menu designs and promotional materials for Vodou Bar

Menu designs for Vodou Bar, a Caribbean themed gastropub in Bedstuy, Brooklyn. I worked closely with the owners to redesign their menus complete with updated color palette and an illustration that is based on the unique architecture of the establishment and features a lattice of diagonal beams. The menus were color coded for brunch, evening and cocktails so they could be quickly identified and distributed to customers by the busy servers and easily read depending on the time of day.

KLH identity re-design

KLH identity designs: Iterations for a project in which, myself and my team at the Pratt Incubator re-designed the logo and identity systems for the legacy speaker brand, KLH. We began with image research and marketing positioning and went on to use this research as a tool to envision new communications design materials for the company.

Beecher’s Artisanal Cheese menu board

Beecher’s Cheese Menu board: This project was for an artisanal cheese company in Manhattan. I designed a composite of the establishment’s menu based on the look and feel of the cheese shop, using pre-established imagery and design direction. The final product was hand rendered on an 8 ft. by 4 ft.sign board.

web application design

my thesis project: The Design Oracle selected screenshots of the Oracle

My thesis project, The Design Oracle explores the creative potential of randomization. It is a web application inspired by the ancient Chinese Oracle, the I Ching. I created it using CSS and Javascript. At times nonsensical or illegible and at other times breathtaking and bang-on, The Design Oracle is as mysterious and ambiguous as the I Ching itself. Comprised of 5 layers of 64 pieces of information per layer, each layer is randomly selected upon the entry of a question. The result is a new composition, complete with an excerpt from the original I Ching text to contemplate. The Oracle presents us with millions of possible solutions to meditate upon both aesthetically and conceptually. Enter a question and receive an answer along with a new composition to meditate on.

spreads from my thesis book

above: the cover right: some of the printed spreads left and below: some spreads from the book

My thesis book: Experimentation in Communications Design: Moving Toward a Methodoloy of Innovation involved a study of modes of research in other disciplines and expored randomization as a possible method for realizing innovative results. Drawing on the music and visual arts experimentation of John Cage, I used the ancient Chinese oracle, the I Ching, to randomize decision-making about the book design

my thesis exhibition design left: a shot of the Oracle onscreen.

below left: a closeup of the hexagram sculpture. below right: a close-up of some of the signage.

for my final thesis presentation I installed a desktop exhibition and invited users to try the Design Oracle. I created a minimal identity for the project and used accents of balsa wood and brown paper to create a calming environment where paricipants could focus on a question while inquiring of the oracle. The installation also featured a sculpture of a hexagram (the icon associatd with the I Ching) and projections of gifs I created that feature a user enacting the ritual of consulting the I Ching.

Typeface Animation: an animation intended to showcase a typeface and express the look and feel of the typeface. I chose Alt Retro, a typeface created by Alt Foundry. The animation is intended to portray the urban, contemporary feel of the typeface by juxtaposing it against urban images and images of vernacular type around the City. water bottle label design for Whole Foods Market®

This design is for a leech free private label water bottle that Whole Foods Market® Southwest Region produced. The design is intended to simultaneously address the issues of water conservation while also embodying the values of Whole Foods Market’s® corporate identity. The company is highly committed to environmental conservation and also to diversity. The bottle design depicts a water tower surrounded by birds to suggest that the tower has been

abandoned. This image provokes the notion that water is a finite resource. The word “conserve” is intended as a reminder that we must conserve this precious resource. The word “water” is repeated over and over in different languages on the back to represent that this is a global concern.
