Preface When I began to plan my own wedding I remember feeling a sense of insecurity, fear and apprehension. I had no experience of weddings. I had honestly never in my wildest dreams even thought about my own wedding. I had convinced myself that love was a thing of fairytale and fiction that happened to someone else. When my husband proposed to me I was mortified and lost, I had no idea how to begin to plan a wedding and certainly couldn’t see how it was all going to come together in harmony! My sister married a year before me and her wedding was so beautiful, big, grand and stylish! My sister has a natural gift for style, she makes it look effortless and always seems to know what will work instinctively. She had such a vision for her day, she planned and styled the best wedding. Vibrant with pinks and subtle with ivory tones, it was chic, sophisticated and modern. This meant I had a lot to live up to. So terrified, I began to trail through wedding magazine after magazine. I searched endlessly on the internet, collected as much advice from family and friends as I could and soon I ignited a passion and a skill within myself for weddings, style, jewellery, flowers....... I didn’t know I had. I was so inspired that half way through the planning of my own wedding, I picked up the jewellery making kit that had grown dust in my mother’s loft. I decided I would make my own tiara. Well before I knew it I had ten tiaras! I just couldn’t stop creating! Soon my friends were asking me to make jewellery for their weddings and as a result Bespoken For launched in 2007. Now Bespoken For is going from strength to strength, we specialise in customer focussed bespoke design, offering jewellery, invitations, garters, as well as make-up and styling advice for brides. Being creative and working with Bespoken For, I have found that brides are now more stylish than ever, and I spend hours contemplating and researching trends and style and advising clients. I am so privileged to assist brides to make their day all it can be. I Jenni on her Wedding Day believe that bespoke is not about design, it’s about you, your day, your dreams, your personality, your budget... your wedding! And I believe style is the same. It cannot be bought; you do not need money to have style. You have the tools and I want to help you to use them.

Chapter One Your Bridal Style Personality matters If you are reading this book I am hoping it is because you are lucky enough to be in the swing of planning your wedding. In which case you have met your lifelong partner who has fallen head over heels in love with you. They fell in love with your personality didn’t they? So you know you must have something special to work with! When choosing your outfit and accessories your personality counts. You wouldn’t let yourself wear something you don’t like or that wouldn’t match how you behave, would you? But do be aware that personality doesn’t always give you style or flatter your features. When consulting yourself about your personality ask yourself: 1. What styles do I like? 2. What colours do I like? 3. Who are my style icons? 4. How would I describe myself? (Loud; quiet; friendly; energetic; elegant?) 5. How would I like to be seen on my wedding day? (stunning; elegant; unusual; chic; wow?) Now you have delved deeper into your personal style and answered some key questions we can combine your personality, tastes and your features to create your ultimate bridal look. I like to look at personalities like Seasons: Summer – You are bold, bright and fun loving. You love to make a statement and be centre of attention. You can be loud, you are a bit of a risk taker as you live for the moment and you always get things done. You are great with people and a loyal friend. You have bucket loads of common sense. Autumn – You are natural and down to earth. You are warm hearted popular and conscientious in all you do. Others are important and you often put them first. You have traditional values and have a strong sense of responsibility. You can be insecure and often need reminding just how special you are. You shy away from conflict and appreciate natural beauty. You are also very open-minded and
9
creative. You can be quiet and reflective and you can always see potential and possibilities in any situation. Winter – You are cool, sophisticated and glamorous; practical, traditional and organised. You value security and safety as this is where you feel confident. You are serious, can be quiet and like a peaceful life. You are very responsible and dependable and you can concentrate well. Tradition is important to you. You work hard and set yourself goals. Once you have your mind set on something you like to achieve it. Spring - You are youthful and vibrant. Your have a creative flair and can put your hand to almost anything that interests you. New ideas excite you and you are very open minded with a flexible attitude. You are practical and interested in the how and why. You can be quiet and appreciative of beauty. Now I know we are not stereotypes. I don’t expect you to put your personality into a box exactly, we are all individuals and share many qualities. The purpose of this exercise is so I can show you some great ways of accessorising with your personality and style, to guide you into your own direction. (Do not get confused with seasonal colour schemes and personality. Just because you have a bold personality doesn’t mean you will look good in a bold colour!) Do any of these seasons describe you? Which one do you have the most in common with? Which seasons do you lean to? We will use the seasons later to find our style colours and best accessories.
Fashion & Trends Weddings are always in fashion and trends are always great ways to style yourself to now. There is nothing wrong with wanting the super styled fashionable wedding and trends are great to modernise any look. Keep in the know with the latest bridal fashion and trend, but proceed with caution. Like everyday fashion, what’s hot today may not be tomorrow, so when you choose the latest style ask yourself: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6.
Is it likely to date quickly? Is it ........(how you wanted to be seen on you day: Elegant? Glamorous? etc) Is it classic style? Does it match my personality? Does it flatter and enhance my features? Am I going to look back at my photographs in ten years time and wonder what was I thinking?
10 www.BespokenFor.co.uk – The Place for Bespoke Bridal Jewellery
The most important aspect when making your decisions for your wedding is you need to be totally honest with yourself, even when you don’t want to be. You need to choose wisely and make the right decisions as wrong choices can’t be undone after your day! My advice is to go with your personal style and tastes rather than latest fashions and trends. If you want your look to be up to date, wear a classic dress and latest accessory. Accessories will give you the modern look you want, they are less likely to date and you can wear them again and again.
Finding Your Style Now that we have discussed how personality and fashion affect our choices we will find our styles according to our personalities.

