PRECEDENCE RESEARCH Picking up the second half of the Semester we were tasked to Seek Inspiration and to explore various design approaches such as Folding, Tessellation, Sectioning, and tensioning. As I sought Inspiration for possibilities I began to explore Structures Both Familiar and Unfamiliar and it began to open my eyes toward the possibilities. As I took one more step in my design journey, the ordering of structures which i was awed to day by day, made a little more sense, the more and more I sought to understand them.

OUR PROCESS REFLECTION: AS A PROJECT MANAGER, WHAT WAS DIFFICULT TO ACCOUNT FOR WAS THE HUGE VARIATION IN ALL OUR IDEAS. I WAS INITIALLY AT A LOSS OF HOW TO DEAL WITH OUR GROUPS INABILITY TO COMMUNICATE. HOW OUR TEAM RESOLVED THE ISSUE WAS WE SPENT SOME TIME AT THE WHITE BOARDS OUTLINING THE CONCEPTS WE CAME UP WITH, THE STRENGTHS AND WEAKNESSES OF US TAKING A PARTICULAR DESIGN APPROACH, AND WHETHER OR NOT OUR GROUP WANTED TO GO WITH ONE CONCEPT OR CREATE A SYNTHESIS OF CONCEPTS. ISSUES I LEARNED HOW TO ADDRESS AND WHAT WE FACED AND LEARNED WERE • WE WANTED TO BE DEMOCRATIC AND FAIR TO THOSE WHO WERE MORE SOFT SPOKEN • THOUGH SUTLE PEOPLE ARE INCLINED AND BIASED TOWARD THEIR OWN DESIGNS • AS A PROJECT MANAGER IT’S POSSIBLE TO FIND A RESOLUTION IN WHICH NOT ALL DESIGNS DIE BUT RATHER THE
INTEGRITY OF EVERYONES CONCEPT CAN BE PROMOTED WITH VARYING DEGREES OF EMPHASIS IF ENOUGH THOUGHT IS PUT INTO IT.
IT IS BECAUSE OF THIS PROCESS, THOUGH IT WAS LONG THAT OUR TEAM WAS ABLE TO REFINE OUR PROCESS AND DECIDE THAT WE WANTED TO HAVE TO SEPARATE JOURNEYS WHICH FRAMED BEAUTY.

PROCURING BUILDING M AT E R I A L S • MOVING MATERIALS WAS IN MANY WAYS INFORMATIVE BUT
ALSO A CHALLENGE IN WHICH I LEARNED ALOT OF PRACTICAL KNOWLEDGE ABOUT BUILDING. I REALIZED THAT OUR PROJECT WAS LIMITED BY THE AMOUNT OF MATERIALS I WOULD BE ABLE TO BRING PER TRIP TO THE BUILD SITE (EACH TRIP BEING AROUND 20-24 PIECES OF 2X4). EVERY PROJECT IN THE FUTURE WILL BE LIMITED BY WHAT CAN BE TRANSPORTED • I ALSO REALIZED THAT IT WAS A TIMELY PROCESS AND THAT I
WOULD HAVE TO WAKE UP GOING TO THE HARDWARE STORE BY 9 AM TO AVOID TRAFFIC TO PROCURE MATERIALS TO ENSURE THAT THE TEAM COULD BUILD. EVERY PROJECT REQUIRES A SIGNIFICANT AMOUNT OF TIME LOADING AND UNLOADING MATERIALS. THERE ARE TRANSPORTATION COSTS AND COSTS ON TIME AS I MADE MORE AND MORE TRIPS • I BECAME MORE FAMILIAR WITH THE PRODUCTS I WAS
PURCHASING • LEARNED HOW TO SECURELY TIE DOWN MATERIALS TO THE
ROOF OF MY VEHICLE • I LEARNED ABOUT BUDGETING AND HOW TO RATION IT
EFFICIENTLY
WE WERE FAIRLY EFFICIENT IN OUR CONSTRUCTION MEETING ONLY TWICE A WEEK FOR A MAJORITY OF CONSTRUCTION BUILDING FROM 12-5. DAYS 1-2 MEASURED, CUT, AND SCREWED FRAMES DAY 3-4 ASSEMBLED RISERS AND MADE PLATFORMS FRAMES/ASSEMBLED PLANTERS DAY 5 ASSEMBLED STAIR CASE WITH BRACKETS/ ATTACHED PLYWOOD TOPS DAY 6 ATTACHED STRUCTURAL SUPPORTS DAY 7-8 RAMP/SUPPORTED PLATFORMS/ FINISHING TOUCHES DAY 9 FINISHING TOUCHES
KEY TAKE AWAYS • THE MORE WE USED TOOLS THE MORE COMFORTABLE THEY BECAME TO USE • WHEN CONSTRUCTING THE DESIGN CAN CHANGE TO ACCOMMODATE LIMITATIONS OR THE COST OF MATERIALS • IT IS MORE EFFICIENT TO DELEGATE TEAMS TO TACKLE A TASKS RATHER THAN EVERYONE DOING THE SAME TASK • ANY WORKPLACE A KEY OF SUCESS WILL BE BEING A TEAM PLAYER • BEING PROACTIVE IN LOOKING FOR THINGS TO DO TO HELP TEAM GOALS
