The potential inherent of this studio was to understand context as an operator within the school and between the school as well as other programs and spaces of culture creation potential. The studio began with research that suggests possible future programmatic connections of school spaces, specifically the capacity of classrooms as mediating platforms of communication with knowledge, learning as well as cultural connections with local context. Many exercises with the use of pulling and stretching of fabric were experimented on which lead to the creation and definition of character for spaces through subtle markers of connection. These experimentations attempted to substitute techniques of subdivision and compartmentalization made through vertical partitions, by “ceiling tactics, that is, modes of connecting and suggesting spatial gradient and character in a more fluid yet more precise manner. The translation between three dimension and two dimension defines the form as well as the partitions of the program.

CEILINGTACTICS Tension structures or canopies are active procurers of opportunities and strategies for continuity and linkages across the site. Crystallization processes work towards establishing cross-sectional qualities in the linkages created by dynamic relaxation processes in the canopy studies. The connection of these studies have the ultimate objective of creating various palettes of communication between spaces, focusing on different ways of accessing centralization, decentralization, bifurcation, and networking movements of the users.

MATERIALAPPLICATION P R AT T I N S T I T U T E / D E S I G N S T U D I O / F A L L 2 011 / K A R E L K L E I N

This project began with a material study to explore the concepts and theories behind aggregating a unit with the material of any choice and applying it across a field. The next phase focused on the methodologies of the aggregate field and how it can be contextualized and site specific to serve user needs while adapting to the program requirements including a cafe, retail shops, dance studios, and a performance theater.

CONCEPT The material study investigates the spatial, structural, and material qualities of folding as a generative proccess in design. Explorations in folding techniques allowed for the discovery of a system that responds to structural and programmatic demands. The folding process transforms a two-dimensional surface into a three-dimensional dynamic and interactive surface.

UNITINVESTIGATION This portion of studio was a continuation of the material study which took a section of the units to explore its deformation properties in Autodesk Maya as a modeling tool. Attractors were used to affect the distance and aperture of the blended unit on a larger field. The field was then wrapped upon a manipulated plane to further deform the field as a whole.

HYBRIDNETWORK

UC BERKELEY / DESIGN STUDIO / SUM MER 20 0 9 /ROSS HUM MEL

The racetrack arena network was conceptualized as a dynamic program that responded to various activities including subcultures of bmx stunting or unicycling. These activities coexisted with secondary subcultures including martial arts, acupuncture, fortune telling, and chiropractics. This project explored a flexible terrain that is inverted between inside and outside depending on circulation, program distribution, and spatial interaction. Hence, the infrastructure was designed based upon analyzing and construing multiple sets of internal and external information.

PROCESSION

The site is heavily influenced by external and internal exchanges of information that affect the conceptual framework for design. The various densities including tourist density, creative density: random pieces of art created by inhabitants or visitors, housing density: “squatters who claim ownership on the site, and green density must coexist with the new program to maintain the site. The roof canopy acts as a structure to provide shelter for the programs including bmx stunting, martial arts, chiropractics, etc. The folding surfaces of the structure integrate with the landscape by making contact and penetrating the earth to form programmatic continuity. The triangulated geometry becomes a part of the choreographed circulation that acts as a procession into the deeper albany bulb.

03

MOVEMENT

The abstracted movements of various programs : bicycling, bmx stunting, martial arts, pocket bike racing; The result was a series of graphs studying the human body and its movements pertaining to each activity. The graphs where then overlayed to create a sequence that defined a tectonic language and was applicable to the site and program

ART& ARCHITECTURE U C B E R K E L E Y / D E S I G N S T U D I O / F A L L 2 0 0 8 / PA U L B U R G I N

The art gallery serves as a joint exhibition space shared between the art students in Kroeber Hall and the architecture students in Wurster Hall, and therfore exists as an important gateway that functions between two subjects. The exhibition space thus acts as a bridge between art and architecture and represents the social framework for integrating two together. Through careful site analysis, a scheme was created in order to address social and programmatic concerns including circulation, various modes of transportation on site, and integration onto the site without taking away from what has already existed on the site.

04

BRIDGE

The proposed design is integrated into the landscape centrally located between Wurster Hall and Kroeber Hall. It does not impede the existing landscape through obstructing paths or circulation throughout the site, rather, it embraces what has already been established and continues to draw users toward the centralized location. The form embraces the topography and encourages users to use the site as a social and collaborative environment. The interior features an interactive display space that can be utilized to fit the needs of the art and architecture.

This mapping represents the density of the routes/paths most commonly used over a one day time period between the hours of 9AM - 12AM, revealing that the site is no simple space; It is a dynamic source for nodes of interests, social interaction, and describes the framework for creating a spatial quality that ties two subjects together.

MANIPULATEDMULTIPLICITY This assignment focused on the modeling of a hexagonal screen wall. Research of porous and perforated subjects were conducted to understand the complexity of bio and digital architecture. Mirroring techniques as well as deformation of units using a lattice box were applied to modify the hexagonal clusters.

REPRESENTATION This exercise looked at the research of an existing bridge to understand its construction process and through that process, to create an animation that would represent the movements and portrayals of each of the bridges’ components. The animation was centered around three definitions of the bridge; its’ iteration of a consutrction unit, its’ movement of that like a bird, and the use of lighting to create an environment. The end result was to create a representation of the animation that truly describes each element of the bridge.

06

REPRESENTATION This exercise provided framework for conceptualizing the digital project of a bridge. The end result was to create a proposal for a bridge that used techniques explored in Grasshopper including data control, advanced relationships, and changing outputs. The implementation of representation and linework were used to extract critical approaches to the digitization of architecture.