Fashion & Trend Choices Your personality can carry off latest fashion and trends, but if you are playing it safe, accessorise with hair adornments and bangles, as they are always in trend. Your daring nature means you can mix and match fashion trends into your look. The key is to balance the daring side of you and not overdo it. Shoes are a great way to add funky

attitude to your look. You play it safe with fashion, sticking to classical styles and it works. So keep it up. You need not waste energy on latest gimmicks and trends as your wedding style is always in fashion. Your style needs no fashion fads. Glamour writes it’s own rules. Stick with what you know and if you really want to add latest trends find the best bling you can.
Think about romantic Classical accessories like this Vintage Rose Tiara or the effloresce necklace.
The Glamour Collection is ultimate chic cool crystal.
Hopefully this has inspired you and you are developing a sense of your personal style, or at least how to go about finding you own style.
Make your own notes and can come back to your style ideas later and put your wedding accessories together.

Chapter Two Your Wedding Budget
Budgeting for Accessories When it comes to weddings your budget either gives you wings or holds you down. Luckily style has no price tag, so if you are finding that your budget is doing the latter don’t feel that your style needs to be compromised. Jewellery is expensive, particularly bridal jewellery. You only get a few opportunities to wear such fabulous jewellery and a few excuses to treat yourself, grab the chance while you can. I suggest that when calculating your costs, you should expect to spend at least 10% of your budget on jewellery (including rings and things); so if your budget is £8,000 you will probably spend at least £800 on your jewellery! Although it is down to personal prefences.
Splurge or Save? When you choose your jewellery think about the long term life of the jewellery. If you buy something you are likely to wear again, then that’s not an expense, it is an investment! So stretch the budget if you can as jewellery you will use is always good value for money. I always advise brides to buy sterling silver, gold or gold filled jewellery rather than plated pieces, as you cannot polish plated jewellery. If you are a sentimental soul like me your wedding jewellery is bound to be a keepsake and you will treasure it, so make sure you invest wisely. If a little extra cost will guarantee you have a really special piece of jewellery to keep as an heirloom then write off the extra expense. Always buy your jewellery with wear-ability in mind. Necklaces, earrings and bracelets will always be valued in your jewellery box as they are great to wear again and again. Choose your jewellery with clear crystals and Ivory pearls and you are almost guaranteed they will match any outfit, including adding every day glamour to your favourite jeans! 13
Pins, grips and combs are a nice addition to your jewellery collection, you shouldn’t need an excuse to add sparkle into your day but if you do they are great for entertaining, dining out, parties, weddings or celebrations. Now we all know tiaras are not really items we will wear again. But it is the tiara that transforms you into the bride and when else are you really going to get the opportunity to wear such a fabulous accessory (other than the plastic one on your hen night!). So push the boat out. Tiaras can be wrapped in acid free tissue paper and stored safely - you could possibly pass it on to a special person in years to come, or if you really don’t want to keep it you could have the beads removed and made into something you would wear again. Many jewellery designers will be happy to quote to do this for you and as you supply the beads cost will be lower. Alternatively there are some fabulous converting tiaras on the market which can be worn as necklaces or bracelets after the big day, so you definitely can wear it again, and fancy how great it sounds when someone complements your jewellery to say “it was my tiara from my wedding!”
Poetry Iris Hair Pins & Bespoke Converting Tiara (converts to a necklace) Earrings are Glamour Briolettes all By Bespoken For.
If you really don’t want to spend too much on your jewellery, less is always more so look out for key pieces which you will wear again and borrow the rest off family and friends (if they will let you!). Bespoken For will also hire out jewellery and offer interest free instalments to help you manage you wedding budget.
Budgeting for Bridesmaids Your bridesmaids will want to look great on your day as although they will not be centre of attention they will be sharing some of your limelight. Young bridesmaids love to feel like princesses on your big day, so do all you can to make them feel like they are special. Older bridesmaids too love to feel as if you have treated them and they are an important part of your day. Bespoke Brides & Bridesmaids Jewellery all designed and made to meet the needs and desires of the wearers by Bespoken For
