October 9, 2012 Writer/Contact: Jennifer Mayer 35th Annual Historic Macon flea market to be biggest sale yet MACON, Ga. — For the past 35 years, Historic Macon’s annual flea market has given Maconites the chance to find great deals on fantastic items. This year’s flea market will be the biggest sale yet, as there are so many items that they are overflowing into a second space. Donations are collected year-round and are stored in an 8,000-square-foot warehouse in the Northeast Plaza Shopping Center. This year, Historic Macon has received more donations than 8,000 square feet can hold, and an additional space in the shopping center is being used as a furniture showroom. The flea market has more than a dozen sections with everything from antiques and furniture to electronics, children’s toys and holiday items. A new section will feature items that were repurposed and up-cycled by young, local decorators for Historic Macon’s recent Idea House. The sale will take place Oct. 20 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. and is free and open to the public. The flea market is located in two spaces in the Northeast Plaza Shopping Center at 658 and 668 Shurling Drive. Both are to the right of Rose’s Discount Store and are on either side of the police precinct. A members-only preview party will be held on Oct. 19 from 6 to 9 p.m. and will include Nu-Way catering, beer and wine. Historic Macon members pay $25 to attend and have the first chance to purchase items. Non-members can join at the door to attend the party. About Historic Macon Foundation Historic Macon Foundation is a nonprofit organization that advocates for Macon’s historic and architectural heritage, facilitates preservation and revitalization efforts in the community and educates and inspires appreciation for Macon, GA. March 25, 2011 Writer: Jennifer Mayer Contact: Jenny Williams Georgia Museum of Art announces the Kress Project Athens, Ga. – Fifty years ago, the Samuel H. Kress Foundation gave a small collection of Italian Renaissance paintings to the Georgia Museum of Art (GMOA). To honor that anniversary and further the foundation’s mission of promoting interaction with and scholarship of great works of art, GMOA announces the Kress Project, a two-year initiative that aims to reinvigorate the public’s relationship to these works of art through promoting their contemplation and connections to an array of disciplines. The Kress Gallery features prominently features the 12 Italian paintings from the Trecento and Baroque periods, as well as drawings on extended loan from the collection of Giuliano Ceseri and paintings and furniture on loan from the High Museum of Art’s Kress Collection to contextualize Kress’s gift. The Kress Foundation was founded in 1929 by Samuel H. Kress to see that his collection of more than 3,000 works would be distributed to museums across the nation. The Kress Foundation strives to provide greater access to the works in the collection outside of major urban centers. Among the permanently installed paintings at GMOA is the popular “Madonna and Child” (ca. 1510) by Marco Basaiti. The Kress Project is soliciting responses to GMOA’s Kress Collection paintings through February 2012. Responses can take many forms, including essays, art, choreography or even a recipe inspired by a work in the collection. Details on how to submit entries, submission forms, images of the paintings and more information are available online at www.georgiamuseum.org. “We’re excited at the opportunity to demonstrate the continued relevance of these paintings to a contemporary audience. We hope the array of different responses will surpass our imaginative limits of what is possible,” said Lynn Boland, GMOA Pierre Daura Curator of European Art. GMOA welcomes all ages and education levels to participate in the Kress Project. Responses should be submitted by Feb. 1, 2012. Entries will be posted online and judged by a panel, who will choose 24 winners to be published in a multimedia book and awarded a $500 prize each. Other aspects of the Kress Project include a family guide to the Kress Collection, available for free in the gallery, and a series of related lectures. This project is supported by the Samuel H. Kress Foundation. Museum Information Partial support for the exhibitions and programs at the Georgia Museum of Art is provided by the Georgia Council for the Arts through appropriations of the Georgia General Assembly. The council is a partner agency of the National Endowment for the Arts. Individuals, foundations and corporations provide additional museum support through their gifts to the Arch Foundation and the University of Georgia Foundation. The Georgia Museum of Art is located in the Performing and Visual Arts Complex on the East Campus of the University of Georgia. The address is 90 Carlton Street, University of Georgia, Athens, Ga. 30602-6719. For more information, including hours, see www.georgiamuseum.org or call 706.542.GMOA (4662).

