No.w.here Studio’s is a film lab and exhibition/event space in Bethnal Green that has been going since 2004. Run by Artists and Filmakers, Karen Mirza and Brad Butler. They deal in older formats of film such as Super 8 and do all their developing and processing on site.

Mission Statement “No.w.here opens a space where the place of the moving image within contemporary art can be explored and expanded. Whether supporting artists and the development of their work, or critically engaging audiences, artistic practice lies at no.w.here’s core, and is fed by innovative projects, events, facilities, workshops and education programmes

Workshops and talks are held on a weekly basis, during my time I sat in on the ‘Cinematic Body’ series and helped out during the Super 8 workshops. No.w.here’s film facilities are not available (outside of commercial labs) anywhere else in the UK. This, in itself, creates innovation as illustrated by the long history of artists films made during the film co-op years of the late 60’s and

70’s. no.w.here also allows artists and filmmakers to experiment with production and chemical processes (not allowed in the commercial labs). They have a new broadcast quality telecine for artists who wish to shoot on film and then edit digitally. Innovation in our existing equipment (optical printer) also enables artists to perform functions beyond the facilities original use.

Studio Renovation Project In the next building there had been a derilict house that once was a clothes factory and, more recently, a brothel. They had acquired this space and were in the process of renovating it and renting it as three studio spaces, kitchen and bathroom included. We came up with the idea of having two of them on the online advert and changing them each week to show the progression. I also put together a PDF that included a montage of these images to send out too.

Art Angel Project During my last week, Karen and Brad had been talking about starting up a community art project that would take place in June. While they didn’t have a set plan to what form that would take, they wanted to build up a map of local businesses in the area. Myself and the other work experience intern took a walk up and down Bethnal Green Road and stopped at every door to see of they’d like to tell us a bit about shops in the area, if and how that had changed, if they’d like to be a part of the project and if we could get some photographs. Fortunaltey most were only to happy to talk to us and let us explore the buildings. The following is the best of the set of images i got that day..........

Context is half the work

APG founded in 1966, it was an artist-run organisation started by Barbara Steveni and John Latham. Their mission was “Repositioning Art in the Decision-Making Processes of Society (in government, commerce the disciplines and professions). They did not intent for the artist to have a traditional relationship of patronage, but to involve themselves in the day to day work of the organisation at all levels including decisionmaking. The context of the studio renovation at that time was the main project during my time there. I did get involved in desicion making of which of my two favourite images made it onto the webiste and also was in charge of the image content and design of the advertisement PDF.
