EXPERIMENTATION AN INTRODUCTION

This is a series of work representing the fruit of labour of my experimentations in the challenges of birth, life and death that is Healthcare architecture. It also includes a preview of my graduation project The Runway.

It has also led me to question myself: “WHERE WOULD MY NEXT EXPERIMENTATION BE?”

It began as an adventurous curiosity that propels me into this typology: a typology which requires a careful planning of medical-material flows, peoplecentricity and a pinch of innovations that sets it apart from the generic norm. Its ethos represents a social responsibility to create healing sanctuaries for the patients and an efficient workplace for the care-givers. It is through constant experimentations are we able to condition ourselves to changes: Changes that morph us to innovate and be on a constant prowl for the next big idea. It’s a state of mind - in keeping it open and continuously asking ourselves ‘how can it be more______ (elegant, wild, sustainable, appealing; just to name a few)?’ Throughout my experimentation I have participated in a series of local and international projects; and had contributed to concepts, architectural articulations, facade designs and details; and medical planning of these projects. The experiences it entails has deepened my knowledge in Architecture and planning, and strengthened my confidence in design delivery.

a hospital in a rainforest a hospital for the body, mind and spirit

yishun community hospital The project

work scope

Located opposite the iconic Khoo Teck Puat Hospital, the design for Yishun Community Hospital has a lot to prove. In responses to its context, site and the rising social demand for a long-term care institution addressing the ageing population, the proposed design aims to provide a living sanctuary; a healing environment for the body, mind and spirits of patients and their loved ones.

The hospital’s terraced form creates a stepping garden giving each patients their very own piece of rainforest, where lush greeneries surround their living spaces. The main ethos of our design was people-centric. Patients’ comfort and seamless flow of patients and staffs were priorities addressed in the spatial design of the hospital.

a rejuvenated skin a respectful facelift

national skin centre THE PROJECT The expansion of the National Skin Centre and the site’s prominent position in the Novena Master Plan results in an iconic design which announces itself both subtly and dramatically as it integrates the existing landscape and built form.

Most importantly, this proposal brings together the design teams’ project ideals of strong medical planning and a focus on reimagining patients as valued guests to be cared for, trusted and respected as part of the overall community of health.

The introduction of the new building form and the resultant spaces creates a rich array of patient centric experiences within and around the buildings. In embracing what is there and celebrating the new old, the building form reacts and plays with the external environment, wrapping through, under and around the trees creating urban vistas, welcoming courtyards and leafy outlooks, affording visitors a healthy, happy, healing experience.

This simple premise results in an iconic and human design which pushes the conventions of the traditional health building.

Coordinated with foreign design partners on architectural design of the new NSC annex building.

work scope

Responsible for design of Basement car parking, traffic access, M&E and Support departments, in coordination through Value Management workshops and Work study groups with users and medical planner.

Participated in Feasibility Study presentation to Client.

This proposal brings together the technological aspects of passive and active green design, smart management of mechanical and infrastructure services and clever construction techniques to create a building scheme which is strikingly beautiful, easy to manage and simple to construct.

Responsible for writing and compilation of feasibility study report for submission to Client: In coordination with Client, internal consultants – C&S consultants, M&E Engineers, Quantity Surveyors, CPG transport consultants; and external consultants – foreign design partners and Value Management consultants.

future proofed setting a benchmark for the future

shenzhen (futian) peoples’ hospital THE PROJECT

work scope

The Shenzhen Peoples’ Hospital was conceptualized to provide a rejuvenating change to the city of Shenzhen innovating the concept of Healthcare architecture.

The design aims to integrate the hospital into the city’s public space, creating a seamless green link via the hospital and a hub for the community. Innovative ideas include the concept of every patient has a window and every window has a view; creation of lush sky gardens to provide a soothing environment of healing. The medical design creates a modular system which caters to expansions and helps in future-proofing the hospital. The facade is conceptualized in varying degrees of permeability corresponding the climate and context. An organic band forms the centerpiece crisscrossed with vertical landscape. The hospital is designed to set out as a benchmark in both healthcare and sustainable standards.

making connections connecting nature, people and architecture

institute of mental health THE PROJECT The expansion of the Institute of Mental Health (IMH) called for a new administrative building extension. The concept that drives this proposal is defined as an environment that encourages interaction of staff with public, patient, colleagues, community and nature. The design approach of the team was to bring the green space back through an elevated landscaped plaza.

Careful integration of sun shades, selection of glazing to the overall facade design will reduce heat gain and glare. Light shelves, natural ventilated corridor, light tube, personalised cooling and displacement cooling will gain points toward Green Mark Platinum target.

This plaza with a glass beacon that houses the conference room, library and break-out spaces is a wayfinding node that orientates the staff and public. The glass beacon has six pillars, the first five symbolizes the five core values of IMH and the sixth pillar symbolizes the healing environment that IMH and the new admin building provides.

work scope

let’s go shopping reinventing retail + consumerism in singapore

The Runway is a mixed-use development of White shopping mall, SOFD - the School of Fashion and Design and W Singapore boutique hotel. The project will be located in Bugis, Singapore, where it is known as a hub for arts, culture, and vibrant city life. The project endeavours to synthesize retail and education, tourism and living into a single cohesive entity. The Runway project seeks to challenge the provocative limit of retail by identifying the authenticity, consistency and experience consumers crave; translating these desires into architectural and programmatic manifestations. The project also seeks to empower consumers and students alike through education and bridge the distance between students, professionals and general public.

Three types of shopping will form the framework of retail Boutique, Internet and Bartering. Spanning both micro and macro scales, the Runway Project will focus on creating a new model of retail by redefining the act of shopping through constant innovations with technology (online shopping), free shopping (bartering) and chic’ness (exclusive boutique shopping). Singapore is a modern city with an estimated 75 shopping malls based on a generic pattern of themed shopping and merchandising; food and beverage, and entertainment. With this in mind, the Runway aims to break away from this mediocrity and reinvent retail as an activity of material, emotional and creative satisfaction. The concept of retail in the Runway is all about authenticity, consistency and experience, in a society where consumers shops less and demand more from each experience, spend less and demand more value.

The shopping experience thrives from stores that are relevant, fresh and engaging, offering an emotional connection, interaction and excitement to consumers. With that in mind, innovations to shopping is a necessity. Thus the marriage of internet shopping with boutique chic in the Wall of Shopping and Ebay Retail boxes; condensing goods and shop spaces, creating an everchanging shopfront for the mall. Shoppers should and need to gain knowledge from shopping; they need to be empowered and be inspired through the act of retail. A shopping mall can be seen as a school, with constant engagements and understanding. The School of Fashion and Design is conceptualised and hybridised in the shopping mall as a result.
