ARCHITECTURAL LAB SPRING 2012 | 8 +5 WEEKS ARCH 342 | LANCE WALTERS | HAWAII, USA
Located at sixty degrees north latitude, the given site offers a variety of topographical challenges and impressive environmental features throughout the year. The client, Sanford Kwinter, an architectural theorist who has helped pioneer new ideas across the arts and sciences, challenged the exploration of the digital side and process of architectural design. As his ideas bridge philosophical issues to design and architecture, the concept was to bridge theoretical with pragmatic while simultaneously bridging site conditions. Inspired by retreat, entries are designed not only to guide the user but to limit the amount of exposure to the elements. Views of the natural environment are designed as frames while exposing moments within the buildings structure. The building is designed to be experienced inside and out, as circulation or as shelter.
4
Site Plan 0
10’
N 20’ 5
The initial design process started with the traditional 9 square grid exercise. Using point, line, and plane, 9 element/pattern explorations were created followed by 25 compositional explorations to conclude with 9 spatial/3d compositions. The composition was then morphed similar to D’Arcy Thompson’s ideas of morphological transformations through a series of warps. These transformations were then examined to find relations between the morphed shapes to create a generative algorithmic defnition in grasshopper. The mathematical algorithm dictates the specified and absolute behavior of each component allowing multiple variations of the explorations and the ability to discover different site relationships, compositional relationships, and form.

URBAN ESCAPE FALL 2012 | 8 WEEKS ARCH 415 | BYOUNG-SOO CHO | SEOUL, KOREA
The district of Seocheon in Seoul, Korea, is a thriving cultural and artist hot spot rich in cultural history yet under pressure by the recent growth of Korea. As Korea continues to grow and the process of globalization begins to take over, old ways begin to fade away. With this pressure in mind, the idea was to create a program fit for such a unique area with the intention to help revive old ways in the Seocheon. With much of the culture revloving around Taoism, a section of the 8th passage became the driving force in the concept. “In dwelling be close to the land; in meditation go deep in the heart. Recalling the Soswaewon Garden, the tranquility of the mountains, bamboo, and wind, the Urban Escape was designed as a space to challenge typical meditation practices of escaping into nature and single-pointed concentration to provide a new train of thought in the urban setting. A space for the community to remember, forget, and learn.
10
11
The main design intent was focused on a material study of clad metal and tension wire to create a surface scape, such as a partition or barrier. This surface scape would then become the basis of the whole design throughout the entire semester. This study focused on the materials in their simplest form and qualities with the idea that natural forces, the wind or the user, could change the experience of the facade itself.

Connectivity
A large part of the project was focused on mapping the Seocheon district and the specific qualities relative to each project. The chosen site located at the edge of the residential and business district is capable of becoming a node for the area. Along with other student projects located along the main arteries, a multitude of nodes could create a highly integrated path. The site also provides excellent views of the surrounding culture and natural elements. Surrounding traditional houses provide a look into the past and present, the mountain to the north relates to feng shui principles and the view south connects back to the other student projects.

Since the initial process was focused on the design of the surface scape object, the idea was to keep the user focused inward, towards the self, encapsulated by the surface scape object. At each level of program the user can experience something new through the spaces themselves and through the specific weather of that day.

URBAN OCEAN FILTER DEC 2013-JAN 2014 | 1 MONTH EVOLO SKYCRAPER COMPETITION TEAM | HEIDI TAY | JUSTIN ARQUINES | JEREMY FERGUSON
The Evolo Skyscraper Competition is open to architects, students, engineers, designers, and artists globally. Focusing on high rise architecture, the annual competition recognizes outstanding ideas that re-think the relationship between the skyscraper and the natural world, community and city. In regards to site, program and size, there are no restrictions. Maximum freedom to the participants is given to encourage highly creative responses to how we can expand our environments while understanding our historical, contextual, social, urban and environmental responsibilities.
20
21
Primary Route Secondary Route Targeted Pollution Cleanup
Long-Term Radiation Dispersal With close to 44 percent of the worlds population living in coastal areas in an age where resources are diminishing, seas are rising, and population is increasing, the idea was to take urban life to the seas in a completely sustainable and progressive way. The concept, derived from the bacteria called Geobacter sulfurreducens, was to use this bacteria in a holistic sustainable manner from waste cleanup to energy and food production. This in turn would not only help clean our radiated oceans while keeping the mobile floating cities at net-zero, but also provide a multitude of jobs and services that could be taken around the world to help areas in need.
22
Initial Concept Sketch
Geobacter sulfurreducens
Farming Residential
Educational Commercial
Permeable Membrane (Radiation Removal, Energy Production)
Similar to aquaponics, the Urban Ocean Filter focuses on a bottom up approach. The idea is to utilize the Pilus like tentacles containing bacteria to collect waste in the ocean water that will then be broken down to create energy and nitrates which will serve as farming nutrients. The water will then be circled back into the aquaculture and ocean system.

Paying homage to the shipping and logging industries in Portland, a driving material and concept for Aesop’s presence in Portland is maritime canvas and hemp fibre. The material was once used to manufature tents that housed many loggers and fishermen of the area. Staying true to the simplicity of Aesop’s material palette, the walls, shelves, and floor were all covered in canvas, while the hemp fibre was used as a datum to imply a more intimate feel in a tall space.

Work Scope: Schematic Design, Rendering, Design Development, Construction Documents

The natural beauty and historic lumber industy in Portland provided a perfect concept and starting point in the design for Aesop’s signature store. With a strong focus on the timber industry, the product display wall referenced the the teeth of a saw blade. The interior was then clad in locally sourced Douglas Fir, finished using the traditional Japanese technique of ‘Shou-sugi-ban.’
