About Us Connections Volunteer Center What we do Founded in 1996, Connections coordinates the referral and placement of volunteers for more than 100 different agencies who offer more than 300 volunteer opportunities. In the past year, Connections matched 1,000 volunteers who engaged in over 20,000 hours of service to the community. An affiliate of HelpLine of Delaware and Morrow Counties, Inc., we are funded by United Way of Delaware County and Council for Older Adults of Delaware County. Our Mission Connections, the Delaware County Volunteer Center, is the central clearinghouse for volunteering to contribute to a healthy Delaware County. Our Vision Connections is the key local source for volunteering in Delaware County, bringing people together to meet the needs of community programs and acting as a catalyst for social change. We see it in the workplace, home, youth groups, sports, local and national news but most of all at school. According to the Delaware County Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) conducted during the 2009-2010 school year 944 out of 4785 Delaware County high school students were bullied on school property within the last year. Knowing how common bullying has become, its important we teach our students, children, and ourselves, to not only take a look at the roles we play in bullying but the steps to eliminate it. Current legislation, school policies and laws regarding bullying will be discussed by law enforcement. As well as online dangers and present practical strategies to help children and teens learn to use the Internet safely and responsibly. Learning objectives: ■ Recognize the importance of the role of the bystander. ■ Gain awareness of the seriousness of physical bullying, relational aggression and cyberbullying (including sexting). ■ Understand the harmful/hurtful effects bullying has on both victims and bystanders. Presenter Bios: Brande Urban, BA, has 20 yrs of experience working with youth. As School Outreach Manager for Youth to Youth International, she worked and consulted with 65 high schools and 128 middle schools to provide youth-led prevention programming; facilitated weekly county-wide Youth Advisory Board Meetings. Brande co-facilitates the STAND UP Leadership Team (SULT!).

Officer Don Stanko, is the Crime Prevention and Community Relations Officer for Upper Arlington Police Department. Presentations always are well received by both student and parent audiences. Officer Stanko will be addressing Internet safety issues including using privacy settings on Facebook and other social media, sexting, location tracking through camera and cell phone settings, and cyberbullying.

January - March 2012 Wednesday, March 14 Personal Safety Options for Professionals This interactive training provides participants with effective strategies for dealing with potentially dangerous situations.

Scenarios that will be addressed cover a range of interactions from handling uncomfortable/difficult conversations, to dealing with verbal confrontations, to interrupting physical and/or sexual assaults. Participants will learn and practice setting appropriate psychological and physical boundaries, as well as other strategies intended to reduce vulnerability. While there are no guarantees in any dangerous situation, participants will learn skills that will increase their options. Skills provided empower individuals to take action, to avoid, interrupt, address or engage unsafe situations. This 3-hour class will involve the practice of verbal and physical techniques that don‘t require a level of fitness and can be modified, if needed. However, since we will be moving around, participants are encouraged to wear comfortable clothes that allow for freedom of movement. Learn suicide first aid. The vast majority of those thinking about suicide will find some way to signal their intent. Most suicidal people are looking for another option. They don‘t want to die. But preventing suicide takes two people—a helper and the person at risk. ASIST, a model program developed by Living Works, is designed to help persons in a position of trust become more willing, ready and able to help persons at risk for suicide. Just as ―CPR‖ skills make physical first aid possible, training in suicide intervention develops the skills used in suicide first aid. ASIST is a two-day intensive, interactive and practice-dominated course designed to help caregivers recognize risk and learn how to intervene to prevent the immediate risk of suicide. Participants receive a 152-page Suicide Intervention Handbook and a full color, tear-resistant pocket card featuring intervention, and risk review and safe plan development principles. This course is designed for all caregivers including professionals, physicians, teachers, counselors, youth workers, police and correctional staff, school support staff, clergy and community volunteers. Presenter Bios: Julianna Nemeth, MA, is currently pursuing a PhD in Health Behavior Health Promotion through the College of Public Health at Ohio State University while working as a Graduate Research Associate on a research project focused on the prevention of cervical cancer in Appalachia. Julianna worked for HelpLine of Delaware and Morrow Counties, Inc. from 2005-2010 as the Prevention Director. Ms. Nemeth holds a B.A. in Religion from Wittenberg University and an M.A. in Women‘s Studies from Ohio State University. Involved as a volunteer and professional with social justice advocacy work since the mid-1990s, Ms. Nemeth is a certified trainer for ASIST, i-SAFE, Stewards of Children and LifeSkills. She convened the Delaware County Suicide Prevention Coalition from 2005-2010 and the PEACE (Prevention Education in All Classroom Environments) Collaborative from 2008-2009 and served as the co-chair of the Ohio Sexual and Intimate Partner Violence Prevention Consortium from 2004-2010. Julianna worked to found the Ohio Alliance to End Sexual Violence, a statewide coalition addressing sexual violence and its prevention. Presenter Bios (continued): Chaplain (Colonel) Andrew Aquino was promoted to position of State Chaplain for the Ohio National Guard in January of 2010. As such, he manages and oversees the recruiting, training and management of the Ohio National Guard‘s 32 Chaplain Teams and is responsible for managing the Ohio National Guard‘s spiritual and moral support programs for approximately 17,000 soldiers and airmen. Chaplain Aquino became an Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) trainer in 2006 and has trained over 500 participants in the ASIST workshop attaining the level of Master Trainer with Livingworks Education, Inc . After earning a Bachelor of Science Degree in Literature from Liberty University and a Master of Divinity Degree from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, he was ordained to ministry with the American Baptist Churches, USA (ABCUSA). Chaplain Aquino has served as a Military Chaplain for 23 years and is currently assigned to the Joint Force Headquarters, Ohio National Guard. He has also taught in the Public School system, and served as parish minister for 15 years. Chaplain Aquino is the Strong Bonds program manager for Ohio; an Army program for enriching the relationships of married service members. Chaplain Aquino was deployed to Kosovo in 2004 and to Iraq in 2005. He is married 29 years to wife, Tammy, and they have four children.

