Every drop of your blood counts.

In celebration of the Mapua PTC – CMET Week 2014, Malayan Society of Mariners together with Philippine Red Cross collected 87 blood bags from the MCL community at E.T Yuchengco Lobby.

DROP: Give Life, Give Blood – CMET Spearheads Bloodletting Program

On its second year, Mapua - PTC College of Maritime Education and Training (CMET), Malayan Socie t y of M a r i ne r s (MSM), Philippine Red Cross and its volunteers, organized a bloodletting project as one of the main events of CMET Week 2014. “It started with the urge of helping those who are in need” says Patrick Ambrosio, president of Malayan Society of Mariners. “The blood drive aims not only to help those we know personally. We strive to start a new tradition of helping others with anonymity and without bias, “he added. Also, the said project calls for the sense of volunteerism, community service, and saving lives not only for the future seafarers and members of Mapua PTC, but also to the whole MCL community. Collecting 71 blood bags from last year’s project, the said event made a remarkable impact that the number of blood bags collected today increased with great number.

Not only MCL receives a certificate of recognition for its active participation in bloodletting projects but also, it changes lives of people who will benefit from the said cause. “That’s the thing about this project; we don’t really know where it goes,” says Patrick, when asked about the true essence of this project. “It doesn’t hurt that much and it feels good to help others” says Ailene Alcain, first time blood donor. Donating blood helps regenerate new red blood cells, thus, giving the donor a healthier body. Also, Philippine Red Cross calls for regular blood donors who would like to take part of the said cause, and become a hero in one’s life. To know donate blood, call (049) 557 – 180 or visit Philippine Red Cross – Laguna Chapter at J. De Leon St. Corner P. Guevarra Ave. Capitol CMPD. Sta. Cruz Laguna.

MCL Professors Launch English Textbooks

Five English professors from the College of Arts and Science hav successfully launched four new textbooks at the E.T. Yuchengo Lobby last June 17.

T h e E n g l i s h f o r t h e Wo r k p l a c e s e r i e s i s a collaboration between Prof. Jhona Niem-Gamez, Prof. Remilyn Getuiza Mondez, and Prof. Ma. Rovilla C. Sudaprasert. The series aims to increase the english proficiency of MCL students especially in the work place. The series of books is expected to help students a nd graduates in improv ing t heir communication sk i l ls, a nd ma k ing t hem more globally competitive. The book series was designed to attain mastery of the English language through a comprehensive discussion in reading and listening, writing and speaking — the basic skills that give students the greatest advantage in the industry. According to Prof. Gamez, the books have been in development years ago and are already used as a guide in teaching the students, but this is the only time that they have been published. Because of this achievement, the English for the Workplace series will now be available nationwide. She also said that another book is also planned in preparation for the K-12 system. On the other hand, Voyages in Maritime English takes on a different approach in addressing the

needs of students in expressing marine terminologies though a focused discussion of Maritime English. It was made possible with the collaboration of Prof. Christine Joanne Librero-Desacado and Prof. Hjalmar Punla Hernandez who both teach the said course. “We are actually requesting the readers, teachers and students, to assess the content of the book,” said Prof. Herna ndez. This is to prov ide t hem t he information on what to change and what to revise for the updated version of the book. “Writing a book is hard, publishing it is even harder,” said BA Communication-Multimedia Arts program chair Prof. Oliver Castillo, proving that the five books wouldn’t come to pass without the collaboration and cooperation of the f ive professors, Ms. Cristina Macascas, coordinator and Ms. Virginia Gapuz of Great Books Publishing. Published by Great Books Publishing, the English for the Workplace series and Voyages in Maritime English are available at the Blue and Silver Shop and National Bookstore.

De La Salle University – Manila (DLSU-Manila) hosted its second Student Media Congress (SMC) with over a thousand delegates from different educational institutions and academic fields gathered under one roof. Three delegates from Malayan Colleges Laguna’s Multimedia Arts showed their talents in different competing workshops. Maria Camille Cachapero, 3rd year and winner of 3rd place in the same competition, said, “Marami kaming matututunan, tapos pinapaapply kaagad nila yung mga natutunan namin sa araw na yon.” On the other hand, winner of first place in the competing workshop of Glamour Photography, 3rd year Renee Isabelle Salgado, in relation to the speakers told us, “First day was fine. Achievement Unlocked:

