JINHAO HOU Born in Taipei, Taiwan, 1989 I believe that a good space brings peace and harmony to our spirit, it’s about the balance between inside and outside. We are able to sense it by all the senses of our own body. ABOUT ME With two years of Architectural and four years Industrial design education, I’m not like an ordinary Product / Industrial designer. I’d love to find some new connections between human, objects and spaces. Therefore, I really like the way Japanese architect SOU FUJIMOTO works, he tend to break boundaries and try to find new possibillities between things, and he is always full of curiosity and experimental idea. It shows the beauty of Ambiguousness. The projects I worked on were strongly reveals the traces of my thoughts, which focused on defining and refining the way people experience in my personal insight. I keep trying to convey the concept in every single ,subtle details. EXPERIENCES Finished a water filtration project as a four-month freelancer with the design team of Kohler in 2013, then participated the social event “One Pavilion to Go’’ (Taiwan Pavilion of EXPO 2015 Milano.) as a visual designer.

Before deciding final materials for COATRACK X, plastic prototypes with desirable elasticity were used for experimentation. By combining two bamboo strips with different lengths, a basic structural element of COATRACK X is created. The two bamboo strips are bent natural, and bolted together at the ends, no heat-bending is required to form a natural curve. 在選定材料前,使用具有彈性的塑膠材料 嘗試結構與空間關係,於是「COATRACK X」有了基本雛形。最後將兩片不同長度的 竹片頭尾做結合,即產生「COATRACK X」 的基本結構元素。所有的竹片的彎曲都不 是因為加熱彎折,而是直接利用竹子本身 的韌性與彈性所自然產生。

This is a concept to use elasticity of the material to create a new relationship with the space. The elasticity of bamboo becomes the weights and measures of hanging and unhanging state, thus transferrable force units exist in space and weights.

Slightly transferrable force extent is generated by the space between two bamboo pieces that are clamped together. The more clothes it is hanged, the more weight the bamboo pieces need to hold. As the weight increases, the middle section of each piece contracts to produce more space for hanging, hence the interesting connection between weights and space is created. 嘗試藉由材料的特性(彈性)與空間產生新的 對話關係。竹子的彈性成為有懸掛與未懸掛的 度量衡,空間與重量之間便有了轉換的單位。 被轉換的微小空間即是利用兩片相夾之竹片中 間的空間,當懸掛的衣物越多,竹片所承受的 重量就越重,而隨著重量增加,竹片中段就更 加內縮,產生更大的空間以供懸掛,重量與空 間便產生有趣的關係。

COATRACK X is integrated with singular element of circles and the assembly in the structure makes it a systematized furniture. All the screwing points are in the same size to advantage production, assembly, and conveniency of changing spare parts. COATRACK X 使用了圓形的單一元素語彙做整 合,處理所有的結構組合方式,將其成為一系 統化的家具。而所有的鎖點皆為同一尺寸,以 利生產與組裝,也加強零件更換的方便性。

The lines of STOOL W has certain similarities to classical furnitures. However,the style in classical furniture emphasizes the elegance of its exquisite details. As in prestressed furniture, the lines exist due to the mechanic considerations in its design. Such interesting phenomenon between the two is created as the result of rationality with logic in contrast with the perception in classical aesthetics. 「STOOL W」造型的形式上與古典家具有些對話性存 在,古典家具精雕細琢,強調細節與之美。而預力結構 傢俱中卻是因為「力學」上的考量而必然出現。產生對 於理性與感性、邏輯與古典形式有趣對話。

Soft deformable materials always bring us a lot of imagination, what changes will appear while adding the element of space into the product? Deformable foam material let materiasl have more interesting conversations with its physical space, foam material can be squeezed and remodeled, then the change of space shows up.

