VERSATILITY. MOBILITY. EXCHANGE. GENEROSITY. THEATRICALITY. PERSONALITY. Way of transforming interior
“The best way to experience the real food that fuels and drives a community, however, is to sample the street food. Tom Kime
INTRODUCTION Vietnamese street food holds dynamic cultural reflection, social context of a community and its ability to bring people together by exchange with street vendor. I am interested in exploring spatial qualities and experiences’ of Vietnamese street food on how this space is operated within street environment, how it is arranged in order to encourage the relationship between diners and vendors, how the occupants and surrounding space contribute to construct experiences and especially how to translate these qualities into the interior context. In my research I have identified six key elements of investigation in relation to the interior: versatility, mobility, exchange, generosity, theatricality and personality. Throughout these investigations, I have developed a new strategy and methodology for designing an interior space.
VERSATILITY
THESIS QUESTION How can Versatility. Mobility. Exchange. Generosity. Theatricality. Personality observed in Vietnamese street food spaces be used to inform a way of designing interior?
Vietnamese street food spaces are all about versatility, mobility, exchange, generosity, theatricality and personal. Each single element supports and interrelates with all the others in order to contribute to create a unique and richness of dining spaces and experiences. Indeed, one element can only occurs or defines through the combination of a couples other elements. These qualities and experiences begin to construct a new way of approaching design of interior.

VERSATILITY How can the concept of versatility inform a multi-functional design in a compact space? How it is operated

Vietnamese street food space is highly versatile in using small space by exploiting the existing space such as concaved walls, platforms as a seating or shelving to support for business. The stall is chosen to set under the trees to get shading. Moreover, the chairs can be utilized as tables to save space in small operating

Also, mobility reflects in temporary concept which food stalls appear early in the morning and remain packed well into the night, unenclosed by four walls and uncontracted length of stay
EXCHANGE
PERSONALITY
How can the occupants and space contribute to promote exchange?
How can the notion of personality be evoked in public/ open space?
Vietnamese street food space potentially encourages exchange by promoting relationship between diners and vendors in the way furniture is arranged near the stall in closed connection with street vendors. In the other hand, street environment is a potential space for other activities happening such as performances. There is cycle of service exchanges amongst vendors, diners and performers, those who want earning for living and those who want services by giving away money Conversation exchange amongst diners
Conversation exchange between vendors and diners
Although Vietnamese street food is set on the street environment, it still offers a space for individual and personal needs. These needs require space to be alone, be freedom to talk and behave, be updated information, be inspired or simply be themselves without any disturbs. Street space for some is perfect space for escaping from every day livings.
GENEROSITY How can design promote generosity?
Vietnamese street food spaces create attractions by using visual and sensory senses. They are chosen in purpose to locate near the beautiful view or decorated spots such as river with street decorations to inherit from that benefits. Also, the products themselves are clever manipulated as a decorating feature to advertise for the food stall itself with bigger effect than the stall sign. And, the notion of generosity is evoked from the food smell of live demonstrative cooking which is attract diners from very far distances. repetition of display
“The best way to discover new dishes is to follow your nose.
live demonstrate cooking
THEATRICALITY How does the language of theatre influence the design of interior?
selling newspapers
Vietnamese street food spaces are condensed and genuine qualities of space that are also potential for many selling, performing and dining activities such as selling newspapers, barber shop, live entertainments, doing errands. It reflects and connects us to other living. It holds dynamic cultural reflection, social context of a community and brings people together

The gallery’s existing condition is very dull, messy with static materials, harsh lighting. Therefore, space is very unattractive and wasteful. Moreover, as I observed, students usually sit along the aisle to wait for classes/ tutors or basically have a conversation/discussion.

Zoo enclosure develops on the raised polemics of the clayanimated short film ‘Creature Comforts’ to redesign the studio room 8.11.18 into an Australian red kangaroo zoo enclosure. The concept is inspired by Shell House on how the organic forms control all over the space. The zoo is designed with wall-to-wall gardens and grass flooring that all are shaped by organic form of kangaroo body line.
Moreover, in order to fullfil the need of natual environment the space is filled in with natural sunlights coming down from the ceiling and the big screen showing the natual habitats to extent the space. The zoo highly reflects the staged space in the way that visitors can experience watching kangaroo playing and performing in the surreal artificial indoor zoo.

YEAR 2 PROJECT
PARA[SITE]
Para[SITE] is a work inspired by the concept of parasite throughout the Melbourne Central sky bridge which I refined from the two classinstallations. The new proposition is to create interaction of walkers with the new installation, environment surroundings and with each other by simply passing by a cardboard tunnel.
SITE TEMPLATE
CLASS INSTALLATION Cardboards are cut into template (left) to create two different installations: * one with strings rested on the floor * one using cable ties hung from the ceiling > to connect pieces to pieces into a giant installation at Melbb Central > to test out walkers on how they discovered and participated to the installation

VISUAL PREFERENCES Reflection

Basically, from the 1st and 2nd installation, walkers discover the design visually while they were walking along the bridge or just stopped for a while to exhibit the installation independently then quickly got back to track. Moreover, the mapping (left) shows how people occupy the space into many paralle lines that were no chances for interaction with the installation, environment or even with one another.
Move on from the reflection of two installations, I proposed to design a painted cardboard tunnel in the middle of the bridge to maximize interaction between people and the installation itself and people to each other by shaping the way walkers move through the tunnel (right mapping). That is the only way that walkers must pass by in order to reach Myer. So that, every single walker gets in and causes the traffic because the lane just designed to fit 1-2 people. In that purpose, walkers are be able to stop, spend time and experience the design. At the false ceiling, it reflects the contrasting between dark and light of the space and shifting the experience of changing colour throughout the bridge. Lichen parasite