Time checked: 3:35 pm 5th June, 2016 June 1, 2016. A day after officially getting out of college and being officially unemployed, my friends and I decided to go for another adventure. I’ve heard this place before from a very dear friend, Lian. Unfortunately, our plans of going there never happened due to our conflicting schedule so I have to consider going out with my college buddies there. Ever since, I’ve been reading a lot of blog posts about this place located in Antipolo, Rizal. Seeing this place, I am convinced that I need to see this goddamn place. And because I was feeling feisty going out and having adventure either on my own or with a friend (days before graduation), our vague plans of going there finally came into reality. Yes, one of my college buddies were asking me to go there. Something is holding me back those days. It’s either the time or my funds will not let me, or my paranoid self is there to tell me about the worst case scenarios that could happen. And because one of my friend celebrated her 21st, and my other two friends as a first-timer, I am convinced to drag them around with me... knowing that it is my first time too, and I do not really have any idea on where the vans located at or where the PUJ terminal is . But I do know, where we are going and how to get there. We were supposed to leave at nine, but then F i l i p i n o t i m e h a ppen s. We rod e a b us to Buendia, and MRT to Cubao to avoid the traffic. And yes, hello to my first-timer friend, Miya to officially ride the MRT. Oh yes, we are the kids from the south who rarely have a valid reason to go to the north. I am really anxious to ride a van that day for I know, it is a forty-minute ride. I have this tendency to caught a little motion sickness in vans because of the limited space inside to move... and to breathe too. Plus, PUJs are the best ride for me, because I could enjoy the full view of where we are, and full grasp of air... or smoke. It’s a good thing we sat at the back, and yes, I survived. I am in awe of the road trip going there. It feels like I am back in Liliw again. Something that keeps me away from thve busy streets of the city. Rode a five-minute trike, and arrived at Pinto Art Museum around past twelve.

Because we were all starving, we decided to eat first on the first sight of cafe... only to find out later on that there are other cafes downstairs. Food is kind of pricey but expect to have a full blown stomach afterwards. I hate that I did not use my other camera that day to take more photos.. I guess it is another reason to comeback. I fell in love with some of the paintings, art installations and models... but some freaked me out and gave me chills. I saw some of their displays beforehand in Art Fair 2016 in Makati City. But what captivated me was their Santorini picturesque. I fell in love with the white walls, and antique chandeliers, and door knobs. I fell in love with the open space and the windows. The place gave me peace from within... even with a number of visitors that day. As much as I wanted to sit around and grab a pen and paper to write about things, I can not... we are bound with time, and I am not on my own that day. So yeap, with the limited time we feasted o u r eye s a n d l et o u r fe et l e a d u s to wherever. Forgive me for the limited photos, but as much as I wanted to... I wanted you to go and let you see its magnificence with your very own eyes. Go forth and make your own adventure. p.s. I think Pinto Art Museum is planning to extend its premises. Definitely, another reason to comeback. p.p.s. Backpacks are not allowed inside the galleries. You’ll be ask to leave your bag in the baggage center.

“ Literature, creative writing, reading

and vocabulary words. Indeed, it was the one of the most underrated subject during my senior year in high school. I guess because not all of us, would have enough time to have a break with ourselves, to read a good book and to get lost in both worlds. On the other hand, I do enjoy a solitary moment of flipping pages of a good read in the comfort of my bed. Now I am on my senior year in college, I think it all makes sense. With the amass of books-turned-into-movies, people learned to read books of different genres and appreciate metaphors not only in books but in real life. How will I make sense of literature? Is it by writing more of poems or any random thoughts in my blog as a form or escape or boredom? Is it by reading more of literary pieces? I think, it is… and probably not the only way to make sense of literature. I strongly believe that I could make sense of literature, by trying to get back on the old phase of my life, wherein I could read as much books as I want. Maybe after that, harnessing all the lost time, and interest in old books, I think I will not

Diversity is good. Different ideas may spark, but if all men are capable of opening themselves in all possibilities of life, probably, we are not living in a mad world. ran out of the right words to describe how my day was, to fully express my opinions and to put leaking thoughts out of pen and paper. I believe making sense literature is not only by expressing it through the tip of our tongues, but also in adapting its metaphors in life, as reading in between the lines – not taking each words literally but thinking outside of the box. If all men are capable of it, probably, the world could be a better place. I guess, making sense of literature, is having the capability of transforming these words into something useful or close into our own reality…something that could help us shape it into something better. Diversity is good. Different ideas may spark, but if all men are capable of opening themselves in all possibilities of life, probably, we are not living in a mad world. I believe that is the best way, I could make sense of literature, when I could totally open and embrace all the possibilities in life and let everything fall into its place. If things are getting worse, then it is the only time, I could interfere and fix it.

Blessed are those whom writers write about, for their existence was made into significance.
