ABOUT ME

"Never Stop Dreaming"~ Jennifer Reid

Graphic Designer. Illustrator. Interior Designer. In a past life I was a primary school teacher. With a passion for ‘all things design’ I love creating spaces, whether a new website or a new kitchen, that spark joy in all who enter them. A few of my favourite things are family, long walks, great food, books and travel adventures. My favourite piece of advice: Never stop dreaming!

The Carrington Hotel SOUL & SENSIBILITY I was asked to begin designing the interior of The Carrington Hotel in Katoomba, NSW. My client wanted the new design to be inspired by contemporary, local and indigenous art. The client would like to attract more local customers and tourists to the hotel through immersive experiences that are unlike any other in the Blue Mountains. The renovation will be completed in stages.

CONCEPT MOODBOARD & ART SELECTION Soul & Sensibility is the beautiful transience of the seasons and time itself. The ethereal aesthetic of the Blue Mountains – delicate, refined. A place of tradition and history. In this world, but not of it. A nod to another age. The exquisite intricacies of change as a phenomenon. A soulful connectedness to nature as part of the human experience and identity. Our constant pursuit in the understanding of nature, allowing infiltration, permeation, positively changing our mood, rejuvenating us from within.

ARCHITECTURAL ELEMENTS

There are some beautiful architectural elements and materials in the hotel, such as dado rails, pressed metal panels and wainscoting. These elements will look amazing with a simple change of colour palette, along with finishes, wallpaper & other decorative elements and furnishings.

BOOKS 'N' BAKES The Library will showcase a soulful experience to warm the heart and keep visitors coming back for more. In a gorgeous new library / bakehouse concept called Books 'n' Bakes, visitors will be welcomed by a nod to the Aboriginal Dreamtime legend of the exquisite lyre bird and enter a space that will fill the soul. Storytelling and sweets. Delicious baked treats and a curated collection of books on baking, stories set in beautiful cafes, Jane Austen & other beautiful historical fiction novels - sweet for the lips, minds, eyes and soul of all who enter. The colourful circular shapes in the indigenous artwork reflect the fun and sweetness of the baked treats.

There will also be an artwork of a lyre bird by Australian artist Sally Browne.

JANE AUSTEN-ESQUE Since my Soul & Sensibility concept is a gentle nod to the title of Jane Austen’s novel Sense & Sensibility, I carried out some research to inspire the further development of my concept. The main theme in this 1811 novel is the danger of excessive sensibility (or emotionality) and sentimental nature of people compared to their commonsense rationality. My vision for The Carrington Hotel is to bring out its soul and romantic aesthetic - characteristics by which humans have gained much pleasure throughout time. It’s all about indulgence, romance, pleasure, pampering.

The Joynton Smith Suite is the pinnacle of luxury hotel accomodation - a transient space that begs to be lived in permanently.

Textures and objects we may find in our dream home, art and materials to remind us of the transient beauty of the changing seasons in nature. Soulful and light, luxurious but comfortable, orderly yet whimsical.

There is easy access to the hotel kitchen with direct access through the back door, adjacent to this site – so there will be great food on offer, featuring local produce, as well as a focus on providing the best of Australian beers, wines and spirits. The use of brass, black metal, rustic timber and cool festoon string lighting will give this outdoor space a vibe to rival the coolest bars around the world.

DESIGN NATION OH HAPPY DAY The first part of this brief was to design a travelling exhibition space for Design Nation, a commercial furniture studio in Redfern. The purpose of the space is to display the PP225 Flag Halyard Chair (1950) by Hans J. Wegner in the form of a ‘retrospective’. The second part of the brief was to transform the Ground Floor space of the client's heritage showroom into a showcase of local and international design products from around the globe. The aim was to produce concept ideas for the reception and waiting/breakout areas and the main circulation path of the studio space.

