Introduction My clients is the SWA school band that are trying to promote themselves to the public. The target audiences are 14-25 year olds. They want a promotional material that would attract most kinds of teenagers to listen to their band. I will make a promotional material that would attract teenagers and also to document the band’s personnel and music. Throughout 8 weeks I will be following the design cycle to make a media type to promote my client’s band. To make this promotional material successful, I have to follow the 5 design cycle steps which is Investigation, Design, Plan, Create and Evaluation. Soon I will be interviewing my client for further information.

AOI (Areas of Interactions) The project's AOI is Human Ingenuity. Human Ingenuity is about being creative and inventive. I will be researching what media they are watching and what communication style teenagers like, and based on that I will choose the most effective media types and create materials that are compelling to the them.

Client Interview 1. If you were to see an advertisement promoting a band, what kind of advertisement that would interest you? 1. I'd think videos would do well. 2. Would you be interested in a medium advertisement showing the capabilities of the band or a short advertisement just to show their some of their greatest hits songs? 2. Yes, definitely capabilities of the band. Maybe a bit of both too. 3. Why do you think teenagers love auto-tuned music?
3. Teenagers think that auto tuned music sounds nice and cool 4. What essential information of the band do you want to know? 4. I'd probably want profiles of each member 5. What would a band want to show to their audiences? Why? 5. They'd want to show others that they have talent and that they can perform just as well as others can, hopefully even better.

Client Interview 2 6. What kind of style (of band) would attract teenagers these days? 6. I think on the range of Pop-Rock to Punk to Hardcore 7. What type of teenagers do you want to attract? 7. We want to attract all kinds of teenagers who like to listen to rock. 8. What do people want to think about a band? 8. We want people to think that not all bands are filled with 'bad' people, and that even the best students from the school won't waste their time in studies, but also have other 'hobby' related things that they do with people of their kind. 9. Which do you think teenagers prefer for a cover song: a cover song but similar to the original song or a cover song but the style or theme has been tweaked? 9. A cover song but the style or theme has been tweaked, most definitely. Teenagers love those type songs these days.
10. Which songs would you rather cover, old/classic songs or new songs? 10. Both of them, as long as they're popular and classy, hopefully we won't try to destroy the song.

Client Interview Summary After an interview with my client, she said that the viewers would want critical information about the band, the quality of the band and how the audiences would prefer something that is in a video format. She thought of the teenagers these days loves pop/rock music, also with these type of music it would attract a lot of teenagers. She also wanted the people to think that the band had normal everyday people but with talent, she also wanted to show that even the brightest student (nerds) have some hobby/talent to show to the public. She mentioned that teenagers love cover songs that are tweaked to make it a bit familiar but also shows what type of band they really are, hopefully not destroying the original.

CASE STUDY SUMMARY From the three case studies I researched, I would try for something that catches the eyes of the viewers and also in the same time to make it informative so that people understands the message I’m trying to send. These 3 case studies are each 3 different ways to promote the band, all three have different advantages and it’s own weaknesses. For the movie I wouldn’t have any problems with payment, I can just find videos in YouTube and put it them in the movie application I’m working on or (if the band is easy to contact) I could take videos of them doing rehearsals and probably some interviews. For the posters I’ll probably have to risk ink cartridges at my home, for the most part I have to find pictures of the band online or I could do a photoshoot for the band (if they are close by). For the website I could have just write a bunch of articles about them (biographies, achievements and etc) and also how to catch the public eye’s to the website I’m working on.

MATERIALS
Imovie is included in ILife CD which costs Rp. 300.000 and free for all mac users.
Pages is also included in IWork CD which costs Rp. 300.000 and free for all mac users.
Each websites have all different prices for a full membership. Taking example of Wix it costs the users $100.

Summary of Research I’ve been using applications like Imovie and Pages for years now, so I won’t have a problem with them. I may not be experienced with making a website, but in this project I’m not planning to make a website actually. Apple applications like Imovie and Pages is perfectly fine for this type of projects, it’s simple to use and people will get used with it easily.