Make a Difference Day 2012 Get hands on volunteer training at the upcoming Connections Volunteer Center Make a Difference Day Ohio (MDDO), America's largest day of volunteer service, on Saturday, October 27, 2012. MDDO mobilizes local volunteers to ‗go out and make a difference‘ in their communities. Contrary to popular myth, self-mutilation rarely represents a suicide attempt and is typically viewed by the individual as an act of self-nurturance and suicide prevention. This training will provide a research-based overviews of the causes, treatment and prevention strategies for self-mutilation. Correlations to psychiatric illness such as depression, bipolar disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, and obsessive-compulsive disorder will also be discussed. Learning objectives:

Understand how PTSD, borderline personality, major depression and substance abuse can lead to self destructive behavior. Manage the manipulation and frustration of borderline personality clients. Differentiate the causes and motivations of suicide attempts from self injurious behavior. Comprehend the reasons for teenage suicide. Presenter Bio:

Bruce Maaser, Ph.D., is a licensed psychologist in Ohio and New York, and is a member of the American and Ohio Psychological Associations and the National Academy of Neuropsychology. Since obtaining a Ph.D. in Educational Psychology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison 23 years ago, he has also taught at Luther College in Iowa and Indiana. Dr. Maaser currently supervises the Crisis Stabilization Unit of the Correctional Reception Center in Orient, Ohio. This unit provides initial management and treatment for male inmates who are suicidal, self-injurious, seriously depressed, or psychotic as they enter the Ohio prison system. August 2012 Substance Abuse - Tuesday, August 7 Substance Abuse Treatment for Persons with CoOccurring Disorders Empowering adults with consciousness and choices to help protect children from sexual abuse.

This presentation will be an overview of substance abuse and dependence diagnosis and treatment. Various treatment models will be presented along with criteria for levels of care. Participants will be provided information on the prevalence of chemical dependency within the various Axis I criteria for Schizophrenia, Bipolar, Major Depression, Schizo-Affective Disorder and other major mental illnesses. There will be discussion regarding the effect on the brain of chronic substance abuse and the importance of symptom management and recovery. Learning objectives: ■ Be able to identify the difference between abuse and dependence with an introduction to the changes in regards to substance disorder in the upcoming DSM-V. ■ Understand the levels of care for treatment of dual diagnosis clients with an emphasis on integrated screening, assessment and treatment planning. ■ Gain knowledge in the various treatment approaches that are effective, appropriate and client centered. Presenter Bio: Joe Catania LISW-S, LCDCIII, received his BA in Social Work at Ohio University and his MSW at The Ohio State University. He has 20 years experience in the mental health and addictions field. Mr. Catania is currently the Clinical Director of the Partial Hospitalization Program at The Woods at Parkside in Columbus, Ohio. The Partial Hospitalization Program serves the SAMI (Substance Abuse Mentally Ill) population and is funded through Medicare. Mr. Catania also has been in private practice for the past 6 years as an Independent Practicing Affiliate with The Center for Cognitive and Behavioral Counseling of Greater Columbus. Joe is currently a Collaborating Clinical Investigator involved in the field trials for changes in the DSM-V.

This program is designed to help you deal with toxic people. These individuals have a remarkable ability to precipitate conflict and disharmony in virtually all of their relationships, including their relationships with health care providers. These ―high-conflict‖ people provoke stress-related illnesses, diminish self-worth, keep us awake and upset, enable bad habits and typically lack insight or remorse. In this new 6-hour program, learn how to reason with ―unreasonable‖ people and develop the art of the possible when dealing with the ―impossible‖ individual. Emphasis will be placed on practical strategies and applications for medical, dental and behavioral settings. Learning objectives: ■ Describe the diagnostic criteria for toxic or high-conflict individuals, including disorders of personality, mood, anxiety, anger modulation and substance abuse ■ Discuss empirical findings regarding the etiology of the toxic personality, including aspects of social reasoning, atypical brain chemistry, pathological parenting style and the effects of early childhood trauma ■ List several strategic, evidence-based approaches that health care professionals can employ in order to deal effectively and ethically with toxic individuals while maintaining their own sense of balance and psychological health. Presenter Bio: Joseph Shannon received his Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology in 1982 from the Ohio State University and has over 20 years of successful clinical experience as a psychologist, consultant and trainer. An expert in understanding and treating a broad range of adult psychopathology, Dr. Shannon has appeared on several television programs including the ―CBS Morning Program‖ and ―PBS Viewpoint.‖ Dr. Shannon has developed and implemented training programs for medical and mental health professionals around the country. Anorexia is the most lethal of mental illnesses. Our culture's obsession with appearance and beauty is fueled by advertising and constantly exposes our children to the pressures to conform to the ―thin ideal‖. Recent research has confirmed that genetic and biological factors significantly contribute to the development of eating disorders. Early detection and intervention is essential for successful treatment at an outpatient level of care. Amy will present information on the basics of eating disorder treatment and offer insight into how new research on the neuro-biology of eating disorders is impacting the treatment experience. Amy worked as an eating disorder specialist at The Center for Balanced Living in Worthington, OH for seven and a half years and is considered an expert in the field.