FINAL CONCEPT Oh HappyDday is Wegner’s story of a happy day at the beach with his family, intertwined with our own experiences of the joy in adventure and escape from daily life. Tactility, the restorative characteristics of holidays, the beauty in changing seasons reflected in the playful, unpredictable shapes and shadows cast in this exhibition stand design. The botanical-shaped cutouts in the custom Axolotl panel backdrop mimic leafy trees & the seagrass planted in the pebbles are the beautiful nature scapes we are inspired by on beach adventures. Enclosed in the comfort & cosiness of a luxurious curtained hideaway, with artisanal texture, natural materiality, organic shapes and relaxed elegance, showcasing the truly timeless PP225 Flag Halyard Chair. Reminiscent of a warm, breezy day, concealed fans are installed in frames above curtains to softly move the fabric along with the seagrass below. Ocean sounds through speakers will mimic the waves, even when the stand is not in a beachside location. The stand will debut its journey on Sydney’s Bondi Beach, before being transported to its next destination. All materials used are weatherproof in case of inclement weather, however the chairs are removed for storing safely by staff offsite each evening. To add further interest to the sheer waterproof curtain panels, enclosing the space making it appear cosier, there are timber slats at the front that are random in shape, height and diameter, to look more organic and natural, like the unique twisting of tree trunks. And to add to the whole luxurious and dreamy aesthetic, an amazing jazz band will perform to the side of the exhibition stand to entertain waiting visitors.

CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT Utilising both natural & artificial lighting, Biophilic design and a natural colour palette, making way for a relaxed vibe, with a beachy, resort holiday aesthetic. Linear as well as organic shapes, as can be found in nature. Mostly white, minimal colour palette with the added interest of terracottas, greens and black. Cosy break-out area separated by curvi-linear partitioning elements. The reception area are inviting and appearing user-friendly for the receptionist to work effectively, with appropriate functionality and privacy, but also easily visible for entering visitors.

Fenwick Building URBAN COCOON For this warehouse conversion of the Fenwick Stone Building in Balmain Sydney, my clients requested a glamorous city retreat that mirrors the luxury country lifestyle they enjoy in their rural Hunter Valley residence. This project included my own fabric pattern design for some of the soft furnishings.

FENWICK CONCEPT MOODBOARD Urban Cocoon is the juxtaposition of a sculptural, organic hideaway nestled within the dramatic intersection of line and plane. The peace of a rural existence amid the magnificent urban bustle of a metropolis. A calming sanctuary within a contrasting formal heritage structure. Inspired by world travel - modern vs historical architecture, spiralling Vatican staircase against modern metal staircases, juxtaposing architectural elements, the Opera House sails vs its linear steps, triangular tee-pee vs rectilinear shapes, the Trulli houses of Italy's Alberobello, the warm cocoon of a silk worm and the art of beautiful lighting - a clear juxtaposition of light and dark in relation to the luxurious & artistic mood lighting that will feature throughout the space.

Tiny House CARNIVALE LIVING I was asked to design the interior of a narrow heritage house in Enmore, for a hard-working designer couple who love art, music and all things Spanish. Passionate about sustainability, my clients wanted an innovative, contemporary design that respected the integrity of the original building, which is in the Victorian Gothic Revival architectural style. Carnivale Living is the Gothic Revival Architectural roots of the Tiny House intertwined with the Spanish Carnivale, traditionally celebrated at Easter time. Ornate and decorative, playful and rhythmic, asymmetrical and unpredictable.

leep Botanic Luxe PREFABRICATED MODULAR HOME For this project in St Peters Sydney, health-conscious materials were a must for an asthmatic client and a regularly visiting young grandson. My clients specified their strong interest in sustainability and reusable materials for furniture selections, durable flooring and wanted an eco home with a light footprint environmentally, with a focus on concrete, timber and polished surfaces. The Botanic Luxe style speaks of elegant metals, reflective surfaces, exotic timber, natural leather and beautiful textiles. It spells individuality and imaginative attention to detail. Creating a sophisticated and refined space inspired by design elements from around the globe, this home design is refreshingly modern and luxuriously comfortable. Materials and furniture look as though they’ve lived a life before coming into this home for added charm. It is all about well-loved pieces that could very well have been sourced from a far-flung market in some exotic location.