Impacts on Environment and Society Impacts on Environment This project involves using computers and computers needs chargers to work. Well during the project it will drain the computer’s battery, by using the chargers provided we can continue our work on the project but in the same time it will also drain the electricity of the current place the users in (home, school and etc). Electricity bills are expensive, it is suggested for people to use their computers well and efficiently.
Impacts on Society This project will also involve a publicity. Well the problem is with publicity is that some things could go wrong and serious, such as copyrights (sometimes if we didn’t cite some information right we could get sued), sending the wrong message to the public (if there are any bad signs coming from any posters, videos and websites) people could go emotional which it might offend some people as well.
Wednesday, November 2, 2011
Design Brief I will design and make a promotional material for a band. This promotional material I’m working on will have to go through the 5 steps of the design cycle which is: Design, Plan, Create and Evaluation. I will do Investigation and Design before doing the actual project (Create), by doing this I will do a lot of research for this project to be successful. After Design I will start the Create stage where I start to make the project. After I have finished all the other stages I will evaluate on my project, I will reflect on my mistakes and see how the results will go.

Material
The materials I will use are the apple applications, I have experience with them and they are easy to use. Also appropriate for this type of project.
To prove it’s use I have done a couple of projects with these apps.
Time
The whole project will take about 8 weeks
Making a timeline would be useful
Size
It will be long enough for the audience to understand the band’s background and their type of music
I will test it on couple of random people and see what would they think
Aesthetics
The movie/website/poster will be interesting enough to catch the audience’s eye
I will test it on couple of random people and see what would they think
Target Audience Wednesday, November 2, 2011
I will focus on teenagers from I’ll try different age groups (other from 14-17) and see what they think the age of 14-17.
Title
Specification
Test
Function
This promotional material function is to introduce to the public my client’s band and also to show their talent too.
Human testing
Purpose
This promotional material will be used to promote the band to be more famous and get more fans
There are two ways: One is human testing and the second one is to look at examples of famous bands these days
Process and Tools
At the making of the project I will use my Mac, since it operates on Macs
Try the apps if it works on the mac
Safety
For safety, I will ask the band members not to do any inappropriate acts or stunts
Read parents reactions on violent death metal bands
Durability
The durability of the promotional material will take a long time last out. I’ll need to do some research on advertisements classic ads and how they can last so long.
To test this I have to watch/see some other bands promotional materials, which might help to avoid certain mistakes
Wednesday, November 2, 2011
Summary of Investigation - My interview with the client helped me to make the promotional material. - Investigating different types of apps helped me to choose which program that would help me to make the promotional material. - The case study helped me to specify what the promotional material is going to look like and how it functions. - Researching the impacts of what the promotional material will do to the environment helped me to think about how I should think about conserving energy by being efficient with electricity. - Specification helps me organize the ideas I come up for this project from all categories like Material, Time, Size, Aesthetics, Target Audience, Function, Purpose, Weight, Process &Tools, Safety and Durability

Summary of Designs Design 1 My target audience are most likely to get interested with video type media. I already have the software needed to work on this video. The time that I have (8 weeks) is enough to finish the video and to edit it.
Design 2 Like design 1 this video might as well attract most teenagers. I also have the software and equipment to do this video. With the time of 8 weeks I could finish and edit it.
Design 3 For design 3 this would attract most of the teenagers at our school (SWA) since most of them know their classmates. Other teenagers outside of the school might also be interested, with this type of posters teenagers would automatically think that these people are professional musicians. The time needed is enough to finish it and to edit it Wednesday, November 2, 2011
Design 4 Design 4’s design is similar like Linkin Park’s band photo. I did this on purpose because parodies tend to bring interest to the advertisement. It might take a while to edit the pictures with the stripe effect, but it’s still enough to work on it.
Design 5
For Design 5 I’ll try to make it simple, since I’m not an expert in making advertisements and that teenagers dislike complicated things. The time to work on it is enough.
Design 6
Just like design 5 I will make the website simple as possible. For this design I need help in making some things possible, for example the big title in the main menu, organizing the links and many others. The time is enough to get help from someone and to finish it.

Partner’s Chosen Design
I think the design one is a good design since what you stated is that the client or the fans are most likely to be interested in a video type media. The video also includes the interview of the band members, interview with the band manager the preview of their songs and there are sine information accompanied with some songs. You can combine the design one with the design 2 intro, since the design 2 has a cooler intro for a band video.

Final Chosen Design + Modification My final chosen design is design 1. Since design 1 seems short I decided to modify design 1 by adding some ideas/scenes from design 2. Design 1’s original plan is good on it’s own but it seems better if some elements of design 2 are added to design 1. The modified version is seen below.

