Portrait Style Guide
WHAT TO WEAR How do you see yourself being photographed? Choose a selection of outfits that will reflect the images you want to see of yourself. Outfits you may normally not wear, outfits that make you feel good. We’ve outlined a few styles below to help you prepare ideas. We include a style consultation with each session and will go over each outfit at an earlier date together. BRING 5-6 OUTFITS Each session allows for the opportunity for outfit changes, this will ensure variety in the look and feel of your images. Bring items that are unique in style and reflect you, items you look and feel gorgeous in. Here are our style categories we look for while styling our shoots. LIGHT, AIRY & FLOWING. Whites, nudes, creams or desaturated colour. Layers of flowing fabrics that move easily. DARK & CLASSY. Colours such as black, navy or grey. Great for classic looks or headshots. SEXY. This can be anything from a formal gown to lingerÊ. Sheer works well here for layering. BOLD/COLOUR. Solids are best with little or no pattern, subtle prints may work but solids keep images timeless. STATEMENT PIECE. This is something you do not usually get to wear. Big princess gowns, corsetry, or custom made outfits, perhaps a favorite vintage piece. This is your fantasy piece. We LOVE to get creative in the studio and often can help piece together your statement piece.
KEEP IN MIND‌ FITTING Fitted clothing that shows shape work best for photographs. Less bulk and more form fitting outfits that show your curves. This applies to ALL body types. Long flowing skirts work well paired with a fitted top. STYLES & NECKLINES Some of my favorite necklines for camera are OFF SHOULDER, SWEETHEART, ASYMMETRIC OFF SHOULDER, V-NECK. Also consider the variety of these necklines in your wardrobe choice. Some style clothing translate to different feelings, off shoulder is more vulnerable and sexy, while high neck gives feeling of power. MATERIAL & TEXTURE Some of my favorite materials to work with are SHEER, LACE, BEADING, TULING, SHIMMER & SPARKLE. These are all materials that add mood and details while looking great in photographs. Avoid high-contrast patterns and prints, they become distracting. Do not wear logos.
HOW TO PREPARE - Steam/iron outfits and hang. - Be sure try on all your outfits using appropriate undergarments, pack your undergarments and co-ordinating accessories as well. - Most portraits will not require shoes unless previously discussed you will not need shoes for each outfit. - Plan co-ordinating outfits if you have chosen to shoot with a friend or partner. - Wear loose and comfortable clothing to your photoshoot - Arrive with clean, dry hair and make-up free on the morning of your shoot - Please advise us BEFORE if you have any allergies to skin care or make-up products. - Take care of waxing 3 days before photoshoot - Make sure you moisturize, drink plenty of water and get adequate rest leading up to your shoot. - Manicures/pedicures are best kept simple design or bold colours that may distract.