Thursday, December 9, 2010 Writer: Jennifer Mayer Contact: Jenny Williams Georgia Museum of Art “Corpus” wins SECAC research and publication award Athens, Ga. – The Southeastern College Art Conference (SECAC) gave the award for Excellence in Scholarly Research and Publication to the Georgia Museum of Art for its publication, “Corpus of Early Italian Paintings in North American Public Collections: The South.” The author, Perri Lee Roberts of the University of Miami, discusses more than 400 paintings, each with a high-quality reproduction. Three volumes make up this publication, which covers early Italian paintings in public collections in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas and Puerto Rico. The “Corpus” includes a collection of 12 paintings in the Georgia Museum of Art. The publication comprises works by artists from all regions in Italy, including Giovanni Bellini, Duccio di Buoninsegna, Fra Angelico, Sandro Botticelli, Andrea Mantegna and Giotto. Provenance, iconography and bibliography appear with each illustration, making the “Corpus” valuable to scholars, educators and curators of early Italian art. In 1993, Professor Bruce Cole of Indiana University and the late Professor Andrew Ladis of the University of Georgia initiated the project of the “Corpus” publications, which would catalogue and illustrate every Italian painting on panel and canvas dating between 1250 and 1500 in public collections across North America, with its first part focusing on the American South. Each year, SECAC recognizes exemplary work in the visual arts in higher education. GMOA received the award at the annual conference, which was held October 20–23 in Richmond, Va. In 2009, GMOA received the award for Outstanding Exhibition and Catalogue of Historical Materials for “The American Scene on Paper: Prints and Drawings from the Schoen Collection.” SECAC is a nonprofit organization that seeks to facilitate cooperation and ongoing dialogue about pertinent creative, scholarly and educational issues among teachers and administrators in universities, colleges, community colleges, professional art schools and museums. The organization includes 12 southeastern states and has expanded to include members nationwide. Museum Information Partial support for the exhibitions and programs at the Georgia Museum of Art is provided by the Georgia Council for the Arts through appropriations of the Georgia General Assembly. Friday, October 9, 2009 Writer: Jennifer Mayer Contact: Jenny Williams Georgia Museum of Art wins three publication awards Athens, Ga. – The Georgia Museum of Art (GMOA) received three awards for its publications from the Southeastern Museums Conference (SEMC). The winning entries will be on display from October 13–17 at the annual SEMC meeting in Charleston, W.Va. “The American Scene on Paper: Prints and Drawings from the Schoen Collection,” an exhibition catalogue, received a gold award for content. The art in the catalogue reflects the many changes that occurred in the United States during the Great Depression and World War II. The traveling exhibition, which includes a selection of the works on paper, was most recently on view at the Columbus Museum in Columbus, Ga. The catalogue includes full-page color images of all 153 works on paper along with information about each work, artists’ biographies and an essay by historian Harry Katz. “The Historian’s Eye: Essays on Italian Art in Honor of Andrew Ladis” is a festschrift in honor of the late Franklin Professor of Art History at the University of Georgia’s Lamar Dodd School of Art. “The Historian’s Eye” comprises many papers presented at a conference at the University of Georgia in 2006 that honored Ladis. The publication, edited by Hayden B.J. Maginnis and Shelley E. Zuraw, received a gold for content in the SEMC competition. Maginnis is professor of art history and director of the School of the Arts at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario. Zuraw has taught Italian Renaissance and Baroque art at the University of Georgia since 1992. “The Ring Shows: Then & Now and Putting the Band Back Together” received a silver award for graphic design. The original National Ring Show was a no-budget, juried exhibition that included rings made with no parameters or guidelines. Selected rings became part of a permanent collection at UGA. “The Ring Shows” includes more than 60 rings that represented the early exhibitions as well as new rings by the same artists and rings by new artists as part of a new juried show. The publication was designed by Brett MacFadden, and like the rings it shows, is made of inexpensive materials that mirror its content. “We are all excited and pleased to receive these awards from our peers, especially as the range of publications being honored shows our pursuit of excellence both in teaching and in research,” said William U. Eiland, director of the Georgia Museum of Art. SEMC is a nonprofit membership organization that serves Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. SEMC fosters professionalism, mutual support and communication among its members and the larger museum community.