Evaluation of the Plan Is your plan SMART? My plan is SMART. The plan is already specific, easy to achieve, very realistic and also fits the time frame perfectly. I have the materials I needed and it is ready to be made. If the plan fails to follow, I could always improvise easily.
Does the plan seem to be in logical steps? The plan is in logical steps since I have made a detailed gantt chart/step by step and anyone can follow it perfectly. The gantt chart/step by step I made gave the right specifications of the materials I’m going to use and had the right time frame.
Modification to the Design My friend recommended to me that I should mix between design 1 and 2, since both of them are seemingly connected.
Concluding the Evaluation of my step by step plan The evaluation of the plan explains how I am ready to make the real product. It also shows how I will make the product like by following the gantt chart and also explain how the gantt chart can be trusted to be followed.

CREATE
Wednesday, November 2, 2011
Documented Evidence 1 I started working on the movie today and I begin by making the introduction. Making the introduction was quite difficult since I wanted to make the introduction that doesn’t fancy too much about how the documentary won’t disappoint it’s viewers. I made the introduction without complimenting the band and I want the viewers to think like: (watching the introduction) V: Oh this is nice. They don’t really brag a lot (Watches videos of band practicing) V: Oh my God. This is no normal band! | It gives shock to the viewers and it works well. I also added a random Indian song which will help the shock.
Wednesday, November 2, 2011
Documented Evidence 2 Since I haven’t able to record the clip from my client, I decided to make the transitions and wordings that I will use when I got the clips. I inserted wordings like interview names I’m going to the people I’m going to interview and also “behind the scenes” which will later display the band’s activities other than band practice.
Wednesday, November 2, 2011
Documented Evidence 3 I’m working on the questions for the interview I’m going to ask to the band members. The questions are mostly about the band, general information about the band and a little about themselves. There are three band members I’m going to ask which are: Chelsea Lin (Vocal and guitarist), Maria Cynthia (Vocal), Christy Zakarias (Bass) and Ryan Sullivan (Drummer), (possibly more members).
Wednesday, November 2, 2011
Documented Evidence 4 Today I discovered that I don’t have time to make my movie due to the band’s complicated schedule. For this week I’ll move to my 6th design which is to make a blog. This is the only way that I could finish a promotional material within a week. As you see I’m using Wix.com to make my blog, since it’s free and eye catching to viewers. The website is simple and easy to use.
Wednesday, November 2, 2011
Documented Evidence 5 For starters I worked on the summary of the band, like how they met and what made them a huge hit. It contains the brief history and the journey made by the band. I only made 2 paragraphs since I ran out of ideas, I will update them soon enough. Making these made up stories are challenging since people aren’t just going to read something that is cheap.
Wednesday, November 2, 2011
Documented Evidence 6 I am working on the “blogs” section, it will update on my client’s activities. Now it only contains 2 entries about his activities and it will be updated every 3 days. It’s quite challenging to make a “believable” blog post, that I need to check real band pages for examples.
Wednesday, November 2, 2011
Documented Evidence 7 I am working on making the album cover of the band’s albums for the past 10 years. This will be seen in the Media section of the blog. Working on the album cover is quite challenging since Alternate rock tend to make album covers that are both unique and simple. I used pixelmator to make the album covers, since it’s like photoshop only more simpler.
Wednesday, November 2, 2011
Documented Evidence 8 I am currently organizing the links and the pages of the website. I managed to keep the website simple and easy to navigate for the viewers to view the website. It doesn’t have much content but the viewers might as well enjoy the beautiful album covers and what’s posted on the blog section.

(Toilet sign) These are the pictures I used for the album covers of the ‘Boxheads’. I made up the story about Eva painted with the ‘Promises Broken’ painting made by Kris Lewis (first link). Also I used the toilet sign in the second link to make up the toilet sign as an ‘awkward’ position between two people.
Wednesday, November 2, 2011
Documented Evidence 10 The link to my client's website is: www.wix.com/manusiatempe/boxheads. I do apologize if the final product isn't good enough to satisfy the assessment, there has been a lot of unexpected schedules that I had to face and I had to improvise.

