Jennifer Laurie Smith

Hello! This is me... Contact: 07789408579 jennysmith2104@hotmail.com 2 Heathfield Road, Sevenoaks, TN13 3DA https://uk.linkedin.com/pub/jennifersmith/73/1a/b6

All about me:

What I Love:

I have recently completed my final year at Nottingham Trent University studying BA (Hons) Interior Architecture and Design. My degree has provided me with a strong set of skills that has made me the adaptable, enthusiastic designer that I am today.

Writing lists Kick boxing Horse riding Photography Drinking tea Model making Free hand sketching Going to the gym Summer festivals The Cinema

Whilst studying at University I have widened my understanding of the subject and developed both my software skills and design capabilities. Collectively, these have enabled my confidence as a designer and ambition to grow enormously. I am looking to secure a graduate position within a creative company where I can put my skills and experience to good use. I relish the chance to get involved and hope to secure a position that both excites and challenges me, with the aim to develop into a professional who designs inspiring spaces for people to experience.

UNIVERSITY PROJECTS

FINAL YEAR: FINAL MAJOR PROJECT ST MARY’S CHURCH THERMAL BATHS St Mary’s Church has been remodelled into a new thermal bath retreat with a moral twist. The church provides a space where the public can sinfully indulge in luxurious treatments, rejuvenate, and experience fine food and drink whilst controversially in an ancient religious setting. The retreat has been designed to create a quiet, relaxing, sanctuary that contrasts the fast paced lifestyle of city living by using the traditional processes of public bathing. The proposal allows the public to focus solely on their own wants and needs, encouraging them to give in to their temptations.

CONCEPT MODELS AND DEVELOPMENT: LIGHT REFRACTION AND SHADOW GLASS | DISTORTION | TEXTURE

REFRACTING LIGHT THROUGH GLASS RAINBOW | DIRECTION |COLOUR After brainstorming initial ideas, I proceeded to explore how light could be manipulated using different materials and angled planes. The photographs above show a few examples of how I experimented with light and glass prisms. The photographs illustrate how different spectrum’s of colour can be created and how the different forms of the material can create decorative patterns of light and shadow.

CREATING TEXTURE USING SHADOWS COVER | CONFUSE |CONCEAL Using the laser cutter I created a series of slides with different cut out designs inspired by stained glass to experiment with shadow patterns. The room dividers would also provide a way of concealing spaces and create more private areas for the users to experience. I explored layering the slides to create confusion and a more textured look.

1:50 SECTIONAL MODEL AS PROPOSED

AUTOCAD | 3D MODELLING | ATTENTION TO DETAIL

FINAL MODELS SITE MODEL | SECTIONAL MODEL As part of my final presentation I made a 1:50 scale sectional model of my proposal within the existing building. Using CAD software I drew up the church using the survey data I had collected and began to create a puzzle of the building. I then used the laser cutter to cut the CAD drawing out of MDF wood, the result is shown in the photographs. In addition to the 1:50 model I chose to create a site model to show the scale of the building in comparison to its surroundings. As water was a key element throughout the design I chose to highlight the surrounding lake areas using clear acrylic making it easy to distinguish the land from water.

‘BRICKING IT’ EXHIBITION

FREE RANGE, THE OLD TRUMAN BREWERY, BRICK LANE

During my final year of study as a year we came up with ‘Bricking It’, an exhibition displaying our final major projects at the Free Range Show in London. Our work was displayed for 6 days at The Old Truman Brewery on Brick Lane. I was part of the branding team for the show, which involved coming up with a name, logo, colour scheme and overall look of the show. We were additionally responsible for the production of posters, signage, brochures and invitations.

FINAL YEAR PROJECT TWO JOHN LEWIS OXFORD ST. PIXELATION Breaking through out to the street, a series of stacked cubes are piled around the external entrances of John Lewis, Oxford Street; the proposed technology department has been designed to catch public attention. Cubes of varying sizes and materials sit carefully considered and accurately placed on an ‘imaginary’ 100x100mm net layout inspired by a pixel grid. Derived from the exploration of pixels, resolution and coding, the ‘cloud’ of pixels runs throughout the space. The clouds suspended and partially illuminated in the main notable areas of the department.

MINI MEETS CONVERSE Both brands have proven that the extensive change in the retail market has had no effect on the simplicity of each of their designs and how they have developed as businesses. By only making slight alterations and improvements, the styles of the cars and trainers have become iconic; used by a wide variety of people, including celebrities. When first designed, they were and both created for a functional purpose but as the companies have developed the products have become increasingly more fashion conscious. The exhibition stand creates a fun, energetic space to experience both brands in a contrasting approach. It has an eye-catching exterior inspired by the common shoe box design. The space provides plenty of information and enlightenment into the companies, through fun activities creating a memorable experience for the public to take away with them.

GRADUATE DESIGN INTERNSHIP: THE LIBRARY PROJECT

The proposal is to convert the former library into a performing arts venue. The venue will encompass the following three main elements of income: - Rooms for hire out for rehearsals, teaching or as a meeting space. - Curated events; theatre; dance; comedy (e.g. the project is aiming to provide 3 theatre nights per month; The Library will retain an agreed percentage of ticket sales.) - An area selling refreshments which will act as a cafĂŠ during the day and function as a bar in the evenings. This space could also act as a gallery and be used to exhibition work by local artists/photographers etc.

12 MONTH WORK PLACEMENT SMITH AND ROPER

As part my degree at Nottingham Trent, I spent my third year of study working in industry at a small architecture practice in Bakewell, Derbyshire. Whilst working for Smith and Roper, I was given the opportunity to develop my knowledge of Vectorworks, Google SketchUp and Layout. I was also required to produce visualisations of projects using a combination Adobe Photoshop and SU Podium for SketchUp. In addition to compiling working drawing packs, I regularly attended CPD’s, site meetings and carried out site surveys. Due to the fact that Smith and Roper was a small practice of 10 people given a lot of responsibility and trusted to use my initiative in order to utilise my time well ensuring deadlines were met. This also meant that I gained experience working at all stages of the design process.

ST CHAD’S For the project at St. Chad’s my colleague and I visited the site to survey the entire church building. It was then my responsibility to draw up the working drawings, create a 3D model using Google SketchUp, create visuals of the proposal and create progress presentations for the parish, diocese and benefactors.

ST FINTAN’S I worked on various different stages for the reordering of St Fintan’s. These included furniture design, 3D modelling, selecting materials and colour schemes, sourcing kitchen and bathroom fittings, drafting emails to the client and contractor, drawing up working drawings on Vectorworks.

SMELTER’S COTTAGE This cottage was a ruin before work was carried out. Following a survey I was given the task of deciphering the likely original layout of the building using historic photos, drawings and maps. I then went on to producing drawings of the proposed restoration works for the cottage..
