspace. Afterwards I started to Develop several lamps ideas either sitting on the table or overhead through sketches. My direction focused on an ambient light illuminating my desk space . throughout the process I got hooked on creating a lamp with an encompassing arch with cantilever bases.

Explorations through sketches

Material Testing and Prototyping My material tests consisted mainly of Testing out wood and metal working tools. One was to determine neccessary sizes to embed the cable into the wood and another consisted of how i could manipulate the metal arch by malleating it. This got me curious in creating a convex and concave shifting arch by using two metal tracks and shaping them into an arch with metal strips embedded between them. But then after creating a paper cone around a spot light, I enjoyed the clarity of the light shinning on the only handsanded metal strip. So, I decided to come back into a focus of my previous plan of arching a simple metal strip over my table.

Final product

A functional desk lamp that defines the boundaries of a workspace through an encompassing arch. The symmetrical bases minimally touch the table near the edges to maintain a maximum desk working area for the user. The lamp transforms a desk into an intimate space through the projection of light from the opposing bases towards the center.