EVALUATION

Evaluation on each stage of the Design Cycle Investigation
During the investigation stage, I followed the requirements of what the teacher gave me like to research for the materials, interview the client, how it will affect the environment and etc. I thought of all the things that would satisfy my client with a lot of realistic thinking and planning. I made it detailed as possible since I finished early, in which I have time to make it look great.
Design
During the design stage, I think I worked quite well on this part. All I wrote down was just what are the good and bad parts of each designs I came up with. Also I had to interview my friend of which design he recommends making. Well at the end the designs were quite useful during the create stage when it provided me a back up plan, after realizing that I don’t have much time to do the video.
Plan In the planning stage I had to make steps leading to a successful product. I wrote down the equipments I needed and wrote down how it will help me during the create stage. I had to be detailed as possible since I will depend on the steps to achieve success in the create stage.
Create
This is the most important step out of all the design cycle, since this is the only stage that involves us making the product. From my perspective I failed on this stage, horribly. What happened was that I didn’t fulfill my original plan because of the unexpected schedule and I was forced to improvise. There was unexpected things that occurred like how I couldn’t record the whole band playing because of social service meetings. Usually with those meetings I am unable to record the whole band playing, even one song. So I decided to make a website which is easy to make and fast. The problem with the website was that there was a lot of things that I didn’t know (like the customization settings) and also I was running out of ideas because of other school projects too.
Wednesday, November 2, 2011
Design cycle evaluation pt. 2 & Meeting Specifications Evaluation
The evaluation stage is where I can express on how I felt about the accomplishments I have done on the earlier stages. Well in the evaluation stage I was being honest on how I felt, mostly because (maybe) the teacher can give all the students extra time in the next project. But if that didn’t happen, I might use the evaluation on the stages to improve on myself for future IT projects.
Title
Testing
Material
To prove it’s use I have done a couple of projects with these apps.
Time
Making a timeline would be useful
Size
I will test it on couple of random people and see what would they think
Wednesday, November 2, 2011
Success or not?
Why?
√
It is a success since I was able to use the apple application there is to make the final product.
X
It’s not a success since I wasn’t able to follow the timeline well and ending up abandoning it. I also was overlapped by the time and screwed up in the time organizing.
√
It is a success because I tried it on some other people and they complimented the product by saying that the product was “simple and easy to navigate”
Meeting Specifications pt. 2 Title
Testing
Aesthetics
I will test it on couple of random people and see what would they think
Target Audience
I’ll try different age groups (other from 14-17) and see what they think
Function
Human testing
Purpose
There are two ways: One is human testing and the second one is to look at examples of famous bands these days
Wednesday, November 2, 2011
Success or not?
Why?
Sort of
It’s a sort of because most of the people that saw the website thought about adding more features and updates in the website. They liked the idea of the website being simple, they would recommend to put more things in it.
Sort of
It’s a sort of because not all 14-17 year olds will be interested, it will mostly depend on their taste of music. It could actually interest adults up to 20-30. I mean we’re trying to get a bigger audience right?
X
Not success because even though the website shows the band’s history but it wouldn’t show the band’s products (since the band is fake and I can’t just post some other band’s work, which will be awkward).
√
Success because it will let the people know that there is a band called “Boxheads”. It will raise more audience by updating more things to the website and more content.
Meeting Specifications pt. 3 Title
Testing
Process and Tools (Software)
Try the apps if it works on the mac
Safety
Read parents reactions on violent death metal bands
Durability
To test this I have to watch/ see some other bands promotional materials, which might help to avoid certain mistakes
Wednesday, November 2, 2011
Success or not?
Why?
√
Success since all of the applications works well with the mac, perfectly.
√
Success since the band is perfectly harmless, rarely do violent stunts and have no criminal record.
√
Success because when I read a band website (linkinpark official page), I found out that I have to add more content like updates on the band and upload more daily media (pictures and videos). In which I will do in the future
Evaluation Successful Points The successful points I made in this project is that I was able to finish the project according to the teacher’s deadline and was able to learn a lot about time management.
Least Successful Points The least successful points I made in this project is that I wasn’t able to make the final product like I imagined during the planning stage and wasn’t able to add more creative content to website I was working on.
Problems During the project I wasn’t aware of the band’s schedule and also the due date of the project, which is a silly mistake. I should have known them all to manage my time more efficiently. Also I have some other project that I had to worry about and usually during these times I don’t work that well. I could have used a real band for the project, maybe I rushed on things too much, that I couldn’t think of another great idea.
Wednesday, November 2, 2011
Evaluation pt. 2 Modifications/Improvements I could do some modifications on the website like by adding more content like adding more widgets, update the weekly blog and add more things to the media section.
Client Feedback
The clients are pleased by the website by how it raises their popularity and they also mentioned that there is ‘A room for improvement’, I will be their blogger the one who updates and make changes on the website daily.
The impact on the Society and Environment SOCIETY- My product would have an impact on society by how people can/will encounter the website at any time. People will either read it or probably just skipped it. If they read it, they will know a little bit about the band’s history and what type of work they do.
ENVIRONMENT- During the making of the product I used electricity to power this laptop, when it runs out of battery. The electricity I used most of the time are the ones in my home. Electricity is provided by a electricity supplier, that will provide me and my family electricity for our daily use. If we use them, we pay for it.