14 www.BespokenFor.co.uk – The Place for Bespoke Bridal Jewellery
When it comes to the bridesmaids don’t feel obliged to purchase all their accessories and dresses, but you will definitely need to buy them a gift. Many bridesmaids are happy to contribute towards their dresses provided they get a say in what they will be wearing. Jewellery is a great way to treat your attendants and accessorise them all at the same time and you could even have jewellery made up to complement or echo the designs of your accessories, continuing your theme. I would suggest that you calculate how much you are prepared to spend in total on your bridesmaids accessories and split the cost between the number of bridesmaids. Always shop around and if buying in more than one piece speak to your designer - you may even manage to negotiate a discount. If you don’t ask you don’t get!
15
Chapter Three Your Themes and Schemes Your Wedding Theme Wedding themes and schemes are important in the flow of your wedding. It could be based around a colour, love or hobby, but the theme will bring all the elements of your day together. Even if you have not specifically chosen a theme or scheme your wedding will have something you can work with to tie it together. Try to work out the mood or the inspiration behind your day as this will help you to style yourself. Collect cuttings, swatches and write all your ideas down to create your inspiration scrapbook, collage or mood board. This will help you with styling your day. (For more styling advice check out my other book ‘The Modern Brides Style Bible’ available from Bespoken For.)
Your Colour Scheme The use of colour in your wedding scheme really can enhance your look and style. When it comes to choosing colours don’t feel that you have to just stick to one shade or one colour. Colours work best with colours. You probably already have a colour scheme in mind for your wedding. Be prepared to be flexible with it, as unless you intend to wear the colour yourself, you must consult with everyone who you want to put in that colour. For your bridesmaids you must bear in mind that not all colours suit every skin 16 www.BespokenFor.co.uk – The Place for Bespoke Bridal Jewellery
tone. Choose your colour scheme with your bridesmaids in mind, ask them what colours they like and what colours suit them. I know this only too well, I am pale skinned and when I was a bridesmaid trying on dresses, my sister picked out a lovely lilac she had thought about. On the Maid of Honour it looked lovely, but on me.. well I looked ill, the colour washed my skin tone and drained me! Skin tones are either warm or cool. Cool skin tones have blue undertones and look great in pastels, dusky pinks, reds, certain shades of blue, hot pinks and aqua greens. With cool skin tones avoid earthy shades as these will look bad. Warm skin tones have pink undertones and suit spices, caramels, beiges, oranges, greens and peaches, but don’t suit bright shades so well. A rule of thumb is to normally go three shades lighter or darker than the skin tone to avoid draining the colour from them. My top tip for choosing your colour scheme is pop to your local DIY shop and get some paint charts. These are great as they have so many shades and tones. Show them to your bridesmaids and hold the colours up to their skin to see if they react to them. This is an easy and cheap way and can be done easily over coffee rather than getting undressed and trying clothes on. Think also about the season of your wedding as certain colour schemes work best in certain seasons. Once you have some shades you can cut them out of your paint chart and take them to the wedding shop to try and match up with their swatches. You may not get the exact shade but you should find something close. The great thing about using paint charts is they often match colours up for you, so you are shown what colours work well together and this can really help style your whole wedding look. When working with colour you can do three things: 1. Use lighter or darker shades of one colour to add depth and class. 2. You can co-ordinate colours to complement each other. 3. You can use contrasting colours, to add vibrancy and effect. If you look at the colour wheel (p18) you will see that complementing colours sit next to each other where as contrasting colours are opposite each other. Too much of any one colour will make the overall look bland and tasteless, so don’t get stuck on just one colour. If you really lack confidence in co-ordinating your colour scheme, opt for white and accessorise with colour. You will find that you can create a stylish look simply and effectively. 17