EVA foam material has high density, light weight and high buffer property, is a appropriate materials for human to touch, So take the design thinking into children’s furniture, hoping by the deformation of material to create a new children furniture. 軟性可變形的材料總是能帶給我們很多的想像,而加入空間的元 素進去思考後,又會讓產品出現什麼變化?可形變的發泡材質讓 材料與其形體空間的對話性更加有趣,發泡材質有被擠壓、重塑 型的可能,而此時空間就出現了變化。

EVA發泡材的材料特性使其本身密度高,但重量卻低,具備高緩 衝性,是種適合人體觸摸的材料,於是將設計思考帶入兒童家 具,希望藉由材料的變形,產生與兒童互動的家具。

The river basin is the hotspot of global climate change, to bear the brunt of the disaster. Flood damage caused by tropical cyclones has abecome the focus of the low-latitude countries, river disaster prevention. However, all rescue tools, without any suitable equipment to move in the soaring river domain, equipped with rescue personnel action. Under each other with the existing equipment positioning, short and finally, the RIV-CROSSER excellent high floor area ratio, free inflatable assembly and security and other advantages, to solve the bridge, transportation, the sandbar emergency rescue river basin disaster. 河域,是在全球氣候變遷下,首當其衝的災害熱點。 熱帶氣旋 造成的洪害已成為中低緯度國家,河川防災的重點。 但是目 前沒有任何一個合適的載具可在暴漲河域中完成移動、搭載人 員之救難行動。 在與現有載具互相比較定位、並截長補短之 下,RIV-CROSSER卓越地以高容積率、免充氣組裝和快速安全等 優勢,解決危急時刻的之斷橋運輸、沙洲緊急救難等河域災害。

In the future, we believe that the complex climate caused by the banks of the casualties will be significantly reduced since the advent of the RIV-CROSSER. Grinding coffee beans, why not let it like a fun riding trip?

Combine the riding experience with the grinder and change the modes of operation inherent in appliances, try to create different ways of operation, resulting in different grinding experience. Allow getting more possibilities and interaction when using appliances. To emphasize the “operation” of the human interaction with the product, with the rotation of operation to show two different functions, the left hand gear represents the controling of thickness of coffee bean, the right hand throttle controls the rotational speed of the motor,the rhythms of abrasive are unique with different user , the different operations cause different taste texture of the coffee powder.

Being an object of unconcious, the RIPPLES uses the language of silence in whisper to reveal the existence of itself. Just like ripples, it changes subtly to minimize disturbance the atmosphere of environment. Remind the user with a minimum of volatility, attempt to speak in the lightest words.

People care about health more than past now, so under-counter water filtration has been a big part of modern house health equipment. But water filtrations now are more like a professional equipment that people cannot have a friendly experence when operating or maintaining it then becomes a nightmare to user while it breakdown.

The RIPPLES trys to create a friendly and unique user experence in a diffierent way. 身為不該被察覺到的物件,用一種輕聲、呢喃的方式訴說著靜謐 語言來顯示自身的存在。像是細微的漣漪一般,如此細微的變化 在環境中不怎麼顯眼,使空間與氣氛的紊亂降到最低,以最小的 波動提示使用者,試圖產生最輕的對話。 在人們對於健康愈顯要求的現在,台下淨水器已是現代居家健康 設備重要的一環節。而現有台下淨水器尚流於專業設備,在台下 堆滿雜物的惡劣環境之下,無法在操作、保養等環節提供友善的 體驗,進而導致在需要保養與故障時成為令人頭大的惡夢。 所以RIPPLES試著用不同的方式創造友善且獨特的使用經驗。

Unlike normal water filtrations, the indicators of RIPPLES light up in a poetic way telling user which filter was broken or need to be changed.

The light of filter slowly penetrated the cap and finally projected on the outer body as the ripples of light. 不同於一般淨水器,The RIPPLE的指示燈 在濾心壽命將近或是發生故障時,用簡 單直接而詩意的光告知使用者哪一支濾 心可能該換了。 光線緩緩穿透濾心頂蓋,最後投在外身 並暈開成光的漣漪。

Filters are fully covered, just revealing a translucent part to let the indicator lights go through. The joints of filters are hided to avoid exposing in the moist and cluttered environment, much more hygienic and reliable. 將濾心完整的包覆起來,只露出透光的指示燈,使 得濾心接頭不暴露在雜亂潮溼的環境當中,使用起 來更加安心可靠。

Centralizing the pipeline connections to allow user to setup or maintain easily. To save more space, connections were designed in right angle, and reducing the risk of damage when bending pipelines.

The base is slightly raised to avoid touching the underside of the cabinet directly, more hygienic and clean. 將管線接頭集中,更方便使用者在更換管線時 找到應該連接的孔位。而連接水管線的接頭, 以直角的連接方式讓空間更加節省,管線也不 再彎折增加損壞的風險。 底座被微微地抬高,使視覺上不直接碰觸到櫥 櫃底面,讓RIPPLES更衛生乾淨。
