SPATIAL JUSTICE
Architecture is a social art form Limerick City Final Year Thesis Project Too often, architecture is designed (and consequently comprehended) as a purely aesthetic or intellectual activity, ignoring social relations and rendering people passive. In my final year thesis project I tried to create an architectural project that was centred on the spatial needs of the person and designing the person comfortably into the urban sphere. I looked at the poorly designed areas of the under privileged of Limerick city and how the areas in which they lived were spatially unjust. The project was based in an unused and derelict part of the city but which was also close to the centre. Its positioned beside the city’s train station, football club and main public park.
My project proposed for a mixed use development but which consisted of mainly public housing. The real emphasis of my project though was not on the design of the public housing themselves but in fact the spaces around, thresholds into and connections through the project. In my proposal I looked to create a series of spaces that work on a macro and micro level connecting the surrounding areas to each other while also connecting the person to their built surroundings. The importance of the relation of the building to the street and the spaces around it are paramount to how I designed the streets and surrounding area to be more than public utilities or byways; they moderate the form, structure and comfort of urban communities.
I looked at designing and planning streets to be places of comfort, fulfilling places to be, community building places, attractive places for all people of the cities and neighbourhoods. It was an updated version of the Albertian idea of the city’s streetscape to be dealt with like a series of rooms or even for the space around the buildings to be thought of as an object in itself. Great care was taken to design the relation between the thresholds of ground floors in urban situations with boundaries, entrances and private/public interaction given greater importance. Architecture is a physical embodiment of who we are as individuals and who we are collectively as a culture so I feel that the design should reflect this by putting the person first and foremost.

CREATIVE SPACE Limerick City Fourth Year
The assignment for this project was to create a mixed used infill development which was to include dwellings of some kind. The project was based at the top of Thomas Street on the edge of the Georgian grid in Limerick city. I approached this project with a
view to creating a linking piece of urban design and a new creative space for the expanding arts scene of Limerick. The design included gallery spaces, workshops/studios, artists dwelling and a restaurant. The design was focused on the idea of connecting the existing cul de sac alleyways through to the main street
to create a new exciting creative urban hub. The linked alleys are connected through a central open area onto which all the buildings open out onto offering an inviting creative space. Another focus of this infill project was to integrate the project into the
Georgian grid and its surroundings. To achieve this I chose to create a modern elevation which drew upon the lines and scales of the Georgian quarter (see Contents Page). An attempt was made to re-integrate the mews lanes and mews housing as part of the urban fabric.

LIMERICK CITY LIBRARY Limerick City 3rd Year
The assignment for this project was to create a new Limerick City Library. The initial idea behind this project is based on the movement of people through the site and how to incorporate this into the building which led to two buildings opposite each other. This gave the building its distinctive shape to allow movement around the building derived from movement patterns of the site. The Library consisted of two buildings with a large courtyard connecting by a covered passageway.
The division of the library was recognizing the dual nature of modern libraries providing a civic position in the community other than its historical uses. The northern civic building contains the music rooms, storage and some community rooms on the ground floor with the second floor containing the administrative and more community rooms. The southern building contains the children’s, computer, adult and teenage areas of a traditional library spread out
over the three floors of the southern building. To the west of the building, the large public riverside area caters for large gatherings such as Riverfest and other public occasions. The the outer facade of the building draws from its surroundings with a heavy limestone block wall construction including the existing Market wall while the inner edge is an open and inviting glazed interior focused out onto the courtyard.

Ireland’s Living Space Mayo & Fingal, SAUL IU A-political Island is a project that aims to adjust the way people imagine and visualize the physical form of society created by those who live on it through defining the living space of the island. Ireland is a compact island. Island Life, and the

Living Space we've created on it is a basic conditioning aspect of this society. The kind of living space we have created of the island is unique; we know very little about it, this island and what exactly we've done to it.
Fundamentally this research project lifts all of the boundaries that define the extent of disciplinary/ governance/infrastructure remit, and looks at Living Space the way people experience it – as one continuous place. Lifting the

boundaries allowed the region to be analyzed at a variety of levels simultaneously; transportation (movement), energy, education, land use, nature, environment. In this synthetic way of looking at how the physical environment interacts
with itself, and society in general, some new ideas will develop.
