ACSA Steel Design Competition Entry // The new Asheville Art Museum is located in the French Broad River Park in Asheville, North Carolina. Asheville is an up-and-coming arts and crafts center, with a growing River Arts District just a few minutes away from the proposed museum. The museum is divided into five pavilions which house permanent and temporary collections. Its design is defined by simple geometry, minimal materials and the incorporation of natural light with the natural environment. It was important to maintain a connection with the park. As people circulate around the building, they are able to indulge in the surrounding views. The exterior space can be used for events and as exhibition space.

The structure is made up of Y-shaped columns going around the perimeter of the building with a concrete base and steel arms supporting the roofs. This structural system allows for glass curtain walls all around the building. The glass creates a physical barrier and becomes the envelope of the building while visually eliminating the boundary between the outside and the inside. A central courtyard was incorporated into the design where sculptural works will be exhibited and which reconnects the building back to the park where it is located.

French Broad Abbey is a monastery near Asheville, NC, designed for Trappist Monks. Guided by the concept of human scale and the minimalistic way of life of the monks, the project focuses on the design of the dormitories. In monastic life, the cell or dormitory is considered a sacred place because it is the place where by “God’s grace experienced in prayer, the monk is transformed into a new creation”. Ultimately, the cell is the place where the monks connect with God individually, before and after having done so with those in their community.

The chosen location of the new Savannah Union Station on MLK Boulevard has historical significance, as this was the place where the original building was located. This station built in 1902, was demolished in 1963 to give way to the Interstate 16 overpass. The city is seeking to rehabilitate this area of the city, as it is disconnected from the rest of the Historic Downtown. The Oglethorpe Plan designed by James Oglethorpe in the 1730s shaped the city of Savannah. Green spaces have been of great significance to the circulation of downtown ever since. However, MLK became disconnected from this the rest of downtown after the construction of the overpass. This project seeks to rehabilitate MLK Boulevard as a walkable, and secure area. The project combines the historical site with GIS data, to improve its current conditions and reintroduce a train station to the city of Savannah.

dérive
[French:de.ʁiv]
1. An unplanned journey through a landscape, usually in an urban context, in which participants drop their everyday relation and let themselves be drawn by the attractions of the terrain and the encounters they find there.
Savannah is a city that is characterized by its walkability, especially in the Historic Downtown. The green spaces of the squares create a pleasurable transition along the streets of Downtown Savannah. During my dérive, I was able to perceive the strong connection between the squares and pedestrian circulation. This is a quality that MLK Boulevard lost after the construction of the I-16 overpass. The project seeks to rehabilitate this area of the city by incorporating the concept of a green square in its public plaza.

Savannah FC Stadium is located in the under-construction development of Savannah River Landings at the north of Downtown Savannah (Georgia). The proposed stadium has a capacity of 15,000 seats, with additional space for future expansion. A driving element for the design was the use of natural light. The skin is designed to be translucent in three of the facades, with only the north facade having transparent panels to allow for views towards the new Savannah, as well as the Riverfront. At night, the stadium becomes a beacon of light for the River Landings through the use of LED lights in the panels. Savannah FC Stadium is meant to become a new symbol for the city, but more than anything it is meant to be a place where people can experience beyond game day.