Chapter Four The Rules
The Rules to Choosing Your Jewellery 1. Choose Your Dress – Before you do anything you must choose your dress. 2. Attention To Detail- Once you have your dress think about the detail. Plain dresses can have almost any style of accessory whereas intricate decoration should be matched and complemented with your accessories. 3. Ivory or White or Coloured? – If you have an ivory dress white freshwater pearls or crystals will look fabulous. If is white, crystals, coloured pearls or diamantes look fabulous with it. If you dare to be different and you are wearing a colour, clear or coloured crystals will complement your look. 4. Neckline – The neckline of your dress will always determine your choice in necklace. If you are going for a strapless dress, you can choose whatever necklace you wish, as is the case with square necklines. If the neckline is a V-neck choose a pendant or Y Shaped drop necklace, or if you have a round neckline I would suggest choosing a choker or round necklace. If the neckline is high, ditch the The Amore Ayliss Tiara in Gold "Great for Short Hair!" necklace and opt for some fabulous earrings instead! (don’t fear if you don’t have your ears pierced, all our earrings can be made to clip on!) 5. Veil – If you are choosing to wear a veil think about how you intend to wear it. If you want to wear a veil on the top of your head, a tiara or comb could be sat in front of it. If you are wearing it at the back of you head then you can have your pick of designs. 6. Hair – Your hair will influence your accessories. If you have very short hair and want to wear a tiara, make sure it is on a 27 Effloresce Sienna Comb by Bespoken For
manufactured rigid band so it won’t need fixing into place. In my experience the best tiaras to add flair to short hair are ones that sit on the side and make a statement such as the Ayliss Tiara (Shown p19). If you have longer hair, whether you intend to wear it up or down will need to be considered. If you are wearing your hair up you can easily secure any accessory. If you are opting to have trailing locks you need to choose something that will stay in place easily, or be prepared to find a solution to secure it in your hair. Combs and hair grips will stay in place and Adore Cuff Tiara By Bespoken For help to secure your hair, but hair pins are best for up-do’s. 7. Style – As we discussed earlier your style and personality should come though in your choice of accessory. If you are choosing a contemporary dress, a contemporary mix of crystals, diamantes and pearls will accentuate this. For a fresh romantic natural style flowers and pins work well. If you are a diva with that statement dress then match it with big accessories, or if you dare to be different go for bespoke with a unique edge. 8. Face Shape – You should enhance your face best by choosing the right shaped tiara to complement your features. I will tell you all the secrets in chapter 5 – Avoiding Tiara Drama (p21) 9. Size Matters – Big tiaras work well with pieces which make less of a statement (so a smaller necklace or no necklace, small earrings or no earrings look good). If you are going for a small tiara, pins or a comb, go for big accessories. Only match big tiaras and big accessories together if you have a big dress to go with it. 10. Wear it well – If you have chosen pearls get pearls to match them, or if you are going for crystals they will go with any diamante or diamond accessories. Think about your wedding rings and try and match with silver or gold. Co-ordinate accessories and you will ooze bridal style.

