EVENT SPOTLIGHT: PAN AM PLANNERS KICK INTO ACTION

An age-old meeting sweetener – the box of doughnuts – is enjoying a sweet revival in Toronto as a wave of upscale, artisan bakeries takes up shop. Sure, you can still find trendy cupcakes or fancy macaroons, but Toronto holds a special place for the humble doughnut – the Tiny Tom’s minidonuts served up every summer at the Canadian National Exhibition have been a crowd-pleaser for more than 50 years. Today’s new generation is catering to event planners in fun ways, from gourmet dessert tables to a portable mini-doughnut fryer, available for trade shows or promotions. “I would have to say our most interesting donut would be our Blueberry Balsamic donut. It best represents Toronto because it’s familiar, yet also exciting and unexpected,” says Devin Connell, co-owner of Paulette’s Original Donuts and Chicken, a take-out shop and catering kitchen in Toronto’s east-end Leslieville. Across town, Jelly Modern Doughnuts has opened a Toronto outpost on College Street, an import from western Canada’s bakery-café stars, Rita and Rosanne Tripathy. Jelly’s catering and
