Brief This year Unit 3 will continue its fascination with the intersection of craft and technology, the real and the virtual and the digital and the analogue by exploring the concept of alchemy. Alchemy is the ancient process of turning base materials into precious objects. Early forms of alchemy evolved through the necessity of trade and art, and led to key advancements in numerous manufacturing processes including metal work, glass, soaps and dyes. For early alchemists the transformations taking place in front of their eyes were explained through magic with potions and incantations used to perfect their skill.

Water and Reßections Introducing my Project 1, I have chosen the element Water. More speciÞcally I found interest in reßections due to their therapeutic qualities. Pure underwater atmospheres are considered as psychologically calming and transmit a peaceful feeling towards the human body and brain. My Þrst step into the project has been a photo survey that analysed a variety of household objects and their reßections.

Acrylic Installation Inspired by Artist Chris Wood and his artwork “Glass Installations” I have attempted to create an installation from Acrylic. By combining clear and toned acrylic into a domino and exposing it to different light conditions, the goal was to achieve an interesting reßection-effect.

Similar to prior, the second experiment has also been created from clear and toned acrylic. By taking inspiration

sculpture which when exposed to light creates a very water-like reßection around itself.

Conservatory From the very beginning the space that caught my eye has been the conservatory. Its bright entrance can be seen from the breakfast room. When entering the space it is due to the minimalistic elements of the space and the great lighting conditions which create a peaceful atmosphere.

A Healing Space The main Idea of the Design was to create a space to rest. Hearing that some people get their best ideas in the shower has pushed the design into a wellness space such as a bathroom or spa. As previous acrylic would play a special role by creating both privacy and calmness.

Creating Privacy Even though clear Acrylic is transparent it is possible to create different opacities by layering pieces together. The photo study above shows four stages of opacity: clear, quite blurred, blurred and very blurred. Using this technique I am aiming to create privacy and transparency in speciÞc parts of my design.

Collage 1 This Collage focuses on elements from the Dongdaemun Design Plaza by Zaha Hadid. When thinking about the „Clerkenwell Community and Wellness Center“ the goal is to achieve a futuristic and dynamic design, as well as a modern and comfortable space for cyclists to gather.

Collage 2 Similar to the first collage, the second one also consist of elements from the Design Plaza. Although this Collage highlights a very important element of the project: bicycle ramps. Another aspect which can be communicated through the Collages is the use of deconstructive spaces troughout the building.

Collage 3 For this Collage elements of Eero Saarinen‘s TWA Terminal have been reused and set into a different tone. Large concrete and window structures combined in a curved and fluid design will be part of the main project.