Chapter Five Avoiding Tiara Drama
Determine your face shape. When it comes to choosing your tiara, face shape matters. When you have a new hairstyle, your face shape dictates what looks good and what looks bad, the same principle applies when it comes to your headdress for your wedding. I am going to try and simplify how to determine which tiaras will look great on you! Knowing what shape your face is can be tricky and complicated. To keep things simple we will concentrate on 3 face groups; Round/Full; Long/Oblong and Oval/Heart shapes. If you roughly know where you would fit in to these groups you can jump over to the next section. However if you are unsure follow my simple way of working out what shape your face is.
With a ruler or tape, measure your face from your hairline to chin. Write the measurement here______________
Measure across the widest part of your forehead. Write the measurement here_______________
Measure across your cheekbones at the widest point. Write the measurement here_______________
29
Once you have measured your face , you are ready to determine roughly what shape your face is. Your face shape may be resemble a few shapes but go with the closest match.
If the width of your face is approximately 3/4 of the length of your face you are either an oval or a heart face shape.
If your face is almost as wide as it is long you have a round, square or full face.
If the width of your face is less than 2/3 or 3/4 of the length you have an oblong or long face.
30 www.BespokenFor.co.uk – The Place for Bespoke Bridal Jewellery
Long & Oblong Shaped Faces Steer clear of height which will make your face appear longer, instead opt for low styles, hair bands, combs and side tiaras. Keep it low and sophisticated. Here are some suggestions for your hair accessories (please note that this is only a small selection of examples and more are available online): If you have short hair:
Amore Ayliss Tiara
Autumn Tiara
Butterfly Tiara
If you are wearing your hair up:

Effloresce Kayla Tiara
Adore Crystal Comb
If you are wearing your hair down:
Adore Cuff Tiara
Poetry Pearl Tiara

Simplicity Diamante Band
Round or Full Shaped Faces If your face is round or full choose a tiara which elongates your features. Look for a tiara with height. Something tall with peaks will look fabulous and enhance your look. Here are some suggestions (please note that this is only a small selection of examples and more are available online): If you have short hair:
Adore Audrey Tiara
Amore Ayliss Tiara

If you are wearing your hair up:

Legacy Tiara
Vintage Rose Tiara
If you are wearing your hair down:

Poetry Snowpearl Tiara

Oval & Heart Shaped Faces If you are lucky enough to have a heart or oval shaped face you can almost have your pick of headdresses. However approach those with tall peaks with caution as these could make your face appear long and elongated, so stay under 3 inches tall, here are some suggestions (please note that this is only a small selection of examples and more are available online): If you have short hair:
Adore Jewelled Band
Dragonfly Tiara
Adore Floral Tiara
If you are wearing Your hair up:

Chapter Six Designing Your Own Jewellery
Basic Jewellery Design Process If you are thinking of designing your own jewellery you can do two things. Find yourself a jewellery designer who you are confident with and feel they will be able to meet your needs, or you can design your own jewellery and either commission a designer to make it or make it yourself. When I design jewellery for brides I try and find out as much information as possible about them. Styles, themes, tastes, how they intend to wear their hair, the neckline of their dress, whether they are going to wear a veil...... I then start to sketch and draw up some ideas. Once I have the sketches ready I show them to the bride and we discuss what you like or don’t like. If necessary I sketch again until we have a design that ticks all the right boxes. On approval from the bride I then begin to make the jewellery. If you want to design your own, start sketching your ideas or request a design from your designer.
Commission a Designer Once you have decided to have your jewellery made, if you are not going to make it yourself you need to find a designer that you feel happy to work with. If you are reading this book you already have some idea where to go, I hope, or you can search Google for a bespoke jewellery designer. If you have designed and sketched your own piece you could show it to several designers and discuss their ideas and prices and choose the one you are happiest to work with. If, however, you have had a design drawn up by a designer, you can’t take the
35
design to a different craftsman to be made as this would breach copyright, so you would need to commission the designer who did the designs for you. When you agree for a designer to start work on your jewellery you are normally required to pay upfront for your designs, so that materials can be bought and the designer can ensure they are paid for their time, as we can only make so many pieces of jewellery a day. Everyone has their own rules as to how much is required in advance so do ask what the procedure is and how much is needed. Upon completion of your jewellery your designer will normally show you their work and make any necessary adjustments you require. When you are happy your jewellery will be wrapped, packed and sent to you.
The DIY Quick Guide If you fancy making your own jewellery you will need to get some tools and supplies. You will need:
Wire cutters Flat nose pliers Round Nose Pliers Wire – Various gauges I would advise 0.4mm/26 gauge and 1mm/18 gauge – in whichever material you choose – sterling, gold filled or plated. Threads – Nylon, silk, illusion cord etc depending on what you want to make. Findings – Clasps, head pins, ear hooks etc for whatever jewellery you are intending to make. Beads – Crystals, pearls etc whatever you want in your jewellery
Most of these can be bought from a bead store or online. When you start to make your jewellery it may be tricky. There are many jewellery making techniques you can try. Buy yourself a craft book or look online for classes which will help you work the wire and beads into your designs.

Chapter Seven Accessorise Yourself Your Shoes You will need shoes for your wedding. You can buy some great shoes from bridal boutiques or you can go to a dance shop and buy some soft dancing shoes (like for ballroom dancing). When choosing your shoes remember you will have to wear them all day and you must be comfortable, as there is a lot of standing to do. (I remember that I was in agony by the time I got out of the church! )
Your Bouquet When choosing your bouquet try to imagine how it will look with your dress and get flowers to complement your colour schemes. If you are going for fresh flowers collect pictures of bouquets you like and discuss with your florist your choices for seasonal blooms. If you want something less traditional or to keep forever why not have a crystal bouquet? Or have some crystals added in with your flowers.
Your Veil Veils are down to personal preference and they are great, but don’t feel you need one if you don’t feel comfortable wearing one. Veils come in various lengths to reach your elbows, fingertips or the floor. Have a play around with different sizes when you have your dress fitting. Veils also can come with beautiful details so you can match them up with your dress.
Your Bag There are some exquisite bridal bags on the market so if you want one shop around. Bear in mind that you may not have hands to hold it though. So if you would rather go without get your chief bridesmaid a matching dolly bag and add your things into there for her to look after instead.
Your Garter No bride is complete without a garter, so choose one you love, borrow one or have a blue one. It will make you feel sexy and is a bit of fun. 37
Chapter Eight Accessorise Your Bridesmaids
Hair Accessories Make young bridesmaids feel like princesses and let them wear a tiara, whilst older bridesmaids love combs and pins. You can usually get them all to match too.
Jewellery Give your bridesmaids co-ordinating jewellery as thank you gifts and let them wear them on the day. Necklaces, earrings and bracelet sets can be made to match their dresses.
Shoes and Bags Satin ballet shoes are great for young bridesmaids and look really adorable. For older bridesmaids why not buy silver sandals so they can wear them again after the big day. Dolly bags in colours to match the bridesmaids dresses can normally be bought with the dress or why not ask for some fabric or the fabric left over after the adjustments and make your own?
Bouquets, Wands and Corsages Your bridesmaids will love fresh flower bouquets (particularly if they are pregnant and want to hide a bump) however if you have a young bridesmaid flowers can ruin fast, so why not give them a wand or a teddy instead, they can also keep them. Wrist corsages are also becoming really popular and can be made by your florist with fresh or artificial flowers, or Bespoken For make some stunning crystal wrist corsages.

Chapter Nine Mother Of the Bride
Crystal Fascinator and Calla Lily corsage by Bespoken For
Don’t Forget Mum! Mothers have dreamt of your wedding day all your life , and it is a special day for them too. Make sure your mother looks and feels great on your wedding day by helping her choose her outfit. Make sure it complements your colour scheme and she doesn’t stand out for all the wrong reasons
Hair Accessories & Hats It is traditional for the Mother of the Bride to wear a hat. If your mother is set on wearing a hat make sure you can still see her face, as there is nothing worse than looking through your wedding pictures and trying to work out who is underneath the hat! Feather and crystal fascinators are a modern alternative and will suit all face shapes. 39
Jewellery Mothers always appreciate jewellery especially if it was made just for them. Jewellery is also a great thank you gift for all her hard work
Corsages It is traditional for the Mother of the Bride and the Mother of the Groom to wear a corsage. Your florist can do beautiful fresh corsages to match your bouquet or you can have artificial floral corsages. Alternatively if you want your mother to have a keepsake why not have a crystal corsage which she can keep and wear again.
Chapter Ten Gifts Make sure you say thank you to everyone who helped you out with your day by giving them gifts of appreciation and tokens of your gratitude. Perhaps you could give your husband to be a gift to open on the morning of your wedding with cuff links and a cravat pin which will complement your jewellery. Favours – Guests love favours and they are a great way for thanking them for sharing your day. You can get a great variety of treats for your guests. From vhocolates to wine glass charms. These Favours were Calla Lilly wine glass charms with a ‘keep me’ label and mini divine fairtrade chocolate bars wrapped with an ‘Eat Me’ thank you note. Presents – It’s always good to give. If you want more ideas and suggestions for gifts and bespoke presents check out the Bespoken For gift shop.
